It was a cold, blustery day in November, 1999. Gene Moe was hunting deer on Raspberry Island, a very remote and primitive location. Gene knew well that when it snowed, like other areas, deer on Raspberry Island would be pushed to lower elevations to find browse and shelter. The location is a mountainous wilderness filled with hazards and excitement, just the way the 69 year old liked it. He had spent many a season in the backwoods enjoying solitude and peace. This year was possibly the last time he would enjoy this environment. He was going to make the most of it!
After a few days of hunting together, he and his hunting partner, Steve, decided to split up to cover different areas and mitigate their different perspectives and strategy. Gene told Steve that if he heard a shot to come and assist, just to make sure everything was ok.
Even though the hunting partners were only a few hundred yards apart, Gene managed to call in a Sitka Blacktail, the predominant deer species of the area. As twilight was creeping in Gene leaned in over his buck and started to process his harvest. He used his 4 inch Buck knife to gut the deer and started to remove the hide from the carcass. Gene leaned his rifle up against a nearby tree while he worked.
In a chaotic explosion of swaying bushes and growling, an extremely large brown bear emerged from the brush a very short distance away. The bruin was foaming at the mouth, spitting and growling through razor sharp yellow teeth. Armed with only his knife, Gene readied himself for a life or death confrontation. He knew if he ran he would trigger the bear's predatory instincts and be overcome from behind, the most vulnerable direction. He stared the hungry bear in the eyes and conveyed a devotion and commitment met by the bears. The ears of the bear lowered and its head dropped in the final signal of commitment.
The bear surged forward toward Gene. He had no previous experience to fall back on, so he decided to extend the only defensive weapon he had, his skinning knife. He held the blade out straight toward the charging bear and placed his feet far apart to brace for impact. Gene was 6’1” and in great shape. He worked out regularly for hunting and fishing seasons. You see, Gene was a product of the Great Depression and those folks did not shrink from hardship, nor threat. Years of finishing concrete had honed his physique and resolve.
As the giant bear closed the 30 feet that separated the pair, Gene prayed out loud saying, “Lord, I need your help, Help me Lord!”. The bear didn’t hesitate as it drew on years of instinct. As the bear blurred toward Gene, the edge of the knife held forward didn’t strike the bear's mouth, as Gene had intended, but skimmed along the bruin's cheek and sliced open a gash along the length of its skull. The now injured and angered bear clamped down on Gene's right arm around his bicep tearing the muscle and flesh from just above his elbow all the way down to his wrist. From the pain of the initiation of the attack Gene thought his arm was completely torn off.
The direction and force of the bear's focus caused Gene to turn towards the bear and he instinctively wrapped his left arm around the neck of the giant predator. Gene tried to poke the bear in the eye, instead he managed to get his first finger into its ear and push it in as far as he could. The bear reacted with confusion and pulled back. With his arm still around its neck, the bear suplexed Gene like a professional wrestler. Amazed at the ease of which the bear just launched him about ten feet, Gene sprang back to his feet.
The bear, now just about 5 yards away, took a few seconds to review the situation. It stood up on its hind legs and walked toward its adversary. Like a wary boxer, Gene watched the bear's right paw, knowing most are like humans and prefer their right side. Gene circled to his left as the bear struck out with its right paw. Even though Gene pulled his head back, one of the bear's claws bisected his left ear. The bear immediately followed up with a quick swipe from its left paw which landed on Gene’s right leg and knocked him to the ground. The claws from the bear tore up his leg and parted skin, muscle and tendon.

In that case no one needs to go hiking in bear territory, gene was an absolute monster of a man. Most people would pass out in fear just seeing about within 50 yards of them. Let alone continue to analyze and devise counter attacks while already getting mauled by a 700 pound beast of an animal. I love bears but they’re the absolute last thing I’d want to encounter, the fact gene did everything he did makes him a legend in my book.

Gene is an absolute legend. I read about his encounter in another book. Tough as a nails. Something to be said of that generation, my Grandfather dropped a tree on his leg alone in the forest, in his 80's. That wasn't what did him in at all, Alzhymer's got him. He was a concrete man as well, started a company pouring forms after WW2 in Boston, and did real good for himself and his family for generations to come. But for him, it was life in the woods, cutting tree's. Cant take the country out of the man.

One of the nice things about RUclips is when you find a little gem of a channel hiding in a corner with a real human voice! A unique individual who's voice you come to know. A voice that makes you feel like you are having a conversation with that person. So much better than those robotic voices or overused voice-overs.
Most channels who end up being very successful are ones who narrate their own videos, with real people. It's a sign of authenticity, allowing the viewer to feel connected to the channel on a more genuine level. So good for you. I would just watch out for your voice being too monotone and also script reading. These are great stories. Make the voice inflections match the moments. Don't be afraid to go off-script a little. Keep on truckin'. I think you're gonna do pretty good!

Great story and a great man. I got a sense of a bear's power when around 1980 a guy brought a 575 pound Siberian Grizzly to a Texas bar for a wrestling demonstration. Bar patrons were asked to volunteer to wrestle the bear and the crowd would choose the winner. Myself and 4 others were picked from all the volunteers to be the bear's victims! They were all big guys except for me. I was 5'7" and 185 pounds. I was a U.S. Marine previously and was also the bouncer for the bar. I watched the bear effortlessly toss those big guys down and then sit on them to hold them in place. I was last and we had been instructed to walk up to the bear with our arms outstretched and the bear would stand up. We weren't allowed to charge the bear or punch it. All four guys attempted to grab the bear around the neck and wrestle it down, but it just swatted them aside and then grabbed them with his mouth, before wrapping his huge paws and "arms" around them. He wasn't muzzled, but his front teeth were missing. He had his back teeth and we were warned to NOT get our hands in the bear's mouth! I planned my actions and approached the bear with my arms outstretched. The bear raised up on his hind feet and leaned to grab my arm. I sidestepped him to the left, got behind him and hooked my right arm under his right front leg. I put my left leg between his legs and swung him over to my left. He came crashing down! Unfortunately I had only enraged the bear and he sprang back up before I could get on top of him and he towered over me a split second before he crushed me with all of his weight. I was pinned and couldn't move and the bear beat his last opponent. I was the only one to put the bear down, but one of the other guys was with a large party of friends and their cheering guaranteed him the "win." Actually the bear was the only winner, except he was still a captive and still required to perform so his owner could profit from it. Afterwards I felt sorry for the bear and really felt bad that I had participated in the event. Years later this kind of thing was outlawed and I was glad. But, I can honestly tell my grand children and my first great granddaughter that their grandpa wrestled a Grizzly bear and lived to tell about it. How many of you can say that...honestly?

One 80+ year old farmer sold decommisioned telephone poles of his property, so a freind's dad and his mate (both strong farmers) went there to pick them up. The place was hard to get to and the tractor was torn down for repairs. They went up with lifting tongs and starting hauling one post off down to the road between them, sweating and swearing over the biting horseflies and the heat.

Traveling alone in brown bear country is very dangerous. Gene’s hunting partner may have been several hundred yards away but they should have remained together in order to concentrate their firepower in the direction of a charging bear. Safety in numbers! Your rifle should be on a sling over your shoulder as well, not propped against a tree 15 yards away. I spent years hiking in bear country when I lived in Anchorage and you never let your guard down or get too comfortable. To be honest, part of the thrill of hiking in those areas though is the ever-present danger and awareness that you may be hunted by an apex predator on your next hike!

@@Katarina23 Mate even if you fight back your dead bare handed. A black bear you can fight back because it intends to eat you and your roughly the same size muscle mass wise if it's small but even then its not like a human its inhumanly strong aswell for example a black bear weighing 120 pounds (54 kg) was observed turning flat rocks weighing 310 to 325 pounds (141 to 147 kg) by flipping them over with a single foreleg.
And A brown bear makes the black bear seem like a child version of its self not only is it much stronger it has completely different build to a human. No human bare handed could defeat a bear. It's like a jack russle killing a group of fully grown large man who have mma experience and are professional fighters. If he punched it and he had the punch of francis ngannou it would feel like a new born baby tapping your head as a comparison. The best scenario is you manage to scare it if it actually intended to kill you and it wasn't just curiosity you'd be dead.
Scientists agree no human can punch or kick hard enough to inflict any real damage to the bear. You would break your bones trying to inflict damage to the bear. Because the structure of its body is so much denser Seeing as grizzly bears bones are 10× denser then humans. Just as a comparison gorilla bones are only 3x denser then human bones. Grizzly bears possess a biting force of over 1200 PSI, which is enough to crush a bowling ball. They can push 3tone rocks with on limb. a bear can disembowel man or beast with a swipe of the paw and snap the back of a 600kg mose with its paws. It's incomprehensible for a human to beat up a fully developed grizzly bear bear handed.
Regarding hunting a lion or defending your village with spear, knifes and poison arrows. Is completely different to engaging in Bare combat. I could understand if your uncle injured the lion let it bleed out then killed it with a knife In a mount position that's definitely possible and pretty badass but wrestling isn't something lions do they are predators they aim for your jugular and hold to snap your neck the best they do is latch on a go for a ride when the pray is much larger then itself. Or it could of been a young lion not quite coordinated enough and maybe a good 50-100lbs lighter then your uncle sure he could of wrestled it and killed it but a fully grown tiger like the grillzy bear tho slightly less impossible still out human limits. We are built for a completely different reason we are endurance based they are ambush predators the design is completely different. To give prospective a grillzy bears claw swipe generates more power then a horse kick directly to your skull. That's why it'd fatal that force is just too much for human to take. Lions are less dangerous then grillzies due to the size and strength difference but when compared to a human it just doesn't matter they are world's apart in strength.
I've hunted my dad has since he was a kid in his village mainly fox's rabbits and occasionally wolves. Eventually when he moved here boars and kangaroos he has 40+ years of hunting experience he was butcher for many years he knows exactly where to stab the vidals everything and never in a million years would he have the false perception that he could kill a bear or lion bear handed. Dude's big too bigger then me like 189cm 105-110kg lean does marathons extreme sport stiff like that is 60 he retired as a firefighter recently but he still straps a 25kg weight runs 15-25kms daily. And he wouldn't stand against those predators. He does spearfishing like legit I personally have never ever met a human like him I'm above average but he is in a whole other league. And I'm telling you he wouldn't stand a chance in hand to hand combat.

I remember being enthralled by my grandfathers stories of WWII, even though he wouldn't always talk about a lot of detail. Story telling is an art I hope to connect with the young people and let them know how generations of humans passed on info.

God must have been guiding the accuracy of those knife blows, because that man surely was fading fast in the wake of such ferocity and strength.
I can't believe his leg wasn't shattered by that second charge😲

I heard another story where people were attacked by a bear. They also put their guns against a tree. They were fortunate. The bear grabbed the deer they had killed and left.
