I’m from West Virginia, but when me and my Younglife group went to Virginia for Rockbridge summer camp, we had one night where we square-danced to this song. This brings back some really good memories of the best week of my life
The articles I read from Virginia City in the 1860’s describe the Virginia Reel tempo moving faster and faster as the dance went along. Skirts were flying and people were almost flying as they locked arms and swung around in the fervor. Sounds like a great time.
I remember doing this at a period ball (maybe the blue gray ball, but i don't remember a lot of blue lol) 1989/90ish at the chamberlain on fort monroe.
They all have their shoes on. Victorian dance slippers were ballet flats that often matched the stockings the ladies wore. These ladies are simply wearing period correct footwear.

So interesting to see this lively country dance being done in formal clothes and a restrained style of dancing.
It's been popular in America since the 1830s and still a lot of fun.
I can’t wait to do this again!! People just don’t know what they’re missing out in. I wish these dances would come back in style.
I'm North Carolina and this is the easiest dance I have very done. Love it !!
I would LOVE to go to a ball like this and wear those dresses.
Well for that matter I would like to go to a ball period lol
