i love of all of this...not letting your future self down, also surrounding yourself with inspirational people....one of my favourite people is someone i met at parkrun, she's turning 80 next year and this weekend she's doing a half marathon, talk about inspirational! when i think about my future self, that is exactly what i hope to be. thankyou again, i really appreciate not just the great advice but also how you encourage us to find the joy in what we do, it's so important
Regarding the diet part: I've learnt that I mainly eat for my training, but I also eat for my health - and: I eat for happiness. So, if you want to have a pizza after a long run, go for it. If you need a Muffin or some Ice cream: go for it. If you implement food like this like 1-2 times per week, this fill never affect your training and (in my opinion) you'll feel way better. I've learnt the hard way that putting pressure on yourself, regarding what you're "allowed" to eat and what not, is way more harmful, than eating some chocolate oder sweets :)
Here from the newsletter! This is one of my favorites. It's a new habit and it just helps cement the ways in which I can achieve the success I want in my running. Thanks Again! 😊 🏃
I ran my first race, a half marathon, two months ago at age fifty and placed third out of seven in my division, with an average pace of 10:21. That lit the fire under me and now I'm signed up for four more in 2024.
I have the long-term big picture goal of lifelong health, but it's nice having those shorter goals of a race now and then. As a nursing mom, the planning is super hard. It has to be during a baby's nap or it doesn't happen.
the video structure reminds me of the book by Stephen r covey 7 habits of highly effective people which Is leadership focused but can be applied to anything really, love this video
Great video! For those who are interested in reading here is the list of the books Ben is reading: - Out of Thin Air by Michael Crawley - The Endurance Diet by Matt Fitzgerald - Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty
Watching from the newsletter. I’ve watched these before but they were definitely worth another look. I’m new to running and these videos are golden. Thanks for sharing your time with us, and congrats to both of you on the NYC marathon. That travel itinerary was BRUTAL!
Great video and made me look at myself and progress for the future me. I started running about 18 months ago going from C25K to taking part in my 3rd half marathon in September! I also completely stopped drinking 6 months ago and I’ve never felt so good in myself in a long time. The part I liked must in this video is when you can say ‘no.’ For years that was a tough one for me as I was just pleasing others and not really being happy about it. Until a few month ago friends have accepted me saying no to certain things like drinking as I’m focused on my overall health and fitness.
All excellent points. Not sure if this is a habit, but I would add that successful runners are patient. Patient with their training programs to let it take the time it needs, patient while resting to not sneak in an extra run to slow recovery, and patient when a run doesn't go as planned. My running didn't start to improve until I was patient with myself and let it take the extra time it needs (thanks asthma)
Hello from Texas! This is the best running channel on any media. Keep it coming…..and plan a trip to Texas for the Lubbock Half Marathon with me in October. It’s flat as a pancake there and you’re already used to the heat being in Thailand.
Absolutely, I've been doing all of these for decades - I think I am now my future self, haha, as a senior who just never stopped ! It's simply a life style, part of who I am. Infinity goal, for sure.
YOUR BEST VIDEO FOR ME! Ben, As a filmmaker and Creative, you’ve hit the exponential curve where progress begins to go straight up. It wont be long until that happens as a RUclipsr. Keep pumping out the great content! 🙏🙏🙏
Ben and Mary, I absolutely love your videos. I am British, living in England. I was fortunate to live in Bangkok between the ages of 7-10 and attended an international school there. Your videos remind me so much of the wonderful years I spent in Thailand. I can feel the humidity again and remember such little things like how the pavements are different. The polished wood on the stairs in your house is the same as in our house in Samut Prakahn. Thank you for taking me back there. L Beier
Great video but except from all the positive takeaways, there is another side for me personally. Having started running just ~10 months ago and having deep-dived into as much aspects of running as possible, "success" for me in the future will be to not take running too seriously, so I can be able to keep up my other hobbies and aspects of life without being affected too much by my newly found love of running. Though I tend to get invested too much in things I am interested in and at least I am aware of it now, which I didn´t use to be in the past.
Wow. Great vid. A mashup of Messy Happy + Simon Sinek + Stephen Covey + Angela Duckworth + Charles Duhigg. A good life and running battery of advice, thanks!!
Re: books - not only do I keep my copy of Once A Runner easily accessible, I was also fortunate enough to get it signed by both Jan Frodeno _and_ Sebastian Kienle. And if the opportunities ever arise, will happily be adding to those. I think that's similar to what lots of people are saying with "surround yourself with people who inspire you". I 100% agree, and even when I can't make time to see or run with runner friends, it's hard not to get inspired by that book.
Love the editing! Distant memories of awful racing footages with noisy, nerve grinding "upbeat music" fade away. One cannot cater to all tastes but I found music choice, balanced music/speech volume, the graphics and the tips themselves outstanding today. Keep it coming. Love the "Big picture thinking"! I've always wanted to ramp up mileage too much too early. Injury, inconsistency, repeat. I have to think in YEARS not weeks. Was 25k/wk, now 32k, plan on 50k end of year if lucky. Thank you!
When I lack motivation, I use the mantra of what would Rocky do. He would get off his ass and get it done. And when on a bad run I imagine the amazing run that it will build to.
Loved this video. I was smugly ticking off the habits as something that I already do 😇 .................until you opened the fridge and I realised that I was sitting here munching chocolate. Alas, I'm not so perfect after all.
Totally agree on the environment and what you read. If I watch/read plenty of running material I am much more likely to be motivated. How many shoes have you got!? 😂
Enjoyed the video again. Maybe have a sort out of all those old shoes...the foam degrades over time to point where im afraid donating or the bin are the only options.
The 2nd habit is actually not a habit but a question of mindset. That said, if you make running your priority, all the mentioned powerful habits could be implemented easily.
Good video and it resonates well with me as im sure it does with many, my biggest problem is the food, i used to be a fat kid and always liked the snacks, i can structure meals well now but those cravings to avoid the snacks and those little things to nibble on when you're hungry between meals is my hardest thing to conquer. I have lost 2 stone from 13.5 to 11.5 in the last 12 months by doing it. but still find it the hardest thing to not think about, the fat kid in me is screaming out for some biscuits! It's replaced with fruit and other healthy options but those thoughts are always there. I dont want to deprive myself or lose the love of food as it can be something enjoyed and not just something we have to put into our bodies. Any tips are good. I was at the Congleton Park run with you a couple of weeks ago, nice to see it get a video to it :)
The 7 habits of highly successful runners should evolve into being more and. more habits. As the journey continues it should include things perhaps like gear efficiency and gear quality, nutrition and hydration during races, shoe management, injury management, as we progress as runners won should expand their positive habits........
Might want to be careful using this video title/structure. 7 habits of highly effective people is a trademark and the owners are known to enforce it. I’m enjoying the video so far, I like the upbeat energy.
Thanks dude. Let’s see how it plays out. I was trying to be careful not to literally rip the habits and put my own spin on it. A little creativity and I don’t think any of my points are exactly the same as theirs. Inspired by, to a point, but not the same. I’ll see how it plays out (and to be fair I had no idea what the habits in the book were until I’d created mine!!) 😊 thanks for the kind words
Love this holistic approach, i have the same mentality, my focus isn't running though, mines more in line with PeterAttias definition of healtspan, factoring in running as a tool for cardiovascular health. I appreciate the runners perspective, id also love to know what your testosterone levels are as a dedicated runner? Or t levels over time?
My weakest point of the list is the diet part, not because of my choices but because I have the worst appetite. I tend to forget to eat and only remember it when I'm about to collapse 😅
Do you think that you can keep advancing your training if you run indoors to beat the heat occasionally? I live in Florida and the heat and humidity is brutal but feel like if I run on a treadmill I won’t keep acclimated. Thoughts?
Your percentages are a bit off “coaching for 20 years” with 19% on the fuel tank = you’re 105 years old I am always making calculations on the run (literally) - helps me with my pacing and reaching my target for that particular run
Ha ha the bloody plug-in I was using only worked on percentages (must find more) so I was hoping no-one would really notice. But well done, you win! 🙌🏼😂
Definitely not the same. All very different and in different strands. And many are not listicle style vids. But the reason for “similar” titles on different themes is that they are what are growing the channel and helping me reach more people. Just checking back my past 10 vids and only 4 are of the style you mention 😉😊
