A Week in the Life of a Research Scientist | Cell Culture, Nature, & Presentation

  • Hi, friends! I decided to capture a glimpse of what I do on a weekly basis as a researcher meandering between projects.
    Based on my Instagram feedback, not a lot of people know what a researcher does! And I understand. The science field is vast with so many areas of study and levels of expertise. I current study myosin motors and recently finished experiments for two manuscripts so I apologize for this very "entry-level" intro vlog, but I suppose this will do for now. :)
    Feedback and suggestions are welcome. I hope you all enjoy.
    Take care,
    Duha

    I’m so intrigued to pursue a career in medical/ scientific research but my parents really want me to be a doctor. Honestly, I feel like my skills are so much better matched in this line of work.

      This was me as well. But then I realised that I am not interested to dedicate my whole life to medicine just because of its stability as a career. And so now I am about to start my degree in biomedical science instead, really hoping to go into research :).

      omg this is one of the worst struggles! I’m still a senior in hs and I talked to my parents about pursuing a career in science but they didn’t seem to like the idea. it sucks when they set these standards for you because it makes you feel like if you do otherwise, you’ll disappoint them 🥲 a lot of my friends tell me to just stop caring about what they think and there’s truth to that but it’s usually people who’s parents would be content with whatever they plan for the future that say that 💀 I HOPE YOU CAN GET THROUGH IT THOUGH!!! i think we all landed on this video bc we wanted to familiarize ourselves with the field, just keep searching how this lifestyle will look like for you and if you decide it’s the one i hope you go for it!!! 😎

      I would pursue your passion rather than your parents.. but if you choose to listen to your parents, remember, you can always transition into research as a medical doctor. Should be an easy process.

    I aspire to be a bioscientist, doing research on molecular level, and this is really inspiring to see life of someone doing similar stuff out there. There is not much representation of the day to day life of research scientists, so this makes my goal feel way more realistic :)

    ✨A career which includes research, electronics and writing!!! So interesting! I've been searching for a career that includes research on lab, plus computer devices (simply electronics, cuz I'm a simp for gadgets and new stuffs) and I like to write my new findings and a little extra info., i like to write📝 poems, essays,etc., so everybody thinks I should go for art. BuT, I'm interested in computer software and devices (I study 🧑‍💻coding) but since im already 16, i feel it might be too late as per our environment, seriously. And I wanted a career which includes some 🧑‍🔬chemical, labs. Sorry all these seems and sounds funny.🌻 I really have nobody here to help me with such stuffs until your video showed me some rays.☀️

    Hi Duha, if I'm not mistaken at the time of this video you were still not accepted to grad school. Can I ask how it was possible to get such a research oriented job? Did you have a masters? and what did you do for undergrads?

    • @DuhaVang
      @DuhaVang  2 года назад +20

      Yes, that's correct! I was working as a researcher before grad school. I graduated with a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences and luckily had some research experience while in undergrad. Right after, I worked in a clinical lab, which help set me up for this research job. You might be surprised by how many research opportunities there are. A great place to start is in a university setting. Labs are often looking for fresh grads to fill in contracted positions (like my position in these videos). The work and experience will heavily depend on the PI and the lab though. I plan to make a video on my research journey and hopefully it will provide better insight into this!

    don't know why anyone would enjoy being in a wet lab getting paid pennies and having irregular hours. Plus, a lot of the in-vivo/wet lab experimentation can be simulated now using bioinformatics or machine learning. Also......being an academic slave to solve humanity's problems just so pharma companies can make a HUGE profit off your discoveries is so DISGUSTING.
