$5 is a steal for an incomplete comic from the 40's, would much rather have that over a modern book at the same price.

I think I'm echoing a lot of other comments here in saying $5 for that Captain Marvel, is a superb buy, even incomplete. The fact that it brings you so much joy makes it priceless :)
I think your other great buy is the copy of Coup for $4. A steal! As an avid boardgamer myself, I often look for used games at thrift stores for myself or for friends as you can often find them for far below retail.

You definitely got a fantastic deal on that Captain Marvel book. That's such an awesome cover. I remember growing up in the 80s, and even then nuclear war was on everyone's minds. I really dig J. Scott Campbell's work, but I agree that his good girl covers can tend to be cartoonish. I didn't catch the price, but I was eyeing that Twilight Zone book at the first stop. 🤣🤣

I hadn't realised that Dan Slott has been with Marvel that long.
Good rule, pick it up if it's something you've never seen before (and reasonably priced of course).
For a similarly themed but very different response to nuclear conflict and its aftermath, I highly recommend Ray Bradbury's short story "There Shall Come Soft Rains" and Wally Wood's beautiful and touching EC adaptation.
Yeah, definitely buy anything Golden Age at that price regardless of what it's missing. People buy and sell single pages of key comics like ASM #1 and Amazing Fantasy #15, you get at least 2/3 of the Captain Marvel comic and it fits right in with your interests in history and social history too.

SHAZAM! I'm a huge fan of the orignal Billy Batson/CM. I actually had a few Golden Age CM too. I had that issue but mine was like a 9.6. This was like 1993/94 I think I paid like $250 for it was Bedrock Comic in Texas. I also had I think WHIZ Comics #25? The iconic classic cover. With Billy standing next to CM. It was mint! I think I paid $300 or $325 for that one. Great pick up I figured you paid $20 for it. Even if it's in pretty bad condition. Congrads!

    Good evening Michael
What a buy for such a comic, sad that it incomplete, but a contender to be slabbed to conserve the poor thing? It is interesting that it is such an early Atomic Age story, Otto Binder was of course a novelist as well as Comic writer, as was Edmond Hamilton, I guess it was a fine way to pay the bills, but he did like to pursue the Science Fiction concepts! I guess the atomic age will always be with us, that terrifying image of the Mushroom cloud will be always there to haunt our dreams . And of course the Atomic Age introduced so much to comics.
Sadly we never did get the atomic rocket ship to make it to the stars.
time to blast off, Al The Goldkeyfourcolorkidownunda

How do you like the Storm Cover better than the Jean cover? Campbell's Storm is drawn far better than that Storm on the MARVEL COMICS 1000 cover. Subjective, I guess. But that Storm cover looks far cartoonier than the Jean cover, anatomically speaking. You must have a subconscious issue with Campbell, rather biased perhaps? No way that Storm cover doesn't look "cartoonier" than the Jean cover.

I mean you just said it, what people like is subjective, especially in regards to art.
