    I mainly use a slideboard from wheelchair to bed...bed to wheelchair..I don't have the luxury of an aide..its concentration and extreme care..no rushing...this slideboard has been a blessing. No rushing using a board..

    I tie a paracord to my slideboard. That way if it falls to the floor while I am in bed, etc., I can recover it easily. A silicone mat adds friction. When I am transferring to a surface like an x-ray table that is very slick, the silicone mat makes a huge difference. I place the mat between the sliding board and any slick surface. I use the board on any transfer that I am not sure of.

    New at this so first time I looked at how to transfer. Therapist put on top of wchair bar for arm rest. You are placing on top of metal bar. Angle wchair 45* to transfer seat, surface. Both ends of board are in seat of each chair. Almost level slide. Much better than up and over metal part of wchair.

    Using a slide board while not being able to bear weight on either leg is tough and core strength is essential. I also have recovering broken shoulder so limited in reliance on left hand or shoulder as I make my transfer. Getting better at it but it’s definitely a skill to develop!

    OT student here. We've been taught that you shouldn't actually slide on the slideboard because of the potential for shearing force causing a skin integrity issue. We've been told you should use upper body strength to sort of make little hops with your bottom across the board. Thoughts?

    • @nathalieisneon
      @nathalieisneon 5 лет назад +5

      Kirsten Suhr Same - the idea is fun. But from a functionality and safety standpoint sliding isn’t recommended. However, if sliding works for a client to becoming occupationally independent then we can’t just ignore the idea.

    • @Westsideauditor1469
      @Westsideauditor1469 3 года назад +1

      That's why you use a slide sheet, prevents your skin from sticking to the slide board. I use a slide board with my dad all the time, and I use a slide sheet to transfer him and he never sticks to the board or has ever had any problems with his skin.

  • @Gragon
    @Gragon 5 лет назад +19

    1. you do not actually slide
    2. YOU DO NOT STICK YOUR HAND in the handles or hold on the side because you will compress your fingers, just like you did.

    Hi, Bob and Brad. This video is very informative. This transfer is imperative for patients with C7 SCI lesion.

    • @DanaThoughts
      @DanaThoughts 4 года назад +1

      Adel Butt - i’m not a PT or OT at all, but I am experienced in slide board WC to car seat transfers. I would make sure I had a cushion Velcroed or fully attached to my wheelchair. The transfer is easiest if the wheelchair height and car seat height are similar. I put 1 foot into the car slide the board under your butt, and slide your butt over to the car seat. Ideally, another person should be holding the board so that it does not slip. Maybe an OT or PT has some additional thoughts.

    Able-bodied and strong individual performing this vs someone who is disabled.

  • @dorothyfromoz6360

    This is impossible to do with someone who is frightened. My client has MS and when she starts to slide over to her chair she straightens her body stiff as a board in fear, nothing you can tell her will straighten her out so she’s in the sitting up position. This is all in spite of the fact that she’s rather strong in her arms and back. I had great hopes for this and still do with a little practice! You both put on a very good video!

    Dude im ass surfin slide board pro. I used a lift at home for 2 weeks after rehab and it's been collecting dust in my garage since. I gotta say Bob. I'm a lazy sob. My arms look like guitar strings and transfer anything level or downhill by myself no problem.. And my 120 girlfriend has always been my help goin uphill.. My good buddy I call Twiggy cause he looks twiggy can help me outta his little Prius (ya I know) with no problem. The point I'm trying to make is that it's ALL TECHNIQUE ❗❗❗ So don't be intimidated just be careful and have a trained helper with you. You can always call 911 for a lift assist worse case scenario... But don't be afraid to try... And ya I know I'm not bragging about being lazy I'm just saying that anybody can do it with some competent instruction and a trained helper, ❗❗ so go for it.. I'm gunna post a video of me going to and from the bed and into the car.. Your overthinking it Bobby..

    First, thanks for the video!! Quick question- shouldn’t the angle between the two surfaces be at a 20-30 degree angle and not 90?

    • @Westsideauditor1469
      @Westsideauditor1469 3 года назад +1

      Yes, that's the one thing that they did that I don't agree with. I've done some training with a few different PT's and they ALL said the same thing, to position the board 20 to 30° from the bed or chair.

    A thinner board with a plastic coating is better. A towel on the board works when naked. I have also anchored my chair with belts, ties, have even used leggings to tie the foot rest or hand rail to the surface im transferring to so that the chair will not move from the place im going to, elthe space to fall. I have also used my shoes, damp towels, and other things to chalk my wheels.

    I see many videos of wheelchair users using a transfer board to get in SUV's by themselves. Is this safe? I had been getting into one with a transfer board and one time it slipped out from under me. I ended up with a fractured femur. From the ground to the seat it was 28 inches.

    This video is 4years old and no one is yet to come up with a alternative technique to transfer that being with board or not. I’m a T6 complete, since oct2018. Yes you need and it helps to have upper body strength, but after my first year with no doctor nor therapy then following with maybe 15 sessions of pT and speaking with many levels and disabilities. I’ve learned what matters is the technique. Reason I say this is because I have the strength and according to three PTs they says I’m doing the technique right. Yet it’s been 3 years and I still yet to transfer. I was discharged from PT and been on my own again for months. There must be a different method.

    • @Chevrolegs_25
      @Chevrolegs_25 2 года назад

      No it’s not because of lack of time or practice. I’m constantly trying to figure new methods or positions. I did stick with one for a while. “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.'" - Rita Mae Brown/Jane Fulton (not Albert Einstein ) from the 1983 novel “sudden death”

    I had a surgery on my arm years ago and now have fake bone. when the weather changes it aches and really stops me from regular routine stuff. any tips,tricks or suggestions for people with post surgery pain? and why does areas of past operations hurt during certain weather? TY you guys are great! :-)

    • @barologybreakdown6771

      I'm an OTR. Usually it's due to colder weather. The blood vessels vasoconstrict (get smaller) with colder weather which means there is less blood flow. Less blood flow means that your muscles will fatigue faster and also are not working at an optimal level. Which results in more strain on your tendons, joints, and bones. It is good to warm up your muscles in colder weather with cardiovascular activity or stretching to get the blood flowing Hope that helps.

    I find these guys irresponsible to be using a slide board to a non-SOFT/CUSHIONED surface. To a non-cushioned surface, a board can slip/slide laterally. Please Believe me folks. I’m not a PT, PTA or OT. I am simply a very educated disabled person, and I know what is safe in this regard.
