Judy Garland's Tragic Diet Uncovered
Like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, Judy Garland cemented her place in Hollywood as a beloved icon. The wholesome Kansas farm girl who only wants to return home after finding herself in the land of Oz, Dorothy was sweet and caring, and audiences were smitten with her from the first scene.
But the lead-up to and making of the 1939 classic was a far more treacherous landscape for the teenager to navigate than the fictional perils of Oz. Garland would endure excruciatingly long work hours and a studio system that turned a blind eye to, and often encouraged, the use of substances such as stimulants to keep performers working and sleeping pills to ensure they would be able to rest.
By the time 17-year-old Garland finished filming Oz, she was already addicted to barbiturates and amphetamines. Her use of the drugs had started before the actress slipped into those ruby slippers, in part due to studio bosses who demanded she remains thin and energetic enough to cope with arduous days of filming.
Substance abuse would become an issue she would fight the remainder of her life until she died of an accidental overdose in 1969 at age 47, leaving behind her three children, five marriages and an artistic legacy often overshadowed by the tragedies of her short life.
Garland's mother was the first person to give her pills.
Born Frances Ethel Gumm in Grand Rapids, MN, on June 10, 1922, Garland was pushed to perform at a young age by her mother, Ethel, a frustrated vaudeville performer put her daughters on the stage as early as possible. At the tender age of two-and-a-half, Garland was in the spotlight performing alongside her sisters. Garland would remember her mother as "the real Wicked Witch of the West in later life."
Studio execs called her 'fat little pig with pigtails'
Signed to Metro Goldwyn Mayer as a teenager, she appeared in more than two dozen films for the studio, many with co-star Mickey Rooney, himself a teen at the time. Under the contract, she was scrutinized continuously by studio bosses, particularly about her weight.
In her first feature film in 1936, at age 14, Garland appeared a musical comedy about football coaches called Pigskin Parade. Studio head Louis B. Mayer and the MGM bosses were reportedly already worried about any extra weight on the diminutive star, going so far as to refer to her as a "fat little pig with pigtails." Placed on the first of many diets, Garland's food intake was severely restricted and monitored closely. To maintain her weight, Mayer insisted she consumes only chicken soup, black coffee and cigarettes, along with pills to reduce her appetite.
"Most of her teen and adult life, she had been on either Benzedrine or a diet or both," Garland's third husband Sid Luft wrote in his memoir Judy and I: My Life With Judy Garland. "Unlike other actresses, she could not successfully camouflage extra weight, especially because she was dancing and singing in revealing costumes. Just 4 feet 11 ½ inches, she could be underweight and still appear heavy or out of proportion on screen."

why do you repeat everything? o.O
Why do actually have to lost weight for the wizard of oz
Judy always seemed like such a warm and unpretentious person. It’s so sad how the studio set her up for neurosis and illness.
She was surrounded by a whole lot of evil, that’s for sure.
And addiction.
And here we all are loving the results
Didn’t she do blackface?
@@heheheh8128 like all actors - she did many faces none of which were her own. Why would blackface be any different? The public paid to enjoy her play dress-up like a barbie doll.
The studio abused her. It is disgusting.
they aren't much better today... :(
Her mother sure as hell didn't help, she was more than happy to pimp her around all for the $$$.
Everyone in her life abused her:/
her mom and some husbands did as well. her first pregnancy was terminated after they told her it would ruin her career. imagine that, telling your mom and husband you are expecting and instead of excitement, they team up and take you to a doctor to get an abortion.
Interestingly enough, Margret Hamilton ( she played the Wicked witch), was the one fighting for Judy's safety from sexual and drug abuse from the studio. Judy said it was one of her only allies from the studio
She was such a sad soul. They forced her to take uppers to stay thin, but that made her jumpy and agitated, so they had her doctors prescribe sleeping pills. Imagine doing that for years on end. They turned her into a mentally messed up addict. So sad.
Like Elvis
They did it to nearly every single starlet at the time and often these women were placed in mental wards when the use of drugs and alcohol would make them act out on set or in social places. So many actors of the time were categorised as schizophrenic but I think anyone could be if they were constantly sleep deprived constantly on a sea of upper and downers just to make their body work the way the studios wanted.
@@thesolocreative3538 agreed, that's too much for anyone to handle. Its really sad :(
Unfortunately this happens still this is why Michal Jackson died
Sadly too common. Presley went through it too.
It’s because of stories like these that I don’t envy anyone in Hollywood.
Right?? It’s so sad to see people mindlessly romanize and envy these poor actors without knowing the trauma these studios put them through
Agreed
Yep! Still happening to stars today... musicians too...
Same
It’s all because of the money & fame aspect. I love my normal, nobody life.
The evil in people's hearts will truly show when you see how far they will go to make money off of children
Real time example: Britney Spears
The destructive use of anyone at any age is evil. Compassion is lost when it comes to money.
A certain breed that claims to be "persecuted" throughout history did this to her!
@@SelectedNarcissist enlighten us! What “breed”? What a moronic antisemitic comment. Reported
@@oanagorcea1324 ,
Seek your 💟 heart , if you have one .
The day she passed, there was a tornado in Kansas. I hope her spirit is free in Oz. 🌈
I was unaware of that. That's nearly.
This post is beautiful ❤
Wow...
Oh wow. Never new that
Wasn't the entire movie about her trying to leave oz
I'm surprised she was even able to have kids with that diet, even more surprised the kids lived through the pregnancy.
It’s a miracle
You would be surprised what babies can live through during pregnancy
@@auroraborealis675 True, my mom had such severe morning sickness with me that she couldn't keep anything down and her doctor kept lecturing her for losing weight, but I was born perfectly healthy and right on the due date.
@@bridgetthewench im glad you were okay! The human body is crazy!
@@auroraborealis675 Thank you! Yes, it's amazing what we're capable of.
Poor woman. At 47 years old she looks every bit 67 and I'm sure she felt it, too. She was so talented and her life was as tragic as it was epic. I hope that she is finally able to be at peace.
For her role as Dorothy Gale in “The Wizard of Oz” Judy Garland was on a strict diet of chicken soup, black coffee, and forced to smoke 80 cigarettes a day, as well as pep pills
ALL TRUE !!! My dad grew up in Hollywood with Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney - he went to Lawlor's Professional School with them, sang / danced in their films and took singing lessons from Ethel Gumm (Judy's mom). Ethel Gumm was a monster as was Louise B. Mayer. I saw my dad cry twice ... once when his mother died and again when Judy died. Hollywood eats human souls and spits out the husks. Luckily, my dad left Hollywood after Pearl Harbor or he might've gone the same route.
That's so cool. It is sad how roughly treated stars can be
Wow Why would they do so to her
Wow that's fascinating!💯💯💯
@@nigerjenkins6372
Greed.
yeah... i have a lot of conversations with (those who are still alive) friends and we compare how things haven't changed much since that monster LBM and today's moguls :(
Living your dreams through your kids is one of the worst things a parent can do. Shame on you, Ethel Gumm! 🤬
well... that's parents still today :(
You should spend some time working in Hollywood, honestly there are so many kids in situations way too old for them because their failed performer parents want to live vicariously through them. It’s my belief that the majority of these parents are aware their children are at least in danger of sexual abuse but think it’s worth it for the potential of fame. Disgusting 🤮
All those poor kids got abused. Shirley Temple as well.
Her mother and the rest of the people who did this to her are probably howling in hell right now.
What an image!
If there were such thing lol
If there is a hell, I certainly hope so! Bastards all of them!
@@Mikelong257 there is. it is real. “The greatest lie Satan ever told is that he doesn’t exist”
So True
I just googled pictures of her in 1969 because I never knew her appearance was any different before she passed. That is so sad :( she was young but was looking older than any 47 year old person I've ever seen
I remember seeing her photograph when she arrived at Heathrow Airport with her husband Mickey Deans shortly before her death in 1969. I remember thinking how thin and worn she looked - little more than a skeleton.
She looked 70 instead of 47. Sad.
Interestingly enough, Margret Hamilton ( she played the Wicked witch), was the one fighting for Judy's safety from sexual and drug abuse from the studio. Judy said it was one of her only allies from the studio
Her diet was cocaine and prescription pills 💔 her life was heartbreaking.
And chicken noodle soup and cigarettes
😢😢😢😢
To say the studios totally messed her up is an understatement. Uppers and keeping her up for 72 hours? THAT'S TOTALLY INSANE!
And people judged her for killing herself! A truly tournamented soul!
Her death was never ruled as a suicide
@@joaniec6178 oh please with how much she suffered I wouldn’t be surprised if she overdosed intentionally
Ian Loeb
Everyone suffers, that doesn’t mean everyone has suicidal or depression. But yeah, I agree.
Such a talent. The industry broke her. Her voice is timeless
Wow, I didn't know this about her. Imagine finally being."allowed" to sleep for 4 hours only to be put on different pills to stay awake. What a nightmare!!! Also, I just went into the hospital for an enlarged liver due to my drinking (I quit!).....but a big problem was my lack of nutrition as well. So she developed Hepatitis and didn't really have a chance to let her liver heal. Awful!
Congrats on quitting alcohol!
She is now somewhere over the rainbow where blue birds fly and she is free like them. 😥Such a tragic story.
Renee Zellweger did an amazing job. I was mesmerized from beginning to end. I cried at the end. Wonderful film.
Really? I thought she was absolutely horrendous
She was great but Judy Davis was better in “Me & My Shadows”
Renee Zellweger is a man ....MTF. I'd tell you where to see that but my comments get deleted when I tell which channels show it, Many of today's "stars" are transgenders!! They have to show their loyalty to s 😈 by signs, symbols, duality and sacrifices. Open eyes 👀. When you see it, it's everywhere.
@@asa1973100 ...see my comment...maybe that is why.
@@mariantreber8055 stfu geez
The abuse she endured is unacceptable.
Stories like hers are what paved the way for the actors' union SAG.
I played as Dorothy in my school’s play of the Wizard of Oz, and the whole time I just couldn’t stop thinking of Judy. It disgusts me knowing how they treated her. She was so young when she died too...it’s just so sad
Makes one hate holywood and what is done to actors and actresses.
I just watched the movie "Judy" and I was so upset when they started giving her pills so young 😡She never had a chance! Poor Judy.
Judy had one of those voices that could Break Your Heart, even as a kid. But with all her suffering it grew even more poignant through the years. Only a few people I've heard have that kind of emotion in their singing: Billie Holiday, Roy Orbison, Edith Piaf, the original Hank Williams, Johnny Mathis, and some Johnny cash.
Maybe Karen carpenter.
She was a triple threat- singer, actress, and dancer ❤️
An amazing talent and a sweet soul. What happened to her was simply criminal.
It's disgusting to think that adults put her through that....abused from day one...
I really feel sorry for her having gone through all of this.
She was addicted to Barbiturates? 😵😱 Poor Judy, oh my god.
Seconal and Tuinal. Neither one is on the market now. Suicide drugs.
Also she took a drug to keep her weight down, poor Judy :(
That’s why she grew so skinny during her last years :(
She had a sad life. I figure her diet consisted mostly of pills, martinis and cigarettes. Like Patsy Stone.
What about that crisp in 1972
O my God. I adore Patsy Stone....
The worst part is, this abuse of young female celebrities hasn’t changed much. While studio executive don’t force their actresses to take pills, they do threaten to replace them if they don’t look a certain way all the time. Now a days, it’s mostly the parents to allow their up-in-coming daughters to be abused by (mostly) male executives in order to get a leg up in Hollywood. The most recent examples being Brittney Spears and Jennette McCurdy. There are some exceptions, but that’s because those people’s parents were already well established in the industry.
Omg I never knew Liza was judys daughter, how cool.
my. gawd.
Me either !
Me neither. They look nothing alike. And Liza had an awful voice!
@@indiatastic Look at Judy’s dressing room scene from a star is born. She looks identical to Liza.
Used and abused by Hollywood, so sad I hope she is in peace .She had the most beautiful voice and I still enjoy her movies .
Her favorite dish was Fettuccine Alfredo!
She also loved mashed potato!

Because the poor girl was starved! She’s literally the kid at subway that thinks everyone’s food is better than hers
Her mother gave her pills first 🙁........just wow.
She will always be my favorite. So tragic. So beautiful and so amazingly talented.
The shit women had to go through back then.
It shows good character to feel compassion for one so abused as Judy. People will answer for what they do.
She was born in my hometown of Grand Rapids MN. You can still tour the home she was born in although it was moved to its new location when I was in 6th grade and I am now 41.
May her beautiful soul R.I.P somewhere over the rainbow, way up high.
Her story is so wonderful but so so tragic. Her daughter Lorna was right she was a victim but her stardom introduced us to her and it was our gift. A double-edged sword indeed. 😢
POOR JUDY🥺😢 MY B SHE WILL REST IN PEACE 🕊️🕊️🕊️
Hollywood killed Judy Garland. So tragic and heartbreaking 💔
Dang. She was only 47! They make it seem like she was 67! She was still young and had so much more life to live.🙁She looked taller then 4’11 to me🤷🏽♀️
Such a cruel, cruel industry. I don’t think I ever want to see a movie again.
So sad 🥺 rip Judy. She was beautiful inside and out.
How amazing and glamorous does she look in that light blue dress at 8:15!!? Love the makeup and hair too!
What is truly horrifying when you look at human behavior is that there is a soul in there. So many dark souls, that’s what is truly horrific. What we do to each other...
What a tragic story! She was so beautiful and talented! 😔
Omg this is so heartbreaking…😿May her soul be at rest. Poor Judy…😢
Thank you so much for this video. I have always loved Judy Garland since the first time I saw The Wizard of Oz. Such a tragic life.
I once worked for an old money big deal family in hollywood and they had the most famous people over for parties in their back yard. It was a common legend that Liza Minnelli was born in one of their bathrooms one night because they couldn't get Judy to the hospital in time. I always knew she was treated horribly by the studios but my goodness the liquid benzo diet sound nightmarish. Poor woman, I hope she rests in peace.
She was so talented and beautiful! They don’t make em like her anymore! Love her! 💗
I would like you to make a video about her daughter Liza Minnelli about her makeup and food. greetings from Mexico
Quite easy, liza is a binge eater. Pretty healthy when she was younger but a long term friend of hers certainly wasnt a good influence.
Just found your channel and I’m OBSESSED 🤩
People complain about the way Hollywood is today but it's nothing like back then. At least there's laws nowadays
I thought she was older too. Poor Judy, RIP.
Pep pills is what made MGM a successful company .

they should make a movie about her called "goodbye yellow brick road".
You could make it
I think the phrase "Goodbye yellow brick road" is copyrighted to Elton John. But don't quote me on that, it could just be the song.
Classic Valley of the Dolls 🥺 so much of it during that time. Especially in Hollywood 😞
Y'all the amount of ppl's ED stemming from parents especially their MOM hits hard.
The studio also forced her to have an abortion when she became pregnant with her first husband.

Rest in peace, Angel. 💖💖💖 We will always love you, Judy.
This was so heart breaking 💔
I got a Burger Ad before this.
This story of drug addiction is so messed up and tragic. Luckily, Judy was able to give birth to healthy kids after it.
It’s so sad and so common. I hope one day women (and others too but women are hit the hardest) can be free of having to look “pretty” especially in Hollywood.
I did see that movie.. I love her voice. She was a beautiful singer.
That is so sad she was so lovely
We love you, Judy! You were always beautiful. Rest in peace.
I believe the pic at 2:55 is of Lauren Bacall? Awesome video, anyway!! I can see why Bacall could be confused for Judy from that angle..
Yes, you’re correct
i thought so too!
Oh wild thanks for letting me know I will have to double check

Hi Laura, yes the movie "Judy" was sad but a great movie about her life. Thanks again for your great video! ❤
That movie was so sad. Renee did an amazingly good job of capturing the essence of Judy. So sad.
How about some Theda Bara the original vamp?
Such a beautiful woman, what a sad and dark story when watching her onscreen what she REALLY went through :(
72 hours with 4 hours of sleep between 👀😭omg
This breaks my heart
Judy Garland was put on a strict diet of chicken broth, black coffee, and smoke 80 cigarettes a day along with pills to suppress her appetite for her role as Dorothy Gale in “The Wizard Of Oz”
Pretty sure the bottom smoking picture in profile is Lauren Bacall...
That yellow chiffon dress! 🌄🌄
My gods, the abuse she suffered what the fresh fuck... My heart breaks for her.
That is insane
Oh gosh I remember watching a documentary about Judy. So sad
Poor super talented Judy Garland, also called a "hunchback" by Louis B. Mayer of MGM who was another malignant narcissist! Judy was overlooked too many times as the years went by and was robbed of getting an Oscar for her Oscar worthy performance in "A Star is Born"! BTW,she was actually quite pretty in the 1940s under the direction of her husband Vincent Minnelli, Liza's dad. Lovely in a red velvet gown sitting in a window singing, "Have Yourself a Very Merry Christmas"! May she rest in peace~
Good video 👍👍
You know what I'm obsessed with Frank Sinatra and all day I just watch him . I came to this video to just get my mind off for some times and in the first minute here he is!!! 🙂✌🏻
Died at 47...Looked like she was 74...smh!!!
Poor beautiful, insanely talented Judy. Hollyweird is evil.
My favorite memory of childhood, still my favorite movie, it was only on once a year then❤️🌈
Mrs. Judy Garland is Wonderful Lady😍
The Judy at carnagie hall record album 1961 is genius!
Stress definitely ages you. Plus the smoking and alcohol use. But raised as a child this way it seemed she didn’t have a chance. The worst was the management of her money and after everything she went through to not benefit financially is a crime.
