I have definitely used the baggage reimbursement negotiation. In my case, they accidentally routed my checked back to Virginia instead of Nevada and I was going to be without it for a week as I was heading out on a backpacking trip. Unfortunately, I had a lot of communal gear for my group and all of the food. As a result, they paid to replace everything, but offered a mix of cash and flight credit that was the same value of my belongings. A good practice is to have a list of the common items you pack for trips and their values. Any value not covered by the airline may be covered with a travel credit card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve. Chase provided an additional amount to cover a few other items that I then had to buy to make up the difference in value. The biggest downside was that I then had to travel with two full backpacks of backpacking gear on my return flight and had to find a place to store all the extra camping equipment! With the overnight delay, this definitely works. I was delayed due to a tornado in Raleigh Durham once and they covered a 1st class upgrade, overnight hotel voucher, food vouchers, and the transfers to and from the airport. The guy before me was shocked because all they gave him was a hotel voucher and I explained that you have to ask for it and the nicer you can be about it all, the more likely the airline will help you without a fuss or extra hurdles like talking to their customer care phone number.
I had a lot of difficulty claiming damage for luggage. They required a receipt of the luggage purchase before proceeding with compensation. Their justification is you are supposed to keep receipts/records of purchase for 5 years. No receipt... No reimbursement. Even if they damaged your luggage . I ended up throwing away the suitcase and buying a new one.
0_0 That stinks! Wait, so they asked you to physically take out the baggage receipt from when you bought it??? I wasn't even aware we had to carry around receipts when it comes to your flight!😱😱😱 .....................wait, why do you need to show a receipt for damage when it usually needed for proof of ownership???????? Are they scamming. Cause that feels like a scam. 😑
@@DragonSlayer1417 They wanted proof of the value of the luggage before they were willing to calculate compensation. It was absolutely ridiculous. They said I could chase the receipt through my accountant or credit card company on the store I bought it from... Years ago... Doesn't matter if I paid cash, I still needed to come up with a receipt of luggage purchase before they would consider reimbursement.
My wife has been compensated for damaged luggage before, and I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t have had receipts, but it would have been based on reasonable valuations, so it was a fairly small, but sufficient compensation for second hand luggage.
I love how she makes the ticket agent sound like she’s so burdened and annoyed that the girl is asking for compensating. I’m more than happy to reimburse customers and it isn’t a bid deal if they ask for it. I’m not like “ oh how dare you do your research and then ask for what you want” lol!!
Glad to hear you are professional about it. Not all agents are as hospitable. And not all customers are Jeeni or Erika nice either. Easier to work with a calm knowledgable consumer.
I think it's meant to be more of a representation of the company/airline's attitude towards compensation. Not themselves being being a burdened and annoyed employee. You might be more than happy to reimburse customers, but is the airline really that happy for people to know their rights and get money back? I doubt it.
@@crazy808ish its not that as well. Sometimes you would get passengers calling and immediately shouting at the agents on the line as if it's their fault. My favorite travel tip is if you're flying international and you live near the US-Canada border, always check flights out of airports in both countries. When I flew to Korea a few years ago I flew out of Vancouver and the cost of gas to and from there, parking for 8 days at the airport, and my flight was $150-$200 dollars cheaper than the cost of gas to SeaTac and a flight. This isn't always true, my flight to Germany was cheaper out of SeaTac but it's worth taking the extra few minutes to search both airports.
We fly SEA from FRA (Germany) regulary and this would only work if you're a citizen of America, I suspect. My husband is German and he cannot go to Canada and America willy-nilly :) (We want to, but we simply cannot.)
@@LythaWausW German citizens are visa exempt in Canada, so they can enter without a visa. A simple online form has to be completed prior to travel (eTA). Barring inadmissibility issues to Canada entry across a land border should not be an issue.
I used to do that from London, ON. There was an airport shuttle service that went to Toronto and Detroit - same price for either. Domestic flights are usually cheaper, so if I was going to the US, I went through Detroit, but within Canada, Toronto.
Another booking tip - as we all know, sometimes you can't get a direct flight between two airports. You can use this to your advantage. When you are booking a direct flight, check if your destination is used as a connection to another airport, then book to that airport with a long layover. You can go to two places for the price of one, or something close to that. Usually, the layover will be short, but you can do an advanced search and set it up yourself. I've been on flights with 40-day layovers. 🙂
One risk you take with hidden city ticketing, is that the airline has no obligation to take you to your connecting airport. They only need to take you to your final destination according to your booking. The airline could reassign your connecting hub, possibly due to factors beyond their control, and you'll ever get to the connecting hub you really intended as your destination.
You'd REALLY need to bring that fine print with you to move things along. My guess is that many agents would push back and say "we can't do it" because they don't know all the rules that benefit passengers well enough... or are the type that can't be bothered. From the graphic the Jet Blue delay refund starts from 3 hours at $50. To get $200 the flight needed to be 6 hours delayed.
I don’t know if they still do, because I haven’t gone anywhere for years now, but I used to travel several times a year for fun, and I always used to book one way tickets for round trips, especially when flying with WestJet, because they leave from my airport 5 minutes away. And that’s actually kind of how their booking system worked. You did one way, and then you did your return, and they weren’t considered a round trip together. I don’t like being stuck or not being able to change my mind about when I might want to leave, so it’s easier to change the one way return than to try to change the return flight booking portion of your round trip. It’s like always having an “out”, lol. And it is almost always cheaper.
Thank you so much for showing us some tips and tricks when flying and I've been watching your RUclips and Tik tok video from 2020 and you've been a great inspiration. keep doing what you're doing for us thank you!!!!
Here in the Republic of Ireland, if the flight cancels or delays, apparently accordeing to the news over here, you are entitled to be repaid for whatever you booked during the holiday that you missed out on. For example, if you missed a day, the airline would have to pay not only for your accommodation and food and taxi, ect, while you are stuck at the airport, but also the day at the hotel that you would have stayed at, along with anything else you had booked that day, like theme park tickets for example. Which makes a lot on sense BTW. You booked things, and prepaid for them, and presumably can't get that refunded, because of the airline not fulfilling it's side on the contract. Remember, you booking a flight on a plane is you making a contract with the airline that they will fly you to your destination at a certain date and time. If they do not fulfill their side of that agreement, by flying you at that date and time then that's a breech of contract. Again, check the laws in whatever country you are from and don't take what I heard on the news here in Ireland for definite.
Ireland would fall under the EU regulations, which are the most generous in the world, but it is not as generous as claimed, and would depend on things like how long the delay was, and the cause of the delay. The airline is not required to compensate you for anything that you may have booked and missed because of a delay or cancellation, you would need travel insurance for that.
@@gavinneedham2013 I don't think you know Irish law. No offence. Also, I don't think this is an EU regulations thing, even though I have little confidence in the EU being a net gain for Ireland.
@@gavinneedham2013 It has been repeatedly shown on the news here that airlines have been forced to pay for the things that people have booked and couldn't get refunded because they missed out on it, because the flight cancelled

I recently went on a flight with American to Vancouver through Dallas. Our flight was delayed 3 times which caused us to miss our connecting flight. American paid for our hotel for the night, cabs to and from the airport, and 2 meal vouchers. This happens so much in Dallas that they set up a permanent area to print out the vouchers and book the hotel rooms for people. 😮 Also Dallas failed to load our luggage onto our new flight. We were immediately boarding a 7 night Alaskan cruise when we landed in Vancouver so the baggage desk in Vancouver told us we could file a claim. We boarded the cruise with NO LUGGAGE and did not have a port day for 3 days, so we could only buy clothes on the cruise ship…..which were not cheap even though we didn’t push it. They are reimbursing us for all of it! 🎉
That surprises me from American. We flew them to the Bahamas and both ways each flight was delayed so it took 2 days down and two days back. Our original flights were NOT over nights so this doubled our travel time each way. They offered nothing, rebooked us with connections that we would never be able to make and then blamed whoever booked the original flights, it was a huge cluster. So we had to pay for hotels both ways and meals. They offered us 150.00 voucher and that was after telling me they don’t usually give reimbursement for things like this. Not the first time they have screwed us out of time and money. Will never fly them again.
*Multi city is a good search too, if you want to spend a few nights somewhere before flying onwards, can work out like a free stopover for as long as you like lol*
What I also found out is that sometimes these are the airlines own rules that they stipulate that they have to follow, but they just won't volunteer the information to you. You have to find it and ask for it. But it is surprisingly not something they are forced to do. Sometimes it is, but most times it's not. They set these guidelines for themselves to entice people to fly with them. It's kind of like when you read the fine print they are saying "See, if something goes wrong we take care of you better than the other guys". And they won't back out on their promise but, they will only give them out if you read the fine print and ask for them.
Used to work for Qatar Airways, sometimes people will ask to cancel the second itinerary having Qatar being the layover. I got confused and it turns out Qatar is their actual final destination but it’s cheaper to buy a 1-stop ticket (Qatar as layover) than a non-stop ticket to Qatar.
With most airlines, if you do this, they will cancel your return trip - so you may need to do two one-ways, which of course may wind up being more expensive.
Works if you only do it occasionally, but this is against most carrier's rules (hidden city ticketing) so if you make a habit of it, you'll eventually be banned from the airline.
Dont do it. Are you flying outside your country then the return trip in most cases will be cancelled if you skip a leg of your flight. It might work if you fly within Europe, but mostly not. Also its just kinda rude to do. Someone else could be on that flight that you know you wont need, not to mention then the airlines flies with one less passenger that they could have gotten.
On a flight from Singapore via Bangkok to Copenhagen, in the early 80's, my new suitcase with wheels, bought in Singapore (for one reason, to pack 4 framed artworks = expensive!). The artwork was well packed, so I was not afraid it would be damaged, but, after getting my suitcases, my new one was damaged, two of the wheels was bashed into the suitcase. I headed to the desk and asked to be reembursed for the damages to my suitcase, and did show the receipt of purchase of where/when and the cost, and I have never had that good service before, and I got a new suitcase, which also cost more than what I paid for. SAS was my favourite airlines after this! The new suitcase did not have wheels, but I was pleased... still got that suitcase, Samsonite. Good quality! Had it for over 40 yrs, and maybe my grandkids may use it... 😊
The jetblue one I can definitely vouch for coz it happened to my mom. Her flight was delayed by 8hrs and they gave passengers conflicting updates so some went back home and then came at the new time. They automatically sent us a $200 travel voucher.
Yes, I got the hotel and transfer when my flight from Singapore to Hongkong got delayed (not airlines fault though, it’s typhoon in Hongkong so…) they book us tickets on next day, give us hotels and transfer from and to hotel). The other times, we got upgraded to first class ticket because of volunteering our ticket for someone. Both on Garuda airline of Indonesia. Other time is delay for 2 hours, the airline (lion air) gave us meal as we are waiting.
Thank you for videos like this, as it breaks it down nice and easy to understand 🙂. Any tips out there on extending airline miles that were converted from credit card points with a looming expiration on the transfer miles?
Reimbursement for lost luggage sounds so amazing. With how often I hear about luggage going missing its good to know that the airline SUPPOSE to reimburse you. The annoyed flight attendant definitely is adding to my fear to fear of confrontation though. Fingers crossed I never have to.😱
Actually read the fine print, because the compensation for delayed luggage is not as good as you think (and not as good as advertised in the video, lots of caveats). As for the customer service agent, most are really nice and will try and help you. As long as you are nice to them and not acting like the demanding passenger character here.
Also, you need to acquaint yourselves with the Warsaw Convention. It limits airlines to a few bucks for each pound. I had a bag lost 20 years ago by AC. The Rep. actually gave me double the amount she had to. Still didn’t come up to more than $700 CAD!

Love these tips to consider. I am very suspicious about many of these "panning out" ($ actually showing up in the email, etc). The hotel after midnight? Yes. But passengers have complained they didn't get there until 2am ... these are "rights" the airlines post but who is forcing them to follow through? (I was a flight attendant too. It gets in your blood and never leaves. Glad I'm not part of these ridiculous brawls after 2021.)
I only needed one-way on KLM. It was more expensive than the round trip, so I just bought the round trip and didn’t use the return trip. This won’t work if you don’t show up for the first half of the trip since a no show for that cancels the other half of the trip as well.

@Dragonflyathena - At O'Hara Airport, as I watched out of a window, a baggage handler was (roughly!) filling a cart to get packed into a flight. He flung a suitcase vigorously as the handle came off in his hand. He pitched the handle into the cart and left the suitcase lying alone on the tarmac. NEVER pack anything fragile in check-in bags! Have flight insurance and know your rights. Also, I worked with a woman who dated a baggage handler at Newark Airport. She told me that if the luggage was pricey, they would crack it open to see what they could get.

I’ve seen some of the airlines videos. I would be very careful generalizing all of these scenarios with every airline, especially Southwest. I have actually watched them turn people down when they ask for hotel vouchers and they don’t give them out. Passengers are just stuck, even when it is the airline’s fault
The problem with booking separate tickets (at least that I've found), is that the airline becomes less liable for a cancelled flight as part of a layover, because they've no longer ruined the "whole journey", as the layover country becomes the "home location", and they don't have to provide accommodation. Please correct me if I'm wrong, because that's what I was told
Every country and every carrier has different rules. Some will only cover up to a certain amount - I had my luggage damaged going to Scotland by WestJet (a Canadian airline), and they will only pay up to $100 to repair your suitcase - you have to repair the suitcase and send the receipt in. It’s a pain in the butt.

It fits just a little too well with videos I've seen on other channels giving tips on defending against scammers that prey on travelers.
Know what else feels illegal? When you learn that TSA actually has no control over security. THE AIRLINES DO. TSA is not there to ensure passenger safety, or flight safety. They are there to HARASS us. FOR THE AIRLINES.
Like being owned a tax refund, but having to ask and negotiate for it.
My husband and I had a TAP flight from Germany to Portugal last year. They overbooked the flight and didn't let us on, were rude to us, and wouldn't even talk to us. Later, we were bumped to a flight the next day with free meals and overnight stay, but hey, I knew that wasn't enough. While the staff was too rude and unhelpful to explain our rights as passengers, I Googled and discovered we were eligible for a 400EUR compensation per person, which we did get eventually after a series of emails and phone calls.
TAP is awful. My boyfriend has flown with them a bunch and has never had a good experience. They deserve to go bankrupt.
Oh you flew on TAP? TAP =Take Another Plane. Actually, I have flown them many times and luckily, I haven't had bad experiences with them but I believe you because I know others who have. @@ferretyluv

Great video SK! b_lum here lol Though quite a few of these don't work with asia airlines, but I'll try again.
I knew about compensation for delayed bags en route. Years ago, we were in Singapore en route to...somewhere.... Everyone else whose bags were delayed got a box of chocolates. We asked for compensation and got $200 Cdn each (25ish years ago)
Safe travels Jeanie! This was such an eye opening video. Thank you for sharing this.

Thank you. You took the words right out of my mouth.
That was my very first thought 💭 !!
Your videos always make me laugh and smile. I need more people like you in my life

I had a lot of difficulty claiming damage for luggage. They required a receipt of the luggage purchase before proceeding with compensation. Their justification is you are supposed to keep receipts/records of purchase for 5 years. No receipt... No reimbursement. Even if they damaged your luggage .
I ended up throwing away the suitcase and buying a new one.
feels like an insurance claim sometimes. they try everything to get out of it!
That’s absolutely ridiculous. How are we supposed to find proof of purchase from years ago?
My wife has been compensated for damaged luggage before, and I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t have had receipts, but it would have been based on reasonable valuations, so it was a fairly small, but sufficient compensation for second hand luggage.
I have went on so many flights and I wanna fly with you lol! Thank you for these, love your attitude Jeenie!
Agents on the phone are not always able to provide compensation, there are separate departments for that.
Its dealing with shouting and rude people all day that makes the job difficult.

NEW VIDEO !! Was waiting for a long time !! LOVE YOU JEENIE WEENIE !! KEEP UP YOUR WONDERFUL WORK !!
This video is awesome!! It’s great to see all these tips for US airlines then have someone discuss the possible differences and similarities for Canadian airlines. I found this channel recently and have watched soooo many videos now!! If there are any flight crew reading this, thank you for the work you do. I don’t think ppl realize how much responsibility you have and how underpaid you are (at least those employed by North American Airlines). I’d love to know what an appropriate and appreciate thank you gift (tip) would be. Cheers!
This is so true. We live in SEA and always crosscheck YVR. It is usually a lot cheaper.
Great tip! We live in San Diego and always check if it's cheaper to fly out of Tijuana, Mexico. (It usually is and is only a 20 minute drive for us.)
Domestic flights are usually cheaper, so if I was going to the US, I went through Detroit, but within Canada, Toronto.
thanks so much for those tips jeenie. enjoy your travels and keep safe always.
Girl, I love your cheerful & happy vibes!! Thanks for your tips, too!
The price goes up significantly after a few days every time I've tried that, but it's worth a shot.
Maybe she waited for 5 hours before asking the agent 😂😂😂
This video is amazing. It's so useful cuz I'm flying soon and I love the intro. Looking forward to new shorts 👍
This is life changing!! Thank you!
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing the expertise!
I feel that when it comes to airlines, just because it"s law does not necessarily transfer into what you actually get from them.
I had a situation recently about that. The flight was canceled and according to their rules... Which i read... In those cases, they should give snacks and/or hotel accommodations, yet they refused saying it is not airline fault, but weather, but to me that is an open excuse... That could be used for bullshit reasons to avoid paying... Like for example, the pilot for my flight, got drunk last night, woke up late, got late to the flight prior to mine, which delayed that arrival at the airport i am waiting for my flight. So that delays my flight arrangements... And "weather on origin.. We won't pay snacks or hotel"...
@@sabias3932 exactly. People are scared of being assertive. I’m not 😂
@@nelbelmont weather does not count.
They only compensate if it is their fault for the delay or flight change

@adbaum227 - As always! There are no shortcuts.
Such great tips, thanks!!!
I LOVE YOU!!!

Thanks for the tip
With most airlines, if you do this, they will cancel your return trip - so you may need to do two one-ways, which of course may wind up being more expensive.
Works if you only do it occasionally, but this is against most carrier's rules (hidden city ticketing) so if you make a habit of it, you'll eventually be banned from the airline.
Better make sure you have no checked bags.
Thanks for the tips good to know.have a fun trip
This is one of my best subscribes ever! Love your vids!
Fingers crossed I never have to.😱
I feel like money is a pretty good motivator against social anxiety though lol

I had a friend traveling over the holidays and her flight was cancelled due to inclement weather. They issued her a voucher for the cost of the ticket she had bought, but it was no-where NEAR enough to cover the cost of RE-booking her flight last second over the holidays.

In Canada we have a pretty good passenger bill of rights but one of the things not covered is delay due to weather.

Damn I didn't know you can get reimbursed for a damaged bag. My bag was damaged by British Airways when moving back home from Korea, so I lots of stuff, i.e. two large suitcases and a heavy backpack, and moving around with a case with a newly broken wheel was a NIGHTMARE. Like almost undo-able, I was freaking raging at the time because it wasn't an old case and I've never had a suitcase damaged before...
When I've had delayed luggage, they have had to deliver to my specific destination address, even though that address was over an hour away from my airport. File a claim and carry one change of clothes in your carry-on.
Wow I learned so much and you made it fun!
