For me, definitely 'one bike to rule them all'. But I don't compete and I search for fun and adventure in riding bikes, and not so much for marginal gains and pure performance. Hence for me, this would be rather a gravel bike. And while I think Pinarello makes really beautiful frames, I can't afford even for cheapest of them.
Definitely; I would definitely prefer a /comfortable/ aero bike over an ultralight one. Latest grand fondo I was dropping the peloton with their race bikes on climbs with my rando bike (Velo-orange polyvalent, wide tyres, and an rando bag....heavy and super not aero), but they were always catching up and I was struggling to hold their wheels during the flats and downhills. Jury is out whether the ability to carry pastries easily was worth the aero penalty.
Yes to the "do it all", but dependent on where the majority of riding is done (flat, rolling or in the Alps like Ollie). Trek to be the next one with a Madone/Emonda mix?
Somebody won 2 TdFs, the 2024 Giro, a ton of one-day classics and 90% of the races he started in 2024. And he did all that on a single aero/lightweight bike. I don't think it was the rider's skill, talent and power...it must have been the bike! So I am going with one bike all day and year :-)
They've got to keep Chinese women in oppressive factory servitude somehow you know, and the only way they can see to do that is to shift more £££££ units to impressionable middle-management wannabe MAMILs. It could be any consumer durable, but it's bike-shaped.
@@rob-c. I think that, if you aggregate all their claims over multiple years and product cycles, we should by now have weightless bikes, with infinite stifness and zero drag. We are not quite there yet...
If UCI rules required riders to ride the same frame in all stages of the grand tours, but allowed tweaking bar/stem/seatpost/crankset geometries, we'd get better all around bikes with better component options into the hands of more potential competitors.😁
More compliant; More colours in paintjob; More letters in the name; Compatible only with 1 x 14 speed wireless groupsets; 1 piece stem, handlebars, rear light, front wheel and helmet; Bespoke tyres to match the seatpost; Aerofoil profile saddle; Requires house sale paperwork to get on the waiting list.
Aero bottles could be safer since it appears there are flat sides that will deter a thrown empty from rolling back into the riding path. From the single image it is hard to tell if a round bottle, from neutral support, may also fit in the cage.
I think a "combo" (lightweight aero) bike is the way to go. As aero bikes become lighter, it makes a lot more sense to have 'one bike to rule them all' instead of having to buy a quiver of bikes. After all, you have to save money for the endurance bike, the gravel bike, etc. :D
It’s a shame because it just isn’t their fault. They still create content that’s watched. They still have plenty of interested partners. It’s just big daddy discovery that has other plans.
One problem with the Trek aero cages: you're away in a break in the Tour on a baking hot day, your team car hasn't been able to get up to you and there aren't any soigneurs with bottles at the roadside. You've no bottles left and you're desperate for a drink, so the motorbike with the spare bottles comes alongside. The only problem is, you can't fit a round bottle in your cage. And you're outside the zone where you can dispose of bottles at the roadside. What do you do?
Okay, Ollie's entry in the Bike Vault reminds me of something a guy did a couple of decades ago when Hertz had a stable of brand-new 2005-or-so Shelby American Mustangs in their rental fleet. So the gent rents one and drives it to a prestigious car show and enter his showroom-new rental and wins the best overall with it, much to the chagrin of actual Mustang owners who were steamed about a rental car stealing their thunder. 😀
The point of this bike isn’t to make people who aready have a dogma buy the new one, it’s to make it more likely people looking for a new bike, buy this one. Incremental improvements of the same base makes for eventually, a perfect product.
That's complete horse$#it. They might be able to take a sip or pour some on themselves, but they won't be able to put it in their bottle cage.

Did a light bulb burn out in the studio? Also... when can we get a tour of the set with stories behind the decor? This would be good for the GCN Show as well.
There have been more than a few times we have seen in a challenging road race situation where no team service is available, another team giving a bottle to a rider in need. LIDL Trek's odd shaped bottles make that an impossibility - in either direction - unless you immediately jettison the bottle. Also: Neutral service bottle?
An aero bike and a climbing bike feel very different. Do you want to soar over the top of the hill, and bomb down the descents? Or do you want to get that incredible instant feedback when applying power on the hill? My current bike (if I spent a bit more money) could make a pretty decent climbing bike, but the reality is that I'm just not strong enough the get the benefit of the snappy response. I'm slogging up the hills and saving 1 kg isn't enough to kick me out of slog-mode. For that reason, I think if I were to choose a high end bike it would be aero all the way. The "one bike to rule them all" is interesting, but probably not for me. If I'm spending a ton of cash, then I want to pick a direction and go all in. At the low end (that I can afford), then it barely matters because it's compromises all the way down. Though, again, at my level I think those compromises are appropriate and I might as well save the cash and have fun with an inexpensive bike.
I would love to see actual data on whether it's quicker to do a bike change on an uphill TT. I can't bring myself to believe that enough time/watts are saved on a TT bike over just 5Ks to justify the time it takes to slow to a stop, get on a new bike, and accelerate back up to speed vs. starting on the road bike and riding straight through. Please make it make sense!
regarding Lidl-Trek's aero bottles: isn't it also quite a disadvantage not being able to take bottles from neutral service or other teams if need be? i see that quite a bit with breakaways and whatnot...
About the Pinarello. As a new cyclist it's probably not a good idea to get a bike that costs as much as a Pinarello Dogma F imo. That beeing said, I would get one if I had alot of cash to spare.
I am worried about Ollie's finances. A Pinarello, Canyon Aeroad and then a Pinarello again in the same year. Ollie if you ever need a place to crash because of mortgage/rent related problems, you are welcome at mine. As long as you bring your bikes along and i am free to use then as well!
Sir Ollie and Rupert, here’s a video I’d like to see. How about wind tunnel testing and comparing an aero vs climbing/race bike. Obviously the same brand bikes like the Merida Reacto and the Scultura, the Canyon Aeroad/Ultimate, Giant Propel/TCR. Don’t know if anyone else would be interested but I’m intrigued! Please?!?!
Been saying it for a while now, world tour teams should be restricted to 2 bikes. One for TTs, and one for all other stages. Manufacturers are reducing their line ups because it's no longer sustainable to manufacture so many different frame sets. UCI should reflect this economic reality. It would incentivise manufacturers to build the best all round bike, like Pinarello, rather than speciality bikes suited to specific terrains. This would also reduce cost, for R&D, spares and logistics with the number of bikes reduced by 1/3 in the case of some teams.
Hello. I'm two-eyedRoy, you might remember me from the @26:50 mark of this very video! I *am* meaning "What are they like ... in comparison to ... other wheelsets". Not a 'what's better?'. Speed, handling, comfort... If they are worse, is it by much. I'm guessing they're not super nimbly-bimbly, but 6 airfoil shaped CF spokes seem likely to be hella rigid. What would they be like for daily use? Are the 6 spokes quite aero hampering versus multiple thin spokes or a disc? But do they offer better control in cross winds, maybe even be competitive? (I have been watching RCTestFlight's boat propellor series where in water (7x density?) less is blades better)
I bought a trek madone because I liked the look. The new one is about to look skinny and fragile. The new one bike fits all are probably faster around my local etape as if you don’t get up the hill in this you don’t do well. The difference between a fast lightweight/ aero bike in most races is negligible. The weights of these bikes are always given on tiny frames. When they manage to get a 60cm frame to legal limit I will be impressed.
I have a brilliant photo of my brand new bike I'd absolutely love to submit to the Bike Vault, but there's no more uploader :( Any information what's going to happen with this?
Ultra aero bike: Streamliner. Ultra aero bike that can be used in real world: Velomobile. Ultra aero bike with UCI approval: TT bike. All those trump a so called aero (road) bike by a mile in speed. Choose your poison.
Fewer SKU's mean lower overhead cost for the bike maker. But how can SKU be reduced? Hmmm. Eureka! Just say this one bike is best for everything and we only have to make one bike!
Am pretty sure Trek has gone to the Aero bottles is because with the combining of the Emonda & Madone the new Gen 8 Madone is less aero than the Gen 7. So to be able to say it is light as Emonda and just as aero or more aero than Gen 7 Madone is by sticking the aero bottles on it. So I suspect that they have the Trek-Lidl team running them as pure marketing.
It seems we’ve discovered a bit of a blind spot on Alex’s nerdery in that he doesn’t seem to know that pedals are weighted to stay “not level” like that specifically to make it easier to clip in!
Hi Guys, if you were only Bikepacking with your bike would you still use a waxed chain taking drip on wax with you for the road (depending on distances covered)?
Thought the idea was that pedals hung vertical to ease clipping in, not sure how you could get them level. Also, you could get away with the paint job on the last bike if you were the wearer of the old TdF Combination jersey, remember that ?
I think the changes on the new Dogma are sufficient, im definitely a fan, but it stops there, im not quite ready to buy a new bike yet... Oh yeah, also the price thing...
If I were young, I'd go aero. Riding in wind just sucks and the aero bikes are simply sublime in those conditions. The aero bikes climb just fine too, and the extra carbon fiber allows for some groovy frame designs. Get a 'do it all' body, not a do it all bike. Go aero!
All GCN people should be banded from putting Bikes into the Bike Vault. You do own your bike they are just on loan to you. I have three classic British design bikes. Which bought over the years.

Go aero!
Can we have the app back now GCN is independent again?

Maybe Alex should spend some Zwift currency on some Dura Ace cranks... (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
Why is this so dark? Color grading / Post processing issues?
All GCN people should be banded from putting Bikes into the Bike Vault.
You do own your bike they are just on loan to you.
I have three classic British design bikes.
Which bought over the years.
