Back in the 1950’s Lloyd “Penny” Pennington was doing what he loved, flying over the Alaska back country and checking out potential hunting areas. His favorite was to watch brown bears as they prepared to den up, as their behavior at that season was a tell as to where they would den for the winter. The bears would tend to lay near their desired denning spot for several days seemingly waiting for the season to finally turn past the point where they would need to give into hibernation. As he scanned the scrub below, he found exactly what he was looking for on the hillside above SnowShoe Lake.
The season did finally change long after Penny had returned home and began waiting out the long, cold winter at his lodge, a dozen or so miles east of Gunsight Mountain Lodge. It was located a few hours up the Glenn Highway and offered easy access to the back country and pursuit of his passions, hunting and fishing. As the dark twilight of winter faded and the weeks wore on, springtime began to signal it’s arrival. In the lower elevations the snow began to melt and leaves started to bud. This was Lloyds sign that the bears hibernating in higher elevations would be leaving their dens soon.
Lloyd contacted his close friend, Everett Kendall, his longtime barber and friend who had expressed a desire to bag a giant bruin before hanging up his hunting rifle for good. The two men lifted off in Lloyd’s bush plane and were soon among the clouds and headed toward the hibernating behemoth.
The mountains and trees passed by as if it were a giant piece of art. The lush spring greenery is broken by white patches of snow and ice. Deep blue lakes as pure as any water in the world sparkled below as the bush plane started to descend toward their planned destination.
As the plane skidded to a stop on the patch of ice, the hunters began to focus on the task at hand. Lloyd immediately disconnected his seat belt and began digging through his gear to locate his rifle and binoculars. The two men disembarked the plan and briefly discussed their plan to bring the beautiful, powerful bruin home.
As they hiked up the ice patched trail they kept a watchful on the hill side above them for any wildlife, both for the sights they may see but also to avoid any dangerous confrontations. The trail climbed a few hundred feet and the men started to feel their age and lack of physical fitness. They pause to glass the muskeg below them for any signs of life.
After a few hours of slow progress they arrived at the line of trees that marked where the bear was still denned up. Lloyd cautiously made his way to within a few yards of the opening of the den and noticed that the bear had already opened the snow at the entrance. This was a sign that Lloyd was all too familiar with, and he immediately understood that the bear would be emerging within just a few hours, and be extremely hungry.
The two men, weary from their hike, decide to go about a hundred yards down the hill and enjoy a cigarette. As they make their way down the hill they discuss the point from which they will plan to shoot the bear and the best way to recover the carcass. Lloyd finds a small tree that was blown over and the two men settle in for a smoke and small talk. They lit up their smokes and shared short stories about their life experiences and put their cigarettes out to get ready to get in place.
As Kendall is starting to stand he hears a loud roar and looks up to see the largest bear leaping toward him faster than he could process the predicament he and his friend were in. The saliva frothed from the deadly predator's mouth and its 5 inch claws seemed to grow in size upon sight. The elderly hunter tried to turn and run but only got about 3 steps into his retreat when the enormous force of the impact of the bear's attack drove him face first into a hard frozen snow bank. His rifle tumbled uselessly through the air and clattered onto the gravel bar several feet from the hapless hunter, now prey. The bear's giant canine teeth tore through the back of his skull and extinguished the light of his life in an instant.
At that moment, Lloyd had just watched his long time friend be killed before he could even click his safety off. The athletic and hungry bear turned from Kendall and glared at Lloyd for a split second before he turned and charged toward Lloyd.
Lloyd fired once, twice, three times striking the bear in the foot but not hitting anything vital and unable to slow the muder minded predator.

The bear had the greater advantage. The hunters had an airplane, guns and numbers, the bear had superior smell, strength, speed, hearing, endurance, and familiarity of the area. Bears are also very intelligent and can use indirect tactics to catch their prey. Their hides are thick and bones, dense. Several gunshots may not bring one down. If anything, these guys were underdogs.

Let me get this straight: they went to shoot a bear, found it coming out of hibernation, then stayed near its den and lit cigarettes? Of course the bear smelled them and their smoke. Guess they weren't thinking clearly. And how about the dude who got off three shots at close range and hit only the bear's foot? He had no business being anywhere around there.

    • @unquietriot8019
      @unquietriot8019 2 года назад +46

also, characterizing the bear as "hateful" is part of the problem. When we anthropomorphize animals, we tend to forget they DON'T process thought and emotion the way humans do. They live to eat and breed. Period. The animal didn't "hate" anyone. It was going about the business of being a bear. Find something to eat, then find more things to eat and eventually make some baby bears. When we get used to thinking - even subconsciously - that ANY animals are motivated in the same ways that we are, we set ourselves up for potential problems - whether that animal is a bear or a strange dog. Always proceed with caution.

the only land apex predator in the whole world that eats all of their prey alive.
when all other apex predators hunt, they kill their prey and then eat it. There are rare occassions when animals like lions and tigers hunt prey far larger than themselves, it is impossible for them to kill the prey so they have to do what they do.
but bears are horrible, they will attack a human and start eating them alive.
they will attack a dog and start eating them alive.
they will attack a deer and start eating them alive.
      etc.

Basically, once a man eater always a man eater.
The main reason that top praetors don't hunt people is that they fear people. And that is because any that don't fear people get killed by people.
But in this situation it doesn't feel right. like someone else said it was more a bear self-defenses than a bear attack

    • @marcusstormm7591
      @marcusstormm7591 2 года назад +4

@@SilverMe2004 that is an older school of thought. The jury is still out on that topic. Only twice in modern human history has that been true. The man eaters of Tsavo and more recently with Gustav the African crocodile on the Zambezi river. The lions were killed and Gustav hasn’t eaten a man or been seen in years.
Bears do want to have anything to do with people & will avoid us as much as possible. The only time bears begin to kill people for food is if they are old, lame or are starving to death. There are no studies that prove a bear will continue to hunt people once it tastes human flesh except in the rare cases I mentioned.
If we think about it, momma bears aren’t killed for attacking out of self defense, they’ve tasted humans.
Polar bears will actively hunt humans but prefer…anything else over us. Tigers also actively hunt humans same story though. They prefer other animals. Fun trivia; a tiger will never attack what it thinks can see it so the workers in India will wear masks on the back of their heads to prevent an attack.
You’re 100% right though this was a bear acting in self defense.

    • @SilverMe2004
      @SilverMe2004 2 года назад

@@marcusstormm7591 crocodile will eat anything. But as ambush predators they don't actively hunt anything. That still doesn't stop humans from 'removing' man eaters. The same goes for sharks.
There are about 2 predation attacks by bears in the US each year. Most of them are by grown male black bears. But I suspect that the number of bears killed by humans each year is higher. And there are cases of sow with cubs being ' destroyed ' because they had eaten someone.
In most cases where an animal is a known man eater they are not given a second chance to reoffend. So it's a bit hard to prove one-way or the other.
However probably the best example of known man eaters not being ' dealt with' is in India where wearing a mask on the back of your head lessens the chance of being attacked by a tiger while illegally working in the tiger reserves. I'm not saying that we should kill man-eaters. But you'll find it hard to get volunteers to test the theory

So they were smoking a hundred yards away from the den, well that was like saying "We're here bear " cause the bear would have smelt the smoke, and the scent of a human. So I take it it the bear had come out of the den, or was it another bear? As experienced hunters they should have known better. Still sad though.

I'm not one of these crazy animal people, even though I'm in awe of and respect all animals. Is it me or, does anyone else not feel bad for a bear hunter, when he gets attacked? I feel bad for his/ her family but not the hunter. He literally is seeking out the bear to KILL it and stop it from existing.. It's 100 percent different then when an innocent person gets mauled by a trouble some bear. the hunter signed up to play the game and lost, with a powerful weapon non the less. Its not the 1800s anymore where you need that hide for a blanket. It's strictly for a trophy and the experience of taking a life. Sorry not sorry.

Lot of people that still hunt do so to eat or for livelihood (selling meat/pelts), and hunting is far more humane than going and buying meat at a grocery store.
Instead, I have no sympathy for people that feed wild animals and endanger the community and the wild animal's life in a stupid selfish way or who sit on their fat butts all day burning carbon fossil fuels, overbuying material items for their self serving needs, and dumping out kids in an overpopulated world thus endangering wildlife habitat with human encroachment and deforestation. These were trophy hunters who probably weren't even going to eat the meat from the bear they killed because bear meat is typically not good-eating and carries lots of parasites. @@PatrickPierceBateman Did it say these were trophy hunters? Perhaps I didn't catch it but if not how do you know? Regardless, bear meat is good and depends on what the bear's recent diet was (bears eating mostly fish is not the best) but it's often cooked and eaten and used in stews, etc. Have you ever eaten it? I have and it's quite tasty.
As for your comment about parasites, that's true, I would avoid medium rare bear steak as it needs to be properly cooked but it's very good in things like stew or roasts that go a little longer (unlike cattle/beef roast). It's a fairly uncommon meat, because unlike cow, deer, bison, boar, etc. bears are not domesticated for their meat (likely due to the high danger/risk of keeping such an animal). If they could be domesticated like the aforementioned animals, you'd cook it rare non-stop and willing to bet quite a few people would enjoy it. That said, even cooking it longer to avoid getting sick, it's still quite good. Not everyone is in it for the trophy...

I just subscribed half hour ago so this is only my third video but I got to admit that the stories are so compelling that it's hard to stop watching them. About 20 years ago my friends mother took a pic of a black bear outer kitchen window. This bear was literally in downtown Norwich Connecticut. There were woods were the back of this house was but the house was basically right in the city. I've never run into a black bear here in New England at all but they're here. I was heading to work one night for overtime at 2:30 a.m. and I came upon a massive female mountain lion walking down the breakdown lane. It wasn't a soul around so I pulled up behind it and it stopped turned around and gave one loud ass snarly growl. I couldn't believe how big it was. From nose to the tip of its tail had to be between 5 and 6 ft..I love how these Town select men decide what is and isn't in these towns they're elected to. For one thing animals don't really give two s**** about borders and secondly how in the hell would one know when you're talking millions of acres of forested land? They're spotted often than nothing Connecticut and so isn't Sasquatch. I don't think people understand how much woods are out there. It's a joke to hear someone say that they have nowhere to hide.when I'm in the woods I try to Make some noise. The last thing you want to do is surprise anything. The stories are horrifying but one can learn quite a bit from this channel.

I know how crazy this sounds but one summer 10 years ago my wife and I saw a Bigfoot standing on the side of the road approximately 9:00 p.m. . it was a dead straight road and I am quite sure it's all the headlights coming at it for a long time. Huge red eyes the size of silver dollars. it looked like it stepped to the right and disappeared into thin air but we were literally 20 feet from it before it decided to step to the right like that. These things are being seen everywhere. The town we were in is called Lisbon and it is extremely rural. There were railroad tracks in close proximity and also a town landfill so maybe it had been on its way to the land so I don't know. The town puts out a monthly flyer thing and there was an ad in the flyer asking if any citizens of Lisbon had spotted a Sasquatch as of late. I did call and a woman at also seen the same creature I believe in the very same proximity. This being wanted us to see it that's all I can say because it stood there and only moved when we were literally 20 feet from it and we were not going fast either. The wife was screaming bloody murder. Something I'll never forget. There are many reports around Litchfield and Windham county here in Connecticut. Sorry I'm so long-winded I just wanted to mention that

The hunters probably traced both the men's and the bear's tracks back to the den. This may have been used as a cautionary tale about smoking while hunting, the cigarette butts found at the seen.

It's a good point! We all think that when we venture into the great outdoors that we're just going to bond with nature but what we don't understand is that we're going to participate in their economy based on calories.

Love your channel, interesting and factual. People say Australia is dangerous but we don’t have large apex predators…except salties and maybe cassowaries. If a bear attacked me, it better like its prey covered in excrement.

😅 I understand but like EVERYTHING can kill you in Australia. Frigging ridiculous!

You shouldn't be hunting bear when you clearly don't really think. That bear probably smelled you and then you just go sit down with your backs turned like nothing would happen. Then you get 3 shots and hit it in the foot. This was probably never going to end well.

It is a very interesting story in the amount of familiarity those guys had with bears and how lackadaisical they were in my opinion

The bear is the victim of this story in the end.

What's with the sudden bear attack. Just cause they smelt like cigarettes and the bear was probably starving?

I don’t know why they think they have the right to go kill the bear.

So let me get this straight, they go into a bears territory at the beginning of spring when they know bears are most aggressive, they know that they are not in good physical shape anymore and they end up getting killed for their own stupidity and the bear gets killed for just being a bear in its own habitat? That doesn’t make sense at all

We are not an apex predator without an army, bears are.

The bear was simply protecting himself from being hunted.

Two hunters. Both with guns. Still get killed.
But their choice to hunt the ultimate hunter.

I try to imagine how I'd feel if I hadn't eaten in 5 or 6 months after coming out of a deep sleep. Then I see two cheeseburgers on legs walk right up to me. I'd be a little surprised for a brief moment but gnawing hunger would overtake me and those cheeseburgers would stand no chance. Now just imagine a ravenous bear. It's burned off all its hibernation weight and has to fatten up all over again to prepare for hibernation in the fall. It has one thing on its mind more than anything else: eat as much as it can. Whatever is walking is a source of protein. That's why as a human, I choose to stay out of their habitat. Any who decide to go in should try to minimize the risk but in the end, there's always a chance however small that the bears will try to prey on you.

What an unsporting way to hunt. I hunted as a kid, but sitting outside a den is like standing over somebody's bed. Gotta say good on the bear for this one.
