I would definitely open it up. I've seen some photos of bad heat-sink placements that slipped after gluing on at the factory. You may have dust or dirt, an end of a copper wire fell inside after some wire work, etc., that got dislodged when it was moved, etc. Also when testing? Try each "bank" of ports (as you eventually did with the phones) as they often have their own controller(s) you may find that one bank is dead while the other 3 (in this device) may work fine.

Possible that either the reset did the trick, or the PoE circuit resets internally ONLY after all capacitors are totally drained - which can take a few hours - after unplugging it. I would not use it in a critical production environment anymore because of its history AND age

Open her up! I have two Unifi 24port switchs one POE and one without. Experiencing the exact same thing you did - no POE random light on port - very strange - love to get either of these switches working again - if not production at least a lap or something. On the Non POE one, half of the ports just stopped working then all of em. Very sad for this equipment.

No I would not trust it as a production switch. I've had Edgeswitch POE 24 port die. No heavy use, just a bunch of UBNT cameras connected. I've had 2 ERL go dead (one was the power supply and one was the USB key). Also had a cisco SG 48port POE die with 46 APs connected. That one died due to a dead short. Renovation guys decided a couple of network cables in the apartment units needed to be removed and snipped it. Switch went bye bye. I wouldn't put that switch back in customer's production unless you can test it a few months in your own environment. If it passes, then I would put it on a shelf at the customer's location with a big ptouch label with a warning that this switch had already failed once. So now, if their existing production switch goes down, they can quickly put this one in as a spare but still order a replacement switch. It's like having a spare tire in the care. It will help you through the immediate issue but wouldn't want to run for ever. The cost of network downtime is not worth saving a few bucks. I remember your customer is an engineering firm so, having a dozen engineers not being able to work even for 2 or 3 hours can quickly cost a lot of money. Just went through a similar situation with a brand new Aruba switch. 24 port POE with 10G uplinks. Every now and then the switch would reboot. Luckily that part of the office only has 2 people working it in right now. We are still in mandatory work from home instructions from the government. When the switch goes down, so does the phones :( Laptops just switch over to WiFi. Put in a spare that we had and things seem ok now. Doing an RMA on the defect unit. Has less than a month of use on it. These things happen on any brand. As you put more equipment you start noticing more failures but still over the maybe 200s switches (business line switches) I've sold, very few have died over the last 20 years. I'd say maybe a dozen or so have failed.

Whatever was plugged into Port #45 is probably what causes the switch to shutdown. By having a solid orange light on POE status with nothing plugged into the port is a error. By factory resetting the device cleared the error on port #45.

    A visual inspection can't hurt.

You could contact the manufacturer and ask about your theory of a short on the POE taking down the router, also check the manual to see if it has a hardware test routine built in.

@Milan Lucky I read through a few google searches on the subject and it appears the ports can be configured in three different power states. Im wondering if logging into the router as it was and resetting the ports to powered would have resolved the issue ( as did the reset) as the "fault" may have caused all ports to go into power off state.

I have a 24 port I wish I could fix. Its an edegeswitch 24 250w. No blue light but random ports have orange or green lights and others have zero. Attempted a reset and its a no go. Ive never fixed internal components so Im not able to do that.

if there is a section that gives you power use per port see if there's any outliers does it logically sound right?(older devices maybe less efficient but still sound right under context; check a day or x amount of time after powering stuff on) if using cameras try triggering night vision if an option(not completely important but never know).... if all sounds good it wouldn't hurt to take a look inside?

@@UnkyjoesPlayhouse congrats on getting it up and running, but it almost seems too easy! 🙂If it passes your testing, I would trust it. But trust it or not, always have ready backup hardware if downtime is very disruptive to your client. as you know, it's important to have cold standby hardware for access level stuff as you can't really implement redundancy at that level.

    In a test lab....sure. In a Prod environment....are you crazy ?
