It does? The random RNG boss fights, enemy placements (especially ones you can't damage), grind for money and many other things makes me think this game doesn't hold up today compared to my rose tinted glasses and memories of it
I’m sorry this is completely unrelated to this video, but I wanted to inform everyone that Crystal Project is apparently out on the Switch as of today, and I had no idea it was even coming to the Switch. I mainly mention it here bc it was Jared playing it that brought it to my attention and it seems delightful. And it even has a demo available!!!!! Okay that’s it for my PSA, now to actually watch this video.
Always fun seeing someone trying this for the first time! I absolutely love this game but it has a few flaws. I remember renting this but always getting stuck in the same spot. By the time I found out what to do the rental shop took NES off their shelves 😢 years later I got myself a complete copy, but I love the fact Nintendo put this on their selection
4:04:03 Some musics in this game are really cool. 🤩 But there also seems to be too many obnoxious things in it, for instance requiring a certain level in order to beat a boss but not telling the player. And the whole level design seems a bit too random to be enjoyable imo. But it's still worth knowing about it.
This game is a rather special one for me: first spotted (and played) it at the Nintendo World Championships 1990 EXPO thing in NYC (along with Solstice) and immediately knew I wanted it when it came out. However, the day my paternal grandmother took me to buy it was on a Wednesday, when she pulled me out of school in the late morning (I normally got new games on Fridays so I could have the weekend to play them). I thought nothing of it, and had just turned the game on when my (divorced) parents came to tell me my maternal grandmother had passed away in the hospital. I was 9. Even with that memory attached, I love the hell out of this game. I don't replay it nearly as often as I do FF1 or FF4, but it does happen. I still have that same cartridge and instruction manual to this day (box is long gone, sadly), and I have always refused to sell, trade, or give it away. Alright, sad memory time over... I'm happy to see you playing this for the first time! Hope you enjoy the ride!
This was one of my favorite games for the NES. I was more of a turn based rpg fan, but the Legend of Zelda and Crystalis made me a fan of action rpgs too.
I love video game logic too, I mean in Crystalis you meet an old man named Zebu hanging out in a random cave who tells you to fix a defunct mill in town and if you do he will teach you some magic. And were all like, "Ok! sounds good!". However in real life if you encountered an old man in a cave who demanded you fix some defunct building in your town and he'd teach you some magic, you'd just call the cops.
Damn, Jared is looking especially clean and well dressed today. Also, I've been trying to get into Crystalis, but could never break through its older gameplay. This will be a great way to experience it.
I bought this at a flea market when I was in my first year of university. Started playing it and was having a lot of fun with it, but soon found out the save battery was dead D:
I really wanted to catch this stream because I have good memories of this game. Time to see if it holds up! Also, is that a posture strap you're wearing or did I log in to the BDSM stream?
Never heard of this game before. Looks fun! BTW, the 2 Golden Sun games are going to be on Switch Online here in Japan (also in the US I think). Will you play that sometime?
Enemies only being weak to certain weapons is interesting, but it's not executed well here. Who wants to keep going to the menu in order to swap weapons? That and combined with the respawning enemies makes it even more tedious. You also need to kill stuff to get money and even xp since bosses are level gated. Just feels like no one play tested this.
Interesting issue. Say Jerd is poisoned, out of magic, no items, saves in the field and is dashing for Leaf. Only everyone is gone. That becomes a soft lock and game must totally be restarted. Someone in the history of this game must have encountered that problem.
Status condition is removed on load - you can actually use this to your advantage if you know where the game auto-checkpoints, and soft reset and "continue" to clear your status. This is most commonly done by entering and exiting a cave system as in most places that creates the checkpoint. So if he died, the reloaded save would be in a pretty tough spot but would not have to worry about poison.
@@12thLevelSithLord That's a bit different though. Fights in the original Final Fantasy take time and there's a cost:benefit ratio. You don't need to be wasting time with regular imps at level 20 for example.
3:54:16 There's no rules against the boat, Batman!
This is such a good game that still holds up surprisingly well today. One of my favorites that I used to love watching my brother play.

@@genesisSOC Seems like a mixed bag to me. Some things that are still great, some things kept from the time.
Been asking for this one for a long time. Thanks Jerd, I am super happy you are making it happen.
One of my favorite weird games from NES! Got it when it released and still have it

Thanks i was hoping it would!
Zimmerman St Charles is dead
He played it for FOUR videos then just dropped the series altogether
It looked cool. It's been a while now, but I remember it getting a bit stale and samey, which might be the reason Jared bailed from it.
@@DirectorOfChaos9292 The Switch demo is realy big. It goes way further than where Jared stopped.
I loved this game as a kid! I can’t believe you’re playing this! So awesome

Yaaaas. Always wanted a true fan made remake of this one.
Perhaps the Jared Effect will strike again.
Crystalis Randomizer has a bunch of features with a ton of quality of life changes.
I saw the splash screen and the game music came flooding back to me in an instant.
So nice, I had to watch twice

If I remember right, this game came out near the end of the NES Lifetime. Loved the game growing up and I still go back and play it some times.
Love the bondage harness. glad you feel comfortable enough to wear it on camera.
The rock dudes are throwing their heads. Hilarious.
Is it just me or does Jared goes the Ada Wong RE4Remake look :D
To me it looks like an outfit from the _Hellraiser_ series of movies.
(It does need more chains and hooks, to be complete, though.)
I played the hell out of this game when i was a kid its awesome. I like it way more then zelda and zelda 2
Yeeeeessss! I remember asking for this a while back. Dude, so glad you're doing this one!
3:12:20 i think they are supposed to be gorgons, especially considering the petrified people that were in front of the cave
50:23 I have seen the Ultima games. Even finished a few of them. They’re awesome.

Jared's bad jokes make me laugh so hard when I'm high

Yep, he sure does looks clean and well dressed here, he always had been that way.

The games preamble becomes clearer when you discover the game's title in Japan is "Godslayer"
Definitely missing Vlad watching this. I feel like he would have done an awesome job with this series.

At 17:40 Jared progressed farther than I did when I tried playing this game for two full hours.
The hero from this is still one of my more favorite characters to play in ffxiv. I even had a idea of a manga for this game awhile back.
Remade Crystalis, it got a GBC port
2:42:57 Yeah, well my father went to buy milk! I'm sure he'll be back soon
I would love to see a youtube series of Crystalis Randomizer since you finished the vanilla playthrough on stream!
How would this game be as a Randomizer?
@@scatlinksean It exists, it's pretty fun! Lots of quality of life improvements.

I absolutely love this game, and have played through it 3 times. Wisconsin rules, I grew up in Sturgeon Bay.
I LOVE when you play some of this legendaries games
I played it, the part in the snow mountains made me legit sad
Try another area of them
game I found out about through nintendo power telling me about a warp code
Hello Jared.. Why not try Nestopia 1 and 2 on pc engine..Plays like Zelda..
Wait is spoony in WI?
Hoooooom!!!! Munch munch munch
Funny story, i also just started playing this game yesterday, the gbc version. Hard as hell on my phone
The GBC was my introduction to this game, but the screen crunch makes it extremely frustrating.
I'm only a little bit in, but I'm getting Star Tropics vibes

It feels weirdly counter-intuitive for Jared to be skipping by so many enemies in a game where you kill them to level up and get stronger.
He does that a lot. See any of his Final Fantasy videos and he's constantly running from fights.
