    Who said curly haired women & men don’t use shampoo? Its less shampoo. Hair is not shampooed daily, but every 3-5 days, depending on the persons routine, to remove buildup. A cleansing shampoo & no sulfate shampoos are used interchangeably.

      Their are clarifying sulfate-free shampoos. You don't need to interchange anything if you only wash when you need to remove build-up.

      PatriciaXOMakeup there’s definitely a growing co-wash community that has either cut shampoo out completely or only uses shampoo every few weeks or months (or even as needed depending on style). I personally prefer to use a shampoo every7-10 days because of the amount of product in my hair though. But I agree! Most of us tend to use less shampoo.

      Shelby Ferguson I’m confused with this co wash concept. I grew up, we washed our hair once a week. Used old fashioned hair grease. Do same today. Does it style, no but my head is clean and my routine simple. My mom told me, black people don’t need to wash their hair more than that. Decades later, I’m sticking to it.

    A little disappointed in this video, not going to lie. It’s not people following the crowd or whatnot. It’s the ACTUAL product. And not just the “no-poo” method of it. I NEVER co-wash, always wash my hair with a shampoo and I clarify once a month. But I used DevaCurl’s conditioner and styling products. So there is no way my hair is falling out, my scalp is itching, and my hair looks dry and frizzy because I “co-wash”. I never had issues when I used their products in 2017. All of the sudden, I’m pulling strands and strands of hair out while combing with my fingers. I use something else for a month and all the shedding decreases. I go back to DevaCurl and we’re back to square one. Intense hair loss. And how come my scalp itched insanely bad AFTER I had just clarified my scalp and then applied the products? And it even itches now as I type this, knowing I have DevaCurl in my hair? Thankfully tomorrow is wash day and I ordered a whole new batch of different products from a different brand to hopefully get my normal hair health back. Dr. Dray, I usually look forward to your videos and definitely looked forward to this one, and I understand why you would only look at it from one perspective as a medical professional, but I wish you had researched just a tiny bit deeper. To see that there have been people using it for years without issue and it suddenly stopped working for them. To see that some people DO wash normally, and just use the products, and still experience issues. To see that DevaCurl went under new ownership. Those are the possibilities I want to hear about. Not what damage co-washing can do when it seems to not have been an issue to some people anyway.

      The problems a lot of women report are probably in part be due to the products and DC maybe having changed the formulation but most of the women I know and read about in CGM groups who follow the CGM take the whole no poo part way too seriously or don't do enough to clean their scalp which in the longterm could definitely cause a lot of the complaints. It would probably occur with other products as well and not just the DC ones, so switching out products would probably only help temporarily at best. So I think she made a good point adressing this as an overall issue and not just a DC issue.

My scalp was itching like crazy. If many curly hair girls want to continue this method, they need to at least clarify their hair and scalp monthly. @@tjc2993 I can attest as a 3B curly girl, that co-washing does work - at least for me - and deva curl’s no-poo worked well for me since I started using them exclusively in 2014. This is in conjunction with a scalp cleanse every couple of weeks, so I knew my scalp was ultra clean. That changed in 2017 when I started noticing itchy scalp, dry and frizzing hair and tons of hair loss. Still, I continued using my same deva curl products and routine. Co-washing might not work for everyone. After all, everyone has different skin and hair types. But, to put blame on co-washing in general is short-sighted and trying to cast blame on victims instead of holding the company responsible. If 30K people (and rising) are all having the same or similar hair and scalp issues, that’s not just drinking the kool-aid, it’s a product issue.

    2. People that only use the styling products and cleanse their hair regularly are STARTING to have these problems

      @heidicasey6966 4 года назад +15

      What happens is the product you are co-washing with builds up on the hair and doesn't allow the hair to actually absorb moisture. Moisture loss causes the hair to be brittle, brittle hair is going to cause the hair to break. This also causes the scalp to have build up so it never get air or moisture properly either.

      I understand that and agree that may result in scalp scalp issues and damage the hair with some people. Whether the person has been using Deva Curl for 10 years or a couple months, most of the cases started noticing damage with in the past few years. @@peytonblanchard4955 that's not quite true I'm afraid. I do CG myself and clarify once a month with kinky curly come clean and as often as needed with a harsher sulfate shampoo , that's usually twice a year. Regular shea moisture shampoos I use every 3 to 5 days but those are not giving me a deep clarifying cleanse. I do find the problem still to be partly DC related and also their responsibility to admit that build up buster is not enough for a deep cleanse as it only uses micellar water. Build up happens with slapping product after product on, with hard water - you don't need nor should use harsh sulfates daily or weekly but by no means skip them all together. The skin is an organ and it has different needs depending on the weather/season as does your facial skin. Products should constantly be adapted. It is possible that deva curl products got contaminated but I also find it true that a lot of people use CG like a cult rather than as inspiration, not fully understanding the importance of a regular deep clarifying and what ingredients give this and which do not.

    It's important to note the origins of co-poo. It came from the Black hair movement in which Black women were embracing their natural textures and openly sharing techniques within the hair community. Many of these first participants naturally had textured, 4C hair (a very tight curl pattern, you can search "4C" in a search engine). This is important because the means of taking care of this type of hair IS VERY DIFFERENT than for those with other types of curly hair. One example is that oil must be added to the hair for health as opposed to many people wash their hair when it's oily.
    This means co-pooing (with intermittent shampooing) is actually very beneficial to this type of hair. But one can't assume that the same benefits would translate to other textures. Understanding the origins of the natural hair movement and who it was actually for will help people to more appropriately discern what techniques and products are actually the best for their hair.

That would be where the styling products come in...they could be causing more build up than a sulfate free shampoo can remove. Either that or there could be some kind of manufacturing/storage contaminate that’s also at play.

Some people are experiencing scalp issues because of a lack of cleansing (a lot of the symptoms I’ve seen on the Facebook group sounds like Seb derm) and others might be experiencing issues because the formulas of the products were tweaked and/or contamination. I don’t think there’s one sure cause, but maybe a few things combined.

      I am inclined to believe that Deva curl reformulated or chose cheaper ingredient sources or the products got contaminated somehow. Perhaps after the lawsuit, truth will out.

    She has no clue as to the real method. It is not about using conditioner only. The no poo has a cleansing agent in it. And all the products were water soluble. When the company merged against Lorraine Massey’s will 6 years again, the new company found a new supplier for their ingredients and went cheap and who know what could’ve been in the ingredients from the new supplier. The company was bought again over 3 years ago. And again November 2019. There was nothing wrong with the original company. But yes, after the merger in November 2013 we noticed this change in fragrance, consistency, and buildup.

    Dr. Dray, I religiously watch and love your videos and take your advice seriously. But I think you missed the mark a bit on this one. The curly hair community is very much aware about the importance of removing build up regularly and how neglecting to do so can cause hair loss. The problem with the Deva Curl scandal is that there are people who have been using these products for years without an issue but are only NOW having problems. No change in routine. To me, SOMETHING in their recent batches changed. I have used their products on and off for a decade and only recently had unbearable scalp irritation after using a new jar of deep conditioner that I have loved for years (after i freshly shampooed my hair- so no “no poo” issues with me). My hair looked fried and my curl pattern is still recovering. What many of us fear is that DevaCurl has been neglecting properly quality testing their products or simply don’t want to recall anything potentially damaging that could’ve made it to the shelves.

    What about all of us who have used only the styling products and have suffered chemical damage to our hair structure? I understand the concerns with cowashing and have always used a clarifying shampoo to avoid build up. But yet I have lost most of my curl and my hair is damaged without any reason.
    Also, I know you usually breakdown ingredients and you mentioned there’s no concern with their ingredients. What about the urea ingredient people are questioning now? And the theories of it being a formaldehyde releasing ingredient and is possibly causing these issues due to improper storage and transportation before reaching consumers? Or even better, the awful cheap plastic used for the packaging? Is it possible something from that is leaching into products causing these issues? I’ve even read instances where someone stored other products that never gave them issues in the Devacurl bottles and had the same issues. Could it be less the actual formula and more the packaging? I personally know the bottles are cheap and awful just from my own experience with the products. My bottle of gel literally dried up and split down the side causing the product to be unusable. There are just so many variables that the company is side stepping and no one can offer sound answers for any of it. So many of us have used these products for a long period of time and they have just recently been causing these issues so something has to have changed. Something isn’t right and it’s not just a co-washing problem.

So I think devacurl wasn't a problem at first, but after sustained use they have finally caused issues. Something similar happened to me and a few Lush products. All was well for a few months and out of no where I had severe skin reactions from head-to-toe. Sometimes these types of sensitivity reactions happen right away, and sometimes they can take months (or even years) to manifest. It's why Dr. Dray and other dermatologists recommend no fragrance, etc. Sooner or later something will happen to your skin.

Deva Curl recently changed their formula, I’m paraphrasing but they said, “We have made no major changes to the formula.” Which indicates that they have made minor changes.
    It is 100% not the consumers fault that a brand that has been recommended for decades is now destroying their hair. It seems you did not do enough research on the CG method and only approached the topic from one viewpoint and made generalizations for all people that are suffering from Deva Curls negligence.

      My hair likes low poo shampoo. But once every month or so I use a normal full poo shampoo (and a bit of diluted apple cider vinegar rinse). Otherwise I get a goopy layer on my scalp. It doesn't clean properly anymore. It looks kinda semi clean on the first day, but not the way it usually looks. It will lay flat on the second and look stringy on the third.

    I never followed the no poo method because my hair is fine but I loved their styling creme and one their gels. After A while I did noticed that my hair pattern was changing it was frizzy and it wasn’t curling anymore. At the time I never attributed to those products, but When I started using other products there was a major improvement in my hair.

    Some folks didn’t use the shampoo/conditioner, but styling products only. I used the leave-in consistently on mid-shaft to ends and that part of my hair feels like straw. That product is now in my garbage can and it will be interesting to see how this whole thing plays out.

    Once my scalp was becoming more and more damaged from deva’s products I was clarifying once a week and using the low poo twice a week. Stop gaslighting and victim blaming. Women of color have had to face discrimination and negativity around their hair for hundreds of years. I don’t think you know just how much work and product and money goes into curly and kinky hair types. Bye Becky.

    Okay first of all you have no idea what you're talking about I am a curly girl unlike you. Ive been using devacurl products for years so does my mother and it has done wonders for our hair. Shampoos(sulfate products) causes our hair to dry out, because it strip the hair breaking and also causing dry itchy scalp. If you don't scrub your scalp properly with "shampoo" ma'am you're still gonna have build up on the scalp.

  • @ZoeRiches
    @ZoeRiches 4 года назад +7

    This is what happens when certain people and brands take things from a community they don’t understand lol - in the curly girl community we made this method in order to retain moisture in our hair and not strip the natural moisture of our hair too often - IT IS A RULE THAT YOU WASH YOUR HAIR WITH REGULAR SHAMPOO AT LEAST ONCE OR TWICE A MONTH ! - instead of doing it every day or every week
    THIS METHOD WAS MENT FOR KINKY CURLY HAIR That tends to be dryer than other hair types and not retain and distribute enough natural oils from their scalp -
    Not everything works for EVERY hair type - there are big differences between loose curls and kinky curls and I believe this is why it’s happening to women with looser curls that use these products and do this method wrong and Its not happening to others

    I'm so upset. I've been a faithful user of DevaCurls for years! I couldn't figure out why my curls turned into waves and thinned. I was blaming everything but the culprit - my no poo, conditioner and leave in. 😭

      Me too! I had a huge change in my hair after giving birth 2x in 1.5 years- the hormones did a number on my curls! Plus had postpartum hair loss. I started to use devacurl when I was really trying to allow my curls to come back and then I started losing hair AGAIN! Now my curls are dry waves 🤦🏽‍♀️ I’m going back to something less damaging and less expensive!

    People have been using this product for YEARS, and the curly girl method for YEARS. Not to mention people are reporting scalp burns and curl loosening do actually use clarifying shampoos. Only in the past 1-2 years is when people started to have problems with the product. You’re not well researched and are making ignorant assumptions.

  • @MrsDawson108

    I wash my hair with a moisturizing sulfate shampoo once a week and co-wash once a week as well. I use clarifying shampoo once a month. I work out 6 times a week. When I started using devacurl styling products and their no poo (as a cowash), I began getting the burning, itching and hair loss around my hairline that most have described after only using it for a month. I didn’t have dandruff, just irritation. There must be something going on specifically with these products because I never experienced anything like this before or after and I cleansed my scalp with shampoo regularly and consistently. I don’t think all of these things can be chalked up solely to condition only washing.

    With all do respect, "PLEASE do "ALL" your research before a video"! I have read the comments below & this video sounds as if you are not "properly educated" as truly need to be, as seeing the whole picture & having the physically & mentally, co$tly & extremely pAiNfUl sTrEsS, outstanding issues is "NOT right", what if this was you, your child etc. having bReAkAgE, drier hair losing patches of your hair, we curly girls literally "work HARD" on our natural curly hair & honestly, we "ALL" deserve the proper Actions, "respect, answers, understanding & the 100% truth" & a hell of a lot more... Think of all the stress so many are in this scary whirlwind... I honestly believe that the new owners since Lorraine Massey of DevaCurl companies needs to investigate all needed options & do what's right for far to many...

    Although I find your videos educational, I have to disagree with this. I would use briogeo in between using deva curl, and I still have all of these issues that a lot of other people have. I don't believe that it's the ingredients itself, but possibly bad batches or some kind of chemical reaction within the product.
