- A documentary about the history of Venice, Florida created in 1976 by Hack Swain Productions, a motion picture producer in Sarasota, Florida. Filmed in 16mm, the film utilizes historic stills and home movies in addition to original photography and historic re-enactments. The voice-over narration is enhanced by audio interviews of personalities from pioneer families.
Yes, Florida - not California or Italy. We produced this in 1976 on 16mm movie film long before video and the possibility of a universal audience on RUclips. We never thought it would have anything but a local audience. Thanks for your comment. Mike Swain
Great film guys....and Venice is STILL a great place to live.
Thanks. My brother, Tony, and I produced a series of history films with our father's studio, Hack Swain Productions … Venice, Sarasota, Manatee, Clearwater, and Polk County. This was before video so all of these were shot and edited on 16mm motion picture film. Thanks for your kind comments. Mike Swain
Great production for 16mm. We just moved here summer of 2020, couldn't be happier.
So cool to watch!
My mom moved us to Venice in 1974, I believe. (I was in the middle of 5th grade.) Later, we ended up in Nokomis where she bought property.
My dad's sister married Robert (Bob) Blackburn. They built a house on his share of land near North Port. And my dad and stepmother lived in South Venice for many years.
I sure miss the way the area was when I was growing up.
This is just wonderful, thank you for posting it. It is great to hear the voices of the people who lived here in the earlier years, who are long gone now.
Thanks for sharing the film Mike. I’m a descendent of Jessie and Rebecca Knight as well as the Currys. It’s nice to see some history of such a great city.-Keith
Wow, this is cool!! I moved here in 1978, VHS class of '82.....Venice has changed sooo much since then.
I know some of those old voices.. long gone.
Grew up in Venice from 1953 thru 1962...back when it was quite and a cheap place to live and enjoy, sadly that is not the case in 2023 but those of us who grew up there still have the great memories...
I was the guy driving the old Buick and that was my 1914 Model T Ford.....Bill Storms
Wow!!! This is so awesome!!! Thank you for sharing!!! VHS Class of '76 😁
I love this!! Just seeing venice way back when it was just being built Is really incredible
Thanks Mike for posting this!
Proud to say Venice has been my hometown of 52 years! Nice film - thanks but unfortunately now it is growing too fast!
I think more apartments will be great in Highlands. A great place to live minus a few issues. Would be crushed if it were to crumble.
Changed so much, Sucks Venice is now ruined by all the new homes being built
thanks for this video. i was listening to a song by The Doors named Peace Frog and in the song it says "blood stains the palm trees of Venice", indicating that maybe Indian blood? im no expert. I'm surprised this video only has 3 comments. Is there truth to this Indian blood spill in Venice? Around what time frame? thanks.... Venice CA that is.. i think... I'm not too sure which Venice
Jim Morrison was probably talking about Venice Beach California since that is where he lived.

Very good, but who hunts skunks
The title should say Venice, Florida. I watched for a few minutes before I realized it was not the Venice by le in California. Lol
This is not the real Venice of California 90291...!!! West Side !
I have been to Venice, CA and Venice, FL. We chose to move to Venice, FL and would pick Venice, FL over the California version every time. Both are great, this Venice is spectacular!
