The name - Institute for Nuclear Research or shortly ATOMKI according to the Hungarian Atommagkutató Intézet - suggests that only a certain field of physics is dealt with here. However, the interdisciplinary approach of science has always been strong since the establishment in 1954.
Most of the phenomena studied and the techniques applied here utilise the behavioural difference of either stable or radioactive isotopes of chemical elements. Our research infrastructure is unique in Hungary, having the most particle accelerators that are available not only for our one hundred researchers but for the national and international collaborators as well.
Both basic and applied research is important. We develop new detectors and methods to discover the nature around us, to make our life better and our effect on environment sustainable. The experimental scientists are supported by theoreticians and vice versa. The world of science opens up for our researchers due to the wide range of collaborating partners and institutions around the globe.
We are involved in these fields of research: nuclear physics, atomic physics, particle physics, vacuum physics and cryo-techniques, surface physics and materials sciences, quantum physics, radiochemistry, medical imaging, water research, environmental research, heritage science, space research.
This means that beyond physicists also chemists, biologists, geologists, mathematicians, informaticians and even electrical engineers are welcome to learn how research and development works and to add new ideas to future results.
ATOMKI now belongs to Eötvös Loránd Research Network (ELKH - Eötvös Loránd Kutatási Hálózat), formerly belonged to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA - Magyar Tudományos Akadémia) and has always been independent of universities.
