Making a Hunting knife from an Old File

  • And another one !
I made a simple knife from a file again, and i absolutely love how it turned out (which is rare !!). The way i did the mirror polish worked much better than any other time, because i tried new techniques.
After the bevel grind, I switched from the belt grinder to a variable speed angle grinder with higher and higher grits, and then polishing compound. MUCH more efficient and way better result !
I like making knives from files because the heat treatment is very simple, and it’s easy to maintain a high rockwell hardness. It is absolutely razor sharp as you can see !
The handle is blue stabilized wood (i should know the name, but i don’t) with brass pins.

Nicely done. I have a 16" rasp that I plan on turning into a Walking Dead bowie.

Just give it a go ! Files and rasps are easy to find, and very cheap. There's a lot you can do with them ! just don't forget to anneal it before working on it, otherwise... good luck !!!

Cncest, i think i paid 120 euros for this one. This website had bad reviews but i decided to give a try considering it was much cheaper than anywhere else. It doesn't hold strong enough for machining though ! thank you :)

Tres joli resultat bravo.
