Our episode begins with a small group of boys attending a wilderness education program. The boys were soaking up their lessons while attending the National Outdoor Leadership School. NOLS is a non-profit global wilderness school designed to develop leadership and environmental awareness in it’s attendees. Courses range in duration from a few weeks to a full year, and students can earn high school or college credit for successfully completing courses. NOLS was founded in 1965 and has taught thousands of young people how to adventure while they learn about their environment and sustainability.
The 3 sixteen year old boys of the group were Samuel Boas, from Westport, Connecticut, Shane Garlock from Pittsford, New York and Noah Allaire from Albuquerque, New Mexico. The 17 year olds of the group were Joshua Berg from New City, New York, Samuel Gottsegen from Denver, Colorado and Simeon Melman from Huntington, New York. The eldest of the group was 18 year old Victor Martin from Richmond, California.
The boys had honed many wilderness survival skills in the prior weeks and were in the last stretch of their trek. They were navigating through some very thick bushes as there was no distinct trail to follow to their waypoint. They were very watchful for bears and had been instructed if they ran into one, to drop and play dead until the bear left them alone.
The boys were walking single file with Berg and Gottsegen leading the pack, at around 8:30 in the evening. They decided to cross a creek to avoid walking through the thick bush any further. Berg and Gottesgen saw some rustling in the bushes on the other side of the creek and a large brown bear emerged from the right of the rustling bushes. They boys found themselves in the worst case scenario for anyone in the backcountry. They had encountered a sow and her cub. The boys were unarmed and the three adults in charge of the group were trailing far behind the group attending another pack of 7 boys who were lagging behind.
The sow immediately attacked Gottsegen knocking him to the ground with a swipe of her razor sharp claws. The boy immediately began kicking the bear in a feeble attempt to fend off the enraged mother, hellbent on protecting her cub. The bear then clamped her jaws on Gottsegens head and bit him severely. Next she clenched her teeth on each of his arms in turn, tearing his skin and muscle tissue with ease. Then she swatted and bit him in the chest which broke two of his ribs and punctured one of his lungs. Gottsegen screamed and yelled the entire time he was being brutalized as the bear snarled and growled at the same time.
Then she focused her anger on Berg. She attacked him and bit him as well. She swatted him, raking her claws over his flesh and severely wounding him. Then she returned to Gottsegen once more. Then she backed off a bit and Gottesegen started yelling to activate the emergency locator beacon to signal for help. The attack happened so fast that the boys were sent into a state of confusion and terror. They had no time to pull out the bear spray that they had been equipped with for just this occasion.
Next the bear attacked Noah Allair. He was attempting to activate the emergency beacon when the sow emerged from the brush and grabbed the boy and swatted him back and forth tossing his head from side to side. His lung was punctured and he was left battered and confused from the chaos.
Victor Martin was watching the frackas in stunned awe, and the bear ran over and bit one of his legs just above the ankle before he could even react. Then she disappeared into the dense bush. As soon as she departed, it started raining as if signaling nature's regret regarding the occurrence. The boys had no idea if she was still lingering in the area, but started to understand their predicament and developed a plan.
The boys with the least injuries began setting up camp and immediately began triaging their wounded comrades. They had learned the basics about wilderness first aid on their journey and they administered first aid as best they could given the circumstances.

I've been watching this channel enough that I carry bear spray when I drive to wal mart. Never can be too careful.
😂 Funny...if the whole attitude to the dangers of the wilderness and wildness of these areas wasn't so ridiculously gung- ho!!
Going to a Walmart you may need it

Gd Idea!!!
I’ve seen quite a few bears at Walmart before. They’re Frightening!
The speed of the bear attack was unreal. I’m thankful the boys survived.
Sharron,
No, the speed of the attack is totally real.
@@fjb4932 😂😂 fr
Yeah me to, even thow 1 started it off with a kick, like litterly.
Why were they even allowed to travel away from the group by themselves🤦.
Exactly. Wasn’t the best decision.
Thank God they survived such a horrible attack!!! It's so crazy how some of these stories are about the people just rounding a corner and coming across a momma and baby bear!!! Crazy stuff!!
2:02 "The three adults in charge of the group were trailing far behind." That's all you need to know about this attack.
How? what could they have done differently? Bears strike FAST
🤣🤣🤣
It is highly unusual for a bear to go after a group that large. Normally she'd hear them coming. Im guessing it was windy or the stream was loud and drowned out the sound. I agree the adults should have been there, and had their bear spray in hand
I am amazed individuals and groups go into territories like this so casually. In Africa visitors go into nature reserves with guides and are armed. Spring is the time sows are gonna have cubs? Dusk is the time they hunt for food? Why doesn' t the US create proper nature reserves, requiring permission to enter, with guides? Invest more in research on bears and be able to track them so that visitors can avoid areas where they are? Reservations were created for Native Americans (👎)why can't the same be done for dangerous wild animals?? Still i'm forgetting US doesn't really have a government which looks after its most vulnerable citizens, ( hence its existing permissive gun laws). I'm glad i live in a nanny state. 😉😄🇬🇧
@@betsygray9505 I'm glad you live in a nanny state too. More room here for me.
I just don’t understand how you go In the woods in Alaska and not have proper protection.
I just don't understand why they go there .Big superior human mentality maybe .Leave nature alone to live their life ..
Experts told them as long as they had there masks on they wld.be safe..
*@albuterol71... They had protection... just play dead smh*
I did it, by myself, in my 20s, and it's just dumb luck. In my experience at least. Just lucky enough to not have a bad thing happen, just stupid.
@@charsback 😂😂😂
So glad they all survived 💖
What bothers me is that the school instructs their students that upon coming to a bear, to just lay down and play dead. That’s concerning!
@@alvaroq2024 "play dead" As a last resort - as it can sometimes work with brown bears and grizzlies, but never with black bears. They just turn you over and start with the stomach. Your scream will be so loud it will travel through time and space. On 3Aug1778, at "Nuovo Regio Ducale Teatro alla Scala", the audience - waiting for opening passages of Antonio Salieri's "Europa riconosciuta" - will be startled, to hear your pain.
Moral of the story is, if you have bear spray, it needs to be dangling from your waist and not buried in a backpack! Probably would have been a good idea to have some sort of LOUD noise maker too. Seems this education program needs to do some bear spray training also like is done for firearms training.
Bear spray in a holster at your side….
Bear spray in a backpack is no help at all. In fact, in a holster on your belt isn't much better UNLESS it can be aimed & discharged without having to unholster it.
Make sure your holster allows that. If it doesn't, get a new holster.
No chance of fumbling it then.
And incidently, the old advice is still true: a black bear SEES you as food & will eat you, so fight back as best you can. A grizzly bear generally isn't looking at you as food, so playing dead MAY work. (Though once you've dead, he may very well eat you. Not that you'll care very much at that point...)
If it’s a brown bear, lay down. If it’s a black bear, fight back and if it’s a white bear, say goodnight!
Bear spray should be carried in your hand while in the brush, more open areas it can be in a hip holster
.44 magnum revolver, nothing less will do. Bear spray isn't effective on a grizzly already charging with intent to kill. There are many cases/stories of attacks where bear spray failed to help the victim.
Good to hear none of these young men lost their asses to an angry bear! Thank goodness they escaped.
They didn't actually escape. The bear completed it's purpose and went on about it's business.
That must have been like THE worst nightmare for those boys.
Gulp! Sounds terrifying, the trouble with bear spray is having it to hand at the right moment - think I would be fumbling too much in fear. Glad the boys could do some first aid. Thanks for your work 🐻.
Not if it was clipped on ur belt like it should be....do people carry guns they might need in there back packs....no...
It was absolutey negligent to the point of reckless to have these ill-prepared children (a phrase I use for many of this ilk regardless of age) in this terrain unaccompanied by a properly armed and experienced person. Fortunately for them this was not a predatory event.
Career Alaska State Trooper, now retired.
Im guessing the organization gave the kids rudimentary instructions on bear spray and also told them they didn't have to worry about bears in such a large group.
The trouble with bear spray is the number of empty canisters found next to the dead and the mauled and the wind blowing it back in your face and that it doesn't deter an attack ( sometimes good for mild curiosity sometimes not) and the nitwits who think it makes them safe. Bears are known to complete an attack riddled with bullet holes - 10, 20 or more - they needed heavily armed guides and the outfit that sent them out should be disbanded.
We buckle our seatbelts, just in case. Why not carry a firearm in bear country, just in case?
Most of us do. Rural Alaskan.
@@JD-tn5lz Maybe that's why most of us aren't mauled and killed by bears. lol
100% sensible advice, with out firearms people in the woods are basically nature's Chimichanga.
When I lived in the Adirondacks everybody would take these precautions and we didn’t even have this type of bear. I just can’t with people going into the woods or wilderness unarmed. When we hiked, we carried.
I certainly do. I live in bear country in far N. Calif. and I don't go outside on my property without a weapon and a can of bear mace. I have had to fire warning shots two separate occasions for the same bear, in late 2020. Better prepared than dead.
I agree if 3 adults why was at least one not out in front with these boys?
Never go into big bear country unarmed. Never. It takes an incident like this to remind folks to have weapons in the event your faced with this type horror. Bear spray was carried but not where any if them could access it. Had they stayed together and leaders armed with say shotguns with slugs (BRENNEKE my recommendation) this event may never have taken place. The large crowd of people may have been heard and sow and cubs may never have been seen. The guys who went ahead I'd bet made little noise and the end result is what happened. Rather place blame on the leadership that allowed the victims to go on ahead out if the large group knowing they were in bear country.
First thing to consider before planning to go on a hiking trip is research the area you’re hiking to see if it’s bear region. And if it says no bear habitat in the are then still bring the bear spray. Take no chances and nothing for granted when planning to hike in woodland areas. We just never know what’s lurking ahead.
Well, It's a Rainy and Cold Night Here in Knoxville, Tennessee . But, I'm Happy Because I'm Still Awake When "Scary Bear Attacks" Uploads a New Video.... YOU ROCK BEAR MAN!! 💯🐻💯🐻💯🐻💯
Thank you very much! I appreciate you watching our channel!
I don’t live far from Knoxville. Love scary bear attacks.
Same here down in Shelbyville TN
This happened about 3 hours from where I live.
It's got to be a generational thing, but when I was 17 in 1974, myself and 2 tough buddies same age encountered a grizzly and drove it away with pepper spray that we had strapped to our belts and ready to use. We also carried long knives. Seems these kids had the bear spray packed away in their back packs/no knives. What were the "instructors" thinking ? seems standards have dropped completely in common sense these days.
Slowly catching up, listening to these stories. I was looking for a channel that narrates these incidents.Thank you! Best wishes from a listener from Germany. And I have subscribed, of course.
So glad to have you! Thank you very much!
@@scarybearattacks thank You, Sir.
I am guessing that the mama bear quite possibly, had recently eaten, and that is what saved the kids from not being killed.
I carry a 454 Casual in bear country. It was the biggest revolver available when I bought it. There are more powerful ones available now. I think everyone needs to be armed in bear country. Bear spray is great but I also want a capable side arm at the very least
I totally agree… no way I’m going in bear country without one…
Is it 10mm auto enough or not, say if place 2,3 good shots
?
People act like bears don't always see you as food, but I don't like those odds very much. When a bear starts coming after you, do you tell the bear he's in the minority and hope he realizes what he's doing? I'm not swimming in the ocean with sharks or messing around in grizzly country.
I couldn't agree more!! Bear spray is great, but just in case, I'd definitely like a gun, too!! Some of these bears seem to be able to take a bullet that should drop them, but then develop superbear strength and just like a Timex - they just keep on tickin!! It's rare, but when you consider how rare bear attacks truly are, yeah - I'd rather be safe than sorry!! Is it me or does it seem like there are more bear attacks nowadays?? Or hearing more because of all the stories on RUclips?? My great aunt and uncle lived on Drummond Island in the UP of Michigan, and we fought over a certain bedroom because the garbage cans were right outside of it so it was rare, but we'd hear them sometimes and even watch them if we were lucky enough to actually see them!! The next morning, whether we'd seen them or not, Aunt Ervadine would still send us out to gather blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries for pancakes, and i just realized it, but we weren't scared....huh. I never gave it much thought really - I guess we all thought they only came at night? S Now, my aunt and uncle are gone, but I cherish those memories!!
sounds like those instructers fell way short on teaching people about travel in bear country number 1 rule never go into bear country without a fire arm of enough power to stop a bear attack and the training to be able to use it safely and the three adults in charge failed at their job
I love your channel !! The stories have such great detail. Been a subscriber for several months now. I watch at least one episode every night before bed. Anybody else guilty of this pleasure ?
Thank you!
I like to watch at least 5 scary bear attacks before hitting the rack.
Wow! Ya don't mess with mama. I surprised she didn't drag one of them into the bush for dinner. They certainly were unfortunate to have that run in, but they were damn lucky that they all lived to tell the tale.
predation isnt common in circumstances like this
mother bears defending their cubs have two goals
eliminate the threat
get the cubs away from the area
@@sk8legendz True enough, but she had herself and the baby to feed and she had her hands on a seven pack heh, heh.
The school said they had never had a bear attack in the 40 years it was there. So that tells me they were complacent.
Bears can run very fast! They look fat but they can move!
Addicted to this channel. Thanks for this new video for me to watch as I wait for the ambien to hit.
When I’m in bear country I usually completely cover my body in aluminum foil in an attempt to fool the bear into thinking I’m a robot.
Bear attacks on robots are extremely rare.
Yes. I'm very excited when I see such advances in bear conflict resolution planning. Cutting edge. Progressive. Things are getting better everyday.during my last bear encounter, I followed instructions and stuck the bear spray nozzle directly in my mouth and depressed the lever. It worked! I remember nothing! I have no idea how the bear responded, or if there even had been a bear at all, but I was so high and disoriented! And I couldnt breathe. It was an amazing best case scenario.
LMAO!
Yeah but... Bears love baked potatoes.

Breh. Lmao.
I don't know how anyone can get a good night's sleep while camping in bear country. I would be up all night in paranoid terror. Without proper training using firearms or bear spray we're at their mercy. In addition, a mother bear doesn't reason that we're not a threat to her cubs, she just does what instinct tells her to. I'm glad they cancelled the rest of the expedition to protect the students. Those who risked their lives to save their classmates should be praised. This was a riveting story of survival. Great job!
Thank you!
In heavy cover, you will be lucky if you even get one shot on a charging bear before it reaches you. It's hard to shoot when your instincts are telling you to run for your life. Many people will shoot right over a charging bear as its closing the distance.
This is why I study Grizzly Judo CQC techniques
🍺😆
You're mostly correct. Mindset is the biggest part of it though. I've lived in rural Alaska most of these last twenty years and I recreate in remote areas. I've also responded to and handled many nuisance bear reports in my lifetime.
You have to have a predatory mindset even if you aren't hunting. You have to pay attention and be in tune to all of your senses, keep your head on a swivel, eyes, ears, and nose wide open...if you get a "sense" that something is wrong, pay attention to it and get your gun into your hand right now and stand still until you can identify the situation.
Then when it's time to act, act decisively and violently. If you shoot, shoot again and again and again and...
This story is so sad I'm shocked there hasn't been any more attacks than that you have a bunch of juveniles walking thru bear country n the adults r lingering behind wth n u leave them with bear spray these youngins r shocked when a grizzly just appears out of nowhere there not remember to use bear spray i praise them for there courage n firmness to fight back these young men are warriors for their coverage they needed better supervisors watching over them in territory like this really upsets me.
All 3 adults were trailing....we're they weapon-less too? This trip sounds very badly planned.
It’s good to note that these bear attacks are the exception, not the norm. They’re critters of solitude and opportunity, not mindless bloodthirsty monsters. Even the Mothers with cubs, who are hardwired to destroy whatever comes near their young, even another bear. Its why one should always walk with a bell or a clinking can on their person, so that way a bear always knows their position and can take her cubs away from potential human contact. Whenever I backpack in bear country I always walk with my two metal mugs on the outside of my pack (along with my sidearm handy) despite how annoying it is to some. A surprised bear is a dangerous bear.
True they aren't monsters, however we have had more predatory attacks and encounters than you hear about.
Don't surprise a bear, sure. Absolutely.
However Do Not forget they can be and often are predatory. Especially in areas (i.e. National Parks) where there is no hunting pressure on them.
Retired Alaska State Trooper
So very glad they survived. Bears and their temperament vary. I love bears absolutely beautiful Apex predators but if it comes down to survival, God, please be prepared. 🙏❤️
That must be like a nightmare in real life. You try to run but you just can't run fast enough, try to fight back but you aren't strong enough, try to scream but you aren't loud enough in the bushes.
This IS an absolute NIGHTMARE as this man said!!!! It's truly shocking that bears are so intelligent as well as powerful. Please, please all you hunters out there.. LISTEN TO EVERY SINGLE video on this channel, two and three times so you hear every single word. It terrifies me to think of any person getting killed by these forest monsters!!!! Godspeed my friends, Godspeed
Bear spray should be readily accessible in a holster. The boys should have been drilled and given practice.
The adults were negligent if they did not provide the boys with the proper setup and training.
Always carry an AK 47 wherever you go, even if it’s only the supermarket

When you are young, (or not so young) you are striving to find out who you are and what you are capable of. These type of challenges change you-if not kill or maim you. Don't go out all-stupid and leave things to luck. Be prepared, cautious, smart and calculate the risks.
Bear spray is not sufficient enough in Alaska. You better have a side arm big enough at all times when out in Alaska woods. Its a unwritten law, and most in Alaska that live out in the wilds no this ! The adults in charge in Alaska of this organization know very well the dangers of taking to many at one time, and are fully responsible for endangering a person/persons life !!!
I agree.
The problem is the psychological projection human's practice on bears. Bears are not cute, not noble, not peaceful, not harmless and certainly don't want humans speaking up for them.
Bears are nature's most brutal eating machine. They will eat whatever their eyes target. With bear's there are no hard feelings you are just food for their belly.

How anyone goes hiking in bear country without a rifle in their arms, patrol style, is beyond me. I would not go anywhere with bears without some sort of high powered rifle, and I’d treat it just like my Army patrols. This enemy in the woods is far scarier than any human you will encounter.
The bear is on its territory so is no enemy .Any who carry guns are ...Mothers tend to protect their young or do you think this only applies to humans ..
@@HelenaMikas give me a break! In an encounter with a bear, the bear is definitely the enemy to the human and the human is the enemy or prey to the bear. And the bear doesn't own the territory where it lives. Humans are allowed to go wherever they want to go on this planet. Humans have every right to kill an attacking bear.
While the adults should have been with both groups (at least 1 adult per group), or maybe the entire group stick together, I'm very impressed with the boys ability to get their heads together after the attack, send out a GPS signal and render first aid to the injured. I've watched so many bear attack videos where even seasoned veteran hunters, guides, forest rangers etc didn't do half as well when attacked by a bear. Very impressed with the boys actions after the fact. It would have probably been better if at least one of the group had been carrying the spray at the ready, since there were several boys. They could have switched off on who'd carry the spray (and lead) every half hour or hour. It just seems like it would make sense to have at least 1 person carrying spray at the ready at all times. They did all survive. Alaska is a very dangerous place. I have been very near where this attack occurred.
These stories are not only interesting, but they are tremendously informative and educational IF people will open their minds to the lessons. In this day and age where self-preservation is seen as a fault, people are needlessly putting themselves in harm's way. The sentiment among some animal-lovers is that it's better to be eaten alive than harm an animal. It's a sickness borne of ignorance and misinformation. If you're going to be where predators are - whether they be animal or human - then respect yourself enough to arm yourself with tools to insure your survival. This pious attitude that animals are "our friends" is just leading to death after death.
Thank you and take care!

they are lucky that momma wasnt hungry and was just protecting her cubs
Besides Bearspray - would an air horn deter a bear - since they're sometimes scared off by shouting or loud noises?
Yes. Loud air horns work sometimes
The key word in your post is "Sometimes" as in sometimes they're scared off by shouting or loud noises. And sometimes they aren't scared off by loud noises. It's best to have a powerful firearm and bear spray.
Always carry a gun when in the woods. Man is no match for a bear
If this is the Bears “House”, they are reacting to uninvited visitors...like a home intrusion.
LMAO! You say this as if bears only attack humans who come into "bear country" but bears are constantly attacking and killing other animals that live in "bear country". This isn't about humans being uninvited house guests. And it isn't the bear's house. Bears have no special right to the areas they live in and humans have the right to hike in those same areas. If a bear charges a human the human should shoot the bear with a potent enough weapon to put the bear down.
I reckon this story is kind of a bear attack story, but this here one time my Uncle Augustus was rustlin up some possum for the stewpot out back of the holler, here in Jefferson County. Since he was only hunting possum he was armed with only a stout stick. Well Sir, he done surprised a black bear in a briar patch, which commenced to cuffing him about, knocking the stick clean outen his hands. Quick as a whistle he found hisself unarmed. Being a resourceful feller, Uncle Gus calmly waited for the bear to stand up and when he did, old Augustus placed a well aimed kick just behind the dink, severing that critter's urethra, which caused him to piss out a bucket or two of blood. That there bear, began to weaken and tire until it peacefully expired due to blood loss. They was eating bear stew that night all up and down the crick, thanks to my own kinfolk perfecting a hunting technique, today referred to as the Augustus Maneuver. Thank you.
Lmfao...I almost fell out of my fuckin seat laughing at this one! Hahahaha

It's very unusual for a bear to take on a crowd of seven people like that. The kids wouldn't have been too concerned about bears in a group that size. I wonder if they were all carrying bear spray, and had it handy in a shoulder harness? Lots of people carry it in a backpack pocket where you cant get to it. Also lots of people freeze up if confronted with a scenario like that. People seem to think guns are better, but in a situation that happens fast like that, a person would be as likely to get shot as a bear. They did a great job with the emergency care of injured friends.
Another great video buddy.. thank you.
You got it my friend!
Question from the UK where we don't have bears: What are the ingredients of bear spray and is it effective?
Capsaicin oil extracted from hot peppers plants
It's basically a stronger form of mace. Yes, usually it will drive a bear away, and will temporarily blind it if sprayed into its eyes.
Most often not. It is favored by ppl who pretend they live in fairy land however.
Interesting. I have read from the experts that bears normally will not attack a group of people, even when its a mother bear with cubs. I've actually seen a video of a mother grizzly with cubs walking right through two groups of people. She kept an eye out but did not attempt to attack anyone. Wonder what it was about the group of teenage boys that caused the bear in this story to attack when there were so many people. Maybe a lot depends on the temperament of the bear.
Could have been a team tried petting a cub. Or that the cub got curious and walked to close to one of them. So the momma over reacted a bit. Or could have been a momma bear who lost it's first cubs by not being protective enough the first time so this time felt it needed to eliminate all those in sight to keep their babies safe.
Because they weren't a group, two of them single filed and started her. Playing dead would have probably lessened the severity of this attack most certainly.
@@kica4396 depends on the bear for grizzlies yes for black bears no.
Also I did listen to the story.
@@kica4396 again never said it wasn't.
@@kica4396 oh my. It wasn't for you just other people that may not full understand. Okay my little nugget.

I haven't even started it yet....but I know Imma love it, your Channel is dope bro.....
Thanks man! I really appreciate you tuning in :)
Prays for the injured. They should have been packing 44 mags, 454 casual, short barreled 12gag, even having their pepper spray in hand would have minimized the encounter.
44 magnum desert eagle
I wouldn't let my child to that program , that's for sure.
Hey mr narrator you’re getting very good at this .
Thank you!
The adults were 'lagging behind?" I'm sure the parents were fine when they heard that little ditty. Those kids all froze. Those adults should have been right there.
"Adults" usually freeze too. Especially these tree-hugging types,
I carry bear spray to the gym now. In the middle of the city, just in case
God protected them that day. I'm so glad they survived. They had wounds but survived. They were very lucky.
Another great video, thank you for your hard work doing this...👍💯👌🙈🙉🙊
This is the fault of the instructors who should've been with the entire group of boys. Bear spray is totally worthless if you don't have it in hand ready for use at a moments notice.
The instructors should have been armed with at least shotguns with slugs. Sometimes bear spray despite propaganda doesn't work.
ABSOLUTELY correct. Spray is also not instantly effective, is susceptible to weather, and usually not operated by someone trained with it.
I spent a career in rural Alaska. Still live here. Bear spray can be effective at dissuading a curious bear, but it's nearly worthless against a predatory attack. This was a reflexive defensive encounter as far as the bear was concerned.
The damage control conducted by this "school" was completely disgusting.
😱 Wowcher what a shocking story, I am not surprised it still haunts them to this day, it would me. So glad no of them were killed. Another great video thanks 💖😁
Thanks
Be prepared to be un-preprepared... Always..
Bears can run incredibly fast. Humans can’t outrun them. And bears are also incredibly stealthy when they want to be.
I had a huge Brown bear run up to me loudly and then sneak off through the alders and I never heard a twig snap.
@@spoopy9689 As a trap? lol. That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen posted. Bears don't have the mental capacity to plan traps. Of course when wounded they will hide and rest, all animals will do that. The difference is bears will defend themselves by attacking.
@@spoopy9689 Yes I have far, far more than you or likely anyone you know. Anyone claiming bears use their own blood to set traps has listened to too many drunken stories.

Bear spray fails once again. A sidearm and they could have repelled her from yards away. Even residents on Svalvard will not use bear spray, they always carry arms.
Notice not one boy thought of the bear spray not even the onlookers...The problem with youth..No Wisdom
ALL bear attacks are Scary Bear Attacks
That is probably the point of this channel
@@LaurenSchraderMusic I would think so. At one point in my life I had three mountain bikes that were worth about 14 grand between them. I used to leave the country for cycling events on a regular basis. Want to know what cured me and made a commuter cyclist of me? I was up in British Columbia riding with a friend and we got chased an insanely long time on this downhill trail. All I kept thinking was one mistake and I am bearshit. If it had been on level ground or on an uphill, there is no way I would be here today.
@@paulprovenzano3755 Christ sake fuck that. I live in Colorado and we don’t go hiking without a gun and spray, but honestly I am more scared of mountain lions, although black bears are known to intentionally hunt and eat humans.
"Humdrum Bear Attacks"
uuuum...no. 😆
@@henryrodgers1752 Yeah. All the times they’re only in it for the picnic basket tend to go unreported and go directly to TickTock or whatever.
It's a brave Bear that will take on seven teenagers!
Not when it weighs 1200 pounds and stands 4 1/2 feet at the shoulder... they don't give a fuck about 7 teens.
No, not called bravery, it's Motherly love & instinct, easily understood if a guy has ever had the fortune of seeing a human mother with that kind & that much love & instinct, though very rare in humans, not so at all, in animals.
If only mummy Bear had access to Family Planning this attack could have been avoided!
Victor Martin . Ayy BAY SHIT !! My nigga got them survival instincts off top . Got away with a koo bite to the ankle . Ok I see you big nigga .
Just a small correction. At 3:59 you state that the boys “shoved a plastic bag into the gaping chest wound of one seriously wounded boy before bandaging it with gauze” I think you meant the other way around. It is standard procedure to cover a suckling chest would with a bandage and then a sheet of cling film (I think it’s called Seran wrap in USA)
Apart from that I really like your channel. But pedants gonna pedant and all that.
Don't apologize for knowing stuff. TY
Im wondering why the bear didn't hear them coming. Im guessing they were by a noisy stream or the wind was drowning them out.
You make it sound as if the bear should have heard the people and the bear had some responsibility to avoid the people. Do you understand that bears are wild animals? They have no responsibility to do anything. They do what they do. People are the ones with the responsibility to be prepared when they're out in the wilderness AND if they aren't prepared then they'll be lucky if they survive.
??? So you think bears aren't just as likely to attack what they hear??
@@russelldemello5086
General grizzly bear behavior, they don't seek out conflict, they aren't looking for trouble, and generally avoid humans and other bears. But grizzlies are notorious for being reactive to surprise encounters, it triggers defensive behavior. There are signs all over Alaska and Canada saying " bears dont like surprises" Surprise close encounters are the number one trigger for bear attacks, and often occur in settings where there is background noise and they dont hear people coming.
It is not the bears responsibilty, it is the humans responsibility hiking while in bear territory
@@glendamcgee1779
To answer your question, bears generally move off if they hear people coming. They are not looking for trouble. Most bear attacks on people are defensive, and happen because, they are startled, defending a food source or cubs. People get inside their comfort zone. Statistically predatory bear attacks are relatively few.
I'm really looking forward to going to Alaska and feeding the grizzly bears.
Please don't, because if you do it won't end well...just ask Timothy Treadwell and Amy Huegunard....oh wait you can't....they were eaten Alive by a coastal Brown. Bear in Katmai National park 🏞️

Most definitely, one of your most harrowing tale next to the Japanese baby head bitten off by a bear.
Alright, bearspray is like the red headed step child of bear defence, but if you need to go limp wristed, carry the party can on you belt/on your hip. I've been through many bears, and None are the same, nor do they have razor sharp claws, but they will rock your world and shred you. I never advise lying curled up, unless you want Jesus to find your remains there. I'd rather fight like David. Even naked with a toilet trowel, I held my ground yelling and banging my hands together. The bear barked and growled 6 feet away in a dark solo camp, but eventually it retreated. I did not, not one step. Kiss flowers later, but when you are in the fight...fight.
