I moved the plates and the bowls up one level in my dish cabinet, and made room at the bottom level for the countertop items we reach for everyday, like the coffee, tea, sugar jar, butter dish and the honey. I worried it might seem too much like a hotel kitchen, but everyone in the house seems to like the new setup so I'm going with it!
I am also team 'no coffee table'. I always see beautiful coffee tables online and have to resist buying one because we just don't need one. I find not having one keeps our living room feeling much more open and spacious :)
I have a problem with the visual clutter on my desk in my office. It's a dumping ground. I have a Ring doorbell that needs to be installed, packet of satin pillowcases, 2 bags of quarters, a new sponge, gloves, jar of paint brushes, a hat (that's not mine), a sweatshirt, a pack of toothbrushes, multiple Land's End brochures, photo albums, a stack of Christmas cards that didn't get put away, and much more. You get the idea. I'm going to deal with each item today because all I see is an overwhelming mess. Thanks for the advice Shannon. Love MOM
I committed to a minimal color pallette in our living room. It is navy, gray, white and green (because of actual plants) This is a calm color pallette and the room feels peaceful which motivates me to keep it clean and clutter free. Also white has a feeling of clean as well. When I buy seasonal decorations, I try to get them in all white or white with blue. They blend in and I can honor that season without adding a ton of visual clutter. I notice I struggle when a room has too much visual clutter! It's hard to relax. The first time I heard someone use that word was probably 5 years ago and it put a name to the anxiety I felt in my home. Now I binge watch minimalist youttube videos and try to use their ideas without going to far towards minimalism
I finally bought a kindle and I linked it to my local library. I’m saving so much money on books and I’ve been able to clear a few shelves of books and pass them on. Feels good!
I only own about 20 books. My kid and spouse are a different story. I am in the middle of reading a 21 book series and have spent $0 reading books from the library.
I've started removing labels (or decanting) from things like hand soap, hand lotion, dish detergent, etc. on counter containers. anything labeled that causes brain clutter is gone on items on the counter, which are few. It has made my bath and kitchen counters so much more peaceful. Keeping these items corralled on a tray helps too.
I love the no-label look. But I don't love the "mystery" that follows. More than once, I've had a guest end up washing their hands with lotion, and follow up with the soap, then wonder why their hands are sticky. Lol. So, I ended up using my label maker to clear things up. Seemed to contradict the original purpose... But it still looks more cohesive and visually simplified than the original packaging.
I try to make the rooms in my home as simple as possible. I only like minimal home decor and I make sure it's something I love. I can't have a lot out anyway due to 2.5 year old twins that get into everything! I am not where I want to be in my declutter or minimalism but it has helped me a lot to move all the excess to one area of my home (the basement in bins and on storage shelves) and to know which rooms are finished for now. I try to clear off counter tops and tables even if it means putting a pile of papers in a drawer that I have to take care of later, then I don't have to see it sitting out. I make notes to myself on the fridge white board or lists on paper so I don't forget. My home is hardly prefect but I have made a lot of progress because of RUclipsrs like you that I have followed for a long time. Thanks so much Shannon for these helpful tips and for all your videos. You really do make an impact in people's lives.
I don't have a lot of flat surfaces to set stuff on. Got rid of some display cabinets and shelves. Also, we pretend our attic doesn't exist, as in we don't store anything up there besides our xmas tree. If you think of it as storage space, you will fill it up.
Shannon, I have been reading that the world economy is undergoing a major shift towards restainable goods and services. People in your age category are its driving source; so thank you for sharing products and concepts that both embrace and instruct. Loved the drop zone idea for my husband's pocket clutter! Elizabeth
Thank you Elizabeth, We are trying our best to be eco friendly. I hope it makes a difference because our environment is in danger. That drop zone has helped my husband to forget things less often. =) I hope you are doing well.
Really great tips!! I am a mama of 7 and I HAVE to keep things tidy and less visual distractions just for my mental health! It keeps me so much calmer! I have a couple of pieces of large, very detailed art...but it is gorgeous and calm colors and it takes my breath away each time i look at it! I think searching for art that literally takes my breath away has helped it to not be a background distraction for me...it becomes an inspiration! Thanks for all you do!
I have been looking at my coffee table for years thinking "why is this still here"? Now its going up on marketplace..i just love these ideas..Thank you!
I love you and your channel.Everything is so amazing but the 3 pictures by the dining table do not match the rest of your home. Its an eye catcher and throws me off.But literally everything else is beautiful.Keep going I look for you everyday.
Love this video. So many ideas. I'm moving from a huge property, huge house, inground pool and small renter cottage...to downsizing to my forever home. I'm 58 years old. Less than 1100 square feet. I especially love your living room. I will have a very long wall, so I love your t.v. and built ins. Also I think I'll do away with coffee table because living room is very small. So much helpful advice. Thank you.
I don't use my attic for storage because, in my experience, it's way too hot here in south Texas for things to survive well in that space. I store holiday things in the guest room closet and I use a one-in, one-out method to manage that closet (and other closets as well).
I agree on the visual clutter. I try to go with one focal point to avoid an overwhelming situation! When my son was diagnosed with an asd diagnosis I tried to be more functional than beautiful. It's a hard balance ⚖️! 😊
Hi Christine! I agree it is a hard balance, we are actually thinking of switching out the light colored chairs in our living room because they are just not kid friendly LOL. I hope you are having a good day.
@@shannontorrens1 I have a forest green couch that looks like the same material as your two chairs. I have a hard time keeping that fabric clean. I can understand with the lighter colors. My interior of my car is light. Doesn't work well with a teen boy! 😉
@@cmck2021 my son has autism as well and between his vision making him clumsy and the visual environment affecting his moods, my leaning towards what was necessary became necessary for him to live safe in our home. For instance, for safety I do not have floor or table lamps, no end tables or coffee tables. All furniture is placed in such a way that if he was running or not paying attention, corners are soft (puffy arm couch) and clear wide paths in the house. In turn, the minimal approach to furniture is way more peaceful
About two weeks ago I took the pillows and throw blankets off my furniture and it makes a Huge difference!! Thank You for the awesome tips Shannon! I love your channel
Great tips Shannon! I also don't like visual clutter. Although I do like to use decor, blankets, and pillows to make my home feel cozy! I try to be intentional with what comes into my home. I also like to use white matching bins in all of my cabinets to make it look streamlined. I use glass jars and plastic bins to store food items to get rid of all of the packaging too! Thanks for sharing! I always enjoy your videos!😊💗
Great video as always Shannon! We too are coffee table free and enjoy it so much! I also recently keep my 2 sofa throw pillows in a hall closet and only bring them out as needed. Have a great day😊
Great video 🙂 we sold our coffee table and bought a smaller side table ,husband needs the room for his wheelchair, we don’t miss it . I wish I had a place to put some of the small appliances ,it does look clutter. I love watching your videos, thank you .
Your home looks great! Thanks for sharing all your wisdom! I need to work on my visual clutter and find a way to bring more cohesiveness. Each room is pretty bare and I don't know how to create areas that are needed, like shelves, to display decor and also remain minimalist. My mom told me that my house doesn't have much personality. 😬 Help!
Haha you can build personality over time, my mom told me that when we first became minimalist too. She tole me my home looks bare, I look back in old videos and I think she was right. But there is a good balance and sometimes having a bare home for a while let's us decide what we really want on our walls. =)
To me plants are a great way to add something to a room without bringing more "stuff" in the room, add some books and a few pieces of art or pictures to add some personality. Take your time to find things that you love!
All great tips. I covered our dog's bed with a sheet the same color as the floor so it blends with the floor and is less noticeable. BTW, have your boys ever asked you for a pet? Just wondering why you don't have a dog or cat or something.
Hi, Great tip on covering the dog bed. Yes they have asked for a cat, but we live in an area where there are wild coyotes and bears and I my husband is against having only an inside animal. I think when they get a little older and can take care of an animal we might get a dog.
We don't have a coffee table either. A couple times a day, usually when doing chores in the morning and after dinner, take a quick run through our home, and anything left out put it away.
Have you done a video on how you care for your plants Shannon? I like your minimalist home the best of all the channels I sub to on this topic.. as you have plants featured, and this makes it look so much more inviting in my opinion. I would like to do the same.. however I am wondering if I would need to carry them outside everyday to get some proper sunlight.. as we have verandahs on both sides of our house.. (living in rural Australia.. that is the go..)
Hi Nicole! I try to get plants that don't need a lot of light. While we do get some light a lot of our home is dark. I might do a plant tour in the future. =)
I also like to use clear for anything I can.....a clear side table lamp is much less visual than a lamp made of other material😁 also I got rid of some plants. Sometimes u can have too many.
