Honestly I think my modern A1 by Bachmann looks better and is worth a fair amount more than the older ones, picked mine up on ebay for $140USD best engine I have bought to date, UK or US, plus I added DCC sound and weight to the tender.
Got one of these in BR blue for £45 yesterday. Things like cab detail are great for the first 10 minutes after getting it out the box, then once it's running around you never notice it again - especially with modern locos with a permanent tender connection.

Great review, Sam! Love the Peppercorn A1's. I bought the A1 Aberdonian by Bachmann several months ago and it's awesome! Bachmann's price does seem drastically high, glad you didn't have to pay that much.

It’s about time Sam haha. A tempting product indeed, looks better than Hornby’s version but I’ve heard the Tornado model sometimes doesn’t run too well. I’ll be waiting for your review of the A2.
Hey Samstrains I’m looking for a British train to run on my switching layout and was wondering if you have any shunter recommendations. By the way I live in the USA so shipping/postage cost A LOT of money
Hmm... do you fancy steam or diesel? If steam, I can recommend the Hatton's locos - the Barclay and the P class - they're just superb! If diesel, the Bachmann 08 and 04 are very good! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The Bachmann A1 is a very good model. I almost bought one months ago, but there was an issue with the seller. Anyway, Hattons has the updated ones, which are quite expensive at over £160. If you wanted a Bachmann A1, get the older version, as it looks exactly the same as the new one. Alternatively, you could do what I did and bought the Bachmann A2. Both the A1 and A2 look quite similar, if not the same. I would recommend getting the A2 over the A1 because the A2 is far superior to both A1 models. The A2 has full pickups, diecast running board, lots of rivets, is extremely heavy, and has many modern features one would find on a very expensive locomotive; did I mention the A2 is also £40 cheaper than a brand new A1?. Each is to there own I suppose. I do wish I had an A1 (and I don't mean Tornado), but I'm quite happy with the A2.
Thanks Josh - ahh that's a shame! Blimey - so they really are the same? That's ludicrous! Thanks for the tips on the A2 - I'll look into those for sure! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam’s trains I am thinking about buying the hornby LNER class A3 pacific so I wanted to know if it would work in a American wall plug because it comes from the UK and they have a different amount of power from a wall plug It is a hornby R1039 Flying scotsman set . Thanks -Uriel
Hi Uriel - yes you can run British trains in the UK, but you'll want an American controller - or at least one that can use a power supply designed for 110v! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains would my set run in American 110v using an athearn controller DC and I’m paying 115 pounds (150) US dollars would it be two much ? Thanks. - Uriel
I have a modern one and the cab is the same, unpainted, its only the Bachmann Tornado that has a painted cab. Livery aplication is Very good and crisp. And performance is the same thing. Butt I payd 100 pounds for mine
such a superb crawl on the loco, and also an all round, fantastic review, Sam! by the way, are you thinking of getting the newly announced stirling single by locomotion when its released? I think would work great on slow speeds; also Emily would look great running beside it :)
Thanks Eddie - yeah she really is a good model actually! Sadly not - they've made sure you can't 'try before you buy' by making an early cut-off for pre-orders... so with a price tag like that, I will be avoiding it sadly :( Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam! Just letting you know, Rapido UK has an OO Scale Stirling Single and LNER J70, and remember my request for the Canadian Pacific Hudson? Just reminding you, but it is REALLY expensive, I think 300 pounds, cause the Canadian Price is $600, anywho, just telling you about my discoveries, Thanks a Bunch! Ethan
Thanks very much Ethan - yes I've seen those - but sadly they're way out of my price range - they do look lovely though! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Lewis - I think either Hornby or Bachmann are a good call - Bachmann is better for detail, but the Hornby ones are much cheaper, and they run just as well! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains I have no idea it seems really cool and cant see many reviews on it so i thought it might be a nice unique model to get, i have plans on starting a mini railway myself and i was thinking the d51 would be the first one ill get
9:44 I think the numberboard is moutned too high! It would look better between the handrail and the handle in the middle! 10:13 That is odd! I'm not used to seeing a peppercorn A1 without Southern-style headlamps! (but they did keep the top light on this version!
It's beautiful, I wish there had been more preserved and not just Tornado had been built. Wait, Barry Scrapyard is still around, right? I'll pack my bags
There were A5's but they started life as the GCR 9N's. There was also an A6, A7 and A8 but they were all just modified variants of the A5 I think. Either way, they suburban tank engines. Pacifics too.
Nice loco Sam. I think the apple green British Railways livery looks a lot better on the Peppercorn A1 imo. I’ve been planning to get a Hornby Tornado in that livery for ages. But I really hope it doesn’t blow my house away. lol. XD
Thomas Fun03 To be gramatically correct she is not a replica as there was not an A1 named Tornado originally built. Tornado is a new build of an extinct class :)
Sounds good to me Cole! If it's tender driven, then that price is about right. If it's loco driven - then you got a real bargain! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Wonder if Peppercorn was crushed when he heard they were all scapped. He must have been riveted watching them being built. He probably Tender-ed his resignation after they were cut up.
Was the odd one out hiding behind the pub? She looked like a 2P 4-4-0 of SDJR design. Correct me if I'm wrong; you didn't give me a proper look. I wish I'd had a good close-up at least. I hate it when I don't get a close-up of certain steamies. It frustrates me very much. But nice review overall.
The A1s really had a great design. Its hard to chose between the blue and green livery. I also think the smoke deflectors add to their charm.
Yeah I agree, very tricky to choose!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I like British steam saddle tanks like the pug or a panier tank
Sam why don't you do a race between a peppercorn A1 vs a Gresly A1 or A3 .
That sounds like a lot of fun -great idea!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
My favorite British locomotive. I have one , love it.🇬🇧
ooh great choice John - they are superb! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam’s trains I am thinking about buying the hornby LNER class A3 pacific so I wanted to know if it would work in a American wall plug because it comes from the UK and they have a different amount of power from a wall plug It is a hornby R1039 Flying scotsman set .
Thanks
-Uriel
Hi Uriel - yes you can run British trains in the UK, but you'll want an American controller - or at least one that can use a power supply designed for 110v!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains would my set run in American 110v using an athearn controller DC and I’m paying 115 pounds (150) US dollars would it be two much ?
Thanks. - Uriel
I love your vids and loved your Spencer review
Thanks so much mate - that's very kind of you! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Just say that thumbnail and already love it
Thanks mate - yeah this loco is very photogenic! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I always think of Allen from The British Railway Series whenever I see a Peppercorn A1 Pacific.
I have a modern one and the cab is the same, unpainted, its only the Bachmann Tornado that has a painted cab. Livery aplication is Very good and crisp. And performance is the same thing. Butt I payd 100 pounds for mine
Ahh that's very interesting - so the price is inexcusable then!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Absolutely Gorgeous!
Thanks a lot Paul - glad you thought so too! :3
Cheers,
Sam :)
such a superb crawl on the loco, and also an all round, fantastic review, Sam!
by the way, are you thinking of getting the newly announced stirling single by locomotion when its released? I think would work great on slow speeds; also Emily would look great running beside it :)
Thanks Eddie - yeah she really is a good model actually! Sadly not - they've made sure you can't 'try before you buy' by making an early cut-off for pre-orders... so with a price tag like that, I will be avoiding it sadly :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Beautiful loco mate eye catching indeed
Thanks a lot mate - really glad you liked her :3
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
0 dislikes. We must not tell any loco haters about this video. The record will be gone.
haha that's true - don't encourage the haters! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great review Sam, but for those prices, they aren't up to the standard that you'd expect....Thanks for your opinions ....Bob
Thanks Robert! Yeah I agree actually - though hopefully at least the paintwork will be better on later versions! No problem mate,
Cheers,
Sam :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam just been looking at my layout and locos what a1 would you recommend
Hi Lewis - I think either Hornby or Bachmann are a good call - Bachmann is better for detail, but the Hornby ones are much cheaper, and they run just as well!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains ok thankyou
Can you do a Canadian National Railway U1F?
That sounds awesome - I'll definitely take a look at those! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
You should try to obtain a rivarossi Dreyfuss Hudson, I would love to see your thoughts on another of America’s most famous streamlined engines
That would be fantastic - I will keep an eye out for one of those! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Will you ever consider geting a Kato D51 to review?
Ooh that sounds cool - is it any good? I'll definitely look it up! :D
Ahh do you think so? I'm no expert, so I'll take your word for that!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Very good! I like the tender fire some reason
Thanks Toad - I do too, very lovely!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I love the A1 sad the only one left isn't a original A1
Thanks a lot Liam - yeah it is a bit of a shame, but at least we have her full stop! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Peppercorn didn't take the A1 designation for his design as it was already available due to Gresley's A1's being converted to A3.
Ahh of course - I guess that makes sense! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great Video Sam And Happy Halloween That Engine Looks Awesome I Love Trains And Bachmann Trains Look Really Awesome And You Make Awesome Videos Friend
Happy Halloween mate, glad you liked it! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hi Sam nice vid I've got a question for you have you got a Bachmann catalogue because then you can do a paper to real life comparison
Thanks a lot Dreamer - no I don't have the catalogue, but maybe I should get one! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It's beautiful, I wish there had been more preserved and not just Tornado had been built.
Wait, Barry Scrapyard is still around, right?
I'll pack my bags
Yeah I agree - it's a shame that no more were saved :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
What is your favorite British Railway livery Sam
Ooh I really like BR Blue!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Looks really cool great vid Sam your the best
Thanks so much for the kind comment - that's very nice of you to say :3
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Amazing review Sam! :D
Thanks a lot Freddy! :D
Isn't Tornado a peppercorn A1?
Yes! :D
THX everyone
Yes
KDev28YT your welcome
Where there any A5s? And do you have bachmann henry?
Mr Mike
Hey Mr Mike - I'm not too sure about that - it's definitely possible! I don't have Bachmann Henry yet, but I am keeping an eye out! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains ok cool. Hope to see it soon.
Mr Mike
There were A5's but they started life as the GCR 9N's. There was also an A6, A7 and A8 but they were all just modified variants of the A5 I think. Either way, they suburban tank engines. Pacifics too.
KV_45690 ok thanks, are they still preserved?
Mr Mike
From what I've read, there weren't any preserved. Gradually withdrawn between 1943 and 1961.
Does you affiliate link work for you if I buy anything from hattons after following it or just what its pointing to?
Hi mate, thanks very much for your interest on that - only the link you click will be traced back to my channel!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
So if I use your link I can buy anything from hattons and you get credit for it?
Nice loco Sam. I think the apple green British Railways livery looks a lot better on the Peppercorn A1 imo. I’ve been planning to get a Hornby Tornado in that livery for ages. But I really hope it doesn’t blow my house away. lol. XD
Thanks a lot Ocean - ahh that's interesting, yeah I suppose it is a lovely livery! haha let's hope not - enjoy her! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Out of curiousity, have you watched Simon's British railway's series? (I'm watching this while traveling so I can only watch without sound lol)
I never have, it sounds great though! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
How interesting. I love it. By the way, Tornado a replica A1 locomotive
Thanks a lot - yes she was a replica, but very lovely don't you think?!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thomas Fun03 To be gramatically correct she is not a replica as there was not an A1 named Tornado originally built. Tornado is a new build of an extinct class :)
Just brought a 2p SDJR dark blue livery for £40, is that a good price????
Sounds good to me Cole! If it's tender driven, then that price is about right. If it's loco driven - then you got a real bargain! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Wonder if Peppercorn was crushed when he heard they were all scapped. He must have been riveted watching them being built. He probably Tender-ed his resignation after they were cut up.
I know - must have been sad - not sure when he died, but presumably he would have lived to see it! :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Haha it was! Well spotted, sorry I didn’t give a proper view!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It's Allen from Simon Martin's "British Railway Stories"
Ahh yes I've heard about that!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Wonderful video and wonderful model
Thanks so much - really glad you enjoyed it! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Well, I'll say this. Three locomotives that ran expresses. I wonder which of them would win in a race.
Ooh I wonder - might have to test that! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
