How Streaming Services Ruined Hollywood

  • Since Netflix changed Hollywood and moved into streaming video on demand, new streaming services have dominated how we watch movies and television. TV shows and films that are exclusive originals to services can only be seen behind the paywall, there is so much to watch that not everything gets advertised, and financially it's all a disaster for both Hollywood and us, the consumer. What was once a cheaper alternative to cable has now become more expensive than ever and has killed the terrestrial tv market as well as movie theaters and has taught us all to stay home and skip the ads. How can things change or can they?

    Convenience killed story telling and variety in entertainment. Without VHS/DVD sales to balance the cost of making films, many movie genres died. Dramas, comedies, romance, historical films fell by the wayside and replaced in large part with spectacle movies. Many of which are absolutely trash. Without the ability to earn money via DVD sales to balance box office, executives just don't take risks on art and/or story telling anymore and instead opt for the vapid eye candy that we gobble up like rats pounding the feeder bar. The prevalence of streaming is exactly why.

  • @sakunaruful
    @sakunaruful 5 месяцев назад +8

    For streaming, it can also be difficult for films or shows to be cult classics because they’re buried underneath all the super popular shows that obtain more exposure due to being advertised on Netflix’s Top 5 list or on the Nielsen ratings.

    • @ModernMouse

      I definitely wanted to hit on that since I felt like anything added to a service basically doesn't exist on the front page after a week unless it's the most popular thing.

    As far as Coyote Vs Acme, I'm devastated by that. I rarely jave interest in contemporary movies nowadays. But Coyote was one I was looking forward to years. I really hope we get to see it. And I have faith we will. Whether thats from a leak, or otherwise. But with it being uears out that we still haven't seen Bathirl or Scoob 2, my confidence level isn't as high as id like it to be. But someone has a copy of it somewhere. Look at how they saved Toy Story 2, because the pregnant employee was working from home, and had a copy saved on her computer. And that was in the 90s, with ancient technology. You're telling me that in an age where working from home is common, and just a few years ago, mandatory, a bunch of people dont have this movie? Obviously there's legal reasons. That goes without saying. But I have hope it can get leaked "accidentally."

    There's a local theater that does stuff like Alamo. They've got decent food and drinks, but they also advertise their special events like trivia nights and classic movies. And for the big tentpole movies that people are almost guaranteed to see, my cosplay group brings out our superheroes to do meet & greets in the lobby, which adds even more value to the experience. It's fun for us, and also means the cool movie theater gets to stay in business.
    That said - I agree. Something needs to change. I feel like the strikes pushed at the seams of an already bursting model, and thankfully seems to have worked before it exploded with greed. Slowing down, investing in new voices and "smaller" movies, changing the distribution process - all of that can only help, right?

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  5 месяцев назад

      That sounds incredible. With the growing cosplay scene, I think it's a smart move to invite them to the films. It gives them a platform and as an audience member, I get to take photos with the character from the film I saw. It's cheap publicity! This is great!

    I'm glad you brought up that netflix used to be a dvd-by-mail service. That has seemingly been erased from everyone's minds. Or so we think. Everyone thinks about Netflix as a streaming company. But whats never talked about is how Netflix spent $10 billion a year, for a decade just to get people to "unlearn" that it was ever anything other than a streaming service. And they spent around $100 billion just to essentially change their definition and Wikipedia page. And after you spend $100 billion, I guess its fair you earned yourself a slang term. I mean come on, they greenlit 160+ something movies and tv shows in one single year? That's insane. And people wondered why netflix was cancelling programs left and right once they started losing money.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  5 месяцев назад

      Netflix really pushed streaming hard and I feel like streaming movies, tv, and music became such a change in life that nobody really thought about how it would later impact the entertainment industry. We see the patterns with tech companies now. Uber and Doordash are getting noticed by the population at large for having changed the landscape only to overcharge after monopolizing. It's a shame we didn't recognize what Netflix was trying to do with their spending in the early 2010s when they pushed for everyone to convert to streaming.

    The only films that are able to turn a profit are established IP, So I feel like the best strategy from the media companies perspective is to initially test the IP through inexpensive tv, then when its proven they're able to create a higher budget film for a guaranteed profit. Like if a Stranger Things, or Squid Game film was created and sent to a theatrical run, that would be a guaranteed Billion dollar film.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  5 месяцев назад +1

      There are both pros and cons to this. In a way, this is already happening. The Mandalorian (which I know is already an established IP in Star Wars) is moving to theaters rather than having a final season. Another problem that Hollywood is having is not being able to get people to theaters to see original films. 90% of the biggest box office films of the last 25 years has been a sequel or attached to an IP in some way. While that's fine sometimes, I think we need to guide audiences back into spending money on original films. How we do that is an entirely different video I haven't prepared to make.

      It sounds like, at least on a business level, it would help boost revenue. As someone who personally loves seeing older films in theaters, I get why they are busy. Familiarity, but also the chance to show someone a movie you like. I've been making my way through the AFI Top 100 and the Sight and Sound lists and any chance I get to see one of those films on a big screen, I take it! Slash down the executive pays and the stupid high rates of so-called 'stars' who can't even open a movie by themselves unlike the previous gen. Also, give people what they want, not what you want because you fiddled with everyone in the industry and now go on a holier than thou tirade. Streaming is great, ngl, but they will lose if they keep increasing prices like this.

I was never into streaming services but with Disney plus, then they started to raise their coast way too much. and i said nope, and canceled them. i always knew streaming service's were kind of killing the industry which I'm sad about since hard to keep up and honestly as a bit of a reason we keep getting over flow block busters like iron man , rather than comedy, i was wondering what happened to comedy like we use to get, then you stated it and it made sense now. However, i do hope they work on this in the future because i can see a big crash coming when things are collapsing which i am already seeing with streaming services being bought out by others sadly. anyways this is just my opinion :) i love your videos as always and always excited whenever a new one drops. thank you for the awesome content.

    Personally, I never understood how binging became such a common practice. Just because you CAN watch a whole show in a weekend doesn’t mean you should, and binging by definition is a bad thing, so why would you do it? Do people have that little self control? Maybe I’m just old fashioned, but I never watch more than 2 episodes of something a day. It cheapens the experience otherwise and I simply don’t have time for more. I’d gladly wait between episode releases or watch ads if it would help Hollywood get back to normal.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  5 месяцев назад +1

      There were some very rare cases where I binged 5 episodes in a day, but I'm with you here. Rarely do I ever watch something past 2 episodes. Even movies! If it's longer than 2 hours, I'll cut it in half and return to it the following day if I have the option at home. I feel like I have so many other things to do than to just sit on the couch and watch everything available to me. Also, as I've gotten older, I recognize how important getting a full night's worth of sleep is rather than watching "one more" and then getting 4 hours before working the next day.

    • @I_WANT_MY_SLAW
      @I_WANT_MY_SLAW 5 месяцев назад

      I 100% disagree. It's one thing be "impatient" if it's free. But we're paying a lot of our hard earned money for their service. It's not about lacking self control. I don't know where you came up with that.
      You might've had a strong argument 5 years ago, even though I would've disagreed then. But now, it's a poor argument. Binging isn't always bad. And sometimes it's necessary. In nature, animals binge all the time because they don't know when their next meal is coming, or do feed their offspring. And it's become the same way with streaming. You need to binge now, because you don't when their gonna take it off their streamer. Years ago, there was belief that whatever Netflix makes, will stay on Netflix forever. And so on for all the streamers. But now that's not the case. They can *and will* remove any programming at any time, for any reason, or no reason whatsoever.
      And there's no reason whatsoever to not release them all at once. On television it makes sense because there's timeslots and a schedule. But there's no timeslots on streaming. The only reason they do it, is so you can stay subscribed longer, and give them more of your hard earned money, only for them to disrespect you, by removing programming. Why pay to be disrespected? You can get disrespected for free.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@I_WANT_MY_SLAW While I understand the notion to get your money's worth and to watch something before it's gone, there are both social and psychological reasons to not binge. We are currently in a time where, and this isn't entirely streamings fault, we are less social than ever with greater risk of depression and suicide. Psychologists also state that watching television too long can increase your chances of multiple issues like dementia and depression.
      A few years ago, I'd be the first one to stay up until 3am watching something just so that I could avoid spoilers the next day. Now, I've tuned out of that. I'm not online nearly as much as I used to be. I decreased my viewing habits. That's partially on the cost of it, but it's also in desiring to be with people, see new places, etc... To each their own, but for me, I think the communal aspect of tv week to week is still a much more pleasant experience.

    • @I_WANT_MY_SLAW
      @I_WANT_MY_SLAW 5 месяцев назад

      @@ModernMouse I agree with what you're saying. I'm not saying that we should be binging everything all the time 24/7. I'm saying that we should have the option to binge as we see fit considering that we are paying for the service. They should not be the ones making that decision for us. Considering that we are the ones paying them directly for this content. Cable was an entirely different animal. Because cable providers were the middlemen between you, the customer and the networks. You paid your cable provider and The cable company was the one who took all of the profits and then divvied it out between the networks. And every network got there cut regardless of whether we watch that network or not. And we also were not the ones negotiating this. The networks were negotiating with the cable providers. Which I always hated, personally, because anytime they would have any type of disagreement over money, they would take their network off of their service. And then the networks would then point the finger and say "Hey, call your cable provider and tell them to stop being greedy and put us back on their service." And then the cable provider would say " Tell the network to stop being greedy and take the deal that we offer. Because they're ripping you off, and we're only going to give you the best deal and give you the best price as our customer." With streaming, there is no middleman. We're the boss. Yet they're the one deciding how we're allowed to the content were paying them for. And you know what I do when they do that? I drop them. I refuse to pay $20+ a month, only to be told how I'm allowed to consume the content I pay for.

I think the solution I offer towards the end does give people the opportunity to see more things at a better price point, but in terms of television, it was so much nicer a decade ago when it was just Netflix and Hulu. Netflix had the premium stuff, and Hulu ran basic television shows the next day. It was simple and if prices went up, I wouldn't mind paying since there were only the two services.

      @@ModernMouse Also make it so u dont HAVE TO have a credit card to use the service. Not sure if they have this in the States but Netflix here in Canada offers gift cards to pay for Netflix which is great for people like me who are on disability and dont want to have a credit card because of the scams etc. Its hard enough for me to remember whats in my bank account nevermind a credit card. I would have Disney Plus since im a huge Disney fan but the fact u have to use a credit card makes me not able to get the service even thought DISNEY STORE HAS GIFT CARDS.

      This is something that always interests me as I think it depends on how you found the channel and whether it was from something that was before the 2022 change or after. I know that the skits aren't for everyone, nor would anything I do really be for everyone, but I feel like we've spent quite a bit of time thinking about how long the narrative bits should be or how many to add. Don't get me wrong though, I appreciate the feedback.
