      considering the limitations on the console they were working on it makes sense banjo would win. rare really got every ounce of juice out of the n64 by the end of its life cycle.

      Plus, judging from the other winning votes, it did seem like the 90s audience was more keen and favorable to just plain ol' simple fun, than any of the overtly artsy types. If the modern crowd had existed back then, there wouldn't've been a chance in hell that Banjo would've won, let alone twice. Lookit what Metal Gear Solid, Alpha Centauri and Oddworld lost to, versus what Pizza Tower and The Super Mario Bros. Movie were up against.

      Half Life was always kind of an ugly game though. Very impressive lighting and particle effects but there were many N64 games that beat it on other technical levels. I think people forget how powerful and capable the N64 was.

    1:42:51 I went straight to the sauce, Gabe Newell, who confirmed via email what that card handoff to Coolio was: "It was a business card so he could email me." He didn't go further into clarifying whether Coolio did indeed send an email, beyond suggesting that Valve's Doug Lombardi may have picked up the connection from there. So, there ya go.

      Half Life 1 was cool, but Counter-Strike was far more popular. The online transition already took hold and nobody wanted to play single player games on the PC since it could connect to the internet and the N64 couldn't.

    Wonder what the deal is with Pokémon Red & Blue being referred to as "DMG Pokémon"? I know that DMG is the product code for the Game Boy, so it's not unreasonable, but I've never heard the Gen I games referred to like that before. I guess it has the benefit of covering the original Red/Green/Blue games from Japan, but since this is an industry award show presumably focused on games released in North America in 1998 that doesn't seem particularly relevant. Really curious as to whether this designation was used in any other official/press contexts.

    • @NezuChan
      @NezuChan 10 месяцев назад +3

      It almost makes me think that it was a placeholder before the Western names were finalized, but they surely must have been at this point. It is perplexing, but there were Japanese devs and such in the audience, so I think it might have been to avoid some naming confusion. DMG being an odd but functional choice. Why not Game Boy? I don't think we'll ever know for sure.

    Poor Miyamoto seems so uncomfortable. Did they not think to get any Japanese speaking interpreters? It also warms my heart to see Banjo Kazooie get some love. I think they meant platformer more in the category name, rather than action, but that naming might not have caught on yet.

    • @leftyfourguns
      @leftyfourguns 4 месяца назад +1

      Miyamoto does actually understand English, his father was an English teacher. But he doesn't like big to-dos like this, I think he only goes out of obligation to Nintendo. He's always come across as shy and reserved despite how well he still speaks in public and at events

    I found it so hilarious that after Grim Fandango flopped, LucasArts said “Fuck adventure games.”, and it wins Best Adventure Game. On top of that, Tim Schaffer had left the company after the game came out. So you can tell by his acceptance speech, he seemed unenthusiastic, knowing the direction the company was taking.

    “I will not read the list of PC games because all the PC games that were finalists for all PC Game categories are nominated for this award.” So you’re actually saying the Jump Start titles were going up against Half Life? Man…that’s some serious competition

  • @RazHolly
    @RazHolly 10 месяцев назад +2

    So this comment is coming from seeing the very first nominees for the first award. I’m guessing Zelda sweeps this, or at least close to it. It is an excellent game, but there are others that deserve credit as well, like Metal Gear Solid. This is the type of thought process of years of “Zelda could do no wrong.” Has done to me. This was a time of revolutionary games, and I hope I’m wrong about the Zelda sweep.

    • @NezuChan
      @NezuChan 10 месяцев назад +3

      It did win a lot, but it wasn't quite the sweep I was expecting, probably just because it wasn't in all categories.

    • @RazHolly
      @RazHolly 10 месяцев назад +2

      @@NezuChanexactly. My vote would have gone to Metal Gear Solid. As great as Zelda is, Metal Gear has much much much more to offer including experience. Psycho Mantis… how crazy was his programming in the game? Same as having to suffer along with Snake when he’s being tortured. Zelda lacked the real life experience MGS had, not to mention the story with twists and turns.

    • @NezuChan
      @NezuChan 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@RazHollyI agree. I think a lot of people maybe were blinded by Zelda. I personally don't like Ocarina that much, but I did not play it when it came out, only years later. Was Mantis in MGS1? I legitimately forget.
