She is like Alex Honnold. Doesn't think too much, just smiles and does her thing. That's the mentality that can make you do great things, but what is much more important is it saves you from stress.

'd say the main superpower these people have is the lack of overthinking or doubting. i wrote overanalysing first but then I realised it takes a lot of analyses to figure out a bouldering problem or a training plan for the day. but then, they somehow manage to not involve too many of the negative emotions in it with people who are more like me, I am a very doubtful, insecure, overanalyzing person who has problems making decisions. so I am so envious of people who are like this.

My furthest a year ago was 6 miles. I randomly went out one day and did 10. Couldn’t walk for a few days 😂 now I run 40-60 miles per week with back to back weekend runs of 10-20 miles and barely any soreness afterward
@@phillipjacowski I started with 12 miles for my first week. 6 was my long run. There’s a book called Running your First Marathon by Andrew Castor. That will help a lot. You can also go based off of time and build that way. Research progressive overload with running and the 3 weeks on 1 week recovery rule
Her approach and where she's at says it all. We have such an addiction to analysis, preparation, trying to figure things out. Which mostly, all resides outside of the present moment. Spend more effort doing and less focus on trying to figure it out. Courtney may not even realize that she's a zen master😂🧝♀️🧘♀️
I was reading a book about "Happiness"(and how to be happy) last night and just gave up reading the book. It was exhausting and I was only a quarter of the way through. Listening to Courtney on my run today reminded me to connect with the emotional pleasure and fun of running. Just be and enjoy.
My thoughts also, I suspect there's an inverse correlation between how others see your process and your internal metronome; sure hope nobody ever convinces her to follower the analysis-paralysis route. Keep winning Courtney and leave the rest to the Scientists with their reagents!
Static training plans are uneffective, they only act upon performance loss or increase delayed or not at all. Also it kills your fun for what you are doing... with basic boundaries and a driven attitude you get further in my opinion.
Rich is very curious about her process and I can see him try to pick her brain more but that's what happens when you talk to a natural, her answers may seem basic or unsatisfactory to those who need more analysis. I saw her in Joe Rogan and it's the same, genuine answers, and she's not scared to tell people about her "basic" process.
This is especially a problem in the age of RUclips influencers where they have these fitness channels with hundreds of videos that obsess over every minuscule detail of exercise to get you to click on their videos. In reality it only needed to be like a dozen videos but they'd stop making money if they stopped making content thus the vast sea of useless information.
I love how Courtney has this presence of just figuring it out and and trusting in herself to figure it out that Rich will never understand. With his attempts to shoot out his perceptions and fears onto her, she just has such a innocent answer that you can literally see his brain not conceptualizing. She is my inspiration for my mindset that maybe we should just start making things simple and not wasting energy thinking about it and just trust ourself to figure it out. - Do, not think. - Get to your scary part faster and then make friends with it. - When your in a situation, get to the facts and control what you can control.

His motivation to push himself is to push past his emotional ego. I have nothing but respect for that. He admits most people shouldn’t want to damage their body the way he has.
It's called "gratitude". Courtney is a great role model for that. As Camille Bruyas stated in her post UTMB interview when asked how she was smiling so much along the way: "I decided to run. It's a choice, so you have to feel all the nature, the people, the views, the energy...). Basically, nobody is forcing them to do this and they are thankful for the opportunity that most of the world will never experience.

Courtney is like an artist really. I'm a musician and you can do music mired in the theory and obsess over what notes you are playing, or you learn it and then throw it all away at a conscious level because you have internalized it all. Then you make art. I think this is similar where Courtney has transcended the details and data and is so in tune with running that she is now just creating art in motion.
I think there’s more to it than just running past the hurting. The art analogy is really applicable, especially if you apply the following definition of art: “ a skill at doing a specified thing, typically one acquired through practice.” She’s mastered the art of what she does because she really puts in the effort but she even uses the word “joy” …I haven’t seen many athletes with her aura
Courtney is living proof of what we all have in our hearts !! Deep down we know this that's why we love so much to hear her because something within our hearts resonates to that truth of FUN. The planning really well, working hard hard and winning works! But at the end of life Courtney will have had a looooot of FUN every day every training, every race and WIN while others who also WIN but they missed a lot of fun while stressing on planning, ticking boxes geting dissapointed or very frustrated for not keeping up with the plan, losing race. It same as making money. It can be fun or it ca be a lot of stress, fear, frustration. Some people win a lot of money just to prove themselves or from fear based motivation. While others just want to have a lot more fun in life. Build a business from passion, build a happy unified efficient team, enjoy serving their clients. JOY, FUN is a choice. Right? Finally! The Joe Rogan interview with her after the Moab 240 is one of the best interview on the whole internet (not sports related). I go over it over and over again, the energy is just amazing! Now another interview done the right way - great mics, long, intense and by someone who knows what they are talking about - great!

When she talks about not talking about how good or bad things are going, as well with Rich talking about the Iron Cowboy, saying all is good. It goes back to what Chadd Wright talks about with the power of the spoken word and how you can fall apart if you say something is hurting or are bad.

Cut out vegetable oils and all carbs, even potatoes, but keep all the low carb veggies of course. Also cut out all sugar of any kind except for lower sugar fruits. Probably too late to reverse most of the damage, but I Guarantee you will feel better than you have in a long time.
My dad ran for decades from his mid 20's until his 50's. In his 60s he started having knee issues and the Dr. told him the arthritis in his knees was so bad they really needed to be replaced. about 3 years ago he got on his bike a rode a little bit. He now cycles regularly 20+ miles at a time and has 0 knee issues while doing it. Give it a try!

In cycling and triathlon the search for marginal gains in aerodynamics, equipment, training and nutrition are critical. The simplicity of ultrarunning must allow this level of simplicity to work. She is clearly naturally talented. If she had coaching and more organization I would imagine she would be just as good.

I’m about half way in and I’m a huge fan of the podcast. I’m a new sub and I’m hooked. Thank you for interviewing such amazing people. I realize the work behind the production. It’s great! I almost skipped over this but I’m so happy I didn’t. Courtney is amazing. She’s so great to listen to. Her laughter is contagious and the sheer DRIVE! Absolutely amazing! I’m an armature “runner” in my mind. Lol! I’d have to venture into the mindset. I personally don’t believe she should ever have any testing done until never. Running is a skill but this long distance stuff is 100% a mind game. She has what it takes to conquer. Prior to this episode, I did not know who Courtney Dauwalter was... Her perspective on pain (The Pain Cave), really resonated with me. longest run before watching this was 3 miles ish, ran after this video for 7.4 and within the next week did first 10 mile of my life THANK YOU!

I started running at 28 and had to stop at 62 because of OA in both knees - in heaven I’ll start up running again , 🥇
try transitioning to barefoot movement (not advocating for running with this condition just basic moving )
Start cycling.
I have the same problems with both of my knees. Still running but the end is near.
Cut out vegetable oils and all carbs, even potatoes, but keep all the low carb veggies of course. Also cut out all sugar of any kind except for lower sugar fruits. Probably too late to reverse most of the damage, but I Guarantee you will feel better than you have in a long time.
My dad ran for decades from his mid 20's until his 50's. In his 60s he started having knee issues and the Dr. told him the arthritis in his knees was so bad they really needed to be replaced. about 3 years ago he got on his bike a rode a little bit. He now cycles regularly 20+ miles at a time and has 0 knee issues while doing it. Give it a try!

In cycling and triathlon the search for marginal gains in aerodynamics, equipment, training and nutrition are critical. The simplicity of ultrarunning must allow this level of simplicity to work. She is clearly naturally talented. If she had coaching and more organization I would imagine she would be just as good.

This particular chat and much of what both of you had to say came at the perfect time for me personally and not even related to endurance activity; I’m headed to help my parents through their next stage in life which will require my full attention and expertise at helping them navigate a cognitively challenged existence. jokes help everything might just be my mantra to make it through and I already rely heavily on stand-up comedy whether I’m riding or running and I bet it will be the perfect cushion to the challenge I am facing next!
She may not know it, but she's a prime example of someone embracing and living the tao. I'm left speechless.
I thought the same! Glad to see someone else did too. Her intuitive and easygoing attitude is the embodiment of wu-wei, effortless action. Don't think or analyze or plan-just Do. Adapt continuously to each moment and drop all notions of what the moment should have been. What an inspiration!

I’m about half way in and I’m a huge fan of the podcast. I’m a new sub and I’m hooked. Thank you for interviewing such amazing people. I realize the work behind the production. It’s great! I almost skipped over this but I’m so happy I didn’t. Courtney is amazing. She’s so great to listen to. Her laughter is contagious and the sheer DRIVE! Absolutely amazing! I’m an armature “runner” in my mind. Lol! I’d have to venture into the mindset. I personally don’t believe she should ever have any testing done until never. Running is a skill but this long distance stuff is 100% a mind game. She has what it takes to conquer. As a female and basic understanding of biology/exercise science, it doesn’t surprise me that you guys are talking about how great SHE is! 🎉❤😊

Prior to this episode, I did not know who Courtney Dauwalter was... Her perspective on pain (The Pain Cave), really resonated with me. I really really really like this and while on the mountain running today, I practiced looking forward to reaching that point, instead of resisting. This mindset is taking liberation to another level!
