I literally binged all your videos, and I really enjoy your thoughts and opinions. I really hope this channel does well cause I look forward to seeing more from you
Check out louder than hell. It documents every sub genre of metal in each chapter and its all band members talking, not an author talking about the bands.
I recommend Boring Girls by Sara Taylor. Its a book about females in metal. Its a coming of age book about a fictional metal musician who just happens to be female. Though this book is one of those books that dips down in the middle too but if you can get through that, its really good. I recommend it.
@Sam Bowling Alley it's half good. Some of Akerlund's direction is questionable to say the least. (Copying Wanted's ending narration, that cringy mirror scene etc.) Plus for a music biopic it's seriously lacking with only a Deathcrush instrumental, a Freezing Moon/From the Dark Past (Dead never performed the 2nd song) medley, a fake Burzum track and Funeral Fog. Though it is better than having no movie about it at all. I consider it a guilty pleasure. Plus some of it was done well particularly Dead's suicide and the Church burnings. Faust and Varg's murder scenes were so brutal seeing them for the first time in the cinema.
Hey Blackmetal Werewolf, a suggestion I have for a metal book you should read. It is called Sound of the Beast: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal by Ian Christe, and, as it says, it show you the history of different metal acts throughout the ages, starting off with its roots in Black Sabbath to getting into the modern era of metal. It also has lists springing out every so often with essential bands and their albums for specific genres, like the essential Ozzy records from Black Sabbath as well as some other cool stuff. By the way, I love you're videos! Stay brutal! \m/
I recommend "Mustaine : A Heavy Metal Memoir" if you are interested in Megadeth or Dave Mustaine. This book is just about the Mustaines life with all the litle dirty and shocking details! Its a great catching book and so full of information. Interesting and good Videos! Keep it up /m/ Greeting from Germany !
As it is a band with a smaller following, I've yet to find someone else who likes Holy Grail. Awesome job man, love your videos as well as all your recommendations for bands. Thanks to you, i've found some new music to listen to. I've had the opportunity to see Holy Grail live and it was pretty epic. Keep up the good work!
Dayal Patterson is a really cool person in addition to being a really great author. I'm not sure if you have him on facebook, but he was a real help to me when I was writing my Extended Essay on black metal. We set up a Skype interview and answered a ton of questions about black metal and what makes music heavy, etc. A really great guy, totally recommend his books.
The books I have: (In no particular order) 1) Metal: The Definitive Guide by Garry Sharpe-Young (What The Rough Guide and Encyclopedia [See Below] should've been) 2) The Top 500 Heavy Metal Albums of All Time by Martin Popoff (Being 12 years old, I think it could benefit from a revision.) 3) Sound of the Beast: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal by Ian Christe 4) The Rough Guide to Heavy Metal by Essi Berelian (Much like the first edition of The Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal, it includes some bands that don't really belong, such as Boston, Asia and Journey, to name a few.) 5) The Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal by Daniel Bukszpan (I've always thought this book could be better. I'm compelled to check out the revised edition.) 6) Choosing Death: The Improbable History of Death Metal and Grindcore by Albert Mudrian (There's now a second 10th anniversary edition in hardcover. Mine's the softcover first edition.) 7) Metalion: The Slayer Mag diaries by Jon Kristiansen (Hardcover, 720 pages of underground metal history through a collection of 'zine articles [Plus additional commentary] spanning nearly 30 years)
I love Sound of the Beast, everybody should read it. You can see it's a book wrote by the fan (who heard a lot of things) for the fans, so they can find out about new bands and learn about how the comunity evolved. One of my favourite books in general :-)
Check Out CHOOSING DEATH. A history of early death metal and grindcore. In the 80s the genres weren´t very well-defined yet so it has a lot of early extreme metal of all sorts. Pretty in-depth.
Dude, I had to pause to tell you things I've heard about Varg Vikernes: 1. he said black metal is a Jewish term so he wanted his music to be called "Scaldic metal". 2. He doesn't make metal anymore because it's "black people music" or something. If this isn't stupid, I don't know what is. o.o
Sound of the Beast: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal by Ian Christe was a really good one I picked up at Chapters. It goes into quite a bit of depth, and is like a full explanation of Sam Dunn's Metal Family Tree from A Headbanger's Journey/Lock Horns. It does mainly focus on popular or mainstream bands within genres but I think relating to the sound and the context of time the author does a really good job.
You should check out "Murder in the Front Row: Shots from the Bay Area Thrash Metal Epicenter" it's pretty kick ass, its a little pricy but its really good, highly recommended
Not the heaviest of metal typically but Rock Star Comics has a bunch of old comics based around a single band (i have a Motley Crue one and Anthrax one personally) and Alice Cooper has his own line of comics, the newest series is Alice Cooper VS. Chaos (comic publisher known for lady death, evil ernie, ect) and its pretty great. Rob Zombie helped create a graphic novel called The Nail also in edition to El Superbeasto.
