Hi Janet, thanks so much for the kind words - I'm really glad you enjoyed it! If you like, check out some of my newer reviews, which hopefully have improved since this one! All the best, Sam :)
Currently got the Railroad one, and it’s a little tattered as I was young when I had it and a managed to break the smoke deflector off, followed by supergluing it back on directly to the smoke box 😂. Tornado is undoubtedly my favourite engine (First one i ever saw IRL) and I think a BR livery one is ideal for my layout. Just a shame that the loco is hard to come by if you don’t want the whole set
Hi Sam, incredible video. In fact out of all of the Hornby youtuber’s I have watched, you are definitely the best, you have inspired me to start my own Hornby collection. Just wondering do you have any tips or best places to start and best places to get Hornby models.
Thanks very much mate - that's really kind of you to say! The best advice is to shop around - check different sites and see if you can find the best price - Hatton's or Rails of Sheffield are great places to start! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I love watching long rakes in model form. Beautiful locos. I believe the number on the smokebox door is the shed number....where the loco is stationed. Cheers again Sam. Great job as always.
Another great video, just a quick question, were those trains both based on the model just later and earlier versions or did Hornby make a big mistake and give them the same number. Thanks
+David's Model Trains Thanks very much for the comment - Tornado in real life has been painted into many different liveries, and Hornby have produced her in many of them. All I did here was to show to different versions of the same locomotive, so they had the same number but for that reason! Cheers, Sam
Sam'sTrains Okay, I thought that was the case, just wanted to check. Would you mind giving me a few tips about how to become a Hornby RUclipsr. Thanks David.
Sam'sTrains Well at the moment I have 2 DC trains, hoping to get a lot more and digital, as I have just got back into Hornby. I would like to make an account similar to yours and wondering what kind of videos work best when starting up. Thanks, David
+David's Model Trains Okay - that sounds cool! The videos that work best are either the 'how to' style videos - maybe if your building a layout, that might be a nice thing to film? Otherwise, very popular locomotives always do very well - like the A4 or Flying Scotsman :) Cheers, Sam
I really enjoyed your review, so much so that I bought loco as part of the Tornado Pullman train set from Argos for £99.99. I am very impressed by the amount of detail, mine even had glazed windows. Thanks Al.
+AlanRochester57 Really glad you enjoyed the review - and fantastic news about that train set for £99.99 - what a bargain! And glazed windows too - lucky so and so ;) Sounds great anyway, a brilliant find! Cheers, Sam :)
Thank you SO MUCH for this video. i really like tornado, and your reveiws. you do an absolutley splendid job on the reveiws on your channel. keep it up!
+chilledgamer Thanks very much for your kind words - glad you're enjoying what I'm doing - anything else you want to see, just let me know! Cheers, Sam :D
My tornado can pull 35 carriages at half speed and can do more but i ran out spaces. Hoping to extend my shed to allow more track laying. Excellent review of this train.
Good review Sam, let's hope Hornby keep supplying good quality motors. It looks like the fly wheel idea is good, both for performance and extra adhesion, especially without tender pick ups. Regards, Cliff.
+janiceandcliff Thanks Cliff - It'd be great if they kept supplying these motors, yeah :( The fly wheel is great actually - It allows you to run smoothly on any form of DC without stuttering or struggling! Cheers, Sam
Sam just bought a 2nd hand tornado arrived today runs ok but she will not stay on the track she seems to ride low on back and high in front looks like her 6 main wheels don't fit the track well any ideas Sam
@@SamsTrains yes sam they are out if kilter I have told the seller and he asked me to return either for repair or refund I think an issue like this is a big problem and may be an issue in the future thanks for reply sam any new videos due brian in Ireland
awesome and models that could accompany this from Hornby Group are Corgi OO Jaguar XK & Vincent Black Shadow since it was on Top Gear series 13 episode 1
Hi Sam, have you had any pony truck de railings issues? Like you I bought the same BR green version, ex set and mine keeps de railing on both pony trucks. I have seen other videos on here of people saying there is too much play on the rear pony truck wheels due to the too deep a slot in the chassis for the axle. The video showed a bit of paper clip being cut and fitted just below the pony truck axle and the retaining plate being re fitted. Have you heard of this issue please.
Hey Mike - the pony shouldn't actually be doing much - and the pony wheels aren't designed to stay on the track. Is the loco itself derailing? Obviously it shouldn't be doing that. If there's some sort of fault and the pony wheels are sitting too low, it will derail! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks Sam, if the front pony derails sometimes the driving wheels do too, this is running it in, light engine, nothing couples to the loco other than the tender. This loco is ex set and a return that has been resold cheap.
Great video Sam. So fantastic to watch high speed express trains clattering along the rails. Are you using 3rd and 4th radii for the curved sections on your layout? That would minimise/prevent any derailments! Haha. Cheers, Pete.
Hi mate, yes it's relatively easy to maintain, but the trouble is they tend to need quite regular maintenance; they only have loco pick-ups, and so those six end up doing all the work, and they get dirty faster! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi! It's me again! (And it's a great video review, again!) Between the 🚂 Railroad A1 Doncaster you've reviewed on another video and this 🚂 Railroad Tornado... any thoughts? They're both offered in a starter set costing about the same, just the locos are different. So I'm wondering which you would go for and why? Again, thanks for the great work and this marvellous source of good info! 👏
Hmmm... I'd personally go for the Gresley one (like the Scotsman and the Doncaster), because they have tender pick-ups - the Tornados don't! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great! Yeah, I thought I had read that about the tender having pick-ups on the Gresley but you've just confirmed it. Plus, aesthetically I find it a bit more pleasing. Thanks a million for your help! 👏😁
Hi Sam, nice running session/review. I have said this before, but we do seem to have the same taste in locos, I have the blue and green Tornado's. I installed a LokSound decoder in the green, the blue is Hornby's TTS version. The Tornado is one of my favourite styles...Simon
+Liverton -Simon I think we must certainly have the same taste - I wouldn't mind trying another TTS loco, but I might choose something that I don't already have when I do! :) Thanks for your comment, Cheers, Sam
Sam'sTrains Many years ago, I went to a large exhibition of Dapol in Wales, they had many rooms full, videoed it, watched it recently. Wish I could figure out, how to get it on here, from a DVD I have, as I only use an iPad. I will subscribe to you. Can I ask, do you think this one is better than the Flying Scotsman? I am also thinking of getting the Flying Scotsman. All the best.
Hi Sam! I'm about to buy this model so thanks for the review! I wasn't sure if I should do as my Railroad A1 Scotsman was a bit jerky at slow speeds, now I know it's just my model and not the range of similar ones. Better go get it fixed! Thanks - Someone you helped...
Hey! My pleasure mate, hope you enjoy it! Hope you get your Scotsman fixed too, fingers crossed there's nothing seriously wrong! ;D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Do you work for Hornby?. You certainly showed what Hornby does best, And that is in the fast British 4-6-2 's , a good model and it deserves this praise. YOU give us the best chance of what we should buy next. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND DEDICATION TO THIS HOBBY.
NGood work with the review, Sam. Great shots, too. She really is a lovely piece with nice detail. I'd be tempted to add some glazing myself. Agreed..the motion looks fantastic when she's running. The Railways blue edition really looks the part. Great runners, both...and that's some real pulling power. I'd like to see a clip of a pulling test....lol :)
+Tom jenssen Thanks Tom, I do love the Tornado too, especially that blue one! I'll film a pulling test at some point before Christmas so that you can see what she's capable of - I'd be interested to know myself! :) Cheers, Sam :)
I got that in a hornby Pullman express set. It was my first ever hornby loco. However mine came new without the side deflectors so I had to fork out £11 for new ones! 🤭🤬😡
what a good video and the real tornado spent a month at svr. it was nice seeing her every time i went down and she is mighty just like your model. great video
saw one of these in my local antique shop if its still there after christmas I may treat myself to it p.s its also in apple green my favourite L.N.E.R colour

The tender on Tornado was modified, It was just like a normal A2 tender on the originals.
I love this shot with the green engine going fast!
13:39 - 13:55
May I say that I think this is the best model review on RUclips and is a perfectly compiled video, loved it and thank you so much! 😊

Yeah she was built from scratch - very impressive really! :D

What radius curves will it handle? I love the loco. Very nice vid, Sam.
+atari67 I expect it would be 3rd radius officially, but they're fine on 2nd radius as long as she's not going too fast!

does the flying Scotsman have the same loco driven to mallard and tornado
Hi Mark, no it doesn't - I think they're all quite different in their mechanisms!
All the best,

I have a question. Where is Tornado's whistle?
Because on the Trainz model (of course from wildnorwester's model) is behind the smoke deflectors.
That's a good question! I'm not too sure actually, without checking the model - is it not in the normal place then?

Yeah the Tornados are amazing from Hornby, one of their best - the wheels just have to be super clean on them, that's all!
