I'm sucking wind on making 3D "prints" I tried with FreeCad and started Sketchup yesterday. my problem seems to be GCODE translation. I import STL to Slic3r or Netfabb, and I don't what I'm doing past import. So, once I import, and it shows me an item which is a trainwreck of the original, I don't know what to do. Please advise on a solid, open source Gcode translator for 3d printing, and how to use it.
+TheRangeControl you probably figured this out by now but for stl files that are not solid you can use a model repair service like netfabb.azurewebsites.net/ to fix some of the issues
Hi Barton; I'm new at this CNC machines. I've read and watched you-tube enough to build my own small CNC. I have all my electronics but I just can't seem to get it through my head as to what the electronic path is between my C/P using Sketchup to the steppers. Will you help me? 1. Select a drawing or create one on Sketchup then I need something to get the information to my Arduino. I know many use Mach3. Do you have another (whatever it is called - controller?) preference for this part of the CNC? Do Mach3 and Clipeppr perform the same tasks? Thanks, Tom
Chris Kindig Mach3 reads G code which is essentially a text file containing toolpath data, it doesn't read graphics files. The video doesn't show him exporting G code or using Mach 3. I export to the option "Mach2/3 Arcs (mm) (*.txt)" and it works fine. There is a video out there showing the process as that's where I learnt from.
dmak2 Right, all your machine understands is G-code (literally an array of commands to send to your machine) All you need is something that "generates" G-code
Hi, easy to use, I' have downgrade my sketchup at the 8 versión ,for the extención dxf. And works fine. I' realy.realy happy. Tanks.sorry my bad english. Saludos desde tierra azteca.
Miki Stojisic Youre welcome :) ,watch also : facebook.com/pages/Gerbencnc/652572264838066?fref=ts or gerbencnc.nl (stil working on it) , but maybe for the future. all made with vectric programs
ok, theres more than one way to skin a fish but dude you went backwards to go forwards. you made a 3D object, made it 2D just to get your Gcode? the simplest way to do what you did is Illustrator, cut2D and then whatever program you use to operate your CNC machine. nothing to learn here.
I just found "Phlat" plugin, a simple Gcode generator for CNC cutting. It has a 3D Gcode plugin that looks promising. I only am running simulations in Mach3 as I have not received the bits for my new cheap-o-chinese 30x40 4 axis CNC router. I think I will have to invest in Deskproto so to be able to use the rotary axis. I was able to instal Aspire and I see why you are not using it for design, it is very complicated. Thanks anyway.
how do I go from aspire to gcode?
I can never get letters converted to a G code for my CNC machine. Only hand drawn.
Very helpful for a beginner, thanks!

I installed the DXF and STL plugin, but I dont have the option when exporting to save as DXF. Do you have any idea what my issue could be?
how do you go from what you did here to mach3?

Wow! Aspire is nice but costs an arm an a leg :P
Hi, here find the program full. Read the instrucción to install. Enjoy www.mediafire.com/folder/29ha0n5str009/Aspire
