You don't find many Kowalski U-Code Challengers with their original engines around anymore. But Nick managed to get his hands on just such a rare machine. Today he's going to begin the rebuild process by taking the car's original 440 V-8 apart. And he's bringing us all along for a look inside.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had the pleasure of stopping into Nick’s garage last week. Nick I appreciate the time you spent with me touring the shop and taking you away from your busy schedule. To all, Nick is as genuine in real person as we see in the videos. Hope to see you in the near future.
Rob from London
he's definitely old school and a class act
Robsmopar. Rob, it was my pleasure.
When I lived in Calgary my friend had 67 Chevy 4 door Caprice with Police suspension and a 396. After the engine collapsed a lifter her decided he would blow up the engine, so in park he floored the gas until it blew up. After 10 minutes the motor was still running fine except for the lifter. I couldn't believe how strong big block Chevys were. And on top of that the car was a great cruiser. with the police package and new tires and shocks at 100mph it was like it was on rails in the curves. He also had a 69 Impala SS427 he he cherished. Another one of his cars was a 64 SS396 El Camino he got a DUI in. When you start drinkin' you stop thinkin'.
Nick built the motor 20 years ago and it's still running great today there's something to be said about that!
Joe Downey - I was thinking the same thing ‼️🍺
Kowalski ! The legendary name ..... can’t wait for these next few videos of the of the Kowalski project ! 😎
Thank you Knick during theses hard times. Watching your videos makes me forget how bad times are. 🥰🙏👍🍻🌈❤️🌅🏎
Hello from a fellow Hellcat owner. What a great Car. Mines a 2016 Plum Crazy Purple with full bolt one making 1,050 HHP and 1,000lb/ft of Torque. An incredible ride even at the weight the big girl carries. Love your channel. Please follow Nicks Kowalski build closely. Thanks!
HI Nick your video's are awsome way better than anything discovery can do, I love watching them its tv with out commercials. I am a ford man now but my heart is with mopars my first car was a 1969 charger r/t 440 magnum hub cap car true sleeper ac automatic I was 17 not much could hang with that big ass block. My best friend had a 66 273 cuda we built a 340 with a racer brown cam and an original 6 pack set up at17 years old
90taz scooter. Good old days.
Nick Panaritis your still enjoying the good old days and so am I
Nice can't wait to see it up and working with a engine on it....
When i had my Ford 347 stroker built by Nutty Proffesor Transmissions over here in the UK, i sent the block away to be X rayed, well worth it for peace of mind, it got the big thumbs up, he also up graded my C4 trans for quicker shifting for the extra power plus a few extra goodies, He's the main man on 727 transmissions here, you can find on Facebook. cheers..
347chas. Thanks, but I have done many 727 myself.
Watching your videos makes me miss the '72 Plymouth Duster 340 I had.
Last 71 Boss 351C I looked at was in Longueuil, Quebec in 1988. Gold/Black stripe & int, top loader 4-speed. He wanted 2000$ firm.
I seen alot of 440HPs with a hole in the block from neglect or a missed gear on the 833, never my own, as a teenager I hung out with older hemi guys & they told me to never overrev a big block. I listened to them.
the rebuild..restore of a life time for Nick...
Without fail, every episode of NG makes me watch with a constant smile on my face.
My wife says I "talk back" to the screen when I watch. I probably do. :-)
If there's a better auto channel on YT, I haven't seen it - and I'm so old I was a beta tester for YT back
when it first started!
Everyone be safe up there, Nick!
-Ed on the Ridge in TN
Thank you Ed. We’re glad that you enjoy our channel up there on the ridge.
Been here since you started. I'll be here as long as you are. :-)
moparedtn - Have you checked out Cold War motors? They are serious car nuts up there, bringing old cars back to life...again in 🇨🇦Canada 🧐💀🎯‼️
I wish I would have trained to be be a good wrench like these guys.
Nick, you've got my dream job.
An accountant from Ohio USA.
I am always glad to see these videos in my mail box.
Love the Mach 1 too; and that BMW Looked like The Mach 5 from Speed Racer only with Gold Wing Doors Sweeeet!!! Thanks For Shareing Nick
When Nick get's the dyno going he is going to crazy busy with it.
Spooler. I have a few engines ready. Need to get going, because my clients are waiting.
Thats cool that a viewer sent him the shifter bolts.
Another great video ! Very much look forward to them.I once bought a '69 440 upon disassembly it looked really good, but had one 6 pack rod with 7 standard 440 rods.I immediately thought boy how much out of balance was this thing !
tim rayburn. Way out of balance for sure.
I have owned both big blocks and small blocks from mopar I really like both! But what I really like about the big blocks is the external and easy to change oil pumps on them!Nick you are a car God to me!If I can ever get up there to meet you in person I will bow down to you!!!!!!!!!Johnny Hawkins Kentucky USA!
ideally, oil pumps shouldn't need changed, if one does time for far more than said oil pump change time. then again......
I’ve also owned both, and the big blocks are by far my favorite. External oil pump, no coolant in the intake manifold, just 4 bolts to change a water pump, flat 1-piece oil pan gasket, timing chain cover is separate from the water pump housing, no core plug inside the bell housing to start leaking... and best of all, they rarely need you to mess with any of those things.
Nick I have a 69 440 6bbl and when I’m ready I will be calling you for a rebuild! Love your channel!
Thanks Nick for another great episode.
Vassili & Oliver getting it done as usual. Great job fellas.........Listen to the older mechanics and stay healthy my friends!
I look forward to new videos from Nick and his crew all the time! Can't wait to see Nick's Challenger engine rebuilt and on the new Dyno!
good driving, always get used to the vehicle, steering, braking, pedals, shifting and all the rest. afterwards, abuse it grandly ;)
the old slow down to go fast routine, so many folks miss that part! :)
Even though I have been an import guy for most of my life. I have always loved the old muscle cars from the 70's. And after discovering Nicks channel over a year ago now I have grown to love them even more! Specifically the Mopars. I have learned more about muscle cars from watching this channel then I have anywhere else. And I am also very intrigued by the Kowolski U code Challenger!
I'm 50 years old. So I totally remember watching that Movie on T.V. when I was little. And to me the car was the star of the Movie! As a young boy I was often drawn to any movie that had a cool fast car in it. And Vanishing point definitely ranked up there as one of the great$!
Anyway, I just wanted to say I'm glad I found your channel Nick. And and I can't wait to see that Challenger when it's finally done!!
Rob Fabulous. Thank you for having the same interest in the U code "Vanishing Point" Challenger.
Can't wait to see pulls with the new dyno!
Raymond, it’s getting assembled as we speak!
God bless you Nick, a hard working guy like you deserves a perk here and there!!!
Sweet, happy to see the "start" on the U code.
Nick I really enjoy engine teardown and assembly videos, keep up the good work
Hi Nick, Bill drom Houston Tx.
Thanks for the great videos, the Kowalski build was great, the finished car is Outstanding. Years ago, I had the opportunity to buy a lime green" 440-6pk/ pistol grip 4spd, 1970 Challenger for $1200. US, but my dad wouldn't let me get a bad ass for a first car. Now days, that same car is worh around 40 K
In the same condition as in 1983.
cant wait to see up coming videos of the kowalski project.....cheers nick and crew....
Nick, I’m a big fan of your channel. You remind me of my father, always taking pride in your work and always doing the job correctly the first time. I could use a T-shirt or hoodie. 3x
I was at the big classic and muscle car auction in Saratoga Springs yesterday, there was a 70 Challenger 440 automatic with air mostly original Survivor car from Texas. Nice medium blue, great original condition, nobody can restore a car properly. It never quite looks right, and I gave them your contact info so they can watch your videos and think of their next project with you in mind
also graveyard cars. does nice restorations on Mopar's.
BOY !, TALK ABOUT A "BORED & STROKED" NICKS GARAGE COMMENT !, LOL, STROKED !
CORVAIRWILD. Thank you.
I understand, they will take a super rare car and paint it with base coat clear coat. The most important part of the car, no wonder they never look correct.
The top tier Mopar restorers, like Roger Gibson , never use clear coat on them. That is a big no no in a platinum Mopar restoration.
Project Kowalski - love it!
johnnykR9. My favorite car chase movie "Vanishing Point"
Not makiking us wait,Thanks Nick!
Watch your videos all the time. All the way from Thailand. Actually from US but lived in Thailand 24 years.
Can't wait to see the completion of project Kowalski
Good luck with your dyno, Nick! I'm starting to wonder when those guys are going to show up! Perhaps you had to get wiring and other items ready before they will show up. I like how the guys are making nice and neat wiring runs to the dyno desk. Being an electrical engineer, I know all too well that neat wiring and labeling make life so much easier down the road. It's so easy to start out clean and before you know it you might have a rat's nest of wiring. I don't see that happening in your shop. When the SuperFlow guys show up, they will appreciate it as well.
Thanks for the great video!!
tscooter22. As of today, technician from SuperFlow is in my shop. And yes, he appreciated the work done before he started.
Guess i need to come for a visit old friend!
Great Video Thank You 🙏
Hopefully the 440 is all good for a rebuild. And the dyno is also taking shape. Good work nick. 😉👍👍👌
Thanks Nick👍
That was an awesome video Nick!! It doesn't matter what kind of car it is you work on it and that is awesome keep up the good work!! I'm pretty proud of you for hanging the world flags
Wow ,,how appreciative this man is,great to be on top,,,you work hard,You have earned it,,,,The episodes I like viewing, the more interested I become
All videos should end with a burnout!
Can't wait to see the 440 getting tuned on the new dyno.
Oh Yes, progress report and WowWee!!! How In the world does that happen that Connector Rod Is harden Steel... I Never stop being amazed by things that happen like that Thanks Nick For the Progress Report
Russell Lamb. I was amazed myself.
Nick Panaritis How in the He-Double hockey Stix did that piston spin around In there To make that burn mark??? Surely there had to be a loud noise one would think the driver had to hear that and shut the motor off really fast... shaking my head???
YES !!!!!!!!! Beautiful BM'er... !!
Top notch video as usual! 😊
Super good video nice camera work and music !
As always, my favorite channel. Very happy for you Nick! Great car!
I'm excited to see something on the new dino
Rusty Stuff. Me too. Too long without it. Time to make noise soon.
@@nickpanaritis4122 I know there probably is customers ahead but I'm excited to see Kowalski on there
Great video Nick. I like the editing. 440 is my favourite Mopar motor. I think it's a better street engine. Your Kowalski is going to look great when it's done. Can't wait to see it on the dyno when your finished. Keep up the great job. Terry from Toronto.
Terry Tro. I will do my best on this car. Thanks for watching Terry.
Really looking forward to seeing the project car being built, knowing you , this car will be a trophy car like all the work you do. Dyno coming soon..............YES
So exciting to see Nick - great share for us MOPAR die-hards!!
just subscribed so I can keep tabs on this project, Nick your enthusiasm and passion is beyond belief, keep up the good work. Great car from a great film 😉
Myself, I’d take that green ‘68 Chevelle SS396 from a few episodes back over that cell phone charger of a BMW. :D
That particular car is identical to the one my dad bought brand new with the exception that his was the lighter shade of green and was a 375hp car. I luckily have videos and pics of the car that i love.
Great news. Cheers guys
Very nice.....Gotta love all things Nick!
Looking forward to your Challenger build, will you assemble the front clip and have the engine bay detailed before installing the motor, or just build the motor, Dyno it, and install when body work is done? Great video, gonna be a long winter, these keep me alive
Pontiac GrandPrix73. I will restore every part, and do all the installation on the Challenger RT in-house. The only thing I will not do is the body metal work and paint. We will show the progress as much as we can.
That broken connecting rod gave me an idea. Make connecting rods that fail like that at a happy spot where the pieces won't be able to damage the block.
That's not to say don't make them strong though.
OR a crumplezone on the rod that crushes down ruining compression before the rod gets to yield.
Wouldn't work for many reasons. There'd be nothing to keep a piston like that from falling in to the engine or colliding with whatever is swinging around. BUT! If pistons were designed like hydraulic lifters they could follow a cam like crankshaft. They'd need springs to keep them up against the camcrank further complicating things, and then the rollers would have to have huge bearings it'd be an expensive mess that probably wouldn't return as much energy as a 50 year old Mopar. A magnet probably wouldn't even be able to push a piston up in a cylinder anyway, it would just jam sideways and stop.
Awesomeness Best Automotive Channel On RUclips Great Work Nick n Crew 😀😀😀😎👍🏼
WHAT A CREW, GREAT TALENT IN THE SHOP !!! MOOSE FROM MICHIGAN
I can’t wait too see this run on the dyno beautiful classic engines
No question this should be a T.V show on the history channel
I'm glad you got you car nix if all the boss mustang and cobra and all ford performance car I have work on I think that's enough just sat back an look at them
Nick, a 1970 Dodge Dart would be my Candidate for your Hemi.
Awesome power to weight ratio plus a unique swap indeed
Speaking of Kowalski, we watched vanishing point 2 last night and I thought of you Nick.
Saw a beautiful 67 gtx at dmv the other day, with the 440.
Manny is a Genius.
He sure is.. some of the guys at the shop call him 'The Mad Scientist'.
@@NicksGarage Haha.... Perfect.
Great video ! Great content as always . Thanks for your dedication
Liked before the video even started....I've got a problem! 😉😄😂
Anybody using the Milwaukee Road logo for their avatar can't have a problem, other than deep-seated nostalgia! :P
Registered Milwaukee Road obsessed fanatic! 😉
Nice video, you will probably see your brother today, his Duster wasn’t running good at Icar yesterday.
Hey Nick, check that steering column in that Mustang. It's coming lose at 10:45
👍Great show! Lovin’ these longer ones! Wishing that 440 could talk because it has a story to tell!
I betcha Mr Nick will be able to listen to its conversation soon enough! Lol!
Thx to all you guys responsible!
I suspect everyone is having a bit of fun even though it’s still work for you guys.
Won’t be much longer, I’ll be enjoying my new “Nick’s Garage” hoodie that’s been in my closet for the past few months awaiting the cool ‘Fall’ days in Kentucky. At any rate, Thx again✌️
Major Payne. The whole car has a story. I wish it could talk to me, but no luck.
Did you get a chance to try on that hoodie yet, Major? Hope you're keeping warm.
Nick's Garage - HECK YEAH! 👍Those Nick’s Garage Hoodie’s are sweet! Thx, Cool design😎
Right on!
That is one bad ass motor
nick you have the best videos on u tube!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lee Tuner. Thanks Lee.
here we go
Id take a classic Mopar over that BMW i8 any day of the week
We agree with you. And we think most viewers of this channel would too.
Me too
It took a lot of teeth to pay for that BMW...😁
I would too, I daily a Land Rover FC 101 with 38" tyres no power steering, no AC no power with 6:1 gears and it tops out at like 80km/h on the highway. I absolutely love it but sure as hell it leaves me wishing for a car like the i8. The only consideration with that is really if you're gonna drive it every day or not, it's nice to experience old school as long as you aren't stuck with it all the time.
Wrong guys, take the BMW, sell it and buy 4 or Mopars unless you are going for those rare Hemi Convertables. lol
My 440 1970 RR With TRW forged rods and crank I twisted one too
He's a Die Hard Mopar man. Who among other things built a 460 SVO for a Boss Ford. Fuckin' A Nick. Right on!
Thank you, Great vid!
Awesome video nick. You'll probably have to be getting a bigger shop due to your clients and your business operations
More space would be nice.
Great video boss 👍
Can't wait to see more 🌷
Nick love your videos , your the best !
John Mavros. Come by the shop, and see the new Dyno set up.
Roller cam, port the heads and let that thing eat Nick!
Nick thanks for another great video!!!
I really enjoy your videos and I'm a Mopar guy as well!!
Nick wants to drive his Kowlowski into the Vanishing point ...Screw BMW or Mercedes AMG. Nicks Shop is much bigger than your NAPA store. Has all the parts already.
I hope the block and crank are still good!
Michael Cuff. Had them checked and are in good shape.
I once had a 235 chevy truck engine blow a piston. The piston and rod went out the oil pan .Not a scratch on the cylinder or crankshaft. Weird eh? that rad snapped from over reving I bet .
You see how long and heavy that piston is , you can bet- over reving was it
Great movie vanishing point.
Cool intro.
One of the original challengers from the movie is on display at the Wellborn Auto Museum in Alexander City Alabama USA.
The300savage. REALLY, Did not know that.
It has a 440 and torqueflite. The museum has a website, wellbornmusclecarmuseum.com I've been to the museum and it's all mopar. The man that owns it has a huge collection of low mileage hemi cars, AAR Cudas and Trans Am Challengers to name a few. Several Superbirds and Daytonas too. Love your videos, Chris Smith
dang always toooo cooool..
New subscriber here.. good luck on your build I’m enjoying your videos! My father was a service manager at a Chrysler dealer in 69-76 ish in upstate NY. Drag raced in Canada on the weekends with showroom cars.. he’s prolly heard of u I’ll ask
Kevin Scott. Back in those years, we were street racing with a 1971 Hemicuda, sassy grass green color. We were called the "Hemi Brothers" in Montreal. I am sure your dad heard of us. Thank you for joining our channel and thanks for watching.
Nick Panaritis thanks for responding! I will find out soon.
Happy christmas Nic to all your group and family .best wishes .
Note to Vassili
You keep using your hand as a hammer you might regret it when you get older matey, that's what the breaker bar is for ;-)
So true! It's a good way to get carpal tunnel syndrome.
In his case, car pool tunnel syndrome, which is worse.
... WILL regret it, you mean. That and twisting things that are too tough without a tool at all.
Wisdom speaks. I used to hear the same kind of thing when I was younger. Now I'm starting to regret not listening to them. I guess I didn't know it all back then. heh
So true, and I can tell it hurts...... usually when I got a hand down under some engine ,undoing an alternator or similar. youtube is a good cure, look up carpel tunnel massage, 😎👉😁
Can we get some details on the dodge sweptline pickup that can be seen at 20:20 in the video?? I love me some mopar pickups!! :) Keep up the good work Nick!! Shout out from Utah, USA. Maybe one day I can get my 70 Coronet up to you for some work. :)
The intake valve pushes on the piston and the crank pushed it back up
