    MDF is fine, used in high end cabinetry and millwork all the time. It's a stable and flat substrate that paints beautifully, especially with a spray gun. However, make sure you use real wood edging, and or veneer edge banding for shelving, exposed edges. as MDF sucks up paint leaving an undesirable edge and MDF is not durable enough to last any period of time for furniture. Also, when you're using wood filler don't scrape it all up as he did, wood filler is either water based or solvent based so it shrinks when it dries leaving holes still exposed. Leave a bit and sand smooth.

    Firstly the best way to prime MDF is to use pre primed MDO instead. Also when applying wood filler using a razor blade is superior. Also bondo makes a great wood filler for paint grade projects.

    So when I started painting our cabinets I asked if I can use water based paint to prime it and use oil based on top or vice versa. I was told to use oil over water as a guide. Now I have some raw MDF material that I would like to paint but according to this video you used an oil based then water based. So what’s a good rule to use wether a paint will stick to the other or not. Thanks.

    1) sand the mdf to a beautiful finish
    2) get your paint mixed and ready to go
    3) throw the project in the burn pile and start over with hardwood plywood or make panels out of real wood.

    • @lifeofabachelor8547
      @lifeofabachelor8547 6 лет назад +3

      sand in between to give the water based paint something to attach to

    • @charleshetrick3152
      @charleshetrick3152 6 лет назад +1

      The rules have not changed, though primers are more forgiving in this regard than top coats. Alcohol based primer would be a superior choice for the MDF and assuming you wanted to use a water based top coat.

    • @drakeorion94
      @drakeorion94 6 лет назад +4

      when it comes to primers you can use any water based paint over any primer. BIN is a great sealer

    • @briancnc
      @briancnc 6 лет назад +2

      You can, just not with exposed edges or trim made out of MDF. MDF is a sheet good substrate meaning you have to band the edges. It's cheap but so is wood, this was just lazy.

    • @drakeorion94
      @drakeorion94 6 лет назад +5

      MDF takes paint better then wood does. Once it's sealed it will last.

    🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 u having a joke and enjoy 😂😂😂
    Mdf is the best finish gloss Result
    But you have to give lots of work
    first you have to sanding all over for ready to paint
    Applying sealers first sanding when dry
    Repeat second coat
    After finish sand the second coat
    Applying your primmer wait for dry then sanding ,now you apply your base coat colour you want,,when is dry sanding
    Now you go with your clear coat lacquer
    That the best way mdf work follows that step

  • @Homepros888

    MDF is the worst material they ever made. It's basically good for nothing.

    • @briancnc
      @briancnc 6 лет назад +1

      It has its place in casework, it just has to be used in moderation. You wouldn't use plywood for something like paint grade raised panels, you would use higher grades like ranger board MDF that paints like real wood. Using solid wood panels is labor intensive, full of defects to mend and adds no value to a paint grade project.

    • @nakulah

      Mama C idk where you live but in Canada OSB is pretty good stuff, uses 100% of the tree whereas plywood I think is like 60%. There’s buildings on my property with 20 year old osb that is still perfectly intact. Just need to invest in quality primer and that goes for mdf aswell, I agree it’s not as appealing but when it’s literally half the cost of 1/2” plywood sometimes it’s the way to go

    • @nakulah
      @nakulah 6 лет назад

      MDF is great for indoor speaker box projects, esp inner bracing & porting (like on a t-line, where you'll use a ton of material). The density is ideal for tight sound.
