3:25 The pictures and recordings being in black and white back then are mainly from rationing and shortages. During WW2 almost all of the color cameras were being sent to the military and after the war it was very expensive to actually get a color camera. That's why you see a film like "The Wizard of Oz", which was made in the mid-30's be in color while "Casablanca" and "A Bridge Too Far" which were made during and after WW2 respectively are in black and white.

I thought Wizard was colorized later.
Still, makes sense. Also, for thw prices we're talking about, it's probably better to get larger film in b&w.

I grew up in the 1960s. In those days, the majority of television was in black and white, until maybe 68. Color tv cameras and televisions were expensive. Movie and photographic film were both several times more expensive than black and white film. Surprisingly, the 50s and 60s were in UHDR, those rarely photographed or filmed to modern standards.

“Aren’t those two things (Combined Arms Warfare and Blitzkreig) completely different?”
    No, no they are not.
What we call Blitzkreig is standard combined-arms warfare.
The term ‘Blitzkreig’ was invented by the British Propaganda Office to help sell the exaggerated depiction of just how badly Poland and later France were doing against the Germans. because if the Germans seemed unstoppable, it would give the British public more incentive to join the army to try and fight them.
The term Blitzkreig was almost never used by the Germans themselves, with High Command deriding the term and calling it stupid. It’s possible some did, but it’s hard to be certain.

      @markbowerii7632 6 месяцев назад

Also, did you know that the war tactics we now know as blitz krieg was actually invented by a British tank commander named sir Percy "Hobo" Hobart? Fat electrician has a video on him, Erwin Rommel and Heinz Guderian were paying very close attention to the same tactics Hobart's contemporaries refused to give the time of day, so much so that when the conflict began, only the tankers he trained personally were able to withstand the German blitz krieg.

Colour photography was around quite some time before ww1 but Colour filming was a diferent mater especially if you wanted to transport it. WW1 film footage is digitally coloured. In WW2 portable Colour film cameras where a thing but stil, quite expesive.
Blitzkrieg is a facet of combined arms concentrating troops and moving fast. But the concept comes from as far back as the romans. So Blitzkrieg is not a new concept but the exact details of the plans where a bit diferent

Pictures back in the day weren't black in white for that reason it was due to it being cheaper than color.

Re: weebs and tanks. There is a fanfiction I started reading recently that was written by a marine tanker about the US Marines working with the JSDF in the anime, Gate. It's called "Here We Go Again" if you're interested. As of chapter 8, it's pretty good.

3:42 I find that idea a bit silly. And it has a rational explanation.
Textbooks often take pictures from newspapers. Newspapers only printed in black and white, because it was cheaper. Also, early colorized film LOOKED TERRIBLE.
I’d you were picking photos of historic events. Would you pick a colorized version that looked awful, or a black and white version that looks really nice and crisp?

There was a British guy that was wounded several times over the first world war and I believe his response after the war being asked about his experience he said he frankly enjoyed the war. So some crazy guys did have fun but not the usual people. 😅

as a history nerd: WW I started because Austria-Hungary was to slow to attack Serbia in 1914. They took 4 weeks to attack Serbia in 1914. If they had attacked right after the assassination no major power would have objected that. Buzt after 4 weeks the attack triggered all the alliances that were in place. Sure we might have had another reason for a WW I but not in 1914. i recommend Extra history: the seminal catastrophe.

Yeah, it being a catalyst is why he says "so begins a long depressing explanation of early 20th century politics"; because you have to give one to explain why and how the assassination led to a World War.

I don't think there was as much worry about the engine technology (Gas Generator go BRRRR) but rather all electronic systems, and mechanical systems they use along with the way it's armored internally to prevent spalling. These were and still are top secret things. It's not so much they're worried their enemies will capture the tank and use it, as much as they'll capture it and ship it off to China or Russia for reverse engineering and then China or Russia is able to catch up significantly by just copying what the Americans do.

So not sure how long the Somme lasted, but I'm just gonna say, Verdun lasted nearly an entire year. Imagine, you're an allied soldier in the trenches of Verdun and you've been taking shelling from Germany for over 6 months. The stench of the battlefield, the noise of the shelling, the trenches flooded by rain and blood, the horrific sights you might see. WWI was far more horrific than WWII imo.

The German field gun corps was a very elite unit and absolutely LOVED the opportunity to fire at tanks. They didn't see death on tracks approaching. They saw a soft metal box full of fuel and ammo to blow up with their 77mm field guns.
