  • The Whitby, Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway (WRMU) was built between 1871 and 1886, running from Loftus on the Yorkshire coast to the Esk at Whitby, and connecting Middlesbrough to Whitby along the coast. The route from Loftus to Whitby included five steel viaducts, all of which have been demolished, and three tunnels. The line south of Saltburn was closed in 1958, but the section from Saltburn via Loftus to Boulby potash mine, one mile west of Staithes, re-opened to freight in 1970 and remains in use. Here we trace the course of the former WRMU in a simulated fly-through between Whitby Town station and the start of the exiisting line at Boulby. Yellow graphics and text denote dismantled lines, closed stations and other features, and pale grey graphics and white text are used for existing track and stations. Sections of trackbed which are rights of way are shown in green, together with connecting paths.
Satellite imagery dates from 19/4/2023 and15/5/2023, and the video was prepared using Google Earth. Route locations and historical details were obtained from Rail Map Online and National Library of Scotland Georeferenced Maps. Rights of way were identified using Ordinance Survey mapping.
