Construction of the Bhore Ghat Railways on GIPR Bombay. No JCB. No earth moving equipment. No trucks and dumpers in those days. No DG Sets or electricity in the Hilly terrains. Still they stood the test of time........ And only until........

Plus no drones etc, because these days most of the surveying is done through aerial views provided by drones, which makes planning much easier.

It was the most challenging civil engineering task in the world if you consider gradient/slope of rail road. Many engineers/workers used to get infected by Malaria during rainy season.

Great job looking at the technology available that time .! In April 2020 ,after 170 years , the same bridge popularly known as Amrutanjan Bridge , which was still standing tall , bought down by controlled explosion , to make way for road widening .

Britain became rich because of cotton mills from Bombay in 19th century. Cotton is produced in other parts of Maharashtra state like vidarbha, solapur. Bombay mills need large amount of cotton. Transpoting large quantity of cotton via railway line was the only option. Main obstacle was sahyadri ghat section. Kasara ghat and khandala ghat were constructed for british profit only

Bombay boomed on cotton in the 1860s, because the US civil war stopped cotton supply through slave labour. Bombay became the main cotton supplier of the world.
