I am *so glad* you’re covering Kon’s work. I’ve never personally watched his movies, but the messages Kon tries to display about humanity have always captured my interest when I read about them.
There's definitely a tension between being our authentic self and a caricature to uphold that Prefect Blue really drills down at, like you stated. I went to my 10 year high school reunion last year and felt awkward being upheld as super smart, which made me feel stiff, while I can be more myself with the friends I made in college. It's a challenge to redefine yourself but very rewarding if you can do so successfully.
He is literally the first animation director that I saw something he did (perfect Blue) and then proceeded to watch the rest of his stuff that I had access to because I think perfect blue is probably my 2nd favorite piece of anime in general and honestly I think the best psych thriller in existence. I loved this movie so much and everything he does is amazing
Hes one of the greats for a reason! A one of one director that we’ll never see another of. Even with everything I had seen before, his mark was left for me immediately when I first watched PB and Paprika.
I have only watched Perfect Blue once, and I am in no rush to watch it again. It is not because it is a bad film, but it is very disturbing. However I love the message behind the film and how Kon presented it. In 2024, Perfect Blue is extremely relevant.
wonderful analysis. I really like the approach that you took with this video compared to others that i’ve seen. I know you’re just covering the movies for now, but if you ever get a chance I would love a vid on paranoia agent. it’s a true masterpiece imo. Anyways, great vid can’t wait for more :)

His work has always been fascinating to me. I’m glad to finally be covering it!
Perfect Blue is up there as one of my favorite horror anime.
As for my favorite Satoshi Kon film, I'm still thinking about it.
Same here. Still debating if it’s my favorite lol. It changes a lot.

Have you read any of Kon’s manga? I recently read Opus and enjoyed it. Satoshi Kon was a genius. Looking forward to more videos in the series.
Haven’t yet, but I’ll add them to my reading list!
Opus is a masterpiece I honestly had no idea Satoshi Kon wrote it wow

I do plan on covering Paranoia Agent actually! Might take a bit longer to do than the film analysis videos though 😭
