"It's a dream come true, just not my dream come true." I hope this is a attitude people can develop going forward. Smash Ultimate I think is brilliant with it's stance on "Everyone is here!" and the fact that it's such an open ended topic in of itself. Everyone is indeed here and we've seen some unique characters since DLC pack 1. I personally didn't expect Joker or Hero, and my brain is still stuck on "jdhnfgjkdfng TERRY IS IN SMASH!" I wasn't the most hyped for Min Min having never played Arms, but I still was willing to try and give her a shot. I'm thinking Steve is going to be one of those character that'll bring just a lot of chaos and randomness to a battle, and honestly I like that idea.
Chaos and randomness isn't good in a fighting game. You need consistency in competitive fighting games or skill becomes irrelevant.

Monsieur Hadou to be fair, there’s been “chaos and randomness” in Smash ever since Melee (Luigi’s Misfire, Peach’s DownB, and G&W’s Hammer). The only thing that looks random with Steve so far is the items he can dig up and use for crafting, which isn’t all that crazy relatively speaking (especially with Hero in the game)
Monsieur Hadou smash wasn’t originally made to be a competitive fighting game. I think we should all be open minded. After all Smash is a celebration of videogames and Minecraft is the best selling video game of all time. It would be blasphemy for them to not include the best selling videogame of all time in smash. Minecraft is a fun game that really anyone can enjoy. I’m sure most of the people in this comment section have played Minecraft before and If you haven’t then your missing out on an experience that you can’t get from any other game. I’m ready to welcome Steve into smash with open Arms because he deserves to be here.
This, this is fact. I could understand the hype for Terry because I've seen many people play KoF whenever I go to Mexico. I never grew up with the game or characters, but I still thought he was a great entry to the series (fun as hell to play as too). Sans and Steve were what made me freak out (despite Sans being a mii gunner costume) because I had strong attachments to them from memes and personal experiences from the games. It's okay to be dissatisfied (like Min Min for me), but hating on a character and the people hype for said character is sad to see.

Bro, I’m pissed at how he comments this negatively and yet became a screaming child when Sephiroth came out. He thinks of this as a disappointment and became dreaded, and now he calls this the “best game ever” when Sephiroth appeared? This is stupidly biased. I was happy to see both Steve AND Sephiroth coming in, I saw others’ reactions and It was a fun sight to it, but when I saw how Max is over exaggerated excitement about this, it just disgusts me. It even pissed me more when he calls Sakurai a “fanboy.” Like dude, everyone loves every characters and well known characters will be included in Smash one way or another. Either social jokes, or popular demands, yet here he is, one sided and thinks the Nintendo shouldn’t do such a “stupid” decision. Fuck that guy dude.....

So crazy, but I'll admit the reveal video made me laugh genuine laughter. He looks so goofy but in a genuinely good way! Him eating that porkchop in front of a stunned Mario is the best. That's exactly the energy this character should have. I approve.

Well no, not exactly. The rules have held firm so far: character must originate from a game franchise and must have appeared on a Nintendo console at some point. But stuff like Project X Zone on 3DS means Nintendo can choose from basically any Japanese franchise they want, aside from the obvious like Sony's garbage cinegames but who even wants those?

@@WhopsInc. I think Sakurai is pretty aware of how fans would feel about the reveal. He also figured it'd be annoying to program and require a lot of adjustments to everything in the game. But if he thinks he can make something fit he'll give it a shot, that and if he feels it's justified in his eyes in being included.

I had issues with Steve since 2011 since I don’t know how Nintendo was going to make his moveset.
I despise Minecraft since I ran that train dry when I was 10, but I’m pumped to see another one of the long-requested people get in.

I felt slightly disappointed because I at least expected to know all the characters that were picked, but I was more disappointed in myself...

As much as this character isn’t for me or most people of my generation (like Max), it makes all the sense in the world.
Without hyperbole, Minecraft is literally the Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros. or Pokemon of its generation. It’s in a very exclusive club of titans in the industry, and if Smash is now supposed to be a ”celebration of video games”, it’d be weird to NOT have Minecraft represented.
And yeah, I get that it might not feel like it belongs to most of us in the ”over 30” crowd (it’s my gut reaction, too), but it really is the best representation of the last decade of gaming. Plus, it’ll hopefully result in a super creative and unique character, which is always great.

I was born in 2001, and pretty much, yeah. everyone at the time in school talked about minecraft, we would go back to our house and play some servers together. this fighter really gets me, it hits me with nostalgia, and some well deserved hype. good pick on sakurais hand.

@@eriksulin627 He said right at the beginning that he doesn't get to pick just his favorites or random characters out of hat which implies Steve isn't in the game because he wanted Minecraft in. Nintendo asked him and they planned it to release right before an official Minecraft livestream.
Sakurai has praised Minecraft in the past as has Miyamoto. Sakurai is being tongue in cheek as usual when talking about Nintendo wanting him because he knew it would be a programming challenging. As much as Max hates it, Minecraft is more popular than Dante or any other capcom character for that matter

Mine was kind of the same, except I was pretty neutral about it.
I can understand a lot of the disappointment online, and I so appreciate how civil Max is. Just because it’s an add he doesn’t want or cares about doesn’t mean it’s automatically a bad character or it was a mistake or Sakurai is a fool.

Just mentioning this now because already this is going both ways: Many online are throwing shade at the Minecrafters for ruining Smash, while just as many Minecrafters are throwing shade at the haters for hating.
Like or dislike a character however you want, just don’t be an asshat to others, that’s all. Which is why I like how Max is being civil.

I read that comment as more attached to his initial discussion/brainstorming sequence when approached with the idea of the character. The blocks and moves and the minecart in the trailer all look pretty compatible with how things exist as they are. It'll be interesting to see what happens with the blocks on slopes, but that's about the only odd thing that occurs to me atm. As far as balance, we get a major balance patch every character release anyway, so that's nbd.

I'm glad that max is self aware enough to realize that his disappointment comes from personal taste. He could have taken the twitter approach and gone on about how Minecraft is for babies and no one cares about it. However, he forced his salt down and admitted that Minecraft in smash is a big deal for many, just not him.
What a lot of people don't realize don't realize is that Minecraft is to adolescent girl gamers what Mario and Zelda was to boy gamers of previous generations. If you want to get girls involved in this game, then they made the right choice. If you just want 30 y/o middle age men playing it, then sure - pick someone else.

I'm 38. I definitely appreciate steve being in the game. Huge character in the gaming industry. I also think having characters that aren't straight out of another fighting game is great. Shows the creativity of the team to come up with a move set.

Just saying: There's nothing wrong with Steve being a mascot for children. Some characters in Smash were also the exact same thing in their generation. If you wait another decade or two, Steve would be put in the same pedestal as them. Whether you agree or not, just remember the impact this game brought to all generations of gamers.
Shit I’m just now getting into Minecraft this year and I’m 28. I love Minecraft and as soon as I heard the zombie gurgle I knew what character this was going to be and I was cheesing like a fucking child. Btw I was watching a compilation of reveal trailers last night and that’s how I found out Minecraft Steve was in smash because I haven’t played ultimate since before he was released. Everything else in the trailer like the enderman was just sprinkles on the cake

I can totally undertsand Max's (and a lot of people's) feelings on the character, I feel the theme didn't really fit in a fighter, but here is Sakurai making it work, and making it look fantastic. The accuracy of the visuals, the animations and everything, it's so well done, they could have given the character more flexibility and have him move fast but I am glad they kept it as is, truly hard work!

The way Sakurai talked about how implementing Minecraft Steve in Smash would be such an arduous task, the massive reworking of stages, and the fact he said it would be impossible made me think that Mincraft Steve was chosen _because_ he would be so hard to put in. Instead of bringing in a character that would mesh well with the game as a whole, they choose a character that would be hard to do. I admire him for that.
And some people still boo him because they didn't get someone else.
