As a community we create the environment in which top sc2 players feel comfortable to submit a replay on a show like this. I wish one day I'll be good enough to submit a replay for Harstem's review, but now whenever I watch my replays I see so many mistakes its just constant facepalm (even though Lurkers are imba xD that's not why I'm loosing games LOL)

Sure thing! I don’t play the game (only ever played the campaign, some gimmicky costom maps, and the arcade) but I know general RTS strategies!
From that I can say that starting at around 2:55 he starts to get too focused on the reaper micro and floats up to 350(!) minerals and nearly 150 gas! This probably put him behind by a dozen or so seconds, as he isn’t able to bring his resources down to good levels until around 3:10-3:20 ish. It’s clear he’s exceptionally good! But in gameplay this tight, it just makes even the slightest bit of slack easy to see. It’s like how on a perfectly smooth surface it’s easy to see even the minutest of scratches!
Finally, another known GM making a complaint.
We need more of this.
But not too many because the low level IODIS are the funniest.

Soul probably was like "Free coaching!"
I really think Harstem is a much better coach than he is player, hes a very very good player but often lacks that killer edge the likes of Dark and Parting and HerO have that allows them to win when its most important. Harstem has such a great wealth of knowlage. He understands the little details so well but I think he gets effected by nerves and often doubts himself.

This is basically how my scouting always goes. I see stuff, have no idea what it means, and go on my merry way. About the only reason I bother is occasionally me scouting stuff seems to tilt the opponent who wanted it to be a surprise. Thing is, it still will be a surprise, I've no idea what I'm looking for! OK, fine, see DT shrine I know to add detection or whatever, but beyond that...
After 13 years of my YT sign up, Harstem is the only one that actually makes pressing the notification bell worth while.

It's not that nitpicky I think. It was really telling how the macro mistakes Harstem pointed out caused the game to go like it did. If Souls macro had been on point, he'd be able to stay ahead in eco and not be in trouble at all. Instead he gets the eco of a player who is going all in and the army of a player who is ecoing.

In fact I probably make that same mistake Soul made 90% of my games; I pull off a really successful harass and make the wrong moves after the fact dissolving any lead I may have had.

6200 GM EU Terran here. While I do think PvT is slightly Toss favoured, this game is a classic example of reading the opponent completelywrong. The bio amount (or mine) was never at a critical mass when you are comfortable fighting this much zealots / phoenix.
For me, the strenght of protoss lies within the wide array of playstyle they can force upon a Terran that are not easy to spot, even at higher levels. Differentiating between a greedy build or a pressure timing is sometimes only a bunch of missed gates, forges or a tech building. Furthermore Protoss has per se no bad units to combat Terran (apart from adepts maybe) and can basically transition into whatever comp they prefer to play. Terran on the other hand is rather one dimensional and bound to bio play after the openening phase. Only once supreme lategame (6+ bases) is running, Terran catches up since mech /skye and stationary defenses help a lot to support bio.
I am by no means a progamer, since I am already 38, but strategically I feel Terran is slightly trailing Protoss in the mid-game (where a lot of games tend to go if a Protoss is skilled at holding early pressure).
Only thing i could think of while watching this was my favorite Reynor moment when Harstem interviewed him while playing against souL, and Lambo jumped into the call.

This helped me understand the differences required in the top 10% between a win and a loss. Great content as always!

I remember the game of Harstem vs Soul at Dreamhack Summer Europe, Soul was such a crazy motherf, absolutely destroyed the captain. So i know you can do better, man! Keep up the good work!
Hi level analysis like this really help to understand the game even more. I love SC, but sometimes I do not understand the details on why x player lost or won. The little nitty details you went thru are gold to learn, even if one does not have enough MMR to be in ladder ;)

Lots of great points, awesome to see the nitpicking of high level plays - I just think its funny to see harstem coaching/roasting when his terran is about 1.5k lower than souls - (harstem sits around 5.3k Terran where soul is close to 6.8k)

Seems to me that soul got a bit over-confident. He killed all those probes, and at that point mentally decided he'd already won the game (a fair enough thing to do). But that meant he then got overconfident in the fights, and ignored the things he saw (big toss army) that countered the mental picture he'd already built.

If I may approach the bar on behalf of Mr. Soul:
The case is not whether the Terran made any mistakes, but whether the Protoss' ability to recover via Chrono Boosts is imbalanced relative to the Terran's abilities. As you note at 12:40, thirty extra seconds for the Protoss, with three Nexus, means three extra Chrono Boosts. Each Boost lasts twenty seconds, and will decrease the amount of time to produce a probe from 12 seconds to 8, meaning over those thirty seconds the Protoss can construct almost 12 probes instead of 7 1/2. The number of Chrono Boosts available being tied to the number of Nexus means it is harder to punish a greedy Protoss player in the early game. That is undeniable.
Because Mr. Harstem did not consider this core argument of the case, I ask that this matter be remanded to a lower court pending a ruling on this issue.
maybe, but soul had a late third and didn't consistently produce workers either. If he had a faster third and produced workers consistently, when he would get the third down he would still be ahead in economy because of mules and probably more workers. His other option would have been faster barracks and then push with stim and kill the Protoss third, he could have gone either way but unfortunately was late with both.
Not only did he consider it, he covered it in extensive detail.
The only reason Krystianer could afford to chrono all those probes is that Soul forgot to macro behind the attack. He didn't have the extra barracks, and hadn't started research on stim and combat shields. He didn't start a third command center. There's nothing he could have done after the Hellion attack, so there's no reason for Krystianer to do anything _but_ chrono probes to get back in the game.
@@TrueThanny A slow barracks is a mistake, but does it rise to the level of not guarding your probes/ having 22 killed?
Soul hasn't paid me yet for this defense, but I would posit that explaining how Ghost lost the game doesn't address whether it's imbalanced. That's circular logic - if the game's rules are balanced and fair simply because they're rules, then nothing can be inbalanced. There will always be reasons things go from Point A to Point B.
To say we can only recognize imbalance if a person makes no mistakes - if they play a perfect game - we create an impossible and unjustifiable burden of proof. We move from deciding between imba and suck to simply pointing out how someone sucks.

It didn't cost him the game. It just cost him his early advantage. He lost the game due to taking bad fights.
Here is what he did consider and said. Terran forgot to build his third base and was floating 1000 resources while that hellion drop was happening. Not to mention he was 7 workers behind for 2 minutes with less than 40 workers eco. That should have been 3 base vs 3 base with mules when the Hellion drop ended. The terran then can go fast forth base and get double the protoss eco. Or build for a fast follow up attack forcing the Protoss to invest into tech, defenses and arm, so he can't crono workers. Insttead of that Soul probably went for a beer to celebrate the 20 workers killed and did nothing for a whole minute.
I didn't know "Super GM" was a thing in Starcraft. I've been hearing it a lot in chess recently.
There's actually a huge difference in skill between low GM-Mid GM. Even between high GM and top 20 there is a large skill gap.
I once played for U.S. Chess Championship. Difference between making the tournament and winning the tournament is ... huge. Hyper aggression to get there - failed hyper aggression vs. the best. At least with chess AI, I can pinpoint my mistakes vs. up to 2350 ELO U.S. Above that, the AI doesn't know either a lot of the time. SC2, I had very little clue in this game, except too high resources and late this/that. Stats is a Protoss Super GM.

Captain Harstem being amazing once again
One of the best episodes so far.
So in game time 4:57 we see Terran have a 14 worker lead after killing 22 probes. In just 1 minute and 20 seconds we see Protoss take the worker lead again thats so fast!
No its not too fast. The Protoss was about 7 workers ahead for few minutes before the hellion drop, which is 25-30% more. With Mules call it 20% ahead in mining. That lets you get a third Nexus while the Terran is investing in the hellion drop and looses all of the units. After the drop the Terran had 2 CCs producing workers and the Protoss had 3 nexus with Crono, so that is 4 probes for every 2 SCVs every 11 seconds or so.
It looks unfair, but it only looks like it because the Terran let it happen. If he had started the third CC instead of float 600 minerals it would be 3 base vs 3 base with mules. The Terran then can get a forth base and get infinitely ahead in workers if he lets the Protoss alone to crono workers on 3 base. Or alternatively make infrastructure and tech as Harstem points out forcing the Protoss to spend money in tech and crono Charge or e wiped, while being 14 workers behind in a 3v3 base scenario. Soul just did not build his third base and floated nearly 1000 resources while microing the hellion drop.

@@CoolCraftCool Yeah that's the point. You don't! He was 7 workers ahead for 2 minutes prior to the attack because Soul put everything he had into that drop and forgot to build his third. The army was already out at that point. The tech was not started until a minutes after the attack and all Protoss did for a minute and a half was crono Probes and build a few gates. If the third was done as it should have been whe nthe drop was clean instead of the Terran floating 1000 resources at that point, then a minute later he would have been at 4 bases and 90 workers or had 3 times bigger army and just ended the game.
@@AlexanderVRadev Which is about right protoss have crono and Terran have Mules. If he's not 5+ workers up against Terran with 2 orbitals he would be behind. Soul is 30s late acourding to Harstern which is 2.5 SCVs its not in anyway shape or form the 14 Protoss needs to catch up. Watching it for like the 6th time it seems to me to be not swaping the Barracks and Factory cranking out cheap little mines to keep the Phenixs back and be able to start stim early would have been huge but even then the speed at which Protoss catches up just seems crazy.

I am extremely happy to see what mino details come into play. I think if you can, you should go to Soul and say "Thank you" to him, for sending this in. It is VERY hard to see thie actual level of play, since most people tend to be very dismissive of everything on the internet aka keyboard warriors. As a pro player, it is harder again. I am VERY happy that soul sent this in, and we should thank him, also to encourage other players to do this.
Funny thing is that Soul is higher ranked on Aligulac than Harstem. So if Soul sucks, what does that say about the Captain?

The "Analysis/Coaching of X does not require that you yourself be good at X" statement doesn't equal to "Everyone, who's not good at X is good at coaching/analysis".

Back in HOTS, if Terran sees phoenixes, they always sit back. You can't harass against Phoenixes. You actually want to sit back and win in 1 big fight, because for any fight you lose, the phoenixes will run you down hard.

If it does then all gm terrans need to focus on macro like a gold player and not floading 500 minerals which is a lot in gm league. If ur blind too ur own faults how can u improve then. Lol.
@@jt8936 500 Minerals in gold league? Are you drunk? Protosses reguarly float 800+ minerals and then warp in 8 zealots at the same time.
Try playing protoss to see the other side. You got splash too late? Too bad, the T is just gonna overrun your zealots and stalkers with his bio army and stim. Didn't scout the timing attack T is setting up? Say goodbye to your third bc T has some tanks in a position behind rocks and minerals that can shoot your third still.
@@asdfasdf-mn8iu bro I offrace with protoss and my pvt is 70% at 5k mmr. You can basically slam your head on the keyboard as protoss and you win.
@@caloreen1992 Then what MMR is your main race? And got any proof of that? I play a lot of protoss and in my experience 1/3 of all games are just lost to a 2-base-all in or a timing push with 20 marines and 2 tanks because i didn't go straight into splash.
