Bought a new 2020 Rav4 before the price went up. It is a basic LE model. No push start, no stop/start, no sunroof, no alloy wheels, which means less trouble in the long run. It is made in Japan (JT vin). With basic maintenance, it will run for a long time without repair.
I can’t believe I’ve been following you for 20 years!!! I was just thinking when I was a teenager posting on your question board everyday learning how to fix my cars!
Good evening Scotty! If we could harness your enthusiasm, it would power a whole city! Used cars are the way to go, I average about 170,000 miles on my last 5 vehicles and I paid between $1500 and $7500 (four of them were Toyotas). I've had my Solara up a buck and a quarter several times!
A new study showed that electric vehicles actually have 80% increase in maintenance costs! Hybrids made by Toyota are so debugged so well their even lower than gas. I paid $1,500 extra for AWD on my 2023 Prius. Love it. Glad I didn't go with the Tesla.
@jordonSEE I suggest you take a look at ProjectFarms undercoating comparison video. Oil was at the bottom of the list in terms of performance. Might I suggest Cosmoline undercoating 👍
If you want "zero" maintenance, then just walk. No gas to buy, not really much to break down, and heck, it might be good for you from a n exercise/health standpoint. And it's FREE. Sorry Scotty, there is nothing such as a "zero maintenance" vehicle. All cars required tires and brakes, at the least, and those are wearable items. I know what you mean though -- one you're not fixing left and right. Some of the items mentioned are not true though. For examples, rotors. If you drive regularly, they generally do not build up surface rust, and the ydon't rust away like Scotty says the ydo. Maybe after 20 years, but my Silverado which I drove hard a lot, had rotors for about 5-6 years, no rust. The only reason they had to be changed was because I would pull trailers that didn't have their own brakes (regular brakes, they had surge brakes but those are junk and don't help much). So the brakes experienced a lot of wear. Same for rust. Even after 11 years in the north (Illinois) the only thing that rusted was the very corner of the tailgate (only about 1" square). Anything can last if it's cared for, and likewise, anything can fall apart if it's misused or not cared for, Even Toyotas.
what do you think you said here you doofus? there's obviously no such thing as a car that requires ZERO maintanence. He's just telling us what to buy to on average avoid the most car related headaches.
I purchased a 2013 RAV4 FWD three years ago with 76K miles, it has 109K miles on it now and the vehicle runs beautifully. I put Akabono breaks all around it and had to replace the valve cover gasket, it's been bullet proof. I drive in sports mode around town, eco on long trips, the RAV is an excellent machine.
With AWD, if your vehicle gets a flat tire, depending on the tire wear, you may need to purchase four new tires. Been there, done that. I'll stick with FWD.
The first and most important 3 things to check are the underbody for rust and frame integrity, the underbody for rust and frame integrity, and the underbody for rust and frame integrity.
I like a comfortable car.. but toyota's seats have gotten narrow and short.. and now in the later generation rav4 my head is way too close to the windshield and A pillar..
Yesterday, Scotty had a customer that traded an AWD rav4 for a Subaru because the Toyota AWD couldn’t handle Vermont snow. Perhaps Toyota AWD is not really that good.
You don't want to power wash your car too often. It's moisture, plain and simple. You need to oil your vehicle if your state uses salt. Krown is an excellent solution.
I like Scott s videos, learned a lot. However, new and used car market and its sales environment has changed after pandemic. Cars got more expensive and there is not the same flexibility, room for price negotiation. Like it or hate but it is a different environment now. When Scotty tells just walk away from fresh paint, there are other factors to consider in our days before u pull the trigger
if you watch autoline recently they have increased the new car price 40 percent on purpose....make more money by selling less ..that is the new plan...nothing to do with pandemic
The RAV 4 is indeed a big seller and very popular where I live on the East coast. I knew someone who bought a brand new one and an oil change package with it. The dealership refuses to change the oil less than every 10,000 miles and this is something that makes me worry. Also, this RAV 4 sure is loud for a new vehicle. Always hearing the motor idling from inside the cabin and some kind of high pitched computer squeal from the center console. They say all of this is normal but discourages me from ever buying one. The owner I know now has 35,000 miles on it after 2 and a half years and has NOT had any problems, so in fairness it has been a great vehicle for him!
Interesting. I have a 16 Rav. Limited. Quiet. Dealer oil package as well. 5000k mile changes no problem. Just turned 50k miles. Most importantly, wife loves it.
I think they all vary depending on the year and the way they are driven and cared for. My friend's is a 2021 and they swear up and down at the dealership you can go 10,000 miles between oil changes. I don't know about the noise, but it's definitely there for their model.@@davidiverson4072
my 2021rav4 limited hybrid is hard to tell it is running or not it is very quiet gets over 40 mpg and has as much quickness as my ram pickup when the hemi-engine
The reason we fire fighters and first responders HATE hybrid and electric vehicles... the when the batteries ignite, we need a special powder to put them out or OCEANS of water. Water makes the fires worse if there aren't OCEANS of it. More than a firehouse can provide. The batteries are also high voltage and can kill a human in a split decond.
I am partial to the Toyota's made in Japan. We had a RAV4 V6 made in Canada. (2011) With tons and tons of minor body issues before 80000 miles (unreal)
bought a used Nissan eNV200 for 11 grand (fully electric), doing nothing on it. and yes, of course the battery will catch fire and burn me alive while being locked in the car, but maybe I have a few more weeks until it happens
In 2016 I saw this 2006 Honda Element on display in a Honda dealer's lobby. I asked why they were showing a 10 year old vehicle. Well, a woman had traded it in with 445,000 miles and never needed to fix anything other than typical maintenance issues. And, the body was in pretty good shape too.
Seemingly so! That's A LOT of miles in 10 years. She might have been a salesperson or something. When my friend sold roof gutters and windows he'd drive 200 miles a day. @@MichaelTheophilus906
These rav4 under 100k are really low maintenance. Oil change, brakes, air filter(engine and cabin), tires, trans fluid drain and fill, front/rear diff drain and fill, coolant drain and fill. All simple to do.
I bought a 2014 rav 4 xle. Had it about a year. Noticed that after a while oil level will get low. Had it checked for leaks and cylinders scoped for any damage. Nothing out of the ordinary. I believe it’s burning oil. Is this common with the 2.5 engine? If so is it worth fixing?
That canadian code reader is under a hundred, would be less OEM given volume. So one wonders why when cars have all the data in them, and they have huge screens, why can't you just read it with the car?
In addition to my Rav4 we drive a $22,000 2011 Prius. We never have had a single repair, and to my husband’s friend who taunted him about the batteries na na na na na! Keep on repairing your Fords and Nissans! Oh….all are J cars, made in Japan!
Anti rust oil spray every year.... If you live in one of those crappy parts of the world where it snows, that's the best thing you can do to prevent rust.
I still wouldn't mind having my 2008 rav4. It was fuel efficient and i can beat my iwn 2019 chevy silverado off the line no problem. It was quick and nimble.
In Germany, they have a tool that measures the thickness of the paint. If it’s a different thickness on one panel or another, it could indicate a paint job/accident.
I thought it was a good way to check for it. If it’s a common tool, seemed easy to do, we should do it as well. Maybe some do, but I’ve never seen it before.
Absolute....in comparison to all other carmakers for example my one i reved this up to 5000 RPM (but only when its absolutely decent warmed up & when this amazing smoothly engine is with fully syntethic oil equipped, equipped ore full filed only) and the engine is qiet and smoothly as can be, absolutely no oil consumption, absolutely sippy sporty fast, if possible very great suspending even better than my wifes new 2021 rav4 wit its very solid firm almost stiff suspension, i don't like its still better robust feeling than the older Hyundai Kia up to 2018 but still a to rough "bony" suspension compared to the almost great limusine like confortable suspension. Only a 1980tees Cadillac does it beat. But the back then Cadillacs can't mess in all other things with this awesome Rav4. Since i refreshed this & that on my 2017 Hybrid Rav, i reached even over 50mpg with no no issues with normally driving behavior. In my case it's a really 4wheler Hightech car, who will issues less last for sure over many decades without serious problems. I have a very sensitive feeling for everything and this rav4 have a extreme Toyota typical smooth gear set, what with decent lubrication stuff can't realy wear out once u don't tune around nitro crap ect. I can yust recomend 2 car brands as the real best, for all around Toyota, and for truck's and pickups those Isuzu diesel trucks, off course Toyota pickups are really smooth Isuzu is more truck like rough, but extremely undestroiable😊 The engine is even more solid that Hilux ones and the rest is AISIN DENSO ECT EQUIPMENT 😂😂😂But 10k cheaper than Toyotas king cars.... Btw the rav4 up to 2019 is still better than the new oneok the look is simply matter of opinion, i like from outside both very much, the older looks more younger Hightech sippy like, the newer more solid, robust somehow truck like, both great but the newer have unfortunately more plastic, and unfortunately the very much more for your lungs poisoniusly direct injection. Older is still more healthy.
Maybe down in Texas they don’t rust if he gets snow and use salt on the roads Toyotas or rust wagons like everything else they don’t last forever they rust away and I don’t know when the last time you visited a Toyota or a Honda dealership but you gotta make an appointment to get your car in there and get serviced because they’re so busy because you know what their cars breakbreak like GM Ford Chrysler, Hyundai, Jaguar, any other car maker, Toyotas and Hondas brake they do it all the time
Obviously you haven’t driven a Toyota. Yes, I drove a Voyager and it needed a rebuilt motor and transmission, both before 60,000 miles. And don’t try to say it was not maintained. It WAS! I drove a Caravan and it stalled if I was in line, like a bank. I traded it for the Voyager after one year because the dealer could not find a problem after repeated visits there.
Great stuff to know. Twenty to thirty minutes beforehand can avoid spending thousands of dollars afterwards, but you also need to know what to check out, and how. 👍🏽
The only disadvantage of being older Toyota's like this one is that is has Toyota's outdated infotainment system that doesn't have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. If you want that, then you would have to replace the Toyota unit with an aftermarket unit that has Android Auto.
Purchase a pre-owned vehicle and enjoy cost savings. Upgrade your outdated system with Telsa style integrated screen guilt free! Cheaper auto insurance as well
MAINTAINED Toyota's can last 2ish decades depending on if they're in the salt belt without undercoating each year, no maintenance has been done etc. Always have a car checked out before buying it along with the codes read.
I'm waiting for a 2024 Rav4 Hybrid and will try to get it to 17 or 18 years. So I need to change the oil more often than the manual says { most people live in the "severe" category for changing oil }. And the first oil change will be at 200 miles, then again at 300 miles and each time I will use a 20 micron oil filter { they have 75% less engine wear over 10 years, than the standard 40 micron oil filters }. After the first 2 oil and oil filter changes, I'll change the oil every 5,000 miles and change the other fluids like a year or two earlier than the manual says { the manual is the BARE MINIMUM maintenance needed to keep your warranty valid but is NOT set up for you to get the longest life out of the car }. I will undercoat it as soon as I get it AND before each winter { I live in the salt belt and I've never had any rust on any of my cars at the 8 year mark, when I sell my cars, then buy new }. I'll change the transmission oil every 45,000-ish miles. and keep the battery filter clean so the battery doesn't overheat and have a shorter lifespan etc. I hope this helps anyone who didn't know this stuff was 100% important to get the longest life from their vehicle.
@@s-man3684 yes I liked the rav4 exterior better and it’s drive train. They didn’t have many in stock so it would be a waiting game. The Hondas were readily available. The CRV hybrid comes standard sport. I think I would do that. I loved the inside of the CRV better. The space and comfort and quietness of the Honda made the mid level Toyota feel small inside and a little cheap. I wish the Toyota just used the Honda interior.
2 hours and 1,800 likes. Amazing! From the minute I Started to watch it, the count meter went up about 200 more as It ran, LOL, This guys has it figured out. Isn't this rig the highest theft vehicle?
Not too many legit decent ppl in this world anymore, i think most ppl that have watched scotty a few times knows hes prolly the most honest mechanic in the world, just seems like a 100% nice guy all around. I would definitely take his car advice over anybody elses out there.
Owning your own tools is "major in my book" (not a problem). UNAPPRECIATION" of your efforts and hard work is a bad habit in the workplace, this is why you have to familiarize yourself with State Laws that prohibit such foul conduct in the workplace especially" should this conduct become abusive/it's already harassing !🤨
My neighbor bought a new Rogue in Jan. 2023. It needed a new motor after 200 miles. She is 82 and the dealer wanted to know what she did to it. Rogues frequency of repair numbers are not great. She bought the Rogue because no Venzas or Rav4s were available. I would not have accepted it back after a new motor at 200 miles.
I bought a 2009 RaV4 Sport Limited Edition, with Sunroof back in 2011 and it still runs well. Do the regular maintenance. I only changed the battery once and the tire as well. So far 95K and still runs great. Looking to upgrade for something bigger csuss of the family. You can never go wrong with Toyota. Si es Toyota tiene que ser Bueno😂
I bought same model but after that found little vibrations on 2 to 3rd gear. Any one knowa the issue or leave it like that or any thing i can do to fix? Its already done 240000 Km's
I have to agree with you on those ugly looking tablet style infotainment screens. They look like an afterthought or that they were trying to copy Tesla. 🤢🤢
Can get a much better deal on used vehicles coming off lease over buying new, but even better to buy from individuals that want to buy a new vehicle every three or four years. Everything is over priced now though, so I am not even sure what a good deal is.
I’ve been aware of Scotty’s videos in the periphery of my YT recommendations for quite a while. It occurred to me that his channel appeals to a very peculiar niche - people who care so little about cars that cheap reliability is the number one consideration, yet care enough about cars to subscribe to a channel to watch someone talk about cars.
Cheap reliability because most people want and need a car that is two things: 1. Affordable and 2. Reliable and that's because most people do not have 100k sitting around to spend on a car and neither do they have the money, time or desire to fix a lemon pos car that breaks down every other week.
There is no zero maintenance vehicle but you can research used cars by model and year etc and a lot of Toyotas are pretty good still make sure you get a good year. Obviously tires, belts, oil, air filteres, heck even sliding doors if it’s s minivan always tons of maintance but sure you’re less likely it’s seems to blow a gasket on certain vehicles etc

In addition to my Rav4 we drive a $22,000 2011 Prius. We never have had a single repair, and to my husband’s friend who taunted him about the batteries na na na na na! Keep on repairing your Fords and Nissans! Oh….all are J cars, made in Japan!
How much is a new battery though ?

Anti rust oil spray every year.... If you live in one of those crappy parts of the world where it snows, that's the best thing you can do to prevent rust.
I thought only me and my brother thought markers smelled like bananas.😂
One year later and my 2010 bumblebee is stil running, better than ever now brother. 😉🙃😁😎
Camaro?
I still wouldn't mind having my 2008 rav4. It was fuel efficient and i can beat my iwn 2019 chevy silverado off the line no problem. It was quick and nimble.
In Germany, they have a tool that measures the thickness of the paint. If it’s a different thickness on one panel or another, it could indicate a paint job/accident.
Scotty has used one of those before. The average person wouldn't, though.
They have the same tool in America 🇺🇸
They are common elec gauge density meters.
Scotty, how about you have a video on Honda's CR-V or old Honda Civics DX 2002.
How can I truly be sure of the Type of Damage, and How Much Damage, Was Really Done To The Vehicle Before I Decide To Purchase?
Great stuff to know. Twenty to thirty minutes beforehand can avoid spending thousands of dollars afterwards, but you also need to know what to check out, and how. 👍🏽
I’d rather buy a regular gas car than an electric car. If an electric car catches fire, you’re done.
well...any car would be done lol
Super white hot heat 🔥 too. Electric doors no real switches, you'd burn to a crisp trying to get out.
No more likely to go on fire than an internal COMBUSTION engine, clue in the name.
Have it oil spray under and body panels
Not only the fire risk but if the government decides its time to run rolling black outs or worse it's game over for travel unless you have a horse.
The only disadvantage of being older Toyota's like this one is that is has Toyota's outdated infotainment system that doesn't have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. If you want that, then you would have to replace the Toyota unit with an aftermarket unit that has Android Auto.
Very informative, thanks for that.
Thanks for the info. I have a 2007 CR-V so I'm not concerned with infortainment. I just plug in my phone into the mini plug.
Purchase a pre-owned vehicle and enjoy cost savings. Upgrade your outdated system with Telsa style integrated screen guilt free!
Cheaper auto insurance as well
Scotty I have a 2001 to grand marquis Adjust paddle do work and my abs lights on plus traction control is on
MAINTAINED Toyota's can last 2ish decades depending on if they're in the salt belt without undercoating each year, no maintenance has been done etc. Always have a car checked out before buying it along with the codes read.
I still drive my 2002 Saturn sc1 ..541kms...NO rust ..!🤣🤣
Sweet RAV 4. The Lexus there looks nice too.
How much is an average oil undercoat cost ?
$150-ish, depending on the size of the vehicle and where you live.@@wellnesscanceradvocate8564
That beautiful description rivals Shakespeare, Scotty! 🤣 Weeks well spent mate. ;-)
Maintenance free 89 to 95 Chevrolet C-10 1500 best truck ever made
Hey Scotty looking at 2022 Honda accord hybrid touring. I’ve heard that a hybrid battery can be a headache, how big is this headache and your opinion?
Used cars that are saveable are not easy to find. The govt is paying wreckers to dump them so even parts are hard to get.
Is this car from Texas?
Evs are not a good idea. There’s a reason why that market segment is panicking so badly and dead teslas just sit.
Sure Scotty!
Would you get a CRV or RAV4? I like the outside of the Rav more but the inside of the CRV more.
Drive both hybrids and take your pick, both hybrids are decent vehicles. I'd stay away from the turbo 4 cylinder of Honda.
Thank you
2 hours and 1,800 likes.
Mr. Scott Thankyou. When are you gonna get a free car for you to evaluate. They need consider cele😂brity car review. Keep up the good work ❤
Owning your own tools is "major in my book" (not a problem).
UNAPPRECIATION" of your efforts and hard work is a bad habit in the workplace, this is why you have to familiarize yourself with State Laws that prohibit such foul conduct in the workplace especially" should this conduct become abusive/it's already harassing !🤨
Hi Scott. You will not like that, but my Naissan Xtrail (Rogue) is by far better than this RAV4. You are the best 😊
@@lindap.p.1337 200 miles!!! What a bad luck !!! It's a factory default obviously. And it dosent mean that the Rogue is bad car.
😂😂😂
I bought a 2009 RaV4 Sport Limited Edition, with Sunroof back in 2011 and it still runs well. Do the regular maintenance. I only changed the battery once and the tire as well.
So far 95K and still runs great.
Looking to upgrade for something bigger csuss of the family.
You can never go wrong with Toyota.
Si es Toyota tiene que ser Bueno😂
I heard highlanders are great. Any opinions? I got a rav4 as well
I bought same model but after that found little vibrations on 2 to 3rd gear.
Any one knowa the issue or leave it like that or any thing i can do to fix?
Its already done 240000 Km's
scotty plz tell me y u move ur hands in such way? please tell me
Nice...but you didn't even look at the fluids😢
I have to agree with you on those ugly looking tablet style infotainment screens. They look like an afterthought or that they were trying to copy Tesla. 🤢🤢
...but those in the video sit at an angle that causes a reflection making them often useless.
Toyota seats are not comfortable 😩 what does Scotty think of Subaru????
Subaru's are very good and reliable car.
That is why I bought a Honda CR-V. The seats are more comfortable than the Rav-4. I like the RAV-4, but I really like the CR-V better.
Can get a much better deal on used vehicles coming off lease over buying new, but even better to buy from individuals that want to buy a new vehicle every three or four years. Everything is over priced now though, so I am not even sure what a good deal is.
I need to buy a car and I need Scotty to come with me lmao
I’ve been aware of Scotty’s videos in the periphery of my YT recommendations for quite a while.
It occurred to me that his channel appeals to a very peculiar niche - people who care so little about cars that cheap reliability is the number one consideration, yet care enough about cars to subscribe to a channel to watch someone talk about cars.
Cheap reliability because most people want and need a car that is two things: 1. Affordable and 2. Reliable
and that's because most people do not have 100k sitting around to spend on a car and neither do they have the money, time or desire to fix a lemon pos car that breaks down every other week.
That's a 2013 to 2018 RAV4 - They changed the body style in 2019.
I have a 2007 v6 rag 4 with 198000 runs like me brand new!
Good Afternoon Scotty!!
Scotty...you can't beam me up ,but don't bring me down matey ........id pay double for a good used car over a new crap car 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Look on the bright side, you can roast marshmallows 😅
Lexus GX is ultra reliable
Used car sellers worst nightmare: buyer shows up with Scotty in tow. 😂
I need a zero maintenance car for my wife. she has a habit of telling me about strange noises a month after they start.
Replace the wife, not the car.
@@BV-Auto LOL, wishful thinking. THAT replacement would cost me a lot more than a new car.
...a zero-maintenance wife, that would be more like it.
Im from corpus christi, the only salt we would get is from driving on the beach.
used cars are just as expensive as new car
Mr Kilmer, do you do car buying consulting?
Go to any toyota dealer its full of broken down toyotas being worked on u gotta wait a month for service
Yes, go to any hospital it's full of sick and injured people too, what's your point?
Love my Tesla 💞
No maintenance cars dont exist. At least not for long. Even a Toyota/Lexus needs an oil change.
Remember folks change your oil and filter regularly keep on top
Rust protect the car
