Join me at the stunning Fairmont Hotel in Austin as I dive into an in-depth review of the Canon RF35mm f/1.4 L VCM lens with portrait, wedding and engagement session photos to look at. Filmed at the largest Fairmont in the U.S., I explore whether this lens will make it into my camera bag or if I'll pass it by. This high-quality L series lens features a new VCM motor, lacks image stabilization, and is a hybrid photo-video lens, following the RF 24-105 f/2.8. It's lighter than the EF version, customizable, and offers a virtually silent operation with minimal focus breathing.
A huge question will likely be how is the Canon RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM lens vs the Canon RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM (cheaper version of the lens). To be frank, comparing the canon rf 35mm f18 vs rf 35mm 1.4 is night and day. The Canon RF 35mm 1.4 is an L series lens, and a higher quality than the Canon RF 35mm 1.8. They both have the custom function button, the cheaper one actually does have image stabilization, but the more expensive one has a smooth iris ring, which is pretty for for videographers (not meant for photographers). This is a great portrait lens for sure, producing clean lines and crisp, sharp photos.
I compare it to my favorite Canon RF 28-70 f/2 lens, discussing its practical use, especially for prime lens enthusiasts and low-light conditions. Retailing at $1499, this lens balances cost and performance for serious photographers. This is my honest Canon RF 35mm 1.4 Review.
Special thanks to Chasing Stone for the beautiful backdrops and Hobolite for the chic constant lights.

@@VanessaJoy Got it. I see they just now announced it in the premier. Looks great.
Awesome, thinking about it. Already own the 28-70. As always love your video and thank you....
Yeah when you have the 28-70 you’re in the same boat as me…
Love the video!
Thanks so much!
Thanks for the video Vanessa! May I ask for your advice? I’m a portrait photographer that does some weddings and I do a lot of video and the rf851.2 lives on my camera. I’ve been wanting to get into wider portraits but still keep that shallow DOF. The 135mm1.8 is enticing but maybe it’s time to experiment with the 35mm range. Any thoughts on this 😅??
Hmmmm to me if you’re doing portraits these days that 35mm is super trendy right now. The 135 gives a completely different vibe but I would say it’s closer to the 85 so if you were going to expand, I would probably get the 35 first
Already ordered mine. My wife and I had our wedding reception in that room at the Fairmont. Such a special place.
It is!!
Thank you for your honest review! Loved the BTS of you working with this. These images are phenomenal, some of your best (imho). I love how you mixed in the video lights. Would love to see more content on how you shoot with the hobo lights! ❤
Thanks so much!!
IS there a place to see all the photos you took for the video, especially the ones you used with the model and the hobolite?
This video and my Instagram the past two days ☺️
Great video, @vanessajoy! The images were stunning and looked absolutely gorgeous. I'm considering buying the 35mm lens for both photo and video. Does the image quality and bokeh compare well to the RF 1.2 primes? I know there's a difference in f-stop, and also is the rendering of this lens on par with competitors like the Sony G Master 35mm f/1.4? And Can the 70-200mm f/2.8 and the 35mm lenses cover weddings, events, and fashion photography?
Thank you 😊
It definitely is on par with the 1.2 primes, very little difference. I couldn’t let you know about comparing it to the Sony lens since I haven’t used the Sony one, and of course it depends on your shooting style, but the range of 35 mm plus a 70-200 definitely Gives you a lot of range.
@@VanessaJoy Thank you for sharing your views. Will definitely buy this one 😊
Thanks for the constructive review 😊
What model of spotlight do you have that you hold in your hand?
Glad you like! Isn’t that light cute?? Hobolite Mini: adorama.rfvk.net/4PXqZ9
@@VanessaJoy ❤️Thanks a lot
Great Video!!
thank you!
Hey Vanessa! thanks for the video, would you say the rendering of this 35mm f1.4 is closer to the rf 50mm f1.2 or the rf 85mm f1.2?
The 50 for sure
Love tbe 35mm focal length
Hey Vanessa! What’s the minimum focusing distance of the new 35?
11”
Good to see Canon rolling out this lens, looking forward to more lol. I believe this 35mm 1.4L + my 24-105 F4L will be just perfect for everything I do at the moment.
there ya go!
Always exceptional content V. I just got this lens on release day and can say that it will be a game changer this wedding season. I have ALWAYS been jealous of my Sony friends who have such light lenses and finally it's happening from Canon. at 1.2 pounds this thing is a breeze to throw around. I have had the 28-70 since its release and just cannot get myself to use it often because of the strain it puts on my back and tendons.
I think you’ll love it!!
Hello Vanessa! Please tell me what light you use in the clip at minute 2:34. Thank you very much.
Hobolite! Links in the description ☺️
@@VanessaJoy thanks You for answers. 🥰
So excited! Finally time to retire my extra heavy sigma 40mm 1.4, R.I.P!
woot woot!
Thank you for your honest opinion and also thank you for showing your dilemma between 28-70 and 35mm :) as well. I have exact same situation and I use 35mm (1.8) at and after reception. So, I don't go gym and 28-70 is killing my wrists after 4 hours. I follow your updates and probably I will buy it to replace 35 1.8.
Thank you again.
yes if you love the 1.8 it's definitely a nice upgrade for you!
Picked this up yesterday and it’s great! Like the 28-70 as well but it’s a beast…as usual it depends what you are shooting. I’m going to get lots of video work with the 35mm!
Yay 😃
I’ll stick with my 28-70. Thank you for the video 👍
yeah I think that lens is like next to God so it's hard to convince me otherwise lol
Ordered, mostly because I also do video.
But I run the holy trinity for zooms and the 50/85 1.2 for primes.
Will be nice to have a wide prime because the 15-35 2.8 is not as fast as I'd want in some events.
Though I usually only want the very wide distortion shots, this won't quite fill that need either.
So that's why the video part of the lens is really what made the decision.
Nice!
Great video Vanessa ❤ I'm waiting for the 50 1.4, hopefully it will come this year as well. The 1.2 is too expensive.
I hope so!
For the end of the reception, I sometimes jump to the Rf 24 1.8. Even being a gym guy, my middle back can't take until the end with the 24-70 or 16-35. Maybe it's the age hitting up lol.
The EL-1 is pretty heavy as well.
Haha maybe - that’s a great reception lens too!
Wow, really Impressive Pretty Lady,! What an honor and opportunity for You. This looks like it will be a great lens for Canon shooters and Videographers. Really good video and some great Photography!
thanks so much! Was so excited to share this shoot with everyone
Does your hubby have any input for the lens (he films your videos right?) since it's more of a lens for video?
The aperture ring is strictly a video feature for a reason. It will attract some videographers but at the expense of the CN-E line of lenses all of which have declicked rings. But I would say this lens itself is more photocentric. Canon is clearly trying to attract videographers to adopt the RF glass series as they add more attractive video features into their EOS mirrorless cameras. I think you can expect every new RF L lens to have a declicked ring moving forward.
Here’s his reply ☝️☝️
Great review 👏👏👏…when do you get your hands on r5 11?😃
Thanks! Haha you know something I don’t??
@@VanessaJoy 🤪bet you’ve already got one 💯🤣
I have the RF28-70 also. I have the EF35 f1.4 and love it. I also have the 50 f1.8. The 35 is great for landscapes but for Weddings and Events the 28-70 is hard to beat.
That 28-70 really is just the top
Very useful video. My 28-70 is also my main Canon lens, but I kinda wish I hadn't sold my EF35/1.4L a couple of years ago. And this RF one is clearly even better. But I'm not sure it would get much use, at least not for paid work. Still, awesome lens.
Glad it was helpful!
One of the things that I like most about my RF 28-70 F2 is (interestingly) its weight! It feels credible, and with the PeakDesign cuff, I have no fear of dropping it. This 35mm is not for me (not right now), but I see the 50mm F1.2 and 85mm F1.2 in my future.
gotta have it. thanks. after my 100-300 comes in tho..
I want that lens too!
Cool looking lens! I wonder if it is sharper than the 28-70 with it being a prime, but I'm sure that if it is, it's not noticeable.
Hmmmm I’m not sure honestly. They’re both so good it’d be hard to tell
@@VanessaJoy I thought that would be the case. Only "pixel peepers" could tell any difference. I'm sure!
Let's appreciate the classy elegant look of the photographer for a moment and forget about the lens: classical beauty in a classy style. You can't go wrong👍
Haha thanks
It’s so hard to replace my 28-70 and 85 1.2, so a 35 1.4 with video features I’ll never use is a swing and a miss for me. I was hoping for a big honking 35 1.2. Maybe one day…
Have they ever made a 35 1.2??
@@VanessaJoy Sigma makes one and Canon made one back in the day for their film cameras.
Finally!!!!!!
yes!!
Can you do a review for this lens...using it in the dark?
I did - those engagement photos were in the dark. Like 2000 ISO natural light
Love this review! This really looks like an amazing lens..... however, I am with you on my kit and thinking.... my R6 mkii ALWAYS has my 28-70 f/2.0... okay except when I use my 50mm f/1.2 for some creatives but this is about a 95% / 5% thing. I don't mind the weight, as I don't go to the gym as often as I should.... HEY ROUND is a Shape. LOL Giggle WHAT I am Curious about.... is the Creative Insert... since it's an RF... Where can I get that, I'd like to try that in my 28-70 and my 50... maybe even in my 15-35... hmmm ideas forming.
Is that filter insert compatible with all RF lenses or just the new 35? If that’s compatible with all RF I’ll be buying it for sure! @vanessajoy
I think just the 35
lol round is a shape :-)
I was looking forward to the RF85 F1.4 but if the RF35 F1.4 is $1500.... the 85 will most probably be over $2000 😒😒. We need 3rd party RF mounts. These prices are heavy!
Hmmm I’m not sure on that one
I wouldn’t know what to do with it. Where can I buy it?
right here: adorama.rfvk.net/nLYBO9
🤦🏾♂️ I told myself that I would stop clicking on Vanessa Joy’s affiliate links… I need to stop lying to myself😂 Seriously though, I love my sigma ef35mm art but all of my RF mount L lenses have me spoiled. I can’t wait to get mine this week!!
Congrats!!
is the video part with gimbal ?
Yup!
Hi Vanessa.
Can i be part of the monthly plan for several months?
Definitely!
@@VanessaJoy how can i do it?
That's so compact for a f 1.4 lens.
Shame the Iris/ Aperture ring is only active for video footage not stills photography.
Is there anyone producing ND filter or Graduated ND filter inserts for that filter inserts holder?
I’ve definitely seen this size before and it’s usually the kind that goes right on the sensor I believe. I don’t know any brands offhand as I don’t personally use them.
Looks nice! Hopefully we see an RF 50 1.4 and an RF 85 1.4 in the near future.
They have those in f1.2
yes! that medium lineup is definitely a good place that the EF lineup had
I see no point in 1.4 versions of those lenses when they exist in 1.2
@@Sp1keSama Size, cost… Mid-tier lenses are always good, but that’s just my opinion.
Cool sunnies.
woooot! pre-ordering now, thanks for the vid here : ] (but omg, what's happening with the audio on this one 🎚😿)
yay! use my link and I get six cents lol
Was it off?? I did have to VO one part!!
This lens would be amazing for videographers using a gimbal, as it covers a very useful focal length for shooting scenes and slightly wider people shots.
Yup - we show video shots in a gimbal in this video - was perfect!
2:43 de-clicked aperture only? Wonder why they didn't add a switch to choose click vs de-click. Bit of a bummer for photographers.
not sure on that one. do you like changing the aperture via the lens instead of the camera?
@@VanessaJoy I've come to enjoy changing it on the lens on my Fuji & Sigma glass. Latest Sigmas have a (de)click switch that allows one to have it either way.
Both Sony and sigma offer this! why canon don’t and being more expensive
I think it's because it's only available when in video mode. Vanessa briefly mentioned that in the video, and her husband mentioned it in a comment somewhere, I don't know anything more about it other than those two things. Since it's for video only I would imagine Canon figured it didn't need to be clicky.
RF lenses have a control ring that can control anything, including aperture.
I anly came to see Vanessa. Mission accomplished
Haha hi!
Wait, did you say the iris ring only works in video mode?! So the lens has an aperture ring but you can’t use it for photos?! Deary me if that’s true 🤦🏻♂️
I believe so
I have the 28-70mm, Its my workhorse for weddings... but tbh I'm getting tired of using that lens. Its kinda like eating the same food every day lol
lol I feel that
@@VanessaJoy 28-70 is one man army
Ive got it, its heavy, not that good wide open at 45mp, im disappointed.
@@jukeboxjohnnie Depends on what your needs are of course. But I most often shoot at 2.8 for documentary type stuff, and only use 2.0 if I have to. Zero complaints on quality that way.
Wow I am surprised you are saying this.. it's a dream lens. All in one lens for potraits, events, sports etc
WHAT!!!!! I dont need it... i dont need it.... but I REALLY WANT IT
right?!?!
I’m a bit sus about your review - can it be at all impartial when you worked on the promo video with Canon to launch this lens?
I literally said I don't know that I'm going to buy this lens, and gave only one scenario where I would. There's nothing inaccurate about what I say no matter who pays for videos outside of this one on my channel. But be sus all you like - you do you boo!
@@VanessaJoy scepticism is healthy, no? And your response does address the question that I asked, which I appreciate. Your final line I appreciate less however.
I’m preordering it
Woot!
Go for it!
For me the biggest surprise was the price of 1499. I figured 1999 for the initial price, and likely 200-400 dollar price drops during peak sale times.
Once I realized it wouldn't be F1.2 I mostly lost interest, as I am alright to adapt the Tamron 35mm F1.4 SP to my R series bodies. It's fine that this lens is F1.4, I'm just saying I am still happy with my current 35mm. It's one of the only lenses I'm still adapting, as I just don't use it a lot but it is handy for shooting bands in poorly lit venues. But then, I don't have a 28-70mm F2...
preordered!
congrats!
Great stuff;) but I stay with my 35 RF 1.8;)
A solid lens!
when the photographer is 10x better looking than the model
Yep, I echo that sentiment! 😊
I've shot Canon DSLR's for years, but I'm switching to Nikon, it's just so much more affordable and they have some 3rd party support. Their 35mm 1.4 is over a $1000 cheaper.
I can finally retire my sigma ef 35mm f1.4. The auto focus will be a lot better my bag will be lighter! #Winning
woot!
I have the holy trinity of lens, there is absolutely no reason for me to get this lens, screw it I’m buying it!!
😂
How do you feel about Canon’s 50mm RF f/1.2 L lens for video?
It’s as solid as it gets but it depends on what you’re shooting of course
Not a bad price for the quality
not bad at all
More expensive heavier than the Sony GM I expected a more competitive price, Canon really needs to fix their prices or allow Sigma rf versions
Also no option for no click or click aperture?? Why????
@@Riskbreaker2009 Tamron and sigma rf lenses are in development as we speak.
Tempting
5.35 vs 5.45 who has got better lunderarms 😅
🤣 love this - see? We need more women in RUclips who have a sense of humor
I'd consider it if I were shooting Canon. No photo centric aperture ring is no deal breaker for me
Do you usually change your aperture through a lens ring?
Just order mind
Haha
What's wrong with the audio ?
???
I was also shooting weddings but then I realized what a bad contract the groom was lured into and how he would struggle for many years to keep the bride happy and if she found another guy she could cancel and get half of his belonings. I simply could not see myself in the mirror when I was part of the celebration of this poor contract and documenting it with photos.
Haha not if there’s a prenup
the link in the description is to a dead link Vanessa
Which one? The one for the lens works fine: www.adorama.com/car3514.html?sterm=3Dw1YRXI3xyPRMbWK%3ARv4U%3AjUkHXH4zAEWJO2Q0&
@@VanessaJoy the site must have been down yesterday when I was watching your video. Now its working. Thanks
Just take my $$$ already
haha right?
Don't equivocate. Just go buy it. You only live once.
lol
I can't survive without my kidneys 😅
😀🤩🤩🙂😊
:-)
That’s not VCM. That’s USM focus module.
??
I’m sad...this means the 24mm will have a dead aperture ring for stills as well. Sony will have zero need to respond to Canon’s 24, because of Canon Cripplehammer 😢 I’ve been praying for a 24mm F1.2...it’s never going to come
That only took like 5 or 6 years.
I used to pair an EF 35 1.4 or 135 f/2 with a 24-70mm frequently, depending. Never tried the f/2 zoom - but it certainly works for you! Nice video BTW.
And they still didn’t get it right. Boo on the iris ring.
wow the entire video is AD for her products -
Um how? I didn’t mention a single product I sell.
„Real world“ review when she is an ambassador or „explorer“ of the brand… whatever you call it.
Let‘s wait for more reviews… still a nice look at it though.
Oh that’s right, because my vast experience, extensive use of the gear, my opinion and apparently my integrity are all null and void then. Gotcha 👍
It was a good practical, balanced demo that shows it in the real world vs some dude bloviating about specs and “image quality” in his basement. At the end of the day you should rent the thing, or at least give it a spin at the store, and see if it’s for you. Even she will tell you that you can only get so much from watching gear videos on RUclips.
женщина зачем его так трясти 😵🥴
Das Objektiv ist ein Grund zu Sony zu wechseln! Canon hat mich mal wieder enttäuscht!
You do you boo 😜
Your pants are too big! Or is your belt too tight?
I started working out more 🤷🏻♀️
@VanessaJoy Ah ha -nice! Hawt. Now go shopping.
where is my RF24mm f1.4 L 😥
haha maybe that's next?
It’s really very sad that Canon comprised on making it an f1.2L and opted for 1.4 to accommodate videographers who already have a dedicated cinema line which btw doesn’t make compromises to accommodate stills photographers.
As a portrait photographer who shoots in a cinematic style I want as shallow a depth of field I can get out of a 35mm. I personally would love a 35mm f1. Been waiting for an RF 35 1.2 for years now. So disappointed. The only thing I’m pleased about is the rear filter holder since I use ND filters for mixing flash and ambient. That’s a nice touch. I wish the aperture ring had the option to have the clicks stops rather than smooth silent movement which would be great for stills. Canon stop making photographers compromise for videographers!
@vanessajoy @canon #canon.
the EF version was a 1.4 as well wasn't it? Not sure you'll see much of a difference between the 1.2 v 1.4 but I can see how if you're used to the 50 1.2 you'd want the 35 to be 1.2 as well!
@@VanessaJoy I have the 50 and the 85 1.2. Was looking to complete the trinity. Also since you gain DOF with wide angles faster is better
