Slick, tight, funky, melodic and well-arranged/produced. Sheena sings to the song, and keeps her formidable vocal firepower restrained. It works in this high-tech (for the time) new-jack setting. The focus is on the melody and tune; she brings it with a ton of smoldering heat.
Sheena Easton she was very beautiful woman and she had pretty voice...one of the best woman singers fom the magical 80s but the 90s.... fade away...so sad.

So, it flopped. None of the songs on any of the albums she did after Lover in Me had Top 40 potential, and she had to have known this. Her Top 40 career would definitely have gone on longer if she had hooked up with her former producers. But, a couple other things were happening at around this time as she has often said in interviews: She was in yet another failing marriage, and she was in the process of adopting children... I think she really didn't care all that much about being a Top 40 performer anymore.
@@FallacyAsPraxis All of that is true and she has also went on record as saying adopting those kids kept her sane. I feel sorry for her though that she never did find a husband who could treat her like a princess or a queen.
Sheena Easton went from 'Morning Train' to 'What Comes Naturally', 'Strut', and 'Lover in Me' putting to shame any and all followers in terms of smokin' hot sexy! At the time it was considered 'racy', now it's considered smoldering sexual confidence with a touch of tease. One of the hottest female singers of our generation (sorry, Janet still takes the top spot), but I listen to Sheena almost daily on my commute.
Yes agreed, Sheena Easton can sing her Scottish ass off, and she was beautiful. With that beautiful soprano voice. Her soprano kinda reminds me of the late great Teena Marie.
She's just gorgeous in this video. Too bad her looks and appearance peaked after her popularity in the music business. She got sexier as she got older.
Loooove Sheena! I've been a fan since my early childhood... I was like 6 or 7 when I started listening to her! I remember singing to "Try A Little Tenderness" and "You Could've Been With Me" and I was in heaven! Love you, Sheena baby! Always , Nick
Back in late 80s and early 90's it was al about bright cross colors. I remember liking this song after, The lover in me. I dont think it was as big a hit tho. I do remember seeing her perform it live on tv.
I have always imagined two Sheenas, one sweet and candid from the 80s with short hair and another sensual and daring one with different makeup and songs as well as more elaborate haircuts in the 90s.
@Isaiah King It is exactly. It was derivative even before she did it. Yet when the likes of En Vogue (and far worse) tackle it, they get plaudits. Least it sings it perfectly as she ever, which saves it. I think her sellout 1988 album is maybe the fault here, but also the way audiences and so-called tastes changed for the not-so-good 90s. 80s music had long gone, and her much better stuff continued to glow forever in that decade, and great to always revisit as its classic. Nonetheless is likely her best song out of the lot from 1991.
It’s funny when people ask that because we have ourselves to blame. New generations of listeners are what drive certain music away. Music like trends start and when they hit huge and everyone jumps in on it they reach the peak and some people grow tired of it while others try new sounds and styles and when that becomes the next best thing, people drop the other or it no longer has the momentum to keep on when newer stuff fades out the former. Therefor it’s us who don’t keep it alive and move onto the next est or new thing. Then after a long time, when we hear that old style, it transports is to a good time and memory and we miss it
