  • FIXED SOUND!!!
Wednesday’s #FirstTimeReaction was #ThePoetAndThePendulum by #Nightwish from their 2015 Wembley concert. The subject matter to this song is of course far more sensitive than previous Nightwish songs that I have reacted to. Below follows some information for those living in Sweden in need of guidance, support and/or help handling mental health issues.
I love this song so very much (and I’ve listened to it at least 20 times before this upload) but it was (and still is) difficult to enjoy it 100% with pure joy due to its subject. But once again Nightwish shows us that when it comes to creating music very few (if indeed any) can beat them at composition and performance - this is an amazing feat and I am truly grateful for the gift that is Tuomas brain capacity when it comes to relate and translate score into music. Glad he found a way through the deepest pit and that we can enjoy his talent even further. It stings in the heart thinking of the possibility of having lost him in 2005, I haven’t heard all the music he has created after that but what I have heard are gems I can’t imagine my life without. So please if you or someone you know are dealing with depression, make sure to get the right help for you/them. Our world should never lose the gift that is you - such a loss can never be repaired or replaced!
    Stay amazing,
    💚✨ ~Stanzi

I just cant imagine anyone other than Floor doing the vocal range the justice it deserves. You can tell she puts body and soul into this performance. She brings me to tears every time i hear this. I have only heard this version and have no desire to hear it any other way. Closed minded maybe. But when i hear this i can feel Tuomas's pain thought her singing. Also seeing him singing him and supported by his band mates makes this performance so special.. I think he needed Floor for this song, because she becomes part of it to convey it to the listeners

I'm 39 and have loved and listened to all kinds of music my entire life and some how I never knew about them until 6 months ago! That being said I think Floor is the best front woman in HISTORY!!!! Her vocal range and her ability to really get deep into the specifics of vocal cord movement alone make her a legend but her stage presence is just indescribable. She can't move around a lot because of pyrotechnics but every single movement she makes is calculated and she just commands your attention!!! I honestly can't think of a female lead that I could even attempt to argue is better than floor. She's absolutely incredible

I think that when poeple heard the music of mozart the first time they were filled with emotions never thought about. Then came along our metal mozart and when nightwish is part of your life since 1999 you are filled with emotions never thought possible. To me nightwish is my drug i need to have everyday.

Floor said she can't look at Tuomas while performing this song because she'd fall apart. There's a little gem in this set; the song right before this is Alpenglow. Floor sings the line "conquering the darkest places" straight to him. In this video, you can see the guys go check on him.

The 5 acts represent the stages in the mind of a suicidal person might have:
Act I. *White Lands Of Empathica* --> this is about a traumatic loss (in this case of innocence.)
Act II. *Home* --> this part is about raging thoughts of self hatred and a feeling of being uprooted (longing for home even if you already are home)
Act III. *The Pacific* --> this part is about acceptance death is inevitable. Romanticising how beautiful and peaceful it could be if you would just be dead.
Act iV. *Dark Passion Play* --> this part is about raging thoughts of anticipation about actually committing suicide and how it will settle the score.
Act V. *Mother and Father* --> this part is about getting help and finding peace (without committing suicide)
"I cannot cry ,because the shoulder cries more" refers to Tuomas really needing the support from his band members, but as they where devastated as well, Tuomas felt inhibited to knock on their door unannounced and upset them by bringing up the subject.

"Poet and the Pendulum" gets me for a different reason.
I'm someone that has felt every emotion that is put on display in this song. I have been betrayed by someone who, at one time, I thought I loved. As a result, I've had trust issues since then, because of my fear that being vulnerable with people will lead me to being stabbed in the back. I've had chronic erratic depression, and I've also thought about, even planned, my own suicide.
Having said that, I have found a solace in helping others with these things. I may never be as well as I once was, but I can honestly say I have no idea of how many people I may have saved from committing suicide themselves.
As such, I have something to tell those who are hurting: You are never alone. You have never been alone. If you need help, all you have to do is ask. Find something that gives you joy, where otherwise it may be dark. You are strong. You have a well of strength that others will never know about, because of the things you have gone through. Know that there are those like me who will not let you fall, that will leave you behind. When the days become dark, and you think you can't deal with another day, remember this:
"When you can't run, you walk. When you can't walk, you crawl. When you can't crawl...when you can't do that...you find someone to carry you." ~ Firefly ep. 11, "The Message"
You've got this. Just keep fighting, and don't give up. You are more than what you think you are. All you have to do is find your reason for fighting to live -- so find it. Find it, and become the beautiful person and human being you're meant to be.
I hope this message finds you, friend, and finds you well.

      Hi Isaiah,
I do so agree with you!
In Africa somewhere, there is a common greeting: "I see you walking."
Just (still) being alive can be an accomplishment and a goal in itself.
Nobody asks the bird or the fish after the justification for its existing.
Not being dead is everything and you need not be granted that right by anyone; being alive gives the right to be alive.

I love how Tuomas borrowed from The Pit and The Pendulum, a short story written in 1842 by Edgar Allan Poe. The story deals with the psychological torment of a prisoner in the Spanish Inquisition who is publicly tortured and executed for opposing the Catholic Church. He finds himself in a rat-infested, darkened room with slippery sloped floors leading to a Pit, with a swinging Pendulum above. The Pit signifies Death, the Pendulum represents Time and the sloped floors, rats and darkness symbolise Fear. An awesome adaptation to music. Genius!
The protagonist of the story opposed the Catholic Church as he raged a war against God for taking away his birth mother, adopted mother and wife with plague and disease.
Perhaps Toumas felt he was being publicly tortured and executed by his fans for firing Tarja (the original singer) the way he did?

Thanks for the re-upload and the great reaction. The lyric "I cannot cry cause the shoulder cries more" would have applied to Tarya if they were still on friendly terms which at the time they weren't. The way I interpret it is that Tuomas as "leader" of the band was distraught but couldn't turn to the rest of the band as they were just as distraught so he had to try to shoulder all the pain on his own. Stay safe 🤘✌

I used to feel bad for enjoying the song and headbang to it, also I love how Floor and Marko managed to convey Tuomas's feelings, she representing his pain/angst and him being his raw anger
And yes, Emppu and Marko were very protective of Tuomas here, they show their support by going to him to make sure he was doing okay during the performance

This song touches a lot of emotions...especially for those that dealt with depression. I dealt with it for over 20 years....I can really relate to the line in this song..."Christ how I hate, what I have become!" Me..I tried to drink away the pain...and it never worked! Being an alcoholic is no fun...you live a life of lies in front of your friends and family!
I finally went to get help and have been sober, and depression free for nearly 22 years now. The drinking does more damage to ones body than most can understand...and I am dealing with the consequences from the abuse I put my body through.

Your attention and obvious intent to do this piece justice is admirable! And please never apologize for sharing sincere emotions. I think you've woven well a fine path between the react world and the real. Many share the reality of having to reconcile psychic turmoil with our mundane, everyday lives. This art, and useful commentary, can and should/could be most helpful in helping others with their challenges. I've been working with combat vets and first responders for some years - which has become a key tool in my arsenal to keep tame my own demons. I believe you've offered another tool for many others, and I sincerely hope they will make use of it... So thank you from me and hopefully many others! 💞 🤘👹🤘 💞

The shoulder cries more, because tarja didnt´t want to leave, she was tuomas best friend and confident. she only left due to her husbands pressure on only doing big events. Tuomas felt like he lost a big part of his world, he cannot share his grief with tarja no more, and he had recently lost his wife .

This musical score for me showed the stages of grief. The Lyric, "I can not cry because the shoulder cries more" I interrupt as the band was hurting just as much from the loss of Tarja that Tuomas felt he could not lean on them too much to help his grief. Floor lovingly brought this song to life with all the emotions it held. Still have a hard time hearing this song no matter how many times I hear it. Lastly, Bands, for the most part, stand on each side of the singer at the end of the song but here, Marco and Emmpu Stood purposely next to Tomas in support to share the grief that the song brings and support their friend. just my take

I really enjoyed this new approach of reacting to a song. There's a lot of music out there to react to this way. Try Steven Wilson “Routine“ (not the live version)
Once you get where it's going, it's heartbreaking. Tool's “Wings for Mary Pt. 1&2“ should also work very well.
    Keep up the good work!
Stay healthy, stay true - stay human!

Rather than not sharing due to the subjective nature of the material, I would suggest that there are many ways in which your subjective feelings about the lyric will either harmonize with our own or give us insights that we didn't have. Sharing our feelings doesn't diminish or invalidate others' feelings in my book. For me, they help us realize our shared humanity and empathize.

I think sometimes all the individualistic, I am unique and "You can't ever understand me" positions many have promoted may inadvertently separate some of us from what may well be our best, nearest sources of support and healing. We are ultimately only alone if we cut off others. Soo hard to open up, but soo often soo worth the risk...take your chance! (and that is a collective Your)

People watching reaction channels, go give some views to the official Nightwish channel. Doesn't take more than a few clicks, come on.

I'll try to fix it. For me they all appear when I enter to reply on comments...!? But I'll take a look at the settings to see what's happening with the comments when followers and YT users enter the post. Thanks for letting me know!

Nightwish was started by Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja, their first singer. In 2005, after the recording of the "End of an era" dvd Tarja was fired thru a letter given to her by Tuomas, but it was a band decision. The letter was also posted on the bands homepage at the same time. Marko had told Tuomas "It's me or her". This song is about the aftermath thru Tuomas eyes. A piece in five parts.
    1. White lands of Empathica.: Boy soprano (Guy Elliot). "The end, the songwriter's dead, the blade fell upon him" It's the end of an era, Tuomas feels dead inside, he was the one that handed Tarja the letter. The white lands of Emphatica is a place in Stephen Kings "Dark Tower" series.
    2. Home: "A poet without a rime, a widowed writer torn apart by the chains of hell" Tuomas got writers block, he's lost his musical "wife", his muse, and was fighting depression and doubt. "My home was there and then, those meadows of heaven. Adventure filled days one with every smiling face" The bands beginning, before the troubles started.
3 The Pacific: "On the shore, se sat and hoped under the same pale moon who's guiding light chose you, chose you all" If I remember it right Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja was having a barbecue at night when they decided to start a band together. The operatic part Floor sings was originally sung by the same boy soprano who sings the intro. When Floor joined she told Tuomas that she could sing that. He decided to keep the intro but let Floor sing that part.
The spoken words are read by a boy named Tom Williams. Both him and Guy Elliot were members of Reigate St Mary's Choir School.
    4. Dark passion play: This is about the reactions from fans and media where everyone blamed Tuomas even tho it was a band decision. He was ripped apart, even the Finnish prime minister had an opinion.
    5. Mother and Father: Tuomas took refuge at his parents house for a while, these are some of the things they told him during that time.
Tuomas was inspired by the short story "The pit and the pendulum" by Edgar Allen Poe when he wrote this masterpiece.
The first words are "The end", the last words are "The beginning". It's the end of an era and the start of a new.
When you see Marko and Emppu close to Tuomas at the end it's a thing they have thet started when this song was new. Tuomas feelings where still raw so they supported him at the end of the song. Tuomas had chosen to have Anettes song cut out of the mix in his earpiece at the shows. This was 11 years after the events, so he's mostly over it now
