- We are currently creating a Fish Locker HQ and throughout the coming weeks/months we will tackling several projects for that. Here is the first piece of homemade furniture. Built by hand and all from reclaimed and recycled materials.
Don't forget to check out our sister channel @TheFishLocker for awesome fishing, foraging and underwater videos.

Definition of a good man... GET THINGS DONE 👍
Nice to see plans done the old way with pen and paper rather than sketchup. You've not only learnt to make a set of shelving but also a set of bunk beds👍🛠
I saw them as adorable bunks for a kindergartener having a friend for a sleep over!
Once an Engineer - Always an Engineer. Excellent John. (Hello James!!)
Not a bad bit of woodwork at all ya did that very well fairplay
Love this demo as you can stack them too. You can also apply the same principles when making bunk beds.
Both my sister and i were active in designing and building our cabin beds as kids. They weren't big rooms so we had a desk and a cupboard, with drawers underneath. My older sister had a bigger room and as an artist needed an easel type desk, which was at the end of the bed. Being a teen she had a single sofa in the middle.
Having a "Jack of all Trades" Dad really helped teaching me as we moved into our first proper house that needed a full reno, when i was 35 weeks pregnant. We managed to plan in getting the electrics and plumbing updated as well as us installing the new kitchen a week before he birth. After the birth recovered from the emergency c section and cervical cancer treatment, we took to task the 5 layers, no joke of wallpaper! It was like scraping back time. The kitchen even had wallpaper on the ceiling, not to mention the artex on the other ceilings!
I can't stress enough the important of teaching your kids how to DIY. Changing a plug or light bulb on a lamp is a great start. Build a bird house box is another great beginner. Get them introduced to tools and how to use them.
I learnt so much when my dad installed the central heating in our flat too. Think i was the same age as James and my kid when i learnt about welding copper pipes. My Dad openly wanted boys but didn't stop the teaching and learning and made us more independent. I sure taught my hubby a few things, with no xp, especially when i couldn't do the stuff heavily pregnant.
You mention you are going to make a desk for your office .I made a desk thirty years ago from the stern of a old rowing boat for my son it is still going strong my grandson has it now Ikea eat your heart out you live in the right area for old boats it could make a great project keep safe tight lines
Great job John!
Simply creative...
Good video Jonh please make more.
Nicely done, looks great. My Dad was a Machanic by trade but he went to nightschool to learn woodworking. He made tons of stuff when I was growing up and he also did some Mechanical jobs at the weekend for friends, just to make some extra money I think. So I spent a lot of time watching him and helping (i was probably in the way more than anything) but he always let me help. I remember being under tables a lot with my plastic tool kits working on pretend Cars has a child. Later as I got older we did some woodworking jobs together like walk-in wardrobes, fencing, shelving & such.
The knowledge that I picked up from my Dad just from watching when I was young and as I got older was amazing, I didn't really know how I knew some of the stuff, so seeing you and James reminds me so much of those Day's quite a long time ago now that are magical memories for me. We still talk about some of the jobs we did, my Dad is in his eighties now and has a dicky heart so he can't do the stuff he used to but those memories are timeless and so wonderful to have.
Pallets have some fantastic wood.
Looks good.
I built furniture at a major furniture manufacturing plant for about 8 years.
A man after my own heart recycle and build from salvaged wood immense satisfaction , also always have a good assistant well done James
Whoopee! More Woodspoiling from the Fishlocker Workshop! 😁😁 I watched this with my headphones on John, and I don't know the cause, but from 2:30 to 3:30, I lost you in my right lughole! Much sanding of some excellent recycled wood - I've got a collection of pallet wood here, but jealous of those 4x2's! You'd love my Planer/Thicknesser languishing across the channel - no sanding required! Nice design well executed. Love the little assistant too! Stay safe & well all of you. 👍👍
Fish locker diy channel . Works for me !
You might like the look of "french cleats" to hold irregular shapes on the wall.
Drills with all you drill bits .
Screw bits next to your drill bits next to a palm trimmer.
Power tools with accessories.
Sanding bits , chisels , dust masks 😷 and gloves. All at a height little fingers can’t reach .
Just an idea John .
Always loved taking reclaimed scrap and off-cuts and turning it into something.
Can't beat it.
Apart from feeling smug with myself I was obviously saving the planet , and also enjoying getting 'owt for nowt .
I am so tempted to start a campaign for you to get into a self build of a reclaimed pallet boat :D
Couldn't resist that.
boat 👍
Good job!
I made a smaller version of the bird box yesterday...thanks
Your a man after my own heart John spent last week making a garden bench out of a fence post surplus to requirements cut into four for the legs and glued,a thick plank topped with pallet wood I,m no joiner but well pleased with the result relatives asking if I would make them one the same so result like it that you use a workmate had mine for forty years.
I have no intention showing this to HMV. I will have sore ribs from the nudging. "why don't you try to make something like this. " Power cords tools that whirl growl hiss spit are like cobra snakes with me fighting like John Cleese from monty python.. I am only allowed to use a hot glue gun under supervision. Me trying to join two pieces of wood together is beyond me. Medical ,trauma emergencies fixing up busted people no problem . But to watch you doing your pallets . amazing. Not only that you were smiling . Great job lad. Your videos are a great education. relaxing able to dream . should have would have could have .but my path went in a different direction . Medical . So i watch you in admiration .
My warmest regards to your family and the lobsters hiding under the rocks. . .
I have 8 pieces of 4×4×48 inch oak and 5 pieces of 4×4×48 inch maple that home depot threw into their scrap dumpster. I can't understand when people look at me like l'm crazy when l'm removing hundreds of dollars of wood....For free! We should crowd fund to get you a good chop saw😊
I find that the expense/cost
is the #1 inhibiting factor for most people plastic shelving is minimum 30 usd if you can find anything at that price range so yeah reclaimed wood is the best way to get a great shelf on the cheap looks great some stain and sealer would finish it up no splinters for the baby
ps I think it double as bunk beds
Loved this video! Great job with lots of character in the recycled materials! And such a sweet family! Smiling. Thanks so much for sharing...ATB
Brilliant John good planning always works great start on your projects
Nice work John thanks for sharing 👍🏻
👍🏆 thanks!
🤣🤣🤣 John, Dude. Love your content. Thank you buddy. 👍🏻👍🏻
Looks nice and solid John and you could always turn them into bunk beds lol
Great job, love the character of the recycled wood
Thanks John, I’ve got an idea for a recycling bin project, just so I can keep ‘em tidy. I may have to do the same though with shelve! They’re great looking cheers for sharing
good job Sounds working fine
great video John as usual, very informative, just the kind of stuff I like to get upto, cheers.
Absolutely loved this, John. You've inspired me to do similar work for our new home, when we move.
Ideal looks great just what I need for my shed 👍 Ps a good project for winter insulation and fit out your van with a bed and interior lighting ideal for trips fishing done mine during lock down.
Solid build
Great video! As the brits say...SMASHING!!
great job, looks lovely
Please could you show how to anchor a small boat with a small hatch as Access to the front of the boat.
I see you set the anchor from the side of your boat, how do get the anchor line to the font roller or cleat ?
Great stuff John, looks really good and will last you a lot longer than an equivalent from a flat packed furniture supplier mentioning no names! If you could come up with a way of storing rods and tackle in the same unit that would be perfect for me!
Cheeky smiles from james
Looks great. Job well done. How about maybe some rod wall mounts to get them off the floor and accidentally becoming damaged 👍
Smashing vid John....hello to James and Hannah.....best wishes....Bob(I O W )
what about making your own fish tank stand, might be to much to ask ya to make the tank too! then u could have some lovely fish in your office, doesn't have to be huge, your storage unit has used most of the room up lol, I use to work in the aquatics industry as I did the angling one too, and we used to make our own stands and tanks etc.... for out back to quarantine new stocks of fish coming into store. Thank your Fish Locker office would look nice with an aquarium.. maybe even do a cool water shore theme with some of the critters you find while beach combing!
Superb. Very talented. Couldnt have bought something better.
I'd hate to think what it would look like if I'd have had a go.
I have got a few ideas for you but they wouldn't suit your home probably suit mine better 😂😂
Take care!
Brilliant project mate and saves the pennies;) I’ll have a think of what could be a good addition to ur new office if I think of anything that could be useful for it I’ll write to you pal got me thinking now what I can do at home with recycled wood always enjoy your videos have been watching you for ages now always happy always content top man all the best for the future
Fantastic workmanship, do you have any tips breaking up the pallets without ruining the timber? Also up scale your plans and you would have bunk beds kids would love. Cracking vid again Jane lol cheers
Love the rustic look John, would you consider staining your office furniture? keep safe the Locker family as it is still out there.👍👍👍🎣🎣🎣
Hi John, first I need to say you did an awesome job! Secondly I'd like to do a recommendation. Since you're going to build all the furnuture by yourself, you could consider to purchase a table saw. It's not that big of an investment and you go through wood in a second. Also prevents a lot of time of sanding. Since I purchased one for the new shed I can't live without one. Just a little tip! Can't wait for the next videos to show up!
By the way, I also made my own desk with a large plank they use as a bridge if workers need to open up a side walk and with black scaffolding tube setup from the construction market for not even €100. If you'd like a picture of the setup to make it yourself, you can send me a message👍🏻
Best regards, Benjamin
I was just about to comment on how great it is that he’s using traditional tools. I’d be straight onto my table saw!
Hi john
John - Here in the Colonies, we refer to the larger wood members as 2 X 4 based on their dimensions. How are the referred to in the UK?
Good work John. I have a concern about health and safety . To save time explaining in a long winded way, may I be so bold as to ask you to read about pallets from associated-pallets.co.uk. I think it's important info that maybe the less informed of us should know and you have the perfect means to advise, at least your subscribers. What you decide to reveal is obviously up to you. The mask that you were wearing is not appropriate for what you are doing too. Take this advice in good heart. I have many years experience in health and safety and leave it up to you what you do with the advice. A respirator mask is advisable with the correct filters for each job that you perform (not expensive these days fortunately).
My regards as usual to you all.
John I’ll stick to not catching fish 🤪🤪 I’m even worse at woodwork 🤪🤪
I'm good at not catching fish, and I love a bit of creative woodwork or metalwork, but unlike John, I haven't got anywhere dry to perform in! 👍👍
Hi whoever reads this
Great work pal awsome even a joiner would be proud off that, you find any crabs or marine life ?😂😂All the very best from Scotland 🏴🏴🏴
I refuse to show this to my hubby, the first thing out of his mouth will be. NO I am not bringing any more pallets home from work!!! :D
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Nice video James, I also love reclaiming pallets. Any thoughts on storage for fishing rods? It seems they always wind up butt down leaning in a corner - when you have surf poles, fly rods, boat poles, it makes a mess sorting them out to go.
Excellent john do you have any carpentry experience?
Hi john where did you get your netting from to make prawn push net many thanks John from Anglesey
👍godspeed
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽😀
No sound mate
David Horlor - Sounds working fine for me? Anyone else not getting sound?
Iv got sound 🙂
I lost sound for a while around 2:30 minutes.
Sound was all ok all the way through for me john 👍
Sound all good John
It's too bad you talk too much and does not show how to do it step by step, show your face less and more "how to". (not trying to be mean :)
