When I was in high school my dad bought a brand new 3/4 ton Ford 4WD. As soon as he got it we drove it to the ranch and he proceeded to drive it through the roughest brush and low areas on the place. When I asked him why he was doing it his reply was something like, "I need to go ahead and knock the "new" off of this thing so I can use it like I need to." And from that point on he would drive it just about anywhere he thought it would go - so he didn't have to walk as far. Lol.
I have a brand new F250 and I ain't doing that yet, but it will be seeing some dirt and mud very soon.

I'm thankful that we could pay cash for our GX460 (albeit used). What fun it was to immediately take it off-road in Anza Borrego and use it for its intended purpose, giggling as the skidplates kissed rocks and creosote bushes gave it the inaugural desert pinstripes.

I know this is a Toyota/Lexus fan base, but even Defender owners, only a few go off road, I'm like 1% of those owners that really enjoy the outdoors wilderness. Now the one that we see a lot that is use for malls and Beverly Rodeo Drive are the G Wagons. It is absolutely the most capable triple lock vehicle and it sees 99.9 percent pavement. Sorry for those sensitive viewers, I'm just expressing my opinion just as he is pointing out. Everybody forgets Toyota and Lexus have the highest resale value. I know we don’t plan on reselling it ever, butI take great pride is getting EXTREME use out of my Tacoma Sr as it doubles as my work and personal vehicle. It’s 2wd (I prefer simplicity and practicality, I don’t do serious off roading) but I got it on KO2’s and sandbags in the rear. I kid you not this past two weeks here in the Midwest snow storms, I was spinning donuts in the parking lots while others were getting stuck or not even wanting to take their cars yt in the snow and salt. I just wash mine and maintain it but I love actually USING it. It’s a TRUCK! I toss shovels in the back, paint drip all over the bed liner who cares! Side note the traction control settings on these third gen Tacomas are outstanding for snow an ice. My 93 2wd would have had significant more trouble going where I’ve gone without getting stuck once.

I always find it awkward when striking up a conversation with an "overlander" with a fancy pants vehicle that has all the accessories on it and realizing that they have never actually taken it on any real trails. Meanwhile my Jeep Patriot with just some all terrains and some LED ditch lights has seen 100x the road use. I bought a off road capable vehicle because I wanted to use it off road. In fact when we bought it brand new, we drove it from the dealership straight up a trail. It had 82 miles on it. It has brought our family countless hours of enjoyment. Also... Washing a vehicle and making it pretty is way more fun and when it has dirt that it earned from off road adventures. Love your video and perspective.

I do think for some it is easy as heck to go offroading. If you are living in S.F., it is an absolute trek to get to a good offroading trail...especially once you have done the nearby off-roading areas/trails. It's like camping, I would LOVE to go more, but it's just tough with full time/mandatory overtime jobs, kids sports, life....etc. Another thing, I had a coworker that said I keep my truck so pristine and that it wasn't used for off-road. I had to walk him closer to see the dent, broken trim, scraped sliders, pinstripes...etc. Sometimes you have to get close to a car to actually see what it's been through. I can wash my GX460, and it still looks nice (from a distance).

While a lot of what you say is true, you are missing the resale aspect. I take my off-road vehicles off-road, but I also don’t beat the hell out of them like you do. One, because I like a nice looking vehicle, two, I enjoy detailing my vehicle, and three, when and if I sell my vehicle, I want to get as much for it as I can.
I was taught to take care of my things. Whether I own something outright, or am still making payments is irrelevant. The better I take care of my things, the nicer they look and the longer they last. Which means I can enjoy them longer, and if I decide to sell it, I can get top dollar.
For example my house. I could trash the shit out of it, let things go to hell. But one, having a trashed out home would be depressing, and also it would affect the resale value, or how much it’s worth.
So in short, an off-road vehicle is meant to go off-road, but that doesn’t mean I have to beat the hell out of it to enjoy the remote wilderness or places a non off-road vehicle can’t travel. And it also means I can enjoy having an off-road vehicle that can still look nice and retain its highest value for as long as I choose to keep it.
While your off-road vehicle is nice, and I’m sure you’ve enjoyed it, I wouldn’t ever consider buying it, for the simple fact that you beat the shit out of it.
So although you are correct in some cases it’s just a matter of priorities, what’s more important to the individual. It’s not all about debt.

Back 10-15 years ago when I lived in rural Nevada I had a 2001 tundra I paid $9,000 for. I don’t even remember the brand of all terrain tires it had on it but i went all over hell in that thing and had some of the best times of my life in a bone stock truck. I would usually carry 2 spares and a hi lift jack. It was hard to beat the freedom and simplicity of a bedroll thrown out in the back of the truck and an old Coleman cooler. I’d cook a steak over an open fire with almost no utensils required. Now my camping trips are a little more complicated as I got married and had kids but I’ll always remember that sensation of going out with the bare minimum.
I see all these gadgets guys are taking now for a simple overnight trip and just shake my head. So many items to manage and maintain, they start to own you at a certain point.

Another component is that people don't want to enjoy their vehicle by doing stuff like getting an exhaust system or a piggyback tune because they fear voiding the warranty. This is an interesting discussion less about cars and more about behavioral finance. Ben Felix, another RUclips person, discusses the hedonic treadmill on one of his videos. The essence is that people enjoy buying nice things more than using nice things. They get very little utility out of luxury vehicles other than the fleeting dopamine dump from the purchase itself. The person in a 2024 Corolla has the same driving experience as someone driving a 2024 GX550 for most types of driving. People feel good *thinking* about driving, and feel better the more expensive the car, but when asked how they felt after driving, there's zero difference when comparing the luxury driver's actual experience vs the economy car driver's experience. And after the glow of the purchase wears off, there's no difference in enjoyment between ownership of a luxury car and a cheaper car. It becomes a gilded statue, a status symbol, to keep up with the neighbors.
The irony is of course buying a cheaper vehicle, paying cash, and not being afraid to drive it, scratch it, and ding it up, would bring far more enjoyment to most people than someone taking a luxury off road vehicle into the backcountry and beating it up.

Because I go off road with it constantly and it's a fight one just can not win if one chooses to use it for it's intended purpose. My Gladiator is no different. I will wash all the dirt and mud off it when I can not recognize my own Jeep. I use both of these wonderful vehicles for their intended purpose and keep the "abuse" within engineering specs. Fun video, I agree with a lot of your opinions. Maybe fear of paying a bill on something they no longer can use keeps people from taking their vehicles out. I'm 19 years Active Duty military so I have the unfortunate reality of getting a new boss about every 6 months. Its a coin toss as to weather they will be decent to work with or not. My current supervisor referred to their 4Runner as an investment the other day,. I kept my comments to myself. I've learned that I make more money than most of the people that outrank me due to good financial practices, keeping minimal debt and having investments that bring in passive income. I will be fully retired and living easy in year, and would have left the military 4 years ago and retired then if I could have taken a reduced pension and the life long medical coverage etc. I'm just doing the time now, can't wait to be done.

Interesting theories on this one. I'm not sure it's always about the financing. Sometimes I just think it's really hard to scuff up that brand new, really pretty vehicle. We bought our new 4Runner with cash, added some rock sliders and skid plates, and we were on its first 4WD road with 70 miles on the odometer, then heading out for Moab when the vehicle had 200 miles on the odometer. While in Moab we used it how it was intended to be used, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that I wasn't as hard on it as I was on my old beat-up truck and my old clapped-out Jeep that I'd used on trails in that area in years past. I still enjoy detailing the new vehicle when I'm done with a trip, too, even though it came home so dirty I could hardly tell what color it was. For me it's just trying to take care of a big ticket purchase, because my wife also uses it to take the kids to school and go on grocery runs... then we take the kids for vacation and hit the 4WD roads. So, there's a balance for me, I guess?

My Outback Wilderness has definitely seen more dirt than half the Wranglers I see. I pick on people with Jeeps because they are the most compromised vehicle for on-road driving right out of the box. Even the Saharas are just awful on the highway. There is absolutely zero reason to have a Wrangler. Even "serious" off-roaders would be better served by a 4Runner or GX. Plus Jeeps are totally unreliable rust buckets. Rant over.

I buy my vehicles with credit AND take them on the rocks and in the mud the very next day. I think it’s opposite if you pay credit. It’s like a rental car, because you don’t really own it (you do but it’s contingent upon making your payments). And in my case, I’m not afraid to get my cars dirty, but, I like it to be clean in town. Ive cleaned my fully paid vehicles just as much as my financed ones. Perhaps not the norm but you can’t just assume this about all “clean” vehicles you see. But I’d say, just from my observations, that some of the lifted “off road” vehicles you see in the cities, don’t hardly go off road or not at all.

I think it's quite silly paying cash for a brand new vehicle for the simple fact that if it gets totaled, you're out the cash that could've been invested somewhere else. I find it more feasible to secure a low interest loan with enough down-payment for affordable monthly payments, including gap insurance. I have paid off car loans one year out, but my Toyota vehicle value far exceeded payoff amount. My 2 cents.
