An Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) Ion Source (ECRIS) is usually the first element of a bigger accelerator chain. The best example is the Large Hadron Collider in CERN, where an ECR ion source delivers ion beam for further acceleration. However, the ATOMKI-ECRIS is stand-alone, without any post-acceleration and can be considered as an ion source and a low-energy accelerator. It offers exceptional opportunities for domestic and foreign researchers to perform experiments in plasma physics, in atomic physics and for applications.
In this video, the general layout of the laboratory is shown, i.e. the ECRIS itself with its two beamlines available at the moment. In the middle of the movie, we show a short computer simulation on the generation of the hot plasma cloud in the plasma chamber. From this plasma, various ions can be extracted and transported to the desired target.
