  • Here's another Haven of Rest quartet number from 1975. Believe it or not, even though this is their signature song, it is not the title of the actual album, which is called "The King is Coming." The quartet seemed to change personnel a lot during the 70s but for this album, the members are (L to R) Dean McNichols, Paul Sandberg, Jim Bergthold, Frank Alpers, and Ernie Payne.
I really like the sound of the quartet from this era. They feel vibrant and contemporary without loosing their traditional bearings. Dean McNichols doesn't play the pipe organ on every song but if you listen closely to this song, especially at the end, you'll hear the strains of the organ filling in the background quite nicely. I love organ music but I like the limited role of the organ on this and other songs of the album. The arranger for this album is Dick Bolks, another musical genius from this era. The rhythm sections he creates are happy but not heavy.
Enjoy listening to some of the finest music from the long-past world of 1970s gospel music that I think still blesses people today.

My grandmother listened to First Mate Bob on his early broadcasts featuring the singing crew of the Good Ship Grace with their excellent Bible devotionals. It was truly a haven of rest for her. I started listening in 1974, and still listen often on the drive to work via KPOF or KRKS out of Denver. I can still hear, echoing from years ago: “Eight bells and all’s well !”
