Yes, but sticking to conventional means would help more. This aria has falsetto but overdoing it ruins it(that's but meant to convey the soprano's talent over it). You'd listen to Julia Lezhneva doing it, she's darn talented and terrific but her performance loses the control, it goes wild(good though). There it is, and the outfits too now are being modernized (I like that but it takes away the beauty).
На мой взгляд, Юлия Лежнева исполнила эту арию лучше всех. Она подарила нам прекрасный момент вдохновения, полёта и абсолютного счастья! Спасибо, Юлия!ruclips.net/video/c4DpYgG3FyM/видео.htmlsi=QvM2uQDmGtGzLa2u
I love the choreography hahaha This is how virtually all my musician friends dance to classical music anyway, and I was really not expecting it. Made me laugh and want to come see a production on my next trip to England :)
I have now seen this production four times (three different years) It is my favourite opera and this along with Va tacito are super. The dancing makes it super - love it!
I saw it for the third time this year and was surprised by how violent it was. All three Cleos were great, but for stage presence, acting and charm, Danielle de Niese was the greatest.
I just recently came across this video and have watched it about 2 or so dozen times. Danielle is not only a joy to listen to, but also to watch!!! Not sure if the dance moves were current for Handel's day, but they sure work here!
Simply stunning! Total musical and dance delight how anyone could not be entranced Mystifies me. Loved it when I saw it years ago and still totally love it.
@@cristinahernando132 Thankyou for answering, Cristina! The Umbrella dance sequence is wonderful isn’t it..? (even better than the one shown here). I really wish someone would upload it. 😃💃🏾 Thanks again.. (from 🇬🇧)
Such artistry and charisma and relevance. The colonial nonsense (great nonsense), the choreography and immediacy. Hell, Danielle is singing this very hard scene while also DANCING. So intimate and charming.
You guys who are so critical of this bit of silly fun might want to be a bit more open to something different. The gestures actually kind of track the music, and hey, it shouldn't all be so damned serious. These notraditional Glyndebourne productions are fun and surprising, never what you would expect. That's a good thing! Lighten up and enjoy something new and different. It's supposed to be entertainment, not deadly serious high art. You're lucky you did not attend operas in the 18th and 19th centuries, when everyone ate and chatted and walked in and out and called out to the performers. Now that would have driven you absolutely nuts.
I'm actually working on this aria as part of my Spring repertoire. I'm still working on the notes in the faster passages, but I love her movements/dancing in this. I might even try some of this to help me learn the piece and to feel it more :).
Poor Cleoparta, now she's supposed to dance... 😅😅😅😅... Who knows how is the role of Giulio Cesare... maybe he's supposed to rap dancing in this production?
I don't understand why these stage directors like to ruin opera in this way! The dance is ridiculous and out of place. It diminishes the beauty of the music. They think they make it modern, maybe?!
Did they feel that deNiese didn't have the chops to pull the aria off without the distracting and totally inappropriate (to the story) choreography? Perhaps she doesn't, but all the gyrations don't help a bit.
This goofy dance skit is way out of any reasonable interpretation of the sense of the aria. I don't even get it. What's next, the Wedding March in zombie clown suits? I think it's the old "let's do something random and people will think we're really avant garde and intellectual" gambit. "Hey, I have a really artsy idea. Let's put Cleopatra in early Twentieth Century quasi-military garb and make the whole opera look ridiculous." " Oh dude, you're so creative and hip." I have no problem with playfulness in art, but this little exercise just stinks of pretention.
that dance... Well, it doesn't really work for me :( more like american musical than dances in opera :( It was too silly, but maybe a little bit funny by the way.
She always sounds like she’s out of breath from emphysema. And then constantly over singing to compensate. Love her as a performer but this ain’t her role.
The directors have gone crazy?Do they know a thing about opera and singing?Even so,the maestro why didn't say anything and let this fiasco go on?Fine singing marred by staging.Singers speak out!
Atrocious production with absolutely no relevance whatsoever to the story or the actual words and music. Thanks to de Niese vocal ability such stupidity in the current "director's opera period" at least has a musical impact worth the greatness of the music. Directors who cannot stand to provide actual relevant productions should stop directing opera.
But you assume that 'relevant' means 'To my taste' which is an impossibly egocentric point of view. To misuse the word 'atrocious' to descibe this innovative, engaging and specatcular production displays a singular lack of taste, and I believe that the audience's raptuous applause to this and other pieces in the opera says it all. Or do you believe that those who actually go to Glyndbourne are Philistines?
This aria is actually hard enough and the fact that she can FREAKIN DANCE WHILE SINGING is just... Wow.

This was a dazzling production - the best I have ever seen. Handel's opera is just glorious. Highly recommended.
It's musical theatre guys, a Baroque production number. Terrific fun! :)

This may be a new art form: the "dance opera." I love it! I want to see more.
She's made for this,wonderful preformance.
The aria is enchanting and cheerful, and the silly dancing just adds more charm! I love it!

I have news for those who dislike it because it is not traditional. Handel's glorious music has nothing to do with ancient Rome or Egypt.
Actually, silly dancing is a bonus to this production

This was a truly marvellous production. I find the music and performance dazzling - Aidan Turnbull
Just excellent and absolutely not silly, amazing ❣️
I also love the choreography....
Blew me away - combing modern dsnce to Baroque music. And she is ravishing
