Thanks for a great video. My own tip: Last spring during quarantine, I became interested in house plants and bought tons of them to bring in a sense of aliveness to my home. Then during the fall, I discovered minimalism and have slowly been making my way around my home, creating calmer and more functioning spaces. This weekend I moved a bunch of house plants outside a covered porch, and my indoor spaces suddenly seem so much calmer, even though they were already pretty clutter-free. I do love my plants, but I really have to admit that when there are too many of them, they raise my anxiety -- and they're a lot of work!

Agreed! 3 years ago I moved to a place with a large loungeroom and lots of light. HELLOOO house plants. It got out of control. But in that time I've developed a knack for plants and designing particularly beautiful house plant ideas which I have kept. The rest of the plants I've sold or given away. Now a far more aesthetically pleasing environment and less work!

As I teeter the line between decorated and minimalism, I have noticed a few things. I love the look of both minimalist and maximalist space, BUT I love the FEEL of minimal spaces. So I’ve been trying to combine them by making maximalism my aesthetic (colors, textures, prints) but making minimalism my practice. So I just cleared my sofa of all extra decorative cushions because they actually drove me crazy and made the room messy too easily (especially with kids!). It immediately made a huge difference! I am also doing away with rugs (at least during warmer months), as it is easier to clean and take care of. I’m going to continue this path of trying to just clear surfaces and only decorate with things that I use.
I've been working towards minimalism now for about 8 years. Definitely a journey and process. I feel so much lighter, organized, and just less complicated...over all a feeling of balance and well being. Your home looks very Scandi, which is my favorite and the overall goal I'm trying to obtain in my own home...not by purchasing more, but by keeping less.

Combining my love for eclectic with a desire for a calming environment....
Although I have loved an eclectic look for a long time (think 'english cozy study' meets 'archaeologist' meets 'scandi' meets 'asian vintage''....), the last few years I've been minimising and wanting something a bit more calming to rest my eyes on. Some things that have enabled me to combine my love for eclectic style with minimalism have been:
- putting glass doors on my bookcases which reduces dust, but somehow the books being behind glass reduces the visual clutter - they aren't so much 'in your face'!? And, matching the bookcase and wall colour (in my case, both white)
- since I love vintage trinkets, but don't like dusting, I've found that collecting a few under a glass dome/cloche makes it seem more cohesive, and cuts down on both dusting and visual clutter. I've placed them under 2 vintage style glass domes. Now it looks much calmer, and a bit like a 19thc museum/art installation...and I just need to give the glass dome a swipe with a duster now and then!

I enjoy your videos. Good tips. I look back to a time when people had less money and spent on items that were handmade and craftsmanship was important. Furniture that was meant to last through generations. I think it would be good to get back to supporting local makers and quality long lasting goods. I didn't have the budget to buy new furniture when I moved into my home so I mainly have second hand (but still good) couches, beds etc. I picked up items from hard rubbish like a vintage wooden chair, vintage 60s side table etc. I actually like it better because has a tad more personality.
Now I just add paintings and photos by friends and family, plants, and a few family heirlooms.

I have side tables for the comfort of having somewhere to sit a drink. I refuse to have a coffee table because I see no purpose in having one. I give myself "zones". One table top is full of beautiful things, layers of things, but most of my table tops are completely clear at all times. This strikes a good balance for me. I love the Layered look of a Maximalist home but strive for clean and uncluttered space as well. I am learning to curate my possesions. Enjoyed the video and enjoy seeing your lovely home.

My cats dictate my minimalism 😂 all surfaces have to be clear or else they will do it themselves. And side tables and and coffee tables are a spill hazard for drinks so they are a no go.
Maximalist ... is that a thing? I must be a maximalist, but moving in the direction of minimalism (will never get there). Is there a medialist for medium?
Love this! Simple yet great tips. I come from a generation of "stuff" and handed down from generations when the next generation in my house thinks its silly and doesn't want any of it. Made great sense that it will one day probably given away.

Other great designers are Julie Khuu and Kathy Holt. Julie does feng shui and Kathy is a traditional designer that speaks her mind but is very professional, which is appreciate.
My only thought contrary to your list is that from an artistic perspective there really are no conflicting colors. My only gripe with minimal decor is the "fear" of color. My colors are bold, varied, and very intentional. Most importantly, color makes me happy.

Great points Elin. As usual. Another streamlining idea is to address simplified window coverings that are minimal, yet functional. I recently saved up (not cheap) for shutters on some of my windows, and the cleaning/maintenance is also minimal. And hopefully, it's a classic, long-lasting look.

I have a cleaning ritual where I do the dishes every morning while my coffee is cooking (I drink cowboy coffee : P ). I didn't used to have regular cleaning rituals but now i'm glad I do.
Great Tips! Cords get my attention & it's worth the effort to hide or place wisely. If they must be seen in certain areas (like as simple as my electrical toothbrush or diffuser) I like to make sure the cord is at least able to hang straight down or neatly across & not diagonally.

Love this. I have learned so many tools. And while I know them….. and keep bringing myself back to implementing them I love listening to your ideas for motivation. Keeps me on track. Keeps me motivated. I have found that the less I have the more what I do have looks high end. Love you polishing the leaves!!! It’s the little things that people can’t put a finger on that makes things looks so polished. And less means that when you do clean you can go right to cleaning without having to put things away and feeling overwhelmed. ❤️❤️❤️

"Clutter" is ~ a space:objects mismatch. Iff folks legitimately need the stuff remaining after being forced (various reasons) to downsize their sq ft, how to streamline the appearance + optical illusions to make area seem more spacious is the advice these folks need.
I'm very glad that the minimalism movement has generated so many helpful videos, yet am still a bit frustrated by what feels like a narrow perspective offered by so many young vloggers. What I mean by this is the recurrent assumption that a LOT of storage space is unnecessary, that everything can be replaced by buying new items to replace the old, and esp if walls & surfaces are to be left clear.
Parents, esp, need places to store many items.
How to integrate a LOT of storage (incl for renters who can't use space behind sheetrock or under floors belonging to landlord) into a design plan IS harder, yet addresses the reality many viewers live in. Thank you.

I very much appreciate the honor you have to home decor at the end. I’m inspired to give the decor I have more credit and respect. My grandmother did not have much and made a point of changing things around, making fake flower arrangements etc to beautify her home and I have so much respect for that now that I have a home and she is no longer here.

Exactly, but I am also a fan of smaller rooms. Most of the videos I watch (especially from the US) have crazy big rooms and I just keep wondering why. Some master bedrooms are almost as big as my whole apartment (55 square meters), for example. Then if you have the basics it will feel big enough :)

Last week I took down two pictures from the wall behind and above the sofa and the wall looked so bare, so I put them back up. Now I hear your suggestion #7 and struggle what to do.

I have been using True Earth detergent for 2 years and it’s Great! So much lighter than those jugs and a v good choice for people with sensitive skin. For cables I use Sleek Socket ultra-thin electrical outlet covers and white cable boxes or baskets to hide the strips, if they don’t fit behind furniture.

Two of your points resonated with me, one being two many pieces of furniture and the other being too many things on the wall. I grew up with 2 bulky dressers and a closet (why idk) and now at 24 I've sold a dresser and only hang items that need it ( I prefer not to iron and my closet isn't the most functional). Also when I came home from graduating college a couple years ago, my mom had filled 3 of the empty walls in our living room with those hobby lobby type phrases and random shelves to hold random vases 😅. I only have control over my room so I do what I can
I started using Kind laundry squares this year, and just got my second box of 60 - they work great! I mix aTbsp of borax into a quart of warm water, (antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal!) and add about 1/3 cup per load
Girl I just want your home one day 😭 my dream. I’ve just moved into a one bedroom apartment with my boyfriend and chosen the boho type of style (lots of clay colours- beige, browns, reds, peaches) which I do like but I’m nervous if I keep putting up the things I’ve bought that it’ll make the space look cluttered. My environment felt more peaceful just listening to your video. :) I love your "rule" about horizontal surfaces and decor. I have really minimized my decor to be very meaningful pieces that are larger and it has made a HUGE difference in how I feel about my space. I also put my remotes in a basket, which helped me feel like they belong in my home and removed the clutter feeling they can create. It definitely feels more minimal.
I enjoy the videos where you discuss science. I’ve wondered if our need to belong makes us want to buy more to fit in. Also, I have noticed when people have a problem they seem to think they can buy something to fix the problem. My grandmother did this and my husband does this. What do you think about these two observations?
Really interesting points! I honestly think that buying or collecting might serve different functions depending on the person, but I definitely think both of these (the desire to belong/fit in or buying things to fix a problem) can definitely happen! I think it's super wise to try to figure out what that function is for each of us, so that we bring more awareness to it. :)

The key word you use is “streamline”. This is more doable then “declutter”! For most of us it is the worst action we can be reminded of. Streamline embraces the idean for me that I am opening up to moving in making my home with the excess that truly at times have not been touched for a huge period of time. By the time you use it the manual is misplace to a “new and improved” is out there. The furniture was a huge shift with as you not “we are suppose “ to have them. For me everyone is in the dinning room , back patio to kitchen. The battle is with teens and my own spouse. Common areas are so fair game with them too. Spaces open up and then sports equipment find a new home! So working on their space to keep an empty area in their closet to dump their book bags.

For people ~ 60 or over, who are not only downsizing rental home sq footage, but also budget, replacing existing furniture that works well for storage by buying storage may not be an option. Alas, furniture that had looked great when in separate rooms, can be quite mismatched when side-by-side in a smaller space. Abundant bookshelves & new renter-friendly hooks contribute to the appearance of clutter, yet getting rid of everything may deprive a retired person of finally being able to have over-the-counter meds, tools, sewing & a wide variety of materials for mending, indulging hobbies (whether for fun, sport, travel, camping, music, jewelry-making, art, or for saving money by diy-ing gifts, new clothes, Etc.) ... and still want space for annual X-mas tree, folding chairs for guests, minimal every-day cookware yet some extra in case of guests, bedding/towels in case of guests, Etc..
Point being, could you/would you start a playlist (to populate between other videos over time) dedicated to decorating ideas that start out with the assumption that you audience had already downsized belongings (your other vids address that), and offer advice on how to make what they have look uncluttered & pretty (range of styles).
Ex: painting furniture; standardizing knobs; removable self-adhesive wall decals &/or faux trim, vinyl flooring, contact paper for cabinets, decor- integrated hooks, mirrors, Etc.; covering open shelving with mirrored hinged doors, curtains with or w/out looking like a photo of expansive space or optical illusion, or just painting the shelf itself to match the wall +/- diy matching book covers, Etc.; How to "keep" wall-hangings of family photos & pictures (Ex: Grandmother's hand- painted) without looking cluttered via options like cabinet designed for hanging photos or hanging on walls but in clusters of matching frames +/- using technology to scan & resize for hanging or decoupage or transfer to lampshades, or print onto fabric for curtains, quilts, throw-pillows, Etc.; how to diy changes to upholstery/ cushion covers on sofas &/or chairs via fabric paints, dyes, adding fabric (cheap, or from thrift shop, or diy decorations onto plain-colored sheets or "other"), decorative upholstery nails, appliques, Etc.; painting containers (whether reusable or disposable); wrapping items using various paper or fabric or "other" to blend w/decor; give examples of how repurposing some common recyclables can provide materials for decorating; sources for purchasing cheap materials that can be repurposed (not just thrift shops & junk outlets, but also free samples, retailers one might not think of such as price & quality of jewelry vs fishing tackle organizers or flooring for diy tarp gazebo from hardware store vs animal supply or cannibalizing hinges & drawers & latches & lumber & handles & casters & glass & knobs & mirrors & feet & upholstery fabric & cushions & shelves & Etc. from junk furniture or stacking used file cabinets vs dressers (or tool boxes) +/- sideways drawers in top for shelves ; diy adhesives & pigment; minimal "carpentry" accents using around-the-house objects as tools or using tools from the dollar store Etc.; Diy misc like tie-dye that isn't too psychedelic, batik, hole-punch cans for decorative candles/vases/pencil holders; simple daisy chain patterns for crochet accents; glass etching and staining; cheap ways to get glazed clay baked in a kiln & stuff easy custom ceramics can enhance as decor; making nets from rope (for drying racks, hook supports, hammock-style storage, hammocks, Etc., esp if with shell/beach/ocean/nautical/tropical theme decor); diy suspended lighting vs lamps consuming horizontal space (Ex: using a basket whether right-side up or down as the lamp shade, then running the wire from the bulb (from broken lamp or new from hardware store w/ or w/out in-line switch) through a hanging chain cut-to-size ... whether that stops wherever the shade is suspended from or to where a chain continues to floor level or maybe all the way to where the wire meets an outlet) ; Diy ways to create self-supporting (or supported by tenant-owned furniture) frames or rods that will provide a way to mount or suspend heavy things without drilling into apartment walls;
review "cut-to-size" options common chain stores offer for glass & sheet metal & lumber & trim strips + ways to use these as shelves, protection of walls, frames, table covers, Etc.; How to integrate "go packs" (waterproof lightweight portable emergency evac pack/s that can be strapped to one's back &/or waist &/or hung from a shoulder to carry 72° of survival supplies incl documents & photos printed &/or digital);
AND "fun with hinges" & gliders & elastic & velcro & latches & bearings & locking casters for making/converting things into portable &/or multifunction &/or collapsible &/or foldable &/or swivel &/or concealed &/or adding optional extra support legs Etc. for stuff like drop-leaf table, fold down (or up, w/latch) seats &/or tables &/or barrister-style or secretary-style shelf doors, converting dining chair into folding chair, sliders for bottom or multi-shelving inside cabinets or under closet shelves, converting cabinet door on owned furniture into a folding door if it sicks out too far otherwise, making folding room dividers; and so on (mostly for modifying existing owned items).

Sometimes when you go very minimalist, you get an echo in rooms...especially if you don't have carpet or rugs or if there is a lot of tile. How can that be overcome?

I would add , get rid of some little area rugs and runners and door mats , I had so many , hallways , by the doors , kitchen , etc , they get warn and shift around and add to visual clutter , I eliminated most
