- Hey guys! Welcome to my second channel. I know a lot of you have been asking me to make longer-form content, so I've decided to start filming all of my grooms start to finish. I hope you enjoy this new channel and I'm so happy to have you here!
An Akita saved my dog's life.
I was at a friend's house and would bring my happy little cocker spaniel with me every time I visited every week or so. The Akita and my dog got along becuase the Akita loved everyone and every thing. He would gently play with my dog who he could literally throw into the next state if he chose but he was gentle. One visit 3 vicious (they were mistreated) pits broke into my friend's yard and went for my dog. The Akita fought off all 3 of them allowing my Cocker to hide. Akita needed a lot of stitches and was very sore, but I brought him a big meaty bone every time I visited to Thank him for saving my dog. ❤

So glad your baby was OK and that he had a big tough friend to stand up for him!! He deserves all the meaty bones for being such a good boy. We all need friends to stand up for us when the meanies come around! (it's important to remember that dog meanies, like human meanies, are often created by their environments).

i could kill those pitties owners, i have pitts who LOVE absolutely LOVE everyone and everything more love than i ever seen in a human, they must have been VERY mistreated, im glad everyone survived the Akita is a most courageous dog
@@CristinaF210 I love Pitbulls too. I had one and he was so wonderful. It’s very sad how some people mistreat them and use their loyalty for harmful deeds. No animal should suffer but Pitbulls really do suffer the most of any breed for the mistreatment & price they pay for selfish human decisions.
That dog doesn't just like you, he loves you. Akitas are very particular who they let in their circle of friends

Even tho akitas are usually aggressive towards dogs of the same gender, mine is more particular. I had an older dog, a German Shepherd, and a horse since he was a puppy.
Other dogs? Hell na. Fred and Bucephalus? Yes. Just yes 😂
@@rosamunddrag8971 mine was a nightmare dog for everyone but me and my father. he absolutely hated my mother and would literally eat cats, not just kill but eat them if he caught them. But other than that he was a wonderful dog.

I imagine Kuma goes for swims in heaven just so he can have the great groomer of heaven blow dry him. He would pretend that swimming is good for his health or something. Kuma won't let on that it's just because he wants the blow dry. 😅😅
When he growls at the other groomers, it's not because he's unhappy with them, it's just his way of saying "The boss knows how to take care of me. Just bring me to the boss."

As a kid, my father had a favorite Chinese restaurant, whose owner was an old friend of his. It was HER hands that had to prepare his meal, as she knew how he liked his favorite dish prepared, and he could tell right away if it was prepared by someone other than her.
Some men just know what they like.

@@liisarantila7397 I was thinking a gruff, yakuza boss voice, as akita's are originally a Japanese dog and "kuma" actually means "bear" in Japanese. But given how sweet he can be, I'd like to think of him like the character Tatsuya from The Way of the House Husband, a manga/anime about a former yakuza member adjusting to regular Japanese society. The character initially comes off as terrifying to everyone but then ends up being amazing at everything and very upstanding. He of course also befriends all of the old housewives in the neighborhood 😂. Kuma might be prickly, but I think he too would win the hearts of most people.
Kuma is like those manly guys who pretend with their friends like they don't like a spa day but then they thoroughly enjoy their spa day in private 😅

I love Kuma's face. The blow dryer really put him in his happy place.
Every time she would stop brushing to remove hair from the brush, he was like "yo, why did you stop".
After watching this very entertaining video of the grooming of such a magnificent dog, I moved on to the comments column. I was devastated to learn that the mighty Kuma had passed away. He looked so robust, indestructible. His owners must be heartbroken.💔

You can really tell by his build that at least 80% of that is solid muscle. He is a dog you definitely don't want to see when breaking into a house, I'd rather wrestle a black bear 🤣
The size difference does have an impact. My daughter is a 5'3" tiny girl and her puppy princess is coming up to 125 pounds of muscle.
I had to pause the video for a minute after she said it for calculating purposes, and I still couldn't figure it out 🤣

@@jondonnelly4831you should NOT be spreading such nonsense. They’re not banned in many countries. I’m Japanese in Japan, and this is a Japanese dog breed. Not banned in America or Canada where I also lived. This is not a pit bull. Not even locals here, many dare to own Akita unless you have a huge farm with endless yard in a very cold climate in mountainous area. Not because they are aggressive you need to work these dogs, give them tasks and work as it’s bred as a working dog, you don’t just own Akita like some mascot of sorts and keep them in condominiums living in a city. Regular home in a city isn’t meant for Akita. It’s a real shame they call some breed American Akita as well and such nonsense as Akita is a prefecture name in Japan in up north where they get 3m of snow surrounded by mountains and ocean. It’s like calling Texas Japanese Texas, it’s such a ridiculous name…

To my eyes, Kuma enjoyed having her face washed. Not the water so much , but the scratching around the ears part.

I slightly disagree. My version is that Kuma is living a win-win life; he spends all summer rolling in grass, leaves, forest floor, and who knows what (cow pasture?), then gets to be shampooed, rinsed, blow-dryed, and groomed by this lady he really likes. Win-win.

So sad that this beautiful bear is no longer with us. I hope his family has found peace with his passing. I know it is never easy to lose a forever fur baby😢
The owners knew what they were doing naming him Kuma (Japanese for "bear"), and I love how fitting the name is for him.

Y’all probably know this, but here in Japan the Akita is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, of Japanese breeds and was a hunters companion holding big game like bears, boars, serow, dear and so on. They were used for fighting, settling disputes, and guarding too. Akita is a beautiful place and the Akita dog originates from around the Yuzawa area in Akita near lake Tazawa. They hold a festival called the Inukko Matsuri every year in Yuzawa as a tribute to their faithfulness, bravery, fearlessness and loyalty. A true samurai!

It’s so sweet to watch him enjoy his grooming. From reading the comments, though, I see this handsome dog with the glorious tail has passed. That’s always so sad.

I don’t think so Akita’s are very loyal and don’t think he would leave family for her but he sure loves her tho!

The second the blower came on, it went from Furnado to a Category 5 Furricane!! But I love how Kuma was so chill the whole time and even tried to help by scratching at his belly!

Looks like Kuma isn’t bothered by the noise, but the dryer feels like the best scritch ever.
He doesn't like the happy hoodie because it deprives his ears and head of the wonderful air massage
I used to work at an animal hospital. We had a Basset hound Buddy that was very old and used to come in for laser arthritis treatments once a week. He was super unpredictable and his owner would always give us his favorite toy and a blow-dryer for if he started growling. One of us would hold him and laser treat his hips and feet, while another tech would blow little circles around his face with the blow-dryer. That dog had a love affair withe the blow-dryer
This poor dog needs a likely needs a dietary change and stop using perfumed chemicals on him. Humidity control in the house may be an issue. He also would benefit immediately from a fish oil supplement for his skin and t may help him deal with the stress as well. He deserves help - See that he gets it.

@@jiffjiffernson7292 That's a big dog, probably costs them a fortune to groom him and his wife cos there's 2 of them, I imagine the owners are the sort of ppl who will pay good money for their dogs diets, some animals are just prone to allergies, I'm a human who's prone to them and they aren't that manageable. Talk to the owners before you judge

As a mom of an itchy dog, I kept saying “oh yeah, that got the spot” and “get that itch!” when the dryer came out. This dog trusts you, for sure.
my friend has a dog with terrible grass allergies (and of course they live on a farm... 🙄), he'll literally lick his paws until they're raw unless she's able to stop him. I think he'd LOVE this!!

@@Svecenader *actually* he is allergic to GRASS because they don't spray their acres of land with anything, and his allergies are 10x worse after it is mowed.
@@debjoy12my dog is also allergic to grass. For years, people told me it was likely chicken and to give her seafood because she would lick her paws to death. I finally did an allergy test last week ($$$$). Guess what this little Chihuahua mix is allergic to? Grass (just about every variety), a couple of trees, and three types of seafood. She didn’t even come close to being allergic to chicken. Poor little girl … I should have done this test a long time ago.

I accidentally tapped on this even though I’ve already watched it. I remember how cute Kuma is leaning into the hose, the dryer, and the brushing - and I didn’t have the heart to click out. So yes please let’s watch this handsome, sweet boy again! ❤
He was so grateful for the bath, blow dry and brush. He was willing to let her cut his nails. What a good and beautiful dog. It didnt hurt that she is his favorite groomer.
Vanessa, I've done some thinking. A few reasons why I think Kuma loves you so much is because a) you *ask* him to do things, not *demand* he do things, and b) you listen to him when he tries to tell you something. It also helps that you give him great relief from the irritation he experiences.
And it's not just with Kuma, but every animal you work with. Yes, even the huskies. 😁
In my experience with my American Akita - they are VERY person focused. My boy Simba has a small group of humans he loves and trusts, and he is ALL IN on with them and stand offish with everyone else
Also, I think her cofidece calms him ad lets him trust her not to harm him. "She, who must be obeyed." haha

You can tell that the blower must feel AMAZING to him, the way he leans his head and just looks so blissed out!
They vary in personality. My friend's family had one that was very smart, very friendly, but if we were out in the yard and someone tried to get to close to us that she didn't know, she would stand out front and make it very clear they were not welcome near the children. When she passed on, the same breeder offered a nearly adult sibling who had been given back for not having the breed standard temperament. She was the sweetest little derp ever and just loved everyone.
Not only is it fun watching all that fur starting to fly around, it's fun watching his reaction to it. How he raises his head, turns it from side to side, even how he reacts when you hit his tickle spot, you can see how he loves that blow dryer! This video had me smiling from ear to ear!
I like this first person perspective of the groom with minimal edits, it really does show that grooming is a tough workout all on its own, at least Akuma is well behaved and obedient so he isn't making life extra difficult

His coat is like a sponge lol. He's a loyal customer. Its also so nice to see one of your clients luxuriate in the experience rather than be cranky or anxious. I imagine it's nice for you to have the occasional grateful pup too rather than just happy at the end when they feel better or if nothing else that it's over...

Kuma's humans have done an excellent job both breeding and training him, he's such a good boy! He absolutely loves his spa day.

I’ve been a dog bather for almost two years and I have a regular who comes in with their yellow lab named Theo. Poor Theo has allergies and is very itchy, and I can confirm that grooming him is exactly like this. He LOVES the dryer.
I love how gentle you are with their nails. I've seen groomers and vet techs traumatize dogs for life by just being careless and lazy and trying to get the job done faster. After what I saw in the vet hospital I worked at, I decided I was never going to let anyone else trim my dogs nails. I always do it and make sure to tell them no nail trim at least twice when she goes to the vet or groomer. But seeing how much care you put in it I can honestly say I would let *you* trim my dogs nails and have no worries.
My mother used to hike in the mountains in Southern California and she would take her Akita named Yuki everything as her protector. He successfully scared off mountain lions twice! Bless his heart he was a good boi
On two occasions, I ran into a woman hiking in the San Gabriels with a brindle Akita. Beautiful dog!
Kuma is so conflicted, he wants to scratch so bad but also wants to melt into a puddle while trying to be tough lol
I don't know how I missed this video as I have the full bell notification on. This is one of the most, if not the most chilled dog getting a wash down and groom, that there has ever been. He listens and complies with your "commands" like it is no big deal. His face has a "I'm just going to enjoy this while I can and then I am going to go and get dirty again so I can come back".

It's hard to tell how big Akita's are through video. But the best way to see is when she is brushing him and they're both on camera. Just look at how thick his body is compared to her, and how his head is at least 1.5 times the size of hers. These dogs are muscular beasts.

As someone who worked for a good while at an animal shelter, I do find your point about adopting big dogs very interesting and absolutely valid. All dogs deserve loving homes, and it's sad that they get adopted way less than small dogs, but it's better than being adopted by someone who doesn't have enough time to deal with the dog's background and cause an accident that might hurt others AND the dog.
Yep, I volunteer at a shelter, and people getting big dogs they aren't prepare to deal with, is number one reason they end up with us or back with us, sadly.
I adopted a German shepherd with a little bit of Doberman and I felt I knew his temperament just by interacting with him and seeing him play with other dogs. I have owned dogs all my life but am hardly an expert. I later adopted an abandoned Yorkie to keep him company and that Yorkie that ran the whole house
@@loralieisa I'm glad you found good pets! Big dogs can be amazing to own, specially when you have the proper time to take care of them.
I think the biggest problem with adopting from a shelter, regardless of the size of the dog, is that their personality might change A LOT after getting adopted. When they go to a safe place, and a house where they get the attention they were lacking at a shelter, their true nature shows way more. Which means a really quiet dog at a shelter can turn into an energy ball after adopted, because all that quietness was more due to being worried or scared, rather than being the dog's personality. And that's a much bigger problem when we're talking about big breeds, since the unpredictability is way more dangerous in them than in a small breed.
But....big dogs are best dogs.....they're made of love and happiness and loyalty
@@Grissbane absolutely, but they also tend to need to move quite a bit, and if they pull you, they can tip you over. So when peeps put no effort tinto training they run into trouble...
That is how I ended up with a giant schnauzer, apparently she was 'too wild'. Meanwhile she thinks she's a lap dog and loves cuddles more than even her frisbee.
Kumo is enjoying absolutely every moment of this grooming. His face says it all 😂 he would like you to book him in also for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday after church - Boss Lady only!!

My Father and Step Mother had an Akita for many years. When my husband and I would visit holidays and in the summer time, Keeve was always a gentleman, he listened to my step mom very well and when my father passed, Keeve and my step mom's bond was unbreakable , a relationship that lasted the rest of his years. They would walk every day to the cemetery where my father rested which was a good ways there and back from her home. No one would ever get near to my step mom or him on their daily walks. What a dog, huge and so beautiful, yet so loving to his master and some friends.
Kuma obviously loves you. Akitas are so picky and serious when the decide they like someone, also it usually helps if they are the opposite sex since they are less likely to feel challenged. Seeing Kuma makes me miss the Akita I had as a kid💕

Watching Kuma have his blissful spa day was everything! He's so well socialized and obvi his hoomans are responsible and caring. Anyone thinking of purchasing from a breeder should ask for references from the groomer! If you're willing to spend the money to purchase from a respectable breeder, then pay for the groomer's time to discuss the temperament of the puppers, doggo parents and their owners. Good respectful breeders will have good responsible groomers!
Kuma likely prefers you because you have a very calming way about approaching things, as well as the confidence that dogs look up to us for. What a handsome boy & wonderful level of trust you two are building together. Love your videos & also appreciate the time you take to discuss each dogs individual personality and breed specific traits.

I had an Akita mix rescue that passed this summer. He had the absolute sweetest temperament with people. Truly an emotionally intelligent pup! He always knew if I was sick or sad and did his best to comfort me. He was my lifeline and I miss him terribly. ❤
But you are right about adult rescues. Shelters don't always have the right people on staff or the right knowledge about a breed to really say what their temperament will be like in your home. They said my Akita mix was dog friendly. They were SO wrong. He was just very sick and very traumatized. He was not okay with any dog in his bubble.... but would cuddle with our cats and LOVED our guinea pigs. We saw his true behavior about a month in and that's something you have to be ready for and committed to when adopting. If you're experienced and ready for the surprises - do it! There is nothing more rewarding. If I could go back and do it all again for my boy, I would!

Our Akita was a shedding beast also. My MIL suggested she take the most recent "collection" of fluff, three paper shopping bags filled, home to spin into yarn...she wasn't kidding.

I've spun Samoyed blown coat, and it makes a fluffy yarn like Angora. Wonderful! You have to blend it with some wool so it stays together without overtwisting and stays soft, but most undercoat from longer-haired dogs makes beautiful yarn.
As to the inevitable question almost everyone asks, "Won't my whatever smell like dog when it gets wet?" Uh, does your wool sweater smell overwhelmingly like sheep if it gets wet? Well, then. The yarn has been washed at various stages of spinning, maybe dyeing, and when being blocked to shape after the item is finished. It's as clean as can be! It would only start smelling like unwashed dog if it was still attached to the dog. 😁

@@monicapdx Also, wet dog smell doesn't come from the fur, but from oils secreted from the dog's skin when it gets wet.

This video of Kuma has come up in my feed several times times since I learned of his passing. Watching it now is my tribute to this wonderful boy. 😘
My family's first dog was an American Akita. It was a terrible choice for a first time dog owning family with young children. I was 10 or 11 years old, her name was Lotus Blossom, and I loved her intensely and immensely. Rehoming her was the right choice (in retrospect), but at the time, it was truly devastating. Akita's are so beautiful, but they need the right environment with the right owner who understands the behavior of the breed.
Akitas are the breed with the highest rate of attacks on small children in the UK. They're very dominant. It's not an ideal breed to have around young kids. Also they're very intelligent, stubborn and independent minded (hard to train).
@@chrishayes5755 Yep. My parents learned that the hard way. They had a friend who bred Akitas, he gave us a puppy, 9 year-old me fell in love, and it was totally a disaster. They just didn’t know better. I see why it’s such a problem. They’re such adorable puppies. But not a good choice for many.
@@michelleneal6860 Meanwhile it's almost the opposite for Pitties. GREAT with kids, horrible with anybody else if they don't know you. (at least, that's how my pit/box mix is.)

@@bri5908 they’re not recommending that, they’re just saying that Pitbulls are not naturally aggressive (necessarily), it is the owners who train them wrong and don’t teach them boundaries that give them the bad rep.

I looked up the breed and they were indeed used to hunt various animals, including a small type of bear. I love that his name is Kuma, which means bear in Japanese. Very fitting! He's clearly a wonderful dog and so well trained. 🥰

@@50shadesofbs81 Apparently Akuma means "Great Demon", "Great Devil" or "Great Ogre" or "a malevolent fire spirit", so no matter what you call him, it's badass.
I love the expression on the Akita's face when you are going at him with the rake. That boy is in 7th heaven. I admire your respect for the animals you groom. It is a respect that includes affection and kind consideration. It is also a respect that remains vigilant of the potential danger to yourself. A large dog can do serious damage and any dog can be provoked.

I see by reading the comments that this dog has passed on. I'm glad to see this video and see a glimpse into his life and how much he loved being groomed. To me, that is what a dog's life should be.
He's so calm, even unsettlingly so that I need to watch a vid with a screaming husky

We have an Akita Inu. We got him while stationed in Japan. The American Akitas have other breeds mixed into them, so there are quite a few differences between the original Japanese breed and the American breed, but the temperaments overall seem similar. Ours is so gentle with our family and not agressive per se, but is protective of us. Thank you for educating people about the breed. They are definitely not for everyone.
The ears! When they have their "wings" out (ear muscles relaxed) and to the side, he is in doggo heaven 😍 He is content and in his happy place.
I loved his reaction to the dryer. Instant submission to the process. As a human with a condition so painful it is like being scalded with steam on a sunburn, I know how he feels with that constant nag skin conditions cause. It is exhausting. Bless and and your pack.
The amount of hair that came off of this dog was insane. I've watched about 20 of your videos and this one is by far the most relaxing and entertaining at the same time. This dog was so cool and his pups were beautiful
I'm guessing the other groomers may have gotten soap or water in his eyes and ears if he no longer likes his face massage.

Poor thing. Even though it's adorable seeing his reactions towards the blowdryer, i can only imagine his sheer agony with his skin allergies and how much itching he has to endure. Still, such a goegeous beast.
He really is amazingly gentle with his protestations about getting his face washed. He's trying so hard to be a good boy for you.

That is a beefy dog. Big head, big feet. Very well-behaved. I don’t see how anyone could groom a dog that muscular if he did not want to be groomed. Beautiful dog, but scary big.
Just means there is more of them to love.
You learn overtime each breeds little quirks and you always be respectful and calm and you'd be surprised big dogs can be the biggest teddy bears. All it requires is that they were raised and are in a loving home.
