    Found out any crack or tear on the hubcaps inside will cause the ticking noise. I ignored it for almost a year. It only makes the noise when I'm going below about 50mph. Checked tires for rocks. Still ticks, but Thanks to a couple of videos and yours I was able to finally buy the weather strip seal at home depot for just about 2 dollars. Placed it on every slot you showed (not the slot that holds the metal wire) and boom, solved. No more annoying loud embarrassing ticking noise! Thank you for sharing this common issue for an easy DIY. 97 Toyota hubcaps.

    First off I just want to say thank you because as far as I could find, this is the only thing on the internet that even acknowledges that this problem even exists, let alone offers a viable solution. No matter how good or difficult life gets, that infuriating clicking sound finds a way to make everything worse. I have a 2014 Corolla, which has those stupid cheap snap-on hubcaps, so when I saw that your solution required sticking something onto the outer spokes of the hubcap, which is exactly where the hubcaps latch onto the wheel, I was very worried that this meant there was no solution for me. I went and got 3/8 x 3/8 weather stripping, so slightly less thick than what you use here, and stuck it on every non-latching spoke in 1-2-inch pieces.
    Predictably, snapping the hubcaps back on with the stripping on them was considerably more difficult than without the stripping, and there were moments when I did not think it would even be possible without breaking the cheap plastic. I ended up using a technique where I simultaneously applied as much force as I could muster with both hands AND both feat on four different points on the wheel to jam it back on. It was probably the most strain it could take before breaking, but it's latched on every spoke and both wheels I tried it on (both passenger side wheels). I took it for a spin around the block, hitting the speed bumps at an angle, right after and no clicking! I'm hopeful and curious about the next few months seeing how it goes!

    Thanks so much for this fix, TomEighty! I have an all-original (right down to the wheel covers) '64 Mercury Comet convertible that was making scraping noises from different wheels...at different times! With an antique car, noises like that can be lots of things (stones in the wheel covers, broken brake parts, a bad wheel bearing, serious differential problems, etc...). So, I was at my wits end! My garage was quiet when I jacked up one wheel, lowered it...and briefly heard the noise! I researched this problem when I came up with your weatherstripping fix (and thanks for the link!) Got the weatherstripping, cut it to 2 1/2 to 3 inch lengths and fastened them around the inside perimeter of each cover. After finding it worked with a test-drive, I used the rest to do a spare wheel cover I had. So, that roll is just enough to FULLY do 5 wheel covers! Again, thank you very much!

  • @supersonique001
    @supersonique001 6 лет назад +12

    Actually u don't even need weather stripping in most cases. It's usually because someone over tightened the plastic nuts too much and warps the plastic fascia of the cap producing the clickclick noise when you slow down with your windows open. Loosen nuts and then re-tighten finger tight! Noise gone! Always be weary of what the blood sucking dealer tells you, remember their service center is a 'profit center' !!!

    • @snowyowl9132

    Nice. Thank you for the tutorial. I have a Dodge Avenger 2014 and while driving I once rolled my window down and started hearing a weird screeching kind of sound. I took it to the mechanics and they told me that the problem was the transmission. I freaked out since the transmission was for 3000 dollars. I took it to some other mechanics and it resulted that it was just the rim cover lol. This is nice to watch. Thank you. I didn't have to spend 3000 bucks for something that was not the problem. It's just fixable with 3 to 5 dollars. Lol

    I have a toyota 2018 corolla and few months ago, i started hearing clicking noise coming from the front driver side when steering to the right. I could hear it in the parking garage as I am making right turns. I took the hub cab off and re-seated them and made sure it was on secure. The hub cabs seemed little loose as I was able to pull it off with bare hands with minimal effort. I might bring this up with the dealer on my next maintenance visit since it is still under 3 yr warranty. after it was reseated the sound disappeared or perhaps sound got fainter. Knock on wood. I am glad that I came across this video first before the "replace your CVT boot and axle" video. I didn't need the weather strip seals in my case. I think these hub caps are poorly designed and doesn't have good tight grip on the wheels. Not too big of a problem to warrant a recall I suppose.

    I need to ask, does this "click" / "tink tink tink tink" sound only happen once in a while and does it stop on the highway? Asking because I recently ran over hella potholes on the freeway, when I got off I smelled this almost burning smell. I rolled down my Windows and shut the music off, and sure enough I hear a tink tink tink tink... Like in steady rythm. I pulled off into a gas station and parked my car and looked underneath. Nothing out of the ordinary. Proceeded to drive it cautiously and it turns out the sound stopped. But now when i drive it... It kicks in every now and then. I actually have to pull off to the side, and stop the car and then continue to drive it and it like resets itself.
    I'm very nervous because I just got a new fuel pump replaced and sometimes if my ears don't decieve me it sounds like its coming from that area.
    Also new alternator. My car is a 1997 mercury grand marquis

    • @tomeighty
      @tomeighty  6 лет назад +1

      Jack Ostroski Does it have "rims" or hub caps? Usually the Grand Marquis has an aluminium rim from what I have seen, and that wouldn't be relative to this video then.

      @jackhammer9261 6 лет назад +1

      tomeighty hey Tomeighty, thanks for the reply. So yeah i dont think it has hubcaps, it has like a cover for the lug nuts. I took those off and have drove it about 30 miles since, and still notice the click/pop/tink sound now and then. So i am guessing it could be the catalytic converter.

    • @tomeighty
      @tomeighty  6 лет назад +1

      That's a weird one. I know I had a 1997 S-10 pickup truck that when I would turn it off after running it for awhile it would make a pinging noise. I'm assuming it was the exhaust cooling down or something. Those had a full aluminum exhaust from the factory so they might expand and contract a lot more than a regular metal exhaust. Good luck with finding the noise!

      @jackhammer9261 6 лет назад

      tomeighty yes sir. Does that everytime i shut the car off. It will sound like little gremilins are playing soccer with a pebble inside something. Last thing I need is my car to make weird noises and take a poop on me. So just trying to prolong its life at this point.

    Hi. I also have a similar click sound on my Acura RSX. I'm still diagnosing the problem, but after seeing your video, I think it might be the hub cap. How did you figure out it was the hub cap on your car? Did you rotate it while lifted? What if I don't hear the click when rotating the tire freely?

    • @tomeighty
      @tomeighty  7 лет назад +1

      I heard my noise so clearly when I would be at the drive in and my car slowly moving next to a brick wall with my windows down. I assumed my CV joint was all tore up and ready to go. I looked under there and both looked new yet. I spun the tires freely and didn't hear a noise. It wasn't until I pushed on the hub cap and I heard the familiar noise. I think the tire has to be on the ground and have pressure pushing the hub cap in and out. It's a good feeling to get the noise to go away with out spending money. Good luck, let me know if that worked.
