I was athletically inclined in my youth but somewhere around my mid-30's I became a potato. That lasted to my mid 50's when I woke up one day, joints aching, overweight, suffering from hypertension and, after watching my father slowly die from Alzheimers, decided I needed to make a change.
I'm now a fit 5'11" - 170 lbs 60 yr. old, run, bike and swim on a regular basis and signed up for my 1st sprint triathlon this summer. It can be done, all the points noted here are exactly what you need to succeed. I know because it's exactly what I did.

First of all, I absolutely love your channel. I have been in five marathons in my life. Once, a marathon for Epilepsy or Diabetes or something like that which was 26-28 miles. (I was in my 20's so it has been a while.) I have walked since I was 14 years old and I am currently 53 years old. 54, in September.
I couldn't drive, and still don't, due to Epilepsy since the age of 4.5-5 years old. Spinal Meningitis at 18 months, head injury and all of that. I didn't hold my first job until I was nearly 30. I have walked 20 miles to get to a job when I was younger.
My family lives in the country and if I wanted to get somewhere I had to walk. I have strong legs and I heart test last year that says I have a heart of a 25-30 year old. Long story short is that I have had many ups and downs over the years with seizure control.
I had brain surgery in 1996 after doctors ran out of options to treat me. I have periods when I am seizure-free and periods where I am unable to work. Covid knocked me out of my last job in 2020.
After two years of struggling with hard Grand Mal seizures, where I was getting injured, and becoming Anemic, I am finally healthy again and seizure free for 3 months. I have started running again. If I could make a dollar for every mile I have walked I would be rich.
I want to build up to a marathon again. I know that you are not a doctor and I don't need that advice but I have been out for years and I just completed a 44 mile, online challenge, where you can virtually pick your challenges and enter your time and actually get a medal. I was not certain what I could do so I gave myself 2 months to complete the challenge. I logged over 45 miles in 9 days!
I was so shocked. Obviously I can still walk fine. I started running a little bit in doing that. I wound up with a sore Pitiforus (glute) muscle. How do I train properly? I want to train myself for the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Europe. I will be walking that. But I want to begin running as well.
How do I train to run say, ten miles and progress from there? Any specific program? Oh, I have started training with weights and targeting specific muscle groups (top/bottom) also. I've been stagnant for 3 years and have fought to regain my health back. My dream job would have me walking or running for money but I haven't figured out how to get paid for it. Since I don't drive, jobs like Park Rangers are out. But I hike mountains and canyons whenever possible. I work at jobs like Yellowstone, Glacier National Park and the Grand Canyon North Rim and ski resorts in winter. I hiked Rim to Rim of the Grand Canyon 5 years ago in 2018. I want that energy back.
Even more, I don't want Alheimers, brittle bones in old age and to simply wither away in old age. I'm very health conscious.
I had a doctor tell me when I was 8 years old that I would never marry, never drive, never have a child, nor hold a job and that I should simply accept my fate then and not try. I have fought to prove them all wrong since I was young. And I have done almost everything that I was told that I could never do. While I don't drive now, I did for almost 5 years. I have a 30 year old son. The marriages didn't work but not having anything to do with Epilepsy. I just don't accept certain treatment. I saw too much.
    ❤❤❤❤😊😊

Hi Ben. I started picking up running with a prgression from your 5k to the 10k plan three years ago. Today, I smashed my first half on a hilly ourse in 1:55:00. A large junk of those minutes I owe to you and your advice. Consistency, focus on endurance, the things Ben mentions here. And trails. Embrace the trail! Amazing things will happen. 10% rule means every 7 weeks you double your training distance; so start at 10k, then 7 weeks later you're at 20k, 7 weeks after that you are at 40k, 7 weeks after that you are at 80k. So in less than 6 months you can go from beginner to marathon runner training distance with minimised chance of over-training

  • @xanthippus9079

I've been following your beginner to marathon program and at first those distances were intimidating to look at. I'm starting the 5k to 10k segment. Not only I can see the progress, but now I also understand how far it's possible to go.

Amazing to read and thank you! Yes, with sensible structured training there really are very few limits on what you can achieve! Awesome stuff 😊

    • @xuchenglin6256
      @xuchenglin6256 2 года назад +2

Just take your time and be patient. The adaptation takes time, the improvement of cardio performance takes time, the strengthen of muscle takes time. When I start running, I already have a very good aerobic base (in terms of amateur) through cycling, my FTP is about 300w and Garmin gives me a estimated vo2max of 57. But it took me over 6 months to adapt and reach the same level. At beginning I cannot even run a straight 5k, there’re pains here and there all at strange places like abs, different places around knees, ribs, even shoulders… When the pain becomes sharp and “bad” I just stop and call it a day. I built it from 2k to 3k to 3.5k then to 5k 10k. Actually these early adaptation runs put very little stress on my cardio/aerobic system, rather than the muscular system. After those runs it actually feel like a gym session and I built a lot of small strange muscles during the way. Now still on the journey, haven’t actually run a half, but my current 5k is about 22minutes and 5:30/km is the forever pace. Still moderate/slow in the running community but actually I’m amazed by myself, that’s already beyond my expectation. Never been a runner my lifetime, tried to start serval times but all failed because the rush until this time. Patient is important. Give yourself time, don’t rush it and you’ll get there.

Very interesting video. I've been running since 1978 and I'm with you about it being a life time journey. Also I used to get told not to do weight training alongside running (it's either one or the other). So pleased I never listened to them because I rarely get injuries and when I do they don't last long at all 😊

Thank you. My running is improving with age too because there's so much more information and better kit out there now compared to when I first started running 44 years ago. People used to think I was an oddball for running around the local sports field for hours on end back in those days. It's nice to see a whole new culture of runners now who appreciate the importance of exercise 😁

@@drjeckel6209 it's all good man. But I thought it was too funny when you said an air force base is hosting a running event😂😂😂😂. Also, I think running around an aircraft carrier sounds fun. Do all knids of footwork drills, like for field sports. And the boat is rocking and horizon changing, so it might make you really good. But I assume there only a brief time each day when you're cleared for that . No aircraft exercises. But even fifteen minutes is mountains better than nothing.

Can vouch for the comment you made about jumping from 10k to 16k. I did exactly this during a half marathon training last year when I was new to running. Was trying to prove my mental toughness to myself. I picked up a small injury that carried though to my race. The cavalier approach got me through the half but I couldn't run again for months. Just started training for a full marathon and will be taking on board the advice from people more experienced than myself.

Never been one for big running miles, just focussed, quality runs, plus other training. Used to run 39min 10ks off 11 miles running/week + cross training. Ran PBs (sub 18min) last year (aged 51) in 5k off 20-25 miles per week (plus cross training) - long run (8-10 miles), intervals/reps (total with warm up/cool down ~ 6-7miles), parkrun (tempo) plus wu/cd (total 6-9 miles). Seems the best combo for me (covers 5/10k race distance, would up the long run for a half marathon but keep the rest much the same).

I'm just back to running after a 3 year break. When I started 8 years ago, I could run 50m in a 2km walk. It took maybe a year to build up to a 5km run. When I stopped I was doing 8km runs 3 times a week. Now I'm back to 2km walk/run, running about 50% of the time.
My biggest problem is I love love love long (for me) runs. I love hitting distance pbs. But they were so long (for me) it took at least one day, often two to recover.
I'm hoping I can stick to a more balanced training plan this time. Also I found body builders protein powder really helped speed up recovery. I couldn't stomach whey powder so I'm using vegan. I guess I was a little short of protein in my diet.
thanks for you video, it helps. love your work.

Worth noting that the 10% rule does need to be disregarded once you get to a certain level of weekly mileage because of the then exponential increase in weekly mileage that will start occurring and the excessive overload that comes with it. I made this mistake two years in a row because I'm a bit daft and slammed into a wall of overtraining syndrome both times 😬

Honestly, the other way around too - 10% of 0 is still 0, and like, don't get me wrong, beginners gotta go slow, c/o structural fitness, but if you start at one lap around the track (per week) you get to three laps around the track (per week) on a 12 week training programme with the 10% rule in place (and as we all know, 10% is the _upper_ intensity increase) which is clearly too little.

Question for the more experienced runners. The hotter weather is coming up. After my half marathon in 2 weeks I’m thinking of taking a break from the longer distances to focus on 5ks and 10ks through the hotter months while keeping my long run around 10 miles to maintain most of my mileage build up. Hi Eoin, it’s nothing glamorous I’m afraid, I used to basically just get in to time trial position and bang out 2-5 hours on tempus fugit (the flattest course). There were times when I did specific workouts in the week but I sometimes felt they took it out of my legs too much and I lost the quality in my runs. I found even just an hour at around my goal Ironman wattage of around 180w was a good workout and a really cheap way of building that base. All comprehensive studies show following the 10% increase rule can slightly delay an injury on average but ultimately both the same number of injuries and the severity of injuries on average remains the same.
