The Important History of Disney's Mousercise

  • Mousercise debuted on Disney Channel during the 1980s exercise craze. While it might seem weird, it's actually a small part of a larger movement of change that saw both men and women change how they workout and where they workout. It was also a great platform for Kellyn Plasschaert and Steve Stark, the show's two stars. Mousercise helped launch the Disney Channel, but it's lasting impact of fun and silly exercise is something that's lasted and the nostalgic feeling for Mousercise currently has Disney considering a show for the future.

    What is your sport/exercise/movement of choice? I personally love riding my exercise bike at home while I watch TV, but I do like going for walks in places I don't know to familiarize myself with the city I live in more.

      Walking in a similar way you describe has always been fun. I actually love yardwork as well - including doing group "clean ups" of public spaces.

    This was far more significant than I expected. I was a young adult in the 1980s, so I remember the "aerobics" craze well. There was actually a movie based on competitive aerobics that was obviously inspired by "Flashdance," which was itself aerobic adjacent. (Not to mention "Staying Alive," of which we shall speak no more.) All of which means that although I was too old to have been into Mousercise, I was certainly aware if it, and enjoyed this thoughtful and interesting analysis. Special Kudos to you both for embracing the 80s workout aesthetics with such gusto and good humor.

      Joe and I often reflect on the videos that are our favorites but didn't become successful right away. This video is definitely one that didn't resonate initially with people, but I really enjoyed going down the rabbit hole and making this one. The added workout routine Jack and I did was great. We shot that after midnight at my house for way longer than was shown. We constantly messed up.

    Wow- I never knew of Mousercise or the Disco Album! Your workout outfits were amazing. Love how your ending segway into another video! Well done :) Going to show my husband later, I know he'll appreciate this!

      Thank you! In the last year I've worked on creating videos so that each of the main "narrative" videos connects to the next. I'm really excited about where they are going and the fun we've had in between the history pieces.

      I actually never had Disney Channel as a kid. My parents didn't have cable and at my grandparents house they weren't going to fork over an additional cost to add it to their cable service. I only got to see it on free preview weekends a few times a year, but this and the Alice in Wonderland live action show were so crazy to me that they are a childhood memory.

      I've listened to that song so many times in the past 3 weeks because it gets played in the background of so many things I had to download or research. I've probably made some good money for the Olivia Newton-John estate because of the amount of times I listened to it.

      When I told a few people that I was making this video, as it was kind of in the works for a while, I had several people tell me I needed to get some of the merchandise from Disneyland. I live a few miles from the park and stop by Downtown Disney at least once a month, but I never saw any of it. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough!

      This video’s so good bro. I had no idea any of this existed. I thought Mousercise was just walking around the theme parks really fast 😆

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  10 месяцев назад

      I actually worried when I made the trailer that this was so obscure that people would think I was just making a dumb workout video and calling it "Mousercise". Of any topic I've tackled in recent memory, this is probably the least known. Also, funny enough that you mention the parks, because a few cast member friends told me that at Disneyland they've had Mousercise mornings at work. Like, an instructor is hired to come in before the park opens and they get in a full workout in front of the castle if they choose to join.

      The original plan for this video's Ad-Joe-cent segment was to talk about something else but I remember having that CD as well. I picked it up at the Disney Store at one point and when I told Joe about it, he immediately switched gears and had to make the whole segment about it.

    Why did you include every fitness program that existed in the 80s?
