🍿 Black Mirror | Mazey Day
🎬 In the fourth episode of Charlie Brooker's revived series, a hit-and-run incident leads to a thorough chase by the Paparazzi. Zazie Beetz stars as an investigator into a missing starlet, which becomes quite the trek into the unknown. But is it for better or worse?

@@awakentruth47The past 5 seasons of Black Mirror episodes were about new tech and the possibilities in which they affect individuals and society as a whole.
This episode had no new tech. All it is is a grown up version of Goosebumps. It started off well with delving into the paparazzi theme but it eventually went nowhere thought-provoking. Ended with a cliche'd stereotype of the paparazzis taken to the extreme. Might as well be in an American Horror Stories show.

Charlie broker had mentioned that he debated a ton about making this a “red mirror” episode. And if he had done that I think it would be better. If they made a spin-off called “red mirror” and put mazey day and demon 79 in it. I think then the episodes would had have more praise because both are unrelated to technology and instead about society.

My analysis of BM is that it’s more about what can happen with technology when it’s put in the wrong hands (for example, thinking of Black Museum with Rolo Haynes & Nish- Rolo used his technology for evil, Nish repurposed it to seek Justice/vengeance). With this episode (werewolf plotline aside??), I’d argue the technology is the camera & we’re seeing the lengths to which people will go for a quick buck

  • @andrewoshawott1611

I really disliked the werewolf twist of this episode. It just didn't feel like Black Mirror to me, everything about BM relates to technology and is grounded in (probable) realism. I tried looking back at previous episodes to see which had supernatural aspects, and I couldn't find any (the closest I guess was Be Right Back, but that was definitely AI), so the twist was definitely out of left field.

I think a large fan base of the black mirror bandwagon has correlated the show with just super advanced technology and it’s negative effects on humanity. The show isn’t just about futuristic technology lol. Never has been, it’s about the way humans behave and react to every day complex problems that affect us all collectively. Technology is just an add-on to these problems we face. Being a paparazzi is also using technology. (Cameras) it depicts how we as humans have utilized an amazing invention to capitalize off each other for profits without taking into consideration the feelings of those we record without consent. Just because they didn’t use edgy year 4,000 technology doesnt mean it’s any less good or “black mirror-like” lol.

I honestly think this show is largely ditching the technology angle and going the route of just become a sci-fi and horror anthologies. It's a lot easier to do that and easier to appease a larger audience that way. The fans that loved the show for what it used to be will fall off and more casual fans and general audience will enjoy it
Hell, I love the first two seasons of BM and haven't been that pleased with it sense, but I enjoyed this season the most since it's made its way to Netflix. While I thought the werewolf thing was initially out of place, I interpreted it as a means to making a much bigger point. To me, it showed that no matter how much danger this photogs were in, their drive for a huge story and a massive payday still had a stronger influence over a sense of self-preservation.
And although the female photog initially acted more practically, and with compassion to actually try to help Mazey escape before she realized what the situation was, she still ultimately ended up letting the lure of a huge payday influence her choices at the end.
The supernatural element does throw you for a loop, but the Black Mirror- style commentary is still there.

It's quite reductive to say paparazzi = bad is the takeaway here. Our inherent need to disrespect privacy and engage in gossip is why paparazzi exist in the first place - to supply our demand for it.
I agree with everyone's criticisms about the werewolf twist have been discussed already, but I'd have to disagree with the interpretation of Beetz' character having a regression at the end.
One aspect is money, she needs money for her rent (though if this was the focus they should've showed her financially struggling more). Another is the logical aspect - she needed Mazey to shoot herself and get evidence of it otherwise she would've ended up looking guilty.
I feel like the end was more of a commentary of the toxic cycle of working in morally dubious businesses like the paparazzi. Bo clearly wants to escape the business but finds herself drawn back to it no matter what.

I wouldn't mind it if it were explained in any way at all, but the way it was dropped with zero explanation just leaves me with a bunch of questions. It seems people in Hollywood know about the existence of werewolves but are keeping it a secret for some reason? If Mazey became a werewolf does it mean people from the diner are gonna become werewolves? Why did Mazey take the photo at the end? It seemed like she took a photo right at the same instant, so that both "shoot"s coincide. But you can't even publish a photo like that and she had a ton of other photos, she was already gonna become rich and famous for her pics and story. I dunno it just was not satisfying.

So before i even dare to watch this one, that seems to have the worst ratings of all, i took the comment of somebody else in some review, and watched the "so hated Miley Cyrus episode". And i must say, i liked that one more than 6e02 and 6e03 at least, was for me more on line with 6e01.
But guess for me is "dark" not so important than a story that makes sense, that has maybe a dark underlying twist, but can also be funny here and there. And the most important of course, that there is the main theme of Dark Mirror about bad things that may result out of modern technolgy, and that was totally missing at least in 6e02.
I meanwhile learned that it is maybe about fans of "true crime show", that i'm however have zero interest in, and that in the end also don't really have much to do with modern tech.
Now, i already read somewhere, that this episode also has not much of that in it, so should i sit still through it (yeah, of course i will and then regret it) or should i directly skip to the last episode, that is my last hope now ?
Also in this case i really hate to say that i was again proven right with my dislike of anthology stuff which started with "Fargo".

The least black-mirrory of all Black Mirror episodes. In any case she should have killed a man as a wolf, not high.

Woah woah woah…… you’re from England?????? How??? For how long???? Haha. But yeah I also thought this was tacked on. If memory serves black mirror has never done anything supernatural and then this happens??? Why???? It also came out of nowhere. Like I’d get it if she was attacked earlier or kept attacking people and blacked out but NOPE she’s just a werewolf and we have to just accept it.
