Nice vdo. Appreciate. Being a mumbaikar and punekar I love travelling through this patch. This is one of the good things that britishers gave us. We should be thankful to them. Administration was not corrupt like today in those days, hence such difficult projects were delivered that without much of technology.
Yes. It’s a scenic route. Try travelling in the vistadome coach during the rains, especially once the landscape has turned green during the later weeks of July till mid September. 😇
The Britishers really gave us this brilliant rail route from Mumbai to the western ghats traversing through some of the most picturesque and wonderful scenery.
@@trainsandjourneys moreover they ensured that the ecosystem balance of this area doesn't get disturbed. These days they don't take into consideration this aspect while exploring these areas for development.
The Bhor ghat between Karjat and Lonavala is really a marvelous feat achieved by the Indian Railways in the 19th century. Nice video and good coverage. 👍
Nowadays people are switching back to trains as there is frequent traffic jam in the expressway. Moreover there is a proposal to start a Vande Bharat connecting the two cities in 2 hour 30 minutes. If it becomes a reality then train route will be the preferred choice for travelers in this route😇
Good video,Technical terms explained in simple language 4 viewers.Keep it up.I hve travelled more than 200 times on this route never missed the trip between Karjat to Lonavala specially by Mumbai --Hyderabad Express.SAN--24/3/2022.
Nicely done video with only pertinent information giving more importance to the outside scenery and the heartwarming natural sounds of the train motion. Though the British exploited us, they gave two great gifts we will cherish and enjoy. One is the English language and the second the Railway. As a kid in the 1950s to date, the train journey in India or elsewhere is an exciting and wonderful experience. Going through the tunnels is a wonder in itself.
I've travelled this section about seven - eight times between 2005-2012 ... every time I enjoyed the lovely view's of Mighty Sahyadri's🙏..... The land of Mahaveer Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🐚🔔🥥🪔
The joy of Ghat section has been vanished while travelling by road after construction of Express way . But will never end in rail journey that's why I always prefer railways to travel between pune -Mumbai to enjoy this beautiful ghat section.
True. Journey by train will always remain special. The road route although took a lot of people away from the train, is slowly losing people back to trains, as the road route has frequent traffic jam from Khalapur to Lonavala patch of Expressway & also the ever increasing Mumbai traffic. I used to travel a lot by bus between Mumbai & Pune, but now shifted back to trains as they are dependable and maintains a timetable😇
Very nice and informative video on a railway journey ! When we say about the marvel of the railway engineering, I should mention about the Lumding -Silchar Railway line construction through the tuff Borail Hills which was the historical saga of the British Engineering. The line at present has been converted to BG line. The conversion of the same railway line from MG to BG is also the marvel of the most advanced Indian Railway Engineering ! The journey through this hill section railway line is more thrilling and fascinating ! You can have the experience of the journey. Thanks !
Very good video, keep it up. Especially the captions and explanations were excellent. I love to watch these train videos and probably this was one of the best.
Did you know once upon a time when the Bhor Ghat was constructed 1856 it was not a straight track from Karjat to Lonawala. There was one 'Z' reversal at one stretch. Later by 1930 tracks were relaid so trains can run without reversing and with introduction of 1400 V DC electric overhead traction and introduction of new train the Deccan Queen with first electric locomotive right from its first run.
Thank for the info Sir. That was indeed informative. From further article I could find out that the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and old highway pass through the same reversal station. The khandala tunnel used by the Expressway was earlier a railway tunnel, which was decommissioned after the reversal if trains ended and trains started going straight from Monkey hill towards Khandala.😇🙏🏻
Nice video. Could you please clarify on how the banker locomotives return from Lonavala to Karjat or Kalyan after they have done their job of pushing the trains thru Bor Ghats.
Thank you 😇 Yes, some of the banker engines (double or triple engines together) come the ghat as a single set. However, whenever there is a heavy train coming down the ghats like a 24 coach passenger train or a goods train, then the banker engines are attached in the front of the train, whereby they give an additional braking power to the entire train behind.
I always feel that since every train going to pune ,needs bankers till lonavala and these bankers have to come back to karjat, the railways should keep a coach or two permanently attached to the banker locos and then sell the tickets as unreserved seats . this will prevent the travellers and others from climbing inside reserved long distance trains and causing disturbance, also this way, many can take a local train till karjat, then use these coaches till lonavala and then locals towards pune and similarly , people can use locals till lonavala, use the coaches with bankers back to karjat and then go via local towards mumbai as needed. this will remove the traffic from the expressway and old highway especially in the critical ghat areas. also remove or reduce people from entering reserved coaches of other long distance trains . what do you all think ????
Wow. That is some creative thinking. I would certainly support this idea. I have personally faced this issue, that there not much unreserved options between Mumbai & Pune train section complete due to this gap between Lonavala & Karjat which does not have local train. Considering the present scenario, your idea has some good potential especially since Expressway is not at all dependable at times. There are sudden traffic jams which occur post Khalapur toll till Lonavala exit, which might delay the journey by 2 hours sometimes. With the idea which you have proposed, there will be round the clock connectivity between Karjat & Lonavala. Hence, one need not plan to board jam packed long distance train unreserved coaches or travel in reserved ticket. Great idea 👍🏻👌🏻😇
Thanks, Prathyash, for your efforts,& information shared!! Bor Ghat reached Lonavala, in 1856!! What a splendid work, our ancestors did!! The track after monkey point, can be seen with 'rails within rail'!! Is it a 'Safety precaution' to arrest sliding? What is the purpose of this 'double rail'?
Thanks for your warm words Sir😇🙏🏻 The tracks within the rails are safety rails. They are meant to prevent trains from running off track & overturn in case of a derailment. These rails are usually installed over bridges and places where the severity of a derailment will be high. In the Bhor ghats, inorder to prevent a train from running downhill uncontrollably due to brake failure, there are these 3 technical halts where the trains have to stop for 2 minutes mandatorily. There are 'Catch-Sidings' beyond these halts inorder to halt the runaway trains. If you notice at 06:03 minute in the video, you can see a catch siding. Here the default track is set to the catch siding, and only after the mandatory 2 minute halt the track is set downhill.😊

2:15 The gradients are marked along the tracks as 37 with a down arrow. Normally these marker stones are on the left side of the tracks. But you can see one at 11:20 as 39 (Down arrow) on right side of the train
These 37 with down arrow indicates a co tangent (as known in trigonometry) of the angle of the downward slope as compared to level ground. It also means the track comes down by one feet for going forward of every 37 feet. similarly when the train comes towards Lonavala, these markers indicate 37 with up arrow. This means the train goes up by one feet while moving ahead by thirty seven feet.
Many documents show the number of tunnels to be 28 while some show around 18. There are lines between Karjat and Lonavala, which are technically 3 single lines, which means trains can be routed in both directions through any of these 3 lines. The number of tunnels are different in all 3 lines as their alignments are different along the way. And secondly some of the tunnels do have a vertical opening and hence some consider them as end of the tunnel while others consider it as a single tunnel.
at the start, if you noticed the bankers for the Mumbai Hyderabad express, only the last Banker was working, rest were silent with their pantos lowered.
Keen observation. Yes, only the last banker was have the humming sound while the first two were silent. However, even if all the locos were working, only one pantograph needs to be used. This is done through 'Multiple Unit' ir MUfication of the locos. In this process, power is taken from the Overhead wire by only one pantograph, and power is distributed to the remaining Locos via cables. If you observe carefully in the video, there are cables connecting banker locos near the face of loco. 😇
Nice video ,good presentation, you could have changed the camera angle by taking photos from left and right, instead of only capturing the scenic beauty from only one side, you could have also show your subscribers, the view of khopoli town from the train. All the best for your future video's.
Also known as Bor ghat. The British mainly had issues with Indian names and that's how we find variations in names. Presently it is known as Bhor Ghats officially. Thanks for update😇
Very dirty tracks! Too much waste thrown from the train! Passengers should be educated and announced on the speakers not to throw waste outside! The illegal vendors inside the train should be banned first!
As per Indian Railways this place is Bhor Ghat. Hence the title is also kept as Bhor Ghat. In Maharashtra there are many places with the same names. Let's say 'Khandala'. There is one near Lonavala and one Satara. In both places the names have variations. Likewise, we cannot pin-point a location and say this is the actual name, like in this case😇
