They buried that shit. He talked about it on one of the best of/worst of videos, that he may not like his whitegirlturnupmusic, but that Post was a decent guy.
Kode B while i agree im just tired of newer fans comparing everything he does to Pinata. That's the great thing about Freddie is his versatility. Trap, boom bap, jazzy/soul. He has something for damn near every type of hiphop fan
Ryu Hyabusa yeah same, you only live 2wice definitely bumps but I feel gibbs needs to find someone to hook him up with some good beats on the side whenever he's not working with MadLib and man... with all this wait we probably won't get bandana till next year or even the year after because madlib works slow...
an 8/10 is at the point of nearly being perfect. You'd need to have an album with a lot of incredibly memorable songs on it, and its hard to get the intensity needed emotionally to really get into that 9 from an 8 because of how big the quality needs to change between the two (versus 4-6/10 being almost indistinguishable in content - boring and lame)
Sure Good kid and TPAB are good but not classics, Criminal Minded and The Chronic are classics, mostly stuff of the 90's are classics, nowadays stakes are too damn low
I dig this album too and can understand why Fantano think this isn't up to par with Freddie's last album but I think he was overly critical on this one. This album is far from being inconsistent and over the place. He manage to keep a theme throughout the album and the production was cohesive with the exception of maybe one track.
I loved the album. Really came from freddies heart and he told a story he wanted to tell. I know it was short but he had a story to tell and he did it with a shorter runtime instead of throwing on filler tracks like some do.
Freddie needs to take bigger risks on the instrumentals. The beats on Pinata and Str8 Killa compliment his versatility so well, throw in a few trap bangers and you have one hell of a combo. There were some good tracks off this record no doubt, but I agree with Fandangus and can't wait for Bandana!
SE Royal I really enjoyed Alexys and Crushed glass, but stylistically I thought these beats were very similar to the bulk of SOAD, seems to be Freddie's comfort zone. I just would have liked to have seen a little more variety from an MC who's killed beats from Kay, Statik, and Madlib alike.
I completely agree with your assessment of this project being a reminder that Freddie is still here. It saddens me a little that he wasn't able to keep his streak of good projects up and improve upon the last one, but I'm sure if he sits down and collects his thoughts he'll come up with something more polished and new. Thanks for the review Antoine
This album straight fire this man is completely buggin😭😭 each song a different story and you don't need to be a dope dealer to relate to his shit, although i don't care too much about phone lit also lmaooooo
I think this album is very strong lyrically and sonically on almost all the songs. The length doesn't concern me. Yeah "Phone Lit" wasn't that good but I thought his delivery was very strong on all the tracks. I'm not a huge fan of his singing either, but when he's rapping fast on tracks like "Dear Maria" and "Andrea" his bars are good and lyrically strong. His flow is great throughout almost all the album. I loved the transition in "Andrea" and the whole tracks instrumental. Some with "Amnesia" which I fell would be a track to be underrated on this album, sick opera-esque background vocals in the instrumental. Beside the hook of that song I think it was a good song. The hook doesn't even sound bad its just a bit of an unorthodox concept, not something you would think would happen. I think "Dear Maria" was one of the better tracks, it was a very good song in terms of flow. I just didn't like the auto tuned vocals in the background. "Homesick" is a really great song, love the story he tells at the end, if you want to call it that. Strong lyrics, flow, and a great job of putting forth the concept of living for family rather than friends. Very personal song, as are most songs on this album, and you don't usually see a lot of that from Freddie. I like small change in style for this album. You make plenty of valid points in the review and I respect them, I was really anticipating this review. And he did very well given the amount of time it took him to put this album together. Not considering the time it took to make the album (i.e. not giving any extra praise for that) I would give this album a strong 7 for sure, maybe a light 8 (going by your ratings) Really there is only one track that I didn't like, "Phone Lit".
Let me defend Phone Lit because I feel the need to. If you take into consideration how Freddie was spending his time behind bars, you will understand the importance of him dedicating an entire track to how he felt having a phone again and finally having the freedom to talk to or sleep with his woman. Albeit, the mixing on his vocals during the verses is kind of rough, so its still debatable what he is actually saying. Also, the subject matter has been touched on in many rap songs at this point, so its almost like a cliche to include it. I thoroughly enjoy the track simply because the hook is well written and I can understand where he is coming from. Solid review!
Thought it was meh. Really liked the transition of his music throughout Pinata and Shadow of a Doubt. I feel like this is the next logical progression and I think you're right, it isn't long enough. I've found myself really only liking Alexys, 20 Karat Jesus, and Amnesia. I think a couple more tracks could've made a more complete and cohesive theme. As a complete work, I'd probably give it a 5 or 6, but I think 20 Karat Jesus and Amnesia are some of my personal favorite tracks from any of the last 3 releases. First time watching the channel, thought this was a really well reasoned review.
Caillou opening had me in tears... Very fair review, but I'm not going to lie I really enjoyed this. I especially like Phone Lit, mostly for the instrumental. I'm surprised Anthony disliked that song so much. The organs in the hook had me jamming, and the hook itself was really catchy. I pretty much agree on everything else I just enjoyed it a bit more.
Appreciate your opinion, I'd say this is much better in my opinion though. Alexys is ridiculous, and rhyming past the bar line isn't an issue to me as many emcees do it for extra punch, and the lyrics are fire. Still, each to their own. Looking forward to the Kendrick review though
Low ass rating Fantano... this album is most definitely one of the best rap album released this year... 9/10 FAV SONGS: 20KARAT JESUS, PHONE LIT, HOMESICK, ANDREA, AMNESIA
i'm a huge freddie gibbs fan and i feel the same way, the production is pretty repetitive and boring and freddie sounds more like he's freestyling than writing full fledged songs. shadow of a doubt was way better
Very balanced and understandable review. Seems like Freddie was just anxious to get back in the game. I'm just happy he's back. He'll get back on his shit.
Havent been feeling his last few albums like that but im still looking forward to the album he has coming with madlib hopefully later this year #Bandana
PLEASEEEE review Dan Auerbach's first solo album, Keep It Hid! his second one just got announced and it'll be interesting to see how the two albums compare.
totally agree that some lines are over-stuffed with syllables and it throws off some flows. i really think its a consistent release sonically and lyrically. a meditative/retrospective release that feels like it was mostly written while locked up. as a really big gibbs fan thats exactly what i wanted with his first release before he releases more thugged out stuff on bandana. i really like the strained delivery when he does it. only real complaint is some tracks dont seem mixed too well, like andrea and amnesia. drums are too loud there imo.
Freddie Gibbs is still the most underrated rapper out. Even this album which was definitely rushed is still so enjoyable. In a decade of 20 fucking song albums, this 8 song 32 minute album is fucking a breath of fresh air.
i felt like he rushed to release this project because of all that went on. still a decently good project. Not as aggressive as SOD or pinata but still good lyrics, production and flow. predicted a 6/10. excited for Bandana and any of his future projects.
I partly agree with this review. I too missed a stronger hook on crushed glass, I think that would have made the track a lot better without him changing his verses. I don't think he has exhausted the atmospheric trap sound. Strong 6 - light 7.
It wasn't the most solid of albums but there were some great moments. Honestly I'm just glad to be hearing from Gibbs again. Hopefully Bandana is still on the rails for release in the near future.
This is one of my favourite Gibbs albums tbh, this and baby face killa, it's purely just him with dope beats behind him and bars on bars on bars. I almost feel like on piñata the beats and instrumentals took away from his rawness that makes him stand out, like he would never work with Tom Misch or hiatus kaiyote or anything because they just don't mix, rather than adding they just take away a what makes him him.
Agree with everything you said, Shadow of a doubt was a classic IMO (and contender for AOTY) and very hard to live up to that with only an 8 track album.
This really disappointed me. After the rape controversy I expected him to come back with something hard and gritty, a bit like pac did. But this was just meh, middle of the road
man so glad you dropped this! I almost had to form my own opinion
Hahaha
Dylan McMahon people who form their own opinions are stupid af, only melons understand good music
DihStyle69 i exclusively rate albums on a melon metric. the highest possible score is a King Kendrick/10, the lowest is a Kid Corey Cancer/10
Dylan McMahon Ikr.Thank god for the melon
I used 2 trust flamedango til I saw his hiatus kaiyote review
The 2nd half of 20 Karat Jesus>>>>>>>>>
Zach Williams the first half had all the good songs lmao
He meant the actual song
Zach Williams it was fucking heavenly bro, great choir’s sample really
don't let this distract you from the fact that caillou beefed with post malone
anthony would be what happened when caillou grew up
Kona Kai long story short Post Malone dissed Anthony and his fans on twitter.
Kona Kai heard he beefed with Chelsea Clinton as well
They buried that shit. He talked about it on one of the best of/worst of videos, that he may not like his whitegirlturnupmusic, but that Post was a decent guy.
Who's caliou?
he's just saving the best for bandana, this was just a warm up np
DihStyle69 I hope so bro
DihStyle69 I feel the same way, probably just a set up EP for Bandana
Lmao bandana still isn't out.
You right
bandana ended up being near-perfect
It almost sounds like he would have given it a 7 or 8 if Piñata didn't exist.
Exactly why are we judging it based on Freddie's catalogue instead of music as a whole
@@gaj7062 I mean you're right but you can still feel like "well its good but i feel like i've heard this before
The flow on crushed glass is Pac like
God like
this is at least an 8 in my book. Not his best collection of songs but they bump and he was rapping his ass off.
but... he would sound better on some Madlib Production #Bandana😈🔥
Kode B while i agree im just tired of newer fans comparing everything he does to Pinata. That's the great thing about Freddie is his versatility. Trap, boom bap, jazzy/soul. He has something for damn near every type of hiphop fan

Leoven u gay
I can't stop playing Alexys
Alexys is a million times better than humble, Kendrick went too damn repetitive
Short Donovan That's what happens when you make a radio hit. It has to be a little repetitive
nowadays kendrick's farts would be considered conscious rap
Sure Good kid and TPAB are good but not classics, Criminal Minded and The Chronic are classics, mostly stuff of the 90's are classics, nowadays stakes are too damn low
Short Donovan GKMC and TPAB will be classics
Although I really dig the album I understand Fantano's criticisms on it. I'm glad he put this one out.
Skyedogg lol this has been out for 4 minutes and the video is 8 minutes stop lying
Don't gotta see the number at the end to hear Fantano's criticism homie.
I dig this album too and can understand why Fantano think this isn't up to par with Freddie's last album but I think he was overly critical on this one. This album is far from being inconsistent and over the place. He manage to keep a theme throughout the album and the production was cohesive with the exception of maybe one track.
Skyedogg same
Skyedogg just gotta be vague as fuck
I loved the album. Really came from freddies heart and he told a story he wanted to tell. I know it was short but he had a story to tell and he did it with a shorter runtime instead of throwing on filler tracks like some do.
We need Piñata 2
TRIGGΞRMΔͶ水GOKU anther project with madlib was announced called Bandana but that was before he got locked so I dunno what's happening with that now
TRIGGΞRMΔͶ水GOKU
Bandana coming soon 💯💯💯
TRIGGΞRMΔͶ水GOKU no just leave it we don't need a new pinata the first one is good enough
his manager recently posted a photo on Twitter of an iPod with a bunch of Madlib beats, so I think it's still happening
Yeah, Viva La Pinata was a cool game
Freddie needs to take bigger risks on the instrumentals. The beats on Pinata and Str8 Killa compliment his versatility so well, throw in a few trap bangers and you have one hell of a combo. There were some good tracks off this record no doubt, but I agree with Fandangus and can't wait for Bandana!
themohcod Piñata was great, Madlib's production made it amazing
what's wrong with the beats on this album, I thought they were dope
SE Royal I really enjoyed Alexys and Crushed glass, but stylistically I thought these beats were very similar to the bulk of SOAD, seems to be Freddie's comfort zone. I just would have liked to have seen a little more variety from an MC who's killed beats from Kay, Statik, and Madlib alike.
themohcod ok I feel u, you just want him be more versatile with his beats
Is it just me or does this guy look like thatistheplan?
Mats Nan hahhahahhahahahhahahahahhahha
Mats Nan Stale jokes
Definitely just you. Sure, they may sound similar, but this guy looks like a fucking melon.
Ike D but you gotta admit, they do look a like, especially that fucked hairline.
Ike D Anthony looks like a honeydew, thatistheplan man looks like a cantaloupe
20 Karat Jesus is one of his best songs, also Alexys and Amnesia are insaneee
Freddie Gibbs is one of the most underrated rappers in the game. He's been around awhile, but it seems like people sleep on him a lot...
So this is 6/6 and TPAB is a 01/01...Wtf is wrong with you melon?
what
bad
it's a meme that needs to die because it was never funny
If Kendrick dropped this album Anthony would've gave it a 10
Edward Velazco nope trust me this nigga holds his.... ideas hard..
20 Karat Jesus is my favorite song and Homesick is really honest. I'd give it like a 7/10. Still excited for Bandana.
Amnesia is my favorite track on this project, surprised Fantano didn't say much about it
I'm glad you've finally come out of the Cailloset
"Caillou here." I'm glad he finally manned up to admitting it
This album straight fire this man is completely buggin😭😭 each song a different story and you don't need to be a dope dealer to relate to his shit, although i don't care too much about phone lit also lmaooooo
I personally thought it was better than shadow of a doubt...that being said BANDANA IS WHAT I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TOO!!
I don't give a fuck what you say Phone lit was the hardest track on that album
Y'all are sleepin on this heaaaavvvvvyyyyyyyy
Freddie Lives
I think Gibbs is just letting us know he's still alive. The next record will be fire.
A 10/10 wow was there a Kendrick Lamar feature?
I love this Freddie Gibbs album. I thought you would give it a strong 7 or 8.
I think this album is very strong lyrically and sonically on almost all the songs. The length doesn't concern me. dude Phone Lit is my favorite tho even tho it's the least lyrical - that shit would kill in the club
Madlib really made Pinata one of the best hip hop records of the decade so far. I don't think Gibbs could even come close to that success without him.
Comments that aged horrible exhibit one
This comment aged like milk
Bandana and Alfredo exist and arguably almost on the same level as Piñata. Piñata is still his best album though
Im excited for the Pinata sequel "Bandana". They announced that it will be released 2017, but they might push it back a bit.
Yeah its coming this year a bit late on their part
Let me defend Phone Lit because I feel the need to.
If you take into consideration how Freddie was spending his time behind bars, you will understand the importance of him dedicating an entire track to how he felt having a phone again and finally having the freedom to talk to or sleep with his woman. Solid review!
Fantano
Hitting it again torturing Mastodon fans

Glasses, baldhead, best teeth. Call me glasses, baldhead, best teeth man.
Caillou opening had me in tears...

You Only Live 2wice = 09/10
What even. This album is comfortably his best work since Pinata, and has some of the best tracks he's ever made on it. 8/10.
liked this for Caillou
Fuck this. It's a 9/10 for me.
you bettter be releasing the kodak review soon
Okay, I'm going to sleep now and when i wake that goddamn Emperor of sand review better be uploaded
Come oooooooooooooooooooooooonnn! Give us MASTODON!
100% agree tbf hes still in my contemporary top 5 but felt this was just a bit rushed (sort of understandably)
Absolutely love this project and I’m not the biggest fan of Gibbs. I think it’s length lent it strength. No clutter, no filler, production was 💯
LORD FREDDIE 🔥🙏 one of the best projects of the year
Blank Face FAX
nah
Blank Face facts
nah
You like this shit? because I expect more from my nigga. He can rap his ass off but he just didn't show it on this album
Appreciate your opinion, I'd say this is much better in my opinion though. Alexys is ridiculous, and rhyming past the bar line isn't an issue to me as many emcees do it for extra punch, and the lyrics are fire. Still, each to their own.

Jesus Christ this comment section
3 rappers that Anthony Fantano totally overlooked this year:
Smino, J.I.D, Wifisfuneral
Low ass rating Fantano... this album is most definitely one of the best rap album released this year...
9/10
FAV SONGS: 20KARAT JESUS, PHONE LIT, HOMESICK, ANDREA, AMNESIA
Why do y'all think a 6 is bad? It's slightly above average and enjoyable
"Hey everyone, Caillou here" *changes Caillou to Cal* LET HIM OUT OF THE BASEMENT MELONMAN
One of my favorite albums to drop this year. Great music to pull up to
i'm a huge freddie gibbs fan and i feel the same way, the production is pretty repetitive and boring and freddie sounds more like he's freestyling than writing full fledged songs. shadow of a doubt was way better
Phone lit is my favorite song on the album
I think it's a solid comeback Album. Definitely not his best, but by your grading scale I'd go strong 6 to a light 7
Very balanced and understandable review. Seems like Freddie was just anxious to get back in the game. I'm just happy he's back. He'll get back on his shit.
Andrea is my favorite track. The beat just kinda gives off mysterious vibes to me.
Strong 6 was a fair review. I enjoyed the album re listened quite a few times
totally agree that some lines are over-stuffed with syllables and it throws off some flows. i really think its a consistent release sonically and lyrically. a meditative/retrospective release that feels like it was mostly written while locked up. as a really big gibbs fan thats exactly what i wanted with his first release before he releases more thugged out stuff on bandana. i really like the strained delivery when he does it. only real complaint is some tracks dont seem mixed too well, like andrea and amnesia. drums are too loud there imo.
Yeah, i agree with your review
I feel like anthony does not have the ability to feel the atmospheric vibe on freddie's hooks.
this comment section has entered fallout stage: nothing but a dead meme toxic weastland of comments.
He's saving himself for "Bandana"!
Freddie Gibbs is still the most underrated rapper out. Even this album which was definitely rushed is still so enjoyable. In a decade of 20 fucking song albums, this 8 song 32 minute album is fucking a breath of fresh air.
Ay man, you gon review the new Mastodon album?
Dude really ?? Amnesia?? Crushed glass? He is rapping bars fast but they go right over your head obviously.. Freddie is one of the best rappers around
*sees dislike bar*
*rubs hands together in excitement*
I love hearing melon say "freddie". so crisp
I still prefer Pinata to this album but it was a decent return to form. Check out our review if you have time!
i felt like he rushed to release this project because of all that went on. still a decently good project.
Alexys is fire. I think when he falls off the beat a little, and then slaps back into the grid, he come off more urgent and candid.
I thought this album was flames, and a very strong return.
anthony looks like my grandma
seriously? you gave Gangsta Gibbs a 2/10??
i gave it a 7. it was a bit too short for me but it was solid IMO. a filler til we get the next MadGibbs collab.
cleanliness of the rhyme scheme
It wasn't the most solid of albums but there were some great moments. Honestly I'm just glad to be hearing from Gibbs again. Hopefully Bandana is still on the rails for release in the near future.
Crushed Glass is so fkin hard, favorite jawn on the EP.
I love Gibbs but wasnt really feeling this one too much. Probably my favorite gangster rapper currently at it.
Unfortunately Phone Lit is my favorite track 😂
homesick still one of the best freddie songs imo
lol caillou doing the voice cracking is hilarious 3:30
You should make a review on Tesseract's album Solid State... It would be great to hear your review on that album.
What??? i normally agree and respect what you say, But this was a Good Project
Never thought I'd see the day Anthony referring to himself as Caillou during a review... Times are changing
Agree with everything you said, Shadow of a doubt was a classic IMO (and contender for AOTY) and very hard to live up to that with only an 8 track album.
Was straight fire for me, 9/10 no bad tracks, best one would be Amnesia by a hair
This really disappointed me. After the rape controversy I expected him to come back with something hard and gritty, a bit like pac did. But this was just meh, middle of the road
@theneedledrop should review the newly arrived Memoriam - For The Fallen album featuring ex-bolt thrower members.
what are your thoughts on amnesia??? the best song on the album in terms of sound for sure
I think if he disabled his comments section absolutely nothing of value would be lost
Freddie Corleone
